*Hot take:* More brands should offer their entry/value tier HTs as frame options. A lot of people would love to move parts over from an older bike or just like building their bikes but don't want/need a $800+ USD frame.
Yup. Building up a entry level Rockhopper up with the Rockshox Judy, XT 1x11, SLX brakes, and Carbon wheels. The go was exactly what I wanted and the whole bike was $500, so cheaper than most frames.
@@hardtailparty I honestly don’t mind 135qr. Even being a big guy, I’ve been riding MTB’s for over 25 years and have never had an issue with qr axles, especially for XC/Trail. Also, I think that companies are finally hitting the Geo sweet spot for new riders on entry level bikes. 67-68.5 degree HT angles offer just the right mix of Handlebar/Lean turning that riders of both styles can enjoy the frame. That also allows new riders to learn to lean more, but not force them into it. The new entry Rockhopper geo suits this, but best would probably be the Marin Team Marin’s. Great bike, just wish the frame was a bit cheaper. At least most entry level bikes come with a 44mm head tube so they can be upgraded to a Tapered fork with a EC44 lower headset cup. It’ll change the geo about .5 degrees and increase stack by 12mm, but not too bad.
I've got the 2019 scout best hard tail I've ever owned !!! owned it since new its done school runs with kids seats on it work runs when the cars been used . shredding trails u name it . highly suggest these frames to people
I love seeing the boutique bikes but this like you said is everyone’s bike. It’s a frame I’m considering so I’m excited for your review. Thank you for all you do for the MTB community!
I purchased the v2 frame (M) last year and swapped all of my components to it and have NOT regretted it one bit. The geometry is perfect for play and being forgiving while learning to handle increasingly difficult trails. For the price, geo and quality, it can't be beat in my opinion.
Excellent video! Love the fact that you are finally getting to review the Scout, and I am thrilled to see you giving an open minded look at a bike that has geo that isn’t your favorite. Can’t wait to see the ride review!
Hey Steve since you mentioned chain reaction cycles I think you should look at the vitus sentier vrx for the price the spec is amazing the geometry looks pretty decent as well
Glad to see you got a Nukeproof on the channel...... was looking at this frame today and I must say I'm a fan like many others. ✌🏻🙂 and the yellow is beautiful.........I'm sold on the visuals 💛
The Nukeproof Scout is one of my favorite frames, just love the way it looks in yellow. This reminds me of the Octane One Sour frame I bought from Chain Reaction a couple of weeks ago. Seems like a solid frame for its price, but they seem unbelievably rare for some reason. Would be interesting to see some proper reviews of it.
Another great first look Steve, nobody else comes close. Looking forward to the review even though I’m not digging the reach and STA numbers on this one.

I wanted to purchase a Scout from Chain Reaction in late 2019 (it was a 2018 model), but I had other Life expenses get in the way....Bummer, because it was listed at $1800 USD plus shipping (around $150 at the time for standard) w/ a full Shimano SLX build, Fox Performance 34, and everything else was their house brand components.
Hey Steve, thank you for all the behind the scenes looks at these frames and your thoughts. How does the 29 pound weight that you mention fit on the spectrum from a weight perspective? In other words, what could the Scout look like from a lighter build perspective similar to your videos on turning your enduro hard tails into xc bikes?
The best way to answer that would be to compare just frame weights between the two. I can't remember the exact weight of the paradox v3, but it's on my first look vid.

@@samleary2733 Yep! That’s what I did. I took it down as far as I possibly could before having to touch the gusset. I also extended the notch down as well. It pretty much looks factory at this point but I can now run a longer dropper. Which isn’t that big of a deal on trails but when riding jumps and pump-track it’s so nice.
good show my dude, cool to see the new 290 (medium) on review. I dig my 2021 275 medium... the reach is a little short for me @ 5'-9" but I don't always notice it

