I have one Barred named Oreo, she is very friendly and loves to be cuddled. I have a Buff named Vanilla, puts up with being held. I have four Easter Eggers: Eggber, is ok with being held, Coco, doesn’t like being held, Mocha, doesn’t like being held, and Cadbury, I think Cad is a Rooster, He hates being held, he has blue-green feathers, and he’s bossy. I love Oreo the most, they’re about 4 months old.
I had a buff Orpington and she was so sweet. She would follow me or the kids all over the yard and hop up on my shoulder like a parrot. She was very loveable. This was a very enjoyable video, thanks for sharing.
Just to let you know you have your hands on top of the hens wings when holding it makes it a lot easier and then they can't flap there wings and it is a lot easier to hold
Miss Martha is my favorite on your farm. I have a Light Brahma called Daphne Dumpling. Nugget is a leg horn Easter Egger mix and lays blue eggs. We have Silkie Chickens (White, Black, Partridge) and Red and White Laced Cornish. Enjoyed this video. Thank you for sharing.
No, Americaunas are an actual breed that lay blue eggs. EE aren’t a breed, they are a mix between blue layers (usually americauna and aracuna) and lay blue to green eggs (olive eggers are also a mix - brown and blue)... so... yep 👍🏼
A variety of natural foods that they can free range for is the best. You can also do other things like set up a fodder system. This is where you sprout seeds to feed the chickens baby greens. Combining that with meal worms would be a good diet. Farming meal worms or black soldier flies for the larva isn't too difficult. but if you can't do that then go to your local feed store and get a good "layers" food.
The Americana is so purty. Thank you for the lesson in the different types. Our property came with quite a few chickens and roosters. including one big huge giant of a red rooster..I'm almost thinking a Brahma but I'm but not sure. We have a little silky plus quite a barrage of different kinds. We love them to pieces all seem to be great layers. blessings to y'all.
Really loved this chicken video! I love all the great info about chickens. I have never been to a farm. Always lived in the city. I find farm life to be awesome.
They free range like the other chickens and occasionally get some chicken grain and chicken scratch seeds. The majority of their diet is the free range food they find on the farm. The scratch is just like a bird seed mix. They get a little bit of that in the evening as a treat when they go into their coop. The chicken food they may get on rare occasion is an 18% protein mix.
Thanks for the info! l love learning about the different breeds! Gotta love the Leghorn who is Walmart crazy! I really appreciate the time you put into your videos! Awesome!
LMAO,..."The White Leghorn is the craziest of all chickens, their human counterpart are: "the ones in Walmart wearing pajamas", great egg layers I've heard of them, the silkies are cute, even more so the baby silkies but man Big Red is AWESOME! Thumbs up Blake, thanks for sharing and greetings from Mexico! :)
I love the idea of chicken but the closest I every got was raising a quail from one of those little plastic incubator kits they used to have in the back of magazines. Thanks for the breakdown on the breeds. Have a great day!
Thank you for sharing. It is good to know that Silkies are good Nanny's. I've not really understood why people are crazy for them until now. I like to think of them as the Phyllis Diller. My favorites are Rhode Island Reds and Orpingtons. Where I live we have a lot of hawks that love chickens, so I'm looking for Camoflauged Chicken. LOL We had dogs wipe out our first flock of Rhodies.
I live in a suburban development and only have 4 chickens. they lay about 28 eggs per week. You must be up to your ears in eggs there, I guess you sell them. Thanks for the vid.
Great video, love those chickens, a nice variety. I like the laid back style of presenting your farm. By the way, do you live under an approach path for passenger jets?
I just love your farm and like to 'visit' every few days. You are a lucky guy with your fine family, great kids, and nice farm to enjoy. Keep up the good work filming.
+Blake “Daddykirbs” Kirby edgewise, as opposed to directly getting a word in. Think of your basic "box" shape that you're trying to get into an opening slightly less wide than the width of the box but if you turn it slightly "edgewise" the box will go in. I hope I didn't confuse you further with my slightly less than concise explanation. ...
Hold the chicken w/ open palm (breast) w/ 2 fingers going towards the back of the keel bone (between their legs) w/ the otherhand place it on top of their back
I loved the video! We have 3 Silver Leghorns-they are independant (spelling, sorry), stubborn, and fast, kind of like a road runner. So I named one of them Roady. They also stand up to our rooster when they don't want to mate, look him in the eye and say "NO."
I just went and searched my old invoices and it was in fact the Red Ranger Broilers. I guess they don't call them Freedom Rangers there. I must have made that connection in my mind, then just started calling them that :)
That's not how you hold chickens. You keep their wings tucked in....so they feel more secure.... otherwise they flutter/flap around ...you can break/ sprain their wing. It's annoying for you and for the chicken....#1 sign that someone is inexperienced in farming/homesteading or handling chickens.
Ameraucanas are not Easter Eggers and vise versa. What you have is an Easter egger because she does not have a pea comb. Ameraucanas are a true breed and Easter eggers are mixed breeds that do not breed true. They are not the same. This is a huge misconception among the chicken community.
Cool I think I have a schizophrenic Buff Ordington the scardiest hen you ever did see, A Rhoad Island Red who thinks shes a cage fighter, wanting to fight anything, and cares nought for authority, and a Barred Rock shes got a lame foot but shes still a happy bird, she loves to sunbathe now, I think shes the glue that holds em all together. I love my little babies!
I am laughing out loud "If they were people, they would be the one's at Walmart in their pajama's... I think she's pooping on my shoe." HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAA! That is my first laugh of the day. And the best one in a long time! Thanks 2016 Blake Kirby! You for the WIN!
ABSOLUTELY one of your GREATEST Vids! Lovin' your farm journey, fallin' in love with your farm and JOURNEY! Keep on SHARING!!! Take care of each other, and of course all GODS gifts of your farm creatures and nature! Thank you, all of you!
Yep, one of your best! Like you said in the beginning of the video, it's not always about having something to improve, do, or a how to, etc . . IT"S ABOUT LIVING YOUR DREAM!!! Joining you and yours on your Journey, Very enjoyable . . . we're all a part of your farm, family and journey, thru these vids, It's Caring, and Sharing the DREAM! Thanks so much again!!
3 things. I recognize the Bardrock, we raised mostly those over the years. The Americana looks almost like it's part hawk. And the Silkies, all I can say is . . . . . mini poodle ostriches X-D
Silly me, I thought there were only 2 kinds of chickens......McDonalds and KFC. You can blame my sense of humor on my kids, thankfully they're gone now.
Cutting the spur would be kinda like cutting the tip of your finger off. Painful and not needed. Sometime we do remove the hard sheath of the spur if the rooster is too dangerous around the kids. That doesn't happen often.
Sorry I have to disagree with you on this. Cutting the spur is not like cutting a finger off. There are special equipment that allows you to cut the spurs (such as a spur saw cutter, a spur guide). When we cut the spurs we cut up to where the tip starts to round off (Leaving around an 1 inch or 1inch and half(Pretty much to get rid of the tip)). We do this to ensure that everyone is safe, if you or anyone else get poke by their spurs, you don't know what type of bacteria or germs might be injected into you, especially since chickens scratch and dig all day with their legs. I'm just letting everyone know based from experiences with chickens
I am enjoying the new music selections in the videos, Blake. Fun editing. I like the quick chop edits
Thanks for the encouragement! It's been fun editing these. (takes a bit longer, but more fun).
"the ones in Walmart wearing pajamas" LOL. Its sad thats sooooo accurate.
I have one Barred named Oreo, she is very friendly and loves to be cuddled. I have a Buff named Vanilla, puts up with being held. YES, I FOUND THE VERY FIRST COMMENT YEAHHHHHHHHHHHHHH also.... yeah
I had a buff Orpington and she was so sweet. She would follow me or the kids all over the yard and hop up on my shoulder like a parrot. She was very loveable. This was a very enjoyable video, thanks for sharing.
Thank you :) I'm glad you have that memory of such a great chickens!
Just to let you know you have your hands on top of the hens wings when holding it makes it a lot easier and then they can't flap there wings and it is a lot easier to hold
I just want to hug all those chickens 😍😍😍
They would like that I'm sure :)
Teaching is fantastic, but sharing enjoyment, stories, fun stuff is very wonderful too. THANK YOU.
+LilBit AtATime wow it sounds like you have some wonderful birds!
Great info about types..When I was small my Mum kept chickens and I had a 'bardrock' that was my pet👏
They can have very interesting personalities :)
Ameraucanas and Easter Eggers are not the same breed... just sayin'.
Otherwise I love the video!
They're not? 😮
No, Americaunas are an actual breed that lay blue eggs. EE aren’t a breed, they are a mix between blue layers (usually americauna and aracuna) and lay blue to green eggs (olive eggers are also a mix - brown and blue)... so... yep 👍🏼
That was very enjoyable! You should do more videos like this.
My style is evolving and I'm having fun. Thanks for hanging out with me here.
loved the Wal-Mart comment.! hilarious! great video
blake question i have 2 ba and 2rir 5 month old.they look small.what type of feed. do i have 2. give them.first time raise chicken.

