Regarding myth #2, I was discouraged from trying contacts for nearly 15 years because of my astigmatism! Total BS!! I finally tried them and they are so much better than glasses. They are comfortable too, and I can leave them in 12-14 hours per day without any issues. Sure, I could tell something was in my eyes the first week or two, but now I pretty much forget they are in.

Hi Doc! I really enjoy your videos - I first started to need glasses at age 8. Contact Lenses then, were fairly new; but by the time I turned 15, I was allowed to have them. Happiest day of my life!👏 Teenage vanity for sure. At that time they were hard lenses, and would pop out at most inconvenient times - but I LOVED them! And fyi, I had astigmatism and there was a lense for me, then. I had quite severe myopia. When the first soft lenses came out I switched to them. Never had any problems with either type, until I slept in them occasionally (these were the kind you could sleep in) hypothetically. I did get an infection and it was treated with drops and cleared up quickly. This was in the 1980’s. I wore lenses from age 15 until I developed cataracts 5 years ago and had really successful cataract surgery. I am 75 (yikes)! I was just diagnosed with PVD - and I just want to say a big “THANK YOU” for your video I found on it about 3 weeks before I could see my ophthalmologist and I cannot tell you how it calmed my worries. I was fearful of a retinal detachment but your video described exactly my symptoms! Whew! I am having trouble trying to adjust to it, though - and I am hoping my brain learns to ignore it like it has done with my floaters (which I have had since about age 10). SO annoying! Sorry for taking so much of your time with my medical eye history; but I thought you might be interested in someone with such a long history of contact lenses. Thank you again - you are fantastic!! 👏👍🙋‍♀️🇺🇸🥰

Thank you for acknowledging the problems with sleeping in even so-called extended-wear contacts. My optometrist freely, and without warning, prescribed me extended-wear soft contacts, and after a couple of years, I suddenly developed what seemed like a terrible eye infection. The optometrist prescribed antibiotic drops. Did not help. She was stumped so referred me to an ophthalmologist. He read me the riot act for being careless (hey, wasn't my fault!) and said that there is, in reality, no such thing as extended-wear contacts that one can safely sleep in. He diagnosed the problem as autoimmune contact lens intolerance. I had to refrain from wearing contacts for 1 year before my eyes did not swell up, water, and produce gunk after I put contacts in my eyes (I tried after 6 and 9 months).

    • @alycewich4472

That's why I don't go to optometrists, they probably have more education since I was a youngster, but my mom insisted on an ophthalmologist as they had an MD behind their name. When I had my sons, one of them had to have eye surgery to correct strabismus (wandering eye) before he entered kindergarten. After he retired the next ophthalmologist that we saw looked at his eyes and said if he hadn't known that my son had had the surgery, he would never have guessed it. He was very impressed by the retired doctor's surgical technique and the results, as his eyes were spot on, tracking as they should with no sign of him ever having a problem.
Glad your ophthalmologist found the problem and you can wear them again.

THIS! My Doctors refuse to prescribe these drops. We had a patient who came in complaining about lots of floaters and shadows and when we took a retinal photo, her retina was almost detached. She was prescribed by another doctor. We had to call an ophthalmologist nearby for emergency surgery. She regained her sight afterwards and said she wasn’t explained the risks about the drops.

I've made two 1 month contact lens boxes last roughly 3 years. Slept in them 90% of nights to this day. Since I haven't had any issues whatsoever so far I thought it must be okay (My mindset was; "well, glasses companies are greedy asf so the contact industry is probably similar. they just want you to keep coming back every month/year to buy more $200 contact lenses"). However blindness is terrifying, I'm definitely gonna start being more responsible with them after watching this video before this becomes a horror story lmao

monovision has worked for me for about 10 years through multiple doctors (I've moved). It was a great recommendation and my current doctor helped me through multiple fittings to get to where I am now. Although I can see everything clearly with glasses, I much prefer wearing contacts. I've been wearing them since I was about 16 and started with O2 permeable hard lenses. My doctor at the time expected that would stop my eyes from continuing to get worse and that I would eventually transition to soft lenses. My prescription stabilized when I was 20-22ish and I made the transition to soft lenses. I am -7.50 left and -6.00 and definitely have thick glasses, even the small version I wear from taking out my lenses to bed and back to the bathroom in the morning when I wake up. I wear 2-week disposables currently

    • @ajs11201
      @ajs11201 Год назад +1

Yeah, I've had monovision contacts for about 15 years now and I absolutely love everything about them. Unlike you, I was late to the party when it comes to vision correction--I didn't need my first pair of glasses until I was in my 30s (I'm farsighted, not nearsighted), and when I switched to contacts (about 5 minutes after I got glasses!), they were soft lenses. I also wear 2-week disposables, specifcally Acuvue Oasys.

