    This is perfect as I’m in the same situation. I’ve had the gh5 for year but considering making the jump. Thanks for sharing your experiences!

      Thank you for watching and commenting! I plan to make more follow up videos on my switch to Sony... But I'll go ahead and say that, after about 7 months of use, I'm still very happy with the Sony system.

    Good vid, thanks.
    How would you rate the Sony 50mm f1.8, as most folk say it's not good.

    • @carlculpepperimages
      @carlculpepperimages  3 года назад +1

      Thanks for watching! All things considered, I would give the Sony 50 1.8 a 3 out of 5 rating. The image is pretty good for a lower priced lens. A bit of CA, but that is to be expected in this price range. But the focus breathing is pretty bad for video. It really should be even cheaper - like Canon's 50mm f/1.8. I guess Sony's 50 1.8 is a "not-so-thrifty-somewhat-nifty-fifty."

    Thanks! This video it's what was looking for. Can you tell me how bad is the ibis in the A7sIII compared to the GH5? Thanks!

    • @carlculpepperimages
      @carlculpepperimages  3 года назад +1

      I don't know what the performance difference is in terms of stops, but the IBIS in the GH5 is substantially better. While not as gimbal-like as the GH5 IBIS, the A7S iii IBIS is good enough to take some of the jitteriness out of handheld video and stills. Thanks for watching and commenting!

    I’m just hoping for a firmware update that could easily add DCI 4K and flat 24.00fps too. Hopefully they do but we’ll see

      Yes, I would really like to see those two features added, too. In light of how many helpful video features Panasonic has included in the GH5 and S5, I would like to see those added, along with shutter angle, to the A7S iii. Thanks for watching and commenting!

    Great video! You have to shoot in 10bit to use v-log in the GH5. I love v-log in both the GH5s and in the S5. I use Panasonic's Varicam LUTs(mostly Nicest709).

    • @carlculpepperimages
      @carlculpepperimages  3 года назад

      Thanks! I'm sure the S5 is pretty awesome! I always shoot 10-bit for V-Log L on the GH5... I think the problem tends to show up because of how I like to light interior walls. I don't think I've ever noticed it in outdoor shots. I might revisit it again at some point for more experimentation. I will probably hang on to the GH5... I'm too bonded with it to let it go. It's always been rock-solid. Thanks again for watching and commenting!

      @@carlculpepperimages It could be an issue with RUclips compression too. Banding tends to show up on a solid color wall that has one light in the middle. Its especially bad in the shadows. I started to de-saturate my shadows recently and the banding is much less pronounced when I upload to RUclips.

    • @carlculpepperimages
      @carlculpepperimages  3 года назад +1

      @@GeorgeNiksch Thanks for the tip! I'll have to try that.

    • @GeorgeNiksch
      @GeorgeNiksch 3 года назад +1

      @@carlculpepperimages I saw a great video that explains how RUclips compression works and basically they give a lower number of colors to the shadows so that's where your banding typically shows up.

    I am using the GH5 and have been looking for a long while to switch, mainly because of the Autofocus. Now the a7sIII has all the dreamed features: high frame rates, reactive and trustable autofocus, full frame, hi dynamic range and sensitivity, etc. BUT, there is one thing that tends to bother me: when doing camera movement (even a smooth panning) there seems to be a lot of stepping or a discontinuous feeling of separate images being put together rather than a flowing and smooth movement. There is also stepping on AF even when the camera is static. In general, I would like to know your experience on the smoothness of camera movement (also, the hand held stabilization on the GH5 with a proper lens seems unbeatable)

    • @carlculpepperimages
      @carlculpepperimages  3 года назад +1

      Thanks for watching and commenting! I haven't noticed any unusual amount of the stepping that you mentioned with the A7S III. Under what specific circumstances are you experiencing this issue? I'll be on the lookout for these issues when I do more camera movement in the future. As for the GH5 IBIS and Dual IS: I agree, it is class-leading. For the most part, I've been able to shoot handheld with the A7S III with the Sigma 24-70 2.8 with good, smooth results. Putting it into a cage with handles and an external monitor adds enough weight to smooth out the micro jitters, but it's a somewhat heavy rig... and not convenient for a lot of run and gun shooting. For now, I'm keeping the GH5 around for certain situations, because it still does a few things (including IBIS) better. Stay tuned and let me know what you end up with. Cheers!