i like fluffy butt chickens too
it looks like they're wearing old timey dresses
Really loved this chicken video! I love all the great info about chickens. I have never been to a farm. Always lived in the city. I find farm life to be awesome.
There is a lot to learn on the farm that's for sure!
Check your ordinances, but you can probably have chickens in the city
I liked that DIY Scoop appearing at 1:19. Simple but genius! I will do one like that too....
I love the blue eggs, they are so pretty! You have so many chickens! That's so great!
We like the blue eggs too :)
+Blake “Daddykirbs” Kirby how many acres
Arnold Baesa 5 and a half
Blake Kirby hi
You have some beautiful chickens Blake. Thank you for the neat video.
I'm glad you liked it. :)
I love fluffy butt chickens too! Love to watch them run across the yard! Great video.
what is regular feed like what percentage of protein in the feed
They free range like the other chickens and occasionally get some chicken grain and chicken scratch seeds. The majority of their diet is the free range food they find on the farm. The scratch is just like a bird seed mix. They get a little bit of that in the evening as a treat when they go into their coop. The chicken food they may get on rare occasion is an 18% protein mix.
such a great video! The love and care you have for your chickens really shines through your videos.
cool birds, silkies seem cool.
We do love our Silkies :)
1:13 Cat is tempted to give a piece of his mind to chicken.
Thanks for the info! l love learning about the different breeds! Gotta love the Leghorn who is Walmart crazy! I really appreciate the time you put into your videos! Awesome!