Every time you blink it will tend to move around a lot. As far as fixing the problem, there isn’t very much to be done about it.

I have severe myopia with a bit of astigmatism. I usually just go in without glasses or lenses but it's so blurry that I feel it might be somewhat dangerous. Not to mention if I can't see anything I can't really enjoy my surroundings. Is it ok if I just went with my lenses on and dispose of them as soon as I get out of the water? It's not like I'm going to open my eyes under the water, but some water may fall on the eyes and such. I'm really sorry for this incredibly dumb question.

Saliva use to be used in the old days of Hard Contact lenses wear, before there were contact solutions available in the store, in the 1970s. Tiny Hard Contacts (corneal contact lenses) are prone to dust, pollen, etc, getting into the eye and causing exaggerated foreign body sensation. When this happens, the person would have to immediately remove the contact (pop them out into the hand by pulling the eye lid sideways. After the dust, pollen or whatever gets washed away by the tears, then the wearer would put the hard contact back in the mouth to clean and lubricate it, then pop it back in. That's actually where the "don't use saliva" nowadays comes from. Yes, believe it, it's true!! NICE VIDEO A+. I would like to nominate Myth No. 8: people don't wear hard contacts anymore. I'm wearing them right now, small hard corneal contacts, but they are made from Gas Permeable materials rather than the old plastics. I can see much better with these than soft lenses or glasses. AND, they are as comfortable as soft lenses (after the month long break in period to let the eyes get acclimated to them). The only exception is with dust, pollen, etc. Yes, this is a HUGE problem during pine pollen season. AND, it's a lesser problem year long. If you wear corneal (small) hard contacts, you will have a day with foreign body sensation, and have to pop them out to clean them. BE PREPARED!!!! have a contact lenses case and pocket size eyedrops bottle of RGP conditioning solution with you at all time. There will come a day you have to find the restroom urgently, to take the lenses out, and rinse it off with the solution, or put in your case for safe storage for the rest of the day, and have only one eye corrected. But don't use saliva!!!!!!!!!

Doctor, I slept with my contact lenses. I didn’t see my left eye contact lenses when I woke up.
I only found my right contact folded on my eye. I got scared when I woke up. I went to optometrist and didn’t see nothing. I thought the contact lenses went inside my eye on the side. I still feel weird sensation.

Usually when it comes to young kids i always approve of their contact lenses for sports, but i usually talk against it when it comes for beauty reasons. I know alot of people both from work and out of it that had alot of issues growing up because wearing their cl as a teen meant always overwearing it and abusing it. I got extended wear contacts for camping and travel so I can safely keep the lenses in overnight now and then (like, if I forget lens cleaning solution or my luggage is misrouted) and I've tried sleeping with them in twice, but they are so uncomfortable. I wouldn't do it regularly for multiple reasons, with most of which is the eye can begin growing capillaries through the cornea to feed those tissues oxygen, and that's not even taking increased risk of irritation or infection into account.

I spoke with a few docs about that same question. No matter what, showering and swimming with contact lenses increases the risk. Daily lenses are safer as you shouldn’t be wearing them more than that day, but it’s still a risk. A tour guide I once had in Munich had a corneal transplant after an infection he got from swimming with his daily contact lens. So yeah, technically still a risk.

I would guess that the myth of children not being able to wear contacts arises from parents not wanting to spend the money. I'm 43 as of this post, and have worn contacts since 19. My eye doctor at the time strongly advised against ever sleeping in them. Aside from a couple occasions of accidentally falling asleep with them still in, maybe a total of seven or eight times in the last 24 years of contact lens use, I never have. I've never had any major problems, and only stopped wearing them for a few months during the COVID-19 pandemic. My mom was allergic to the old solution they used to use when she tried contacts in the 1970s, and my dad didn't believe in spending any "unnecessary money" on anything for the kids. I kid you not, he threw a hissy fit over an extra quarter once.

Hi I am 56 years old. When I was 22 I had my eyes fixed with radial Keratotomy. Which was before laser surgery came out. This did a great job of correcting my short sightedness. However over the last 10 or so years the sight is getting worse again. Are there any contact lenses that would work for me as I have been told in the past that because of the cuts from Radial that contact lenses won't adhere properly to the eye. Do you have any suggestions on what I could look for. I am from New Zealand. I had glasses made a couple of years ago and they just don't work for me as the 2 eyes are so different wearing glasses makes me feel a bit spaced out and after a while makes you feel giddy. Cheers Mike

I don't know if this will help or not... What i find when i get a new prescription is I have to take them home WITHOUT wearing them yet and placing them on the nightstand to start wearing them, I don't have the problem. But maybe it won't work for you as I reread your comment and you've had the same pair of glasses for a couple of years now. My other suggestion is to see if it's the glasses lenses themselves. I had to have a smaller pair of lenses in my glasses as my astigmatism was so bad that the outside edges of the glasses would distort my side vision to the point that I felt the vertigo type experience when I looked from side to side without turning my head. You also might see if it helps to turn your head when looking from side to side to see if that helps. People who have 20/20 vision from birth have no idea how fortunate they are. And now, with all the improvements that we have, we who have poor vision have many more options than we did back in the 1950's. I'm so sorry that you had a bad experience with the radial Keratotomy. I knew someone else who had it and she had a hard time with it later also. At the time I was glad that I didn't opt for it...

