  • Here is a video about how to "relic" guitar parts for that aged vintage look. This is the way I've been doing it for a number of years with great results. It's best of you do this in a well ventilated area and wear rubber gloves. After you remove the parts that you want to age let them sit for a while on cardboard or something similar. Check them in about an hour and rinse them with water. See how they look and if you want more aging then put them in for another round. Cut the time for gold hardware down to 10 minutes and see what your parts look like. Gold will age faster than nickel and certainly chrome or stainless steel. Please feel free to ask any questions and leave me some comments on how this works for you. www.300guitars.com/

    I used this method, and did every thing exactly as you said. I could not be more happy with the end result. I am currently in the process of relicing my 60's classic player strat. all i have left to do is repaint the body and then re assemble everything. I will definitely make a video with the finished product.

    I have used your method twice. Works well, but if it is cold outside the mental parts will sweat causing spots. I used a small glass jar next to the parts for the acid sitting in a plastic shoe box. The fumes aged the parts nicely. The guitar is a Fiesta Red MJT Tele 1959 style.

    Hi Bill, I have a further step that I developed with the acid, that gives a far more realistic appearance. If you look at real vintage parts you'll find areas of great deterioration and hardly any ware on the same part. For instance the bottom of strat saddles, tune-o-matic bridges and stop tails can have bright chrome or nickle work while the top surfaces, which have been exposed to sweat etc are eaten down to the metal. What I do, is cover various areas of the metal with blu tak so that they are not exposed to the vapour. I do the same thing on the under side of plastic parts when I'm staining them with strong coffee etc. It looks really convincing and much more realistic than uniform aging over a whole part. To do it really well, I sometimes do a few steps, perhaps a light overall aging, then various exposure times on certain areas using the blu tak to cover what I want to protect. Hope that is of use, Craig.

    Thanks! I'm going to try it. I have a black 2012 epiphone SG special that I'm going to age the hardware on. I put a pirate sticker on it and I already had skull knobs on it but it gave me an idea for a pirate theme. Rustic hardware and a little bit of paint aging. On the corners.

    I just tried this, and I think I have a few important additions because I had mixed results.
    First, it is important the arrange the parts in the empty tub properly. The acid fumes end up sticking to the metal, as you can see the little droplets on them. I laid down several tuners in the tub, and noticed one side of the strap button was more effected than the other. This is probably because the fumes were not reaching the button side that was facing down. Also, be careful with chrome. He mentions chrome parts may take longer, but you might not like the results in general. All of the parts I did were chrome, and the input jack boat was heavily effected, while my bridge plate didn't change much. The input jack boat came out looking more like aged nickel.
    All in all, this is a good way to age the metal, as all of the parts do look as if they are naturally aged.

    Great video and many thanks for sharing this knowledge. I think the process is called 'pickling metal', a funny way of describing it. I have an important question however. The acidic agent is HCl (hydrochloride) but it is usually diluted with water when sold. The solutions you can purchase vary between 5% and 20% HCl. Could you indicate what concentration the solution you used has? I suppose the higher the concentration the quicker the pickle. Thanks!

    Normally I HATE "relic-ing" because just as you said, Billy, people OVERDO it so much. But I like the nice, subtle and even aging/patina that your method achieves. Might have to do that to my Bigsby-equipped Tele now, just 'cause. :)

  • @zymase
    @zymase 12 лет назад

    Even though I think relicing has gotten out of hand, I think your relic Tele looks really good. Authentic-looking wear spots and the bridge looks real, not overdone which typically looks phony, as you mentioned.

    That makes sense. That would be the only case I'd purposely relic any part of my guitar. Unless that relic was part of an intense moment on stage. I swear never to smash a guitar, but if the mood comes in my music, he's gonna get some bruises. But hey, the bruises add character. Cool video, thumbs up

    Hey Billy, love your videos! I just picked up some muriatic acid about a couple of weeks ago because I have quite a few guitars on hand (quite a few Squiers) but about 4 high end guitars. One of them a '52 telecaster reissue would look great with that aged look. I saw another video where a guy uses etching solution. It seems to work well, but the muriatic acid seems more authentic, especially in your video. It looks really good! What's your take on that? Great videos and tons of respect bro!!!

    Great video! I know this is almost 15 years old now however I have a question related to the muriatic acid that hopefully someone can address/answer....can you re-use the acid and pour it back into it's bottle for future use? Since the acid is not actually touching any of the metal parts in the plastic container, can it be re-used or does it lose its strength once decanted? At leat that saves on having to dispose of what one used. Cheers!

    What's your idea's on getting that "aged yellowing" of white plastic parts on Fender instruments. I get in so many older Strats, Tele's, etc where the original owner lost the Trem Bar, replaced PuP covers, knobs, whatever and he or a new owner wants it repaired and restored to look like it's appropriate age - yellowed plastic parts. I've tried leaving new "white" parts in Black Tea, Green Tea and the color just isn't right. Leaving in the sun for months isn't an option (time) and if the part gets too hot it will distort its shape.

    Good Job! I find that you are using the best process to achieve aging. -Many other ways, but aging is a process of OXIDATION, and any process that will speed oxidation will work. I first thought of using a bleach mixture (sodium hypochorite) in a fume/compression chamber with pure oxygen (similar to your muriatic acid), but your way is better. Etching acid is good for humbucker covers. NO ONE, has perfected maple fretboard wear & only nitro lacquer fretboards can be aged reasonably.