"We love Fluffy Butt Chickens" - I love that!
I love the idea of chicken but the closest I every got was raising a quail from one of those little plastic incubator kits they used to have in the back of magazines. Thanks for the breakdown on the breeds. Have a great day!
We have a few Quail now too. I'm glad you had that experience!
Thank you for sharing. It is good to know that Silkies are good Nanny's. I've not really understood why people are crazy for them until now. I like to think of them as the Phyllis Diller. Loved this video. Your chickens are so pretty, now I want to raise some too.
Thank you. I hope you do get to have some chickens someday!
How do your chicken handle the heat? Is there anything you do for them when it gets 100+ F?
Some do well, some don't. This year has been bad. We've lost 6 Silkies to the heat.
I want to get some chicken and I am in deep deep south TX and wondering what breed does better in the Texas heat.
Most of my larger breed chickens do fine here in TX. The Rhode Island Red does really well.
Thank you for your help :) Blessing be on you and yours. :)
I live in a suburban development and only have 4 chickens. they lay about 28 eggs per week. You must be up to your ears in eggs there, I guess you sell them. Thanks for the vid.
We do sell them :)
Great video, love those chickens, a nice variety. I like the laid back style of presenting your farm. By the way, do you live under an approach path for passenger jets?
Thank you. My style will continue to change as I "find myself"... again LOL
I love this new style for your videos :) More casual.
It's more fun for me too :)
Enjoying very much watching your chicken video. echo my own back yard birds. Thanks.

No, I do not have that breed.

I'm so glad you do. Thank you for being here with me :)
U love mine too?

I do :)
My Mum also had chickens with 'bare necks'..no neck feathers..is that breed still around today!😂😂
They are called Naked Neck or Turkens. Yes they are still available :)
Blake Kirby..Thank you..always wondered😃
Big Red is absolutely gorgeous!
I noticed that your cats seemed to leave your chickens alone? how do the cats do with chickens?
We've never had any problems with cats and chickens.
Sir how to breed a white legorn?
We live in Texas and got Turkins, there seems to not be a lot of information on this breed
Awesome vid, Blake! Also, very cool info about the silkies!!
Thanks :)
I just love your farm and like to 'visit' every few days. You are a lucky guy with your fine family, great kids, and nice farm to enjoy. Keep up the good work filming.
We are blessed... busy, but blessed for sure.
where do you live
Near San Antonio Texas
one of your best, Blake! Wow, that rooster just can't keep his beak shut can he?
Oh, I couldn't get a word in edgewise (not really even sure what edgewise means, but...) !!
+Blake “Daddykirbs” Kirby edgewise, as opposed to directly getting a word in. How do you keep your roosters nice
I think its a toss up. Some stay nice and some don't.
+Blake “Daddykirbs” Kirby I think one is a nice one out of 19