    Very informative video and topic! I am a current GH5 shooter. I had a couple of questions.
    How does the image stabilization of the A7Siii stack up to the GH5? I'm curious outside of catalyst, because even thought I think that feature is unbelievable, I don't think I'd be excited for another step in workflow.
    Also, how are the color differences? I've heard of people needing to take extra time to get their Sony footage look the way they want to. One thing I've enjoyed about Panasonic, is it's the closest I've seen to Canon colors, as I was a Canon shooter before.

    • @carlculpepperimages
      @carlculpepperimages  3 года назад

      I think the stabilization is better than I expected. But, since I don’t have any of Sony’s stabilized lenses, I’m not experiencing the dual IS I get with GH5 and LUMIX lenses. I haven’t used Catalyst yet. The colors definitely better than I expected. The A7S III colors are excellent, and the A7 III colors are better than what a lot of people describe. But Sony straight out of camera colors are a good bit different from Canon and Panasonic. I hope that helps! Thanks for watching and commenting!

    I am in the same boat, been using the GH5 for 3 years now and thinking of upgrading gear, eyeballing that a7s3 for sure! I do a bit of photos though too but really thinking about it Most everything just ends up digital anyhow. But def would like better low light video and auto focus for sure. That new A1 by Sony has everything but even way more expensive. Will have to get all new glass too. it's only money right.

    • @carlculpepperimages
      @carlculpepperimages  3 года назад +1

      I am very happy with the A7S III so far. And the photos are great for online use as long as you don't need to crop them. I can't even look at the A1... haha! I still prefer the Panasonic menus and UI, but the Sony features and capabilities are significant enough for me to be happy to adapt. Plus, the lens choices are pretty great... and there are a lot of frugal options. Thanks for watching and commenting!

    • @carlculpepperimages
      @carlculpepperimages  3 года назад

      It depends on the circumstances. I think the GH5 does very well when there is plenty of light and you don't need extreme subject separation (as in super shallow depth of field). Overall, it is a much better stills camera than it gets credit for. Thanks for watching!

    Great video. I've always used Sony APS-C, and I really want to be a Panasonic fanboy so bad, but there's just a few
    Achilles' heals that Panasonic cameras have that keep me from switching. I am having the hardest time picking between an S1H and the A7siii. The a7siii has so much more feautures in every which way, but that beautiful image and colour that comes of the S1H is pretty irreplaceable. I think Panasonic would be the perfect system if they had better rolling shutter performance, better autofocus (basically a given for a panasonic camera lol), and no serious 1.5 crop on 4k 60. For now I'm going with the a7siii, but I promise I'm itching to switch to Panasonic once they deal with those few dealbreakers because truly the Panasonic colour can almost compete with big boys like Arri in my opinion.

    • @carlculpepperimages
      @carlculpepperimages  3 года назад

      Thanks Ryan! Panasonic is so close to perfect it's really frustrating. Maybe the talk about them not having access to the phase detect autofocus sensor production is true... I don't know. And, yep, the crop in 4K60 is a little bit of a bummer. Whether or not I buy anymore Panasonic cameras, I hope they will do whatever it takes to compete. More competitive companies will always be better for all of us, no matter which brand we're using. Having said that, I think Panasonic is one of the best when it comes to usability. I'm trying to embrace the differences in the Sony system, but I miss the the video-centric features and tools from the Panasonic system. I would really like to see Sony implement the features like shutter angle and synchro scan in a firmware update for the A7S III. The lack of those settings on the Sony have come into play immediately with what I've shot. But, all in all, the Sony is pretty amazing (if not perfect)! Thanks for watching and commenting!