You can wear contacts overnight if they were designed for it. They are FDA approved for this. The risk of eye infection goes from like 1 in 1000 to 4 in 1000. Many of the negative studies were decades ago before newer technology was introduced. Recent studies have seen no vision loss with extended wear infections. I would be interested in the DR direct experience with infections from extended wear. I'd bet they did not follow directions.
Many eye doctors just treat people like infants.

There is a lot of truth to this. I bet a lot of the extended or overnight wearers do in fact have bad habbits. We do still see a lot of complications from overwear, mostly large neovascular fronds and corneal warpage. Also Sterile infiltrate scars. I think the biggest concern is because when people do get infections from contact lenses...it's scary and awful.

I started wearing contacts when I was about 13, no issues.
In 1985, (at 19) my optometrist said only a little bit of astigmatism- no need to fix. Could not see properly- should not have been her decision to make. Was like wearing glad wrap on one eye and clear vision in the other.
Now, I have been to many optometrists for the past 20+ years and they keep prescribing disposables - but they say close enough is good enough. No it's not. I hate seeing double letters differently in each eye and it makes me dizzy.
One prescribed me with - 5.5 in the left eye, 4.75 right ( I couldn't see where I was walking, i couldn't see the door handle of my car, I couldn't see my hands or the clothes in my cupboard, but the letters on the chart were clear) - and she told me that was what I needed to drive. I currently wear a - 3.75, 1.25 170 in my left eye and 3.5 right eye, I can read the legal driving line, I still need +2 to read my phone.
In the distance with the 3.75/3.5 I see signs and letters but I see 2 of them in each eye, in total 4 lines that end up blurring together. When I cover my eye, I can read both the real and shadow in the distance.
Is it normal practice to overcorrect so that 20/20 vision is achieved at the expense of not seeing the car right in front of you clearly and not being able to read the number plate?
Driving has become a lot more scary - you don't know you can't see properly until someone puts the right lens in front of you and you get that aha moment. How many people out there are driving around overcorrected because the disposable lens industry has taken over but is not providing accurate prescriptions.
Can you do a video on how astigmatic vision, when not corrected properly, means you see differently close up versus far away? The further away lettering is, the more distance between the real letter and its "shadow ".
(BTW: wearing glasses gives me nosebleeds so this is not a full-time option for me)

      @katiemcd5433 2 года назад +1

This right here! Up until this year I only needed corrective lenses for one eye due to my astigmatism and the birth of my child. One doctor told me to live with it even though I was having trouble driving. Finally found a doctor who was willing to help. At first we had trouble correcting my vision because my good eye was 20/15 so that’s what I thought I needed. She told me 20/20 is the goal and that is the best goal.
If your doctor is trying to over correct they are doing you a disservice. I now am at the wonderful age where I can’t see far away and I need reading glasses.
My doctor talked with me about my options. As I get migraines from having too much difference in my vision we made the choice to go with contacts for normal correction and reading glasses.
If you are not part of the discussion on your health care find someone who will make you part of it. Your eyes are just as important as any other part of your health care. Good luck!

Contact lenses (soft) absorb liquid and can create a perfect breeding ground due to heat, moisture and protein content. Contact lenses wear can also cause micro scratches on the corneal surface and create a zone of entry for microbes to enter into the eye. Best to not wear contacts while swimming and to always clean and disinfect lenses as recommended by a local eye care professional.

Hello, thanks for a great channel. I used a mineral-new based oil to help heal a new surgical suture line on my upper eyelids after years of inserting contact lenses. I awoke the next day with very swollen upper eyelids. It’s now 8 weeks and my upper lids remain very swollen. Oral Antihistamines have not worked. Can you advise? I have a wedding in 6 weeks. Many thanks.

Is it true that we can't get LASIK if we've worn contacts for a long period? Some studies show that they decrease the cornea thickness thereby making the person a bad candidate for LASIK? I'm kinda worried since I've started to wear contacts.

Just got my lenses today, what happens if I accidentally fall asleep (like a nap) with them in? I’m horrible about taking a little nap after work lol
