  • If you have an older bike or one that does not have a fancy "infotainment system" built in, they you might want to take a look at the Ottocast CarPlay Lite C5. This unit allows you to link with your cell phone and utilize Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, right from your motorcycle. While this unit is reasonably priced at $259.99 and seems to be well built, it does have its quirks, so watch the entire video to see what I experienced when using it with my Cardo PackTalk communication device.

    Great video. I installed a C5 on my Concours 14 and took a 5500 mile trip. I have a Sena system in my helmet and another Sena for my passenger. I too was disappointed by the fact that once my helmet connected to the C5, I could not communicate with my passenger through the Sena system. Also, as you said, phone calls were very noisy for the other side of the call.

    I purchased one of these a couple of months ago for my 2019 Yamaha Tracer 900 GT. I absolutely love it so much I discontinued using my Garmin Zumo XT. Great Product for the money.

    • @sd5458
      @sd5458 Год назад +3

      That's currently my situation. I have a KTM that has very basic turn by turn in the dash. I've never had GPS and started researching, and it basically came down to a Zumo XT and aftermarket mount ~$700 between the two.
      Instead I bought a cheap amazon mounting bar and this C5 unit, and won't have to use Garmin's crappy outdated maps and UI. Is this C5 pretty basic? Totally, but it keeps the continuity of being able to use your Google Maps or Apple maps and have it be mirrored on the motorcycle.
      I for one, am super excited about this device even with its shortcomings. It's obvious to those who know about tech Otto / the manufacturer basically ported over Android auto, so a lot of the Linux functions come over with it (an older version of Android Auto I think). This is why things like the date with no internal battery exist which was not fully thought out.
      Anyways, my total cost out the door for this setup is $330 and I can use it on multiple bikes. Also - how many Garmins are fully waterproof? VIRTUALLY NONE!

    I bought this unit a few months ago. Only paid about $100.00 for it so I took a chance on it. My observations are as follows. The sound quality from the unit to my Sena headset is tinny and loses bass (not that the bass was all that, to begin with on the Sena). What I really like is the Nav feature with Google Maps, I like being able to set routes on the computer and send them to my phone to be used later. I like the touch screen and the large size. Optimum mix would be to keep music playing from the phone and Nav from the unit. Not sure if I'll keep it or put in on the pile of rejects.
    Anyway, thanks for your review.

    Nice video, thank you! Just a thought: with the same amount of money you can buy a rugged Android phone and instead of streaming your main phone - with all the complication that brings - you can just have a dedicated phone on your dash. And you can add a traveling SIM card in so now you have 2 phones - a good safety option in case of emergency.

    • @ozom
      @ozom Год назад +1

      Issue I had with that setup is that the phone overheats when exposed for a long time. Battery discharges faster and I wouldn't be surprised if life is shortened or it might bloat or explode (fingers crossed).

      That exactly what I have done. I have a rugged phone with its own sim. Mirrors WhatsApp and works for music, nav, etc. My cardo will allow two Bluetooth devices, so my normal phone in my pocket still works for old style voice calls. I went this way so my main phone is always with me as a back up in case of an off anytime, not stuck on the bike across the other side of the road..

    I had the Garmin Zumo motorcycle navigation unit on a previous bike and liked that even though it was pricey. I have a new motorcycle now and didn’t move it over. I just mount my IPhone on the handlebars and use Google Maps or Apple Maps and with the larger new IPhone I have I can see the display just fine. I have a USB port to keep the phone charged, it connects easily to my SENA headset so I’ve just decided to use my phone now and not spend money on a Garmin or unit like this. If I had a big Harley-Davidson touring bike with the infotainment system, I probably would get it connected to Apple CarPlay with the necessary hardware. Great and thorough review as always. Ride safe!

    • @UncleLongbeard
      @UncleLongbeard Год назад +5

      The only issue is that no matter what mount you have, it will transfer vibrations from your bike to the phone. And that will probably destroy your phone's camera. Even if you have vibration dampened mount. I tested that on my channel and the results were rather bad.

    • @benriley4398
      @benriley4398 Год назад +3

      I tried using my phone as well using Quadlock and anti-vibration adapter for it. I found the phone is hard to use as once it heats up, the screen goes dim to prevent overheating. And once it does overheat, it shuts down completely. Also, if using maps and a call came in, it would swich screens, but then not go back to the maps after a call, and then if I didn't switch it over to maps right away, the phone screen would then time-out which means I had to unlock it. And you can't use face-ID with a helmet, and trying to unlock using your PIN with gloves while driving is just dangerous. I ended up using Carplay. It always works, never overheats and easy to navigate even with gloves.

    Gaia GPS works and it's AWESOME on this unit. I use Google Maps for road riding, and Gaia GPS when dual sporting. I have USB power on the bars of both bikes and a ram mount quick release so I can move the CarPlay Lite C5 between bikes quickly. So far, it's been a great little unit and since I also use Android Auto on both my family vehicles, it's been nice using the same platform. I also output music through the unit to my headphones in my helmet (just wireless headphones, nothing exotic). It's great to control music through the glove friendly screen using Spotify. Now I just have to see how durable it will be....some big off road rides coming up soon so it will be put to the true torture test!

    So I don’t have android but I do use a Cardo setup along with my iPhone. I’m looking at this unit mostly for Nav and being waterproof. I would think you could connect the iPhone to the unit and then leave your iPhone connected to the Cardo. The audio would still plum through the phone but the video would go to the head unit. I could be wrong about this but ultimately, it’s the phone that controls what the head unit does.

