Another great and maybe safer tip for aging metal with nickel plating, is to use Lysol toilet cleaner. The blue liquid stuff. Put your metal parts in the liquid for 5-10 minutes then rinse off with clean water. I use this trick on furniture hardware that I need to look more aged than a new nickel plated steel. It doesn't rust, it just removes the plating and leaves a greyer color which look a bit like rough stainless steel. After its cleaned and dry, apply some wax or whatever sealant.

So I had to get original likeness Kluson machines with the plastic knobs for my 65' Stang. What process ages/browns the plastic knobs? Will the Muriatic work?
I would buy stew Mac dyes, brown and yellow. Find out which ratio of both dyes looks best to you. You have to leave the dye on for at least 24 hours or it wipes off. Also, remove whatever oil is on your plastic. The oil won’t let the dye penetrate the plastic.
Nickel is what is under chrome.
What do you do with the acid after you’re done, reuse it by simply pouring it back into its jug?
With HCl use sodium bicarbonate to neutralize the solution then it can be poured away

What’s difficult to do is to get the hardware to age like the real thing.
Naturally aged hardware has a nice dull, dirt like layer of oxidisation to it along with micro-pitting.

I have. I left them in for 2 hours and they looked great, but the acid fumes destroyed the internals of the tuners. I would not recommend this method on tuners.

Nope acids don’t break down plastics like thinners or solvents do
@@Evox2316_ No, you are wrong. I used this method on my vintage tuners and it completely destroyed the tuner's internals. I would not recommend it.
As a working luthier I see a lot of these home relic'd parts. They all look fake, the reason is this. Patina is one thing (ie corrosion), the second part is natural wear in the correct places. In order to get an effective and distinctly real relic'd part do the following....1) Do as Ron is suggesting to corrode metal then 2) make a 3m pad and gently rub the part again on the areas that would get human contact - tuner buttons, saddles etc. Then place the part in a zip lock bag that contains light stone gravel and a healthy dose of the gunk you get from an engine block. Shake the part in this bag mix.. If you are doing klusons then fill the oil hole with blue tak/plastic tack before the bag trick as it will get gunk in the gears. Clean off and you're done. It's identical to real ageing. Oh yes, wear gloves.
Is there a way to get rid of the shine of the tuners without corroding the metal?
Jlf you have to use acid gas to corrode the metal. If you want to limit the corrosion then limit the exposure to the gas. Steel wool helps. To reduce the corrosion flood the tuner with WD 40 after the process, this will limit further corrosion.

Do you clean the parts after aging?
Rinse with cold soapy water. Towel dry then use a blow dryer to ensure the internal components are dry. Once done use a little gun oil to lubricate.

In the holes? I guess if the stuff wont eat out the cranks or the sprocket gears.... just curious. I think my Classic vibe can use some too. What is good ?

I don't think he watered it down, its already a watered down hydrochloric acid, but it probably won't hurt to. To get rid of just mix with water and dump in a pool. Does great to lower ph levels.
Why do you not explain that you are not actually submerging the hardware in the acid, or how much acid to use, or why you are using two tubs.

Do not use this method on cheap vintage tuners. It will destroy the internals.
Toilet cleaner contains muriatic acid.
I tend to vent things with my breath and lungs for the most natural approach. What I do is I stick my face right up to those little tubs and then I huff it all in and hold my breath and then walk to a window (or my chimney) and blow it outside. that way it doesn't infect the air on the inside of my bedroom.

You stumbled clumsily through that whole video, and didn't actually specify the important parts.
Did you leave the tuner IN the acid, or did you let the acid in the sealed environment corrode the tuner that was in a separate container? You cut the video where a helpful explanation would have been important. Don't do How To videos if you're not actually explaining anything.
It looked kinda obvious that he put them in a a piece of Tupperware, the put that Tupperware in another one with some of the acid in it, then sealed it

I think it is very irresponsible of you to show a very dangerous process without detailing all the steps. You don't explain how to use the acid and how the parts come in contact with the acid. No steps for cleaning the parts afterwards if needed. You don't explain the double bowls. You brush over the most important parts of the application. Really?