DEAR GOD, I LOVE YOUR FAAAARRRRRM!!!!!
I loved the video! We have 3 Silver Leghorns-they are independant (spelling, sorry), stubborn, and fast, kind of like a road runner. So I named one of them Roady. They also stand up to our rooster when they don't want to mate, look him in the eye and say "NO."
Is big red a breeding rooster or a meat rooster
He's a breeder for meat chickens.
How can I get
where did you buy your freedom rangers from
um, If memory serves me correctly these were purchased from murray mcmurray
Was it freedom rangers or red rangers
I just went and searched my old invoices and it was in fact the Red Ranger Broilers. I guess they don't call them Freedom Rangers there. I must have made that connection in my mind, then just started calling them that :)
@ blake kirby so you did buy your red rangers from mcmurray hatchery
james flames I did.
Nice video!🐣🐥
how many silkies do you have
A production red is a cross between a Rhode Island Red and a New Hampshire Red.
I like your videos
Thank you :)
I’m pretty sure he’s experienced lmaoooo
Agree!!
would love to have silky in Thailand, can't find it here
So much good information.
What do you do with the extra roosters?
um production reds and RIR are two breeds not the same name for one breed
Ameraucanas are not Easter Eggers and vise versa. What you have is an Easter egger because she does not have a pea comb. Ameraucanas are a true breed and Easter eggers are mixed breeds that do not breed true. They are not the same. This is a huge misconception among the chicken community.
you have all the breeds of chickens
I have all of these shown in this video :)
My CHICKEN breeds are Amariconas Roadisland red and white leghorns
I'm sure you get lots of yummy eggs!
I'm glad I could provide some smiles :)
When our new house gets built, we are getting chickens! But I don't know any breeds :( so this vid will jelp
1:09 the cat said something to the chicken when it left......
ABSOLUTELY one of your GREATEST Vids! Lovin' your farm journey, fallin' in love with your farm and JOURNEY! Keep on SHARING!!! Take care of each other, and of course all GODS gifts of your farm creatures and nature! Thank you, all of you!
Really? One of my best? I'm really glad you liked it! It was fun to edit and shoot.
Did you thank the rooster for all of his wonderful eggs?
Americaunas and Easter eggers are different!!!! Americaunas are pure and Easter eggers are a cross breed to lay colored eggs!!!
+me 23 thank you for that correction. However, I'm not wrong that some people do use the names interchangeably.
+Blake “Daddykirbs” Kirby It still is incorrect.
:)
3 things. I recognize the Bardrock, we raised mostly those over the years. The Americana looks almost like it's part hawk. And the Silkies, all I can say is . . . . . mini poodle ostriches X-D
+Joshua Richards sometimes we call the Americaunas "war hawks" lol
Silly me, I thought there were only 2 kinds of chickens......McDonalds and KFC. You can blame my sense of humor on my kids, thankfully they're gone now.
Lol
You don't like Chic-fillet?
+Blake “Daddykirbs” Kirby I don't have that where I live
Neither do I. Actually, we do have a McD's here, but have to travel 25 miles for KFC.
Hi Luke. Did you catch that black rooster?
Haha, no we didn't. He didn't want caught that night.
how to do feed your red rangers so they don't have leg problems and don't get too big
The Rangers have never shown a tendency to over eating. They eat like regular chickens with no special feed.
Awesome! Once I have enough $$ I'm gonna get myself a farm (:
Why don't you cut the spur?
Cutting the spur would be kinda like cutting the tip of your finger off. Painful and not needed. Sometime we do remove the hard sheath of the spur if the rooster is too dangerous around the kids. That doesn't happen often.

puhistrain Thank you for sharing your experience. I'll look into it more.
do you have a easter Eger
I do have a couple, yes.
Chickens are the most amazing animals on earth! Thank you for your breed insights and hilarious commentary.(=
Love the sulcata
I prefer the journey. Yeah.
Yes! I'm glad you like it :)
Thank you great video
Sound of FREEDOM
that's cool