    Waze, music, and announcing my incoming texts work great. But for some reason it will not connect phone calls to my Sena headset. It will call out, and it will show the incoming call but but I cannot hear anything and the person on the other end cannot hear anything. It stops the music during a call but its just silent. I have gone through all settings and cannot find anything that would pertain to this. The only thing I can think of is that on the screen right before it goes to CarPlay, it givers you a message that it will start up on bluetooth and then once it establishes a connection, it will use wifi to transmit data. Maybe the phone calls dont come through in wifi? Its frustrating because everything else works exactly as I hoped except for the phone calls.

Solves the issue of bad sound output/mic input, and you'll also regain control of the Cardo. Only thing is, you'll loose the ability to manage the audio app (I typically use Spotify for my music) and volume control on the C5 screen. Has anyone tried this method?

    The C5 Cast device just sucks. I installed it on my motorcycle and it worked great for a couple of days... after that it just stopped working. What happened?... well, first when passing through a city or town or any place with many cars or buildings, it started to receive a lot of interference and it disconnected my headset, then it restarted itself for no reason, I had to disconnect it from the power source now The on/off button didn't respond. Once I rebooted it would work fine for a couple of hours and then reboot again. Overall, a pain in the ass. In the end, it no longer recognized my smartphone and did not stream carplay wifi, it only connected via BT intermittently and kept resetting itself. I ended up returning the product and they refunded my money via Mercado Libre (Latam). Don't get me wrong, it's a great idea and a very useful gadget for us who ride motorcycles almost daily, but I feel that the product needs to mature and in the following versions it will possibly be better and all these problems will be solved. For now, I will wait a few more months to buy the product again. Greetings and good riding to all!

      The connection information is retained when the unit is turned off.
      The unit is held into the cradle with a screw pin that must be undone to take the unit out. This would be hard to do with a glove.

    Maybe I’m missing the point here, but I’m not seeing why this unit is required? My iPhone sits on a quadlock which communicates with my bike & headset (Triumph GT pro 1200), why would I spend more money on this? If you’re riding an older bike then it’s the same deal without any connection to the bike, what are the benefits I don’t get it - but thanks for the review🇬🇧

      1. You don't have to take your phone out of your pocket and fiddle with a mount
      2. Yes Quadlock is easier and faster to use than others but a.some phones don't have Quadlock cases (the sticker is not the safest), b. It can screw up the phone camera (not sure if their rubber vibration absorber extra mount fixed it) and c. Quadlock + case + vibration damper cost the same as this cleaner solution
      3. Not sure about this particular model, but other ones are already available with connectable extensions such as tire pressure sensors and onboard front-rear camcorders

      I tried using my phone as well using Quadlock and anti-vibration adapter for it. I found the phone is just a pain to use on the motorcycle. For one, once it heats up, the screen goes dim to prevent overheating. And once it does overheat, it shuts down completely. Also, if using maps and a call came in, it would switch screens, but then not go back to the maps after a call, and then if you dont catch it and switch to the maps screen right after the call, the phone screen would then time-out which means I had to unlock it. And you can't use face-ID with a helmet, and trying to unlock using your PIN with gloves while driving is just dangerous. Using the phone with quadlock just didn't work well unless you don't mind pulling over to unlock your phone every now and then. I ended up using Carplay. It always works, never overheats and easy to navigate through the menu even with gloves. Yes it stinks that it makes the other features of your BT headset useless for other communications. But honestly, my friends and I never pair up our headsets. We use the Discord app on our phones and use the voice chat feature. Much easier then having to pair up headsets

      @@benriley4398 I’m not sure where you live, but my iPhone doesn’t overheat? You can upgrade Siri with AI and it will respond to voice commands ie close and open apps at will - not that I want to be taking calls when I’m riding it’s a pleasurable thing but ok now and again. You can overdose on gadgets and it’s just another thing that’s lightly to get nicked, fair enough if it’s incorporated into the actual dash but another electronic device strapped to your bike…..not for me.

I had to send video proof that the unit was not working multiple times. After two months of this run around they finally said I had to send it back to them for inspection before they would decide to send a new unit or refund. They wanted me to send it to China for this inspection. I just took the loss.

    I purchased this navigator and made a 4000 km trip to the north of Spain. I found out several issues with the connection, it disconnets by itself from the cell and it shows a message of wi-fi lost connection. You can solve it by restarting the navigator but it's a pain in the ass, it always happens at the worst time. I use Cardo Freecom 2x with it and the quality of the calls are crystal clear but like you I had issues to connect with my wife's cardo unit and talk to each other while using the navigator. I solved it from my wife's cell. Starting the Cardo app she looks for my Cardo device and makes a call. This way I can use the navigator and talk with my wife while riding.
    I have contact with the seller due to the issues with the connection and they sent me a new firmware than I am yet to test.

      These units are theoretically good for people who want to protect their expensive phones and who also like the CarPlay or Android Auto experience. Also this units should have very good touch control even using plain old motorcycle gloves which is something you don't get with an actual phone. I would love to have the nice simple interface of Android Auto and have that experience work for my motorcycle use with normal motorcycle gloves, and I would love to have my phone sitting protected in my tank bag where it can charge via USB. So in theory for me these devices would be awesome. But from what I'm seeing in this video there are still a lot of major gotchas to watch out for. One of the biggest problems is the lack of great mapping and routing apps. I did purchase the new MRA Beta Next app which is eventually going to work with both carplay and Android Auto, but that is a work in progress.

      Your phone will also randomly time out causing you to have to pull over to unlock it. your phone screen will also start getting dimmer and dimmer as you ride and the phone heats up and reduces brightness to avoid overheating. And then when it DOES overheat, it will shut down completely. So yeah, the phone has the POTENTIAL to do what this unit does. But unfortunately, it cannot do it without issues.