This model seems to tick all my boxes except I would prefer a 65.5-66 degree head tube angle.
Geo seems close to perfect. I personally don’t want a hardtail with seat angle much steeper than 75, but a full suspension could probably be 80 and be fine. I also think a trail hardtail should be setup with 140mm or less and 65 or less head angle.
Awesome! I built up the previous gen frame with a 130mm pike and it’s been perfect for the Colorado front range. I’m curious to hear your thoughts on it.
It just strikes me time and time again these days, that every time I see a frame with some poppy colors I just feel joy. I feel the whole bike scene have been flooded with dark muddy colors for so long now that you almost forget other colors exist too. Well, other things like cars as well have gotten pretty sad and boring color options for a long while too so these trends has got to go. I got no problem that the color grey exist, but when one car had 4 color options and all 4 are just different shades of grey, you know you're getting screwed. Bring colors back. That'll be all.
Great review, I'll be on the lookout for your ride impressions. I just purchased the Scout 290 in XL, I'm thinking it's the Gen 2, flat Grey in color, did not have the chain stay protector. Have 2 rides so far, the more classic geometry seems to fit my riding style.
Hey Steve, nice review. I was one of those ‘overfork for stack guys!’ I ran a 150 pike with just enough tokens to make the last 20-30mm ‘emergency only’ With most really cutting edge, slacker and longer bikes, I find that a lower stack 120mm fork doesn’t worry me anymore, I no longer feel like a low stack equals road bike feel off road! I can confirm that the UK has plenty of steep (often slippery!) stuff. Seat angle here is a bit of a mystery. Don’t forget the Pipedream Sirius is a UK bike with a super steep seat tube angle. Maybe they still think ‘hang off the back’ for attacking downhill? I don’t know who leads their development these days, but I’ve even seen a GMB presenter run the mega avalanche on the 2nd gen scout here on RUclips. Keep up your awesome work.
nukeproof has a winning recipe with the scout. haven't tried the new scout but i was faster on a 2019 scout than i am on my kona esd. something about this bike makes it very fast and capable
The gen3 dropper routing is much improved from Gen2 (which I built up for my wife) which comes out the bottom of the down tube, and loops externally under the BB. Who thought that was a good idea?? Coincidentally it is now almost exactly like the Ragley Marley frame (which I built up for one of my kids). Not a coincidence since CRC/Wiggle own both brands…. But really, I’m struggling to see the distinction between the frames/brands.
Interesting about the gen 2 dropper routing because two of my sons have 2021 Cub Scouts and they use the dropper routing Steve described on the new frame, even the same plastic guides where the cable enters and exits the frame.
Hi there HP! I'm in need of a replacement. I want to run my Rockshox Sid Sl 100mm fork with this frame. 5har makes the HTA and STA a bit steeper and the reach a bit longer.. I'm used to the Vitus Rapide. Do you think it's a good or bad idea?
I kinda like how Ragley/Nukeproof aren't going full blown modern geo, I think after so many Hardtail iterations they've got it dialled pretty well, looking forward to hear your thoughts as always 🤙
@@ASAP2525 I was referring to their reach and seat tube angles which are relatively "conservative" numbers (compared to a Honzo ESD, or Sirius, for example), the HTAs are definitely modern
I love the videos Steve. You should cover effective top tube length and what it means for sizing if you do a lot of seated pedaling. You hint that this bike may be too long despite the conservative reach. I'm the same height as you but with a short torso and arms. I've found that my preferred range for effective top tube length is 545-560 mm with a 40-50 mm stem. I can handle 580 mm with a 35 mm stem, but my body doesn't like this on rides longer than about 25 miles. I like this frame, but even the size small 27.5 version has an effective top tube close to 600 mm. I'm glad that there are now many hardtail frame options with slack head tube angles, but they are getting too long for me to comfortably ride. The size small Santa Cruz Chameleon has the same issue. I'm in Colorado, so there are lots of long seated climbs. I also pedal to the trailhead most days. I can see how I might not be as affected by the longer effective top tube if I only rode rolling terrain where I didn't spend much time in the saddle, but that's not my reality.
@@Windband1 I could work on flexibility more. Regardless of my personal fit preferences, it seems like there must be a fair number of people even shorter than me that may be experiencing fit issues as the smallest frames keep getting longer.
I’ve got the 2021 pro model and it feels amazing compared to my old giant fathom! I’m wondering how much faster the bike would feel If a swapped the assegai/dissector tire combo for dissector front rekon rear?
REALLY interested to see how you get on with this one! Curious if you have you seen the scoutin about video serious nukeproof released? There is 3 parts over the span of quite a few years, really really great hardtail movie, highly recommended! Would love to see your thoughts on a comparison between short and long travel fork setup on this bike mateas a lot of us in the UK like to run bigger travel 150minimum upto 170 is actually quite common, Blake Samson's scout is setup with 170mm and Elliot Heap Nukeproof team rider also had is at 170!
I run a 170mm Zeb on mine which is already taller than a 170mm Lyrik. Works well, I ride steep tracks with drops and jumps and no cracks yet! Just wish the STA was steeper for climbing. Geo like a Hello Dave or Moxie is what is needed for 160/170mm forks.
@@slipperyseal762 oo nice 170mm Zeb sounds like a lot of fun! I run 170mm dvo diamond on my hardtail and like you I feel the same, I think the steep stuff is where the long travel really shines, I'm 20mm overforked so I feel you on the STA haha
@@slipperyseal762OTT is amazing but you need to get it dialed in just right or its not doing that much. It depends on the riding you do for sure, 160-170mm hardtails are just so fun down steep but 140-150 give you the best bang for buck hands down with that playful pump track feel!

I'm not hopeful of ever getting one in, but I'd like to
I love the videos Steve.
Are you doing yoga?
@@Windband1 I could work on flexibility more. Regardless of my personal fit preferences, it seems like there must be a fair number of people even shorter than me that may be experiencing fit issues as the smallest frames keep getting longer.
@@NoCoBG Are you slamming your saddle forward? That helps.
I only see the nukeproof scout 290 in size medium would this be to big for me at 5 feet 5 inches 29 inseam ?????
I’ve got the 2021 pro model and it feels amazing compared to my old giant fathom! I’m wondering how much faster the bike would feel If a swapped the assegai/dissector tire combo for dissector front rekon rear?
It would be noticeably faster.
Could I put 27.5 wheels with 2.4 front and back on the new xl 290 scout. ?.A few months time ,get a set of 29er wheels ?
Man i would love to see you do geo measurements on a san quentin 3, i got one and the stack is so low that i am running a 60mm riser on it!
The stack is absurdly low on that bike.
@@hardtailparty It really is, even with the riser it doesnt feel higher enough, but it does feel 100x better.
How can I get a complete 29er of this bike in Large
What is the chainring size?
If I get the frame and add a longer fork, like a 150 or 160mm, does that mean the head tube angle will be more slack?
Yes among other geo changes.
Strange that the 175mm dropper doesn't fit, ive put a 200mm dropper on my scout 2020 but that was a XL frame tho
And therein lies the difference. Larger frames have longer seat tubes.
no stock on the 290 yellow already from the site.
It's brand new, just announced today. It takes a little while for stock to trickle in after a bike is announced.
@@SUPER8ALTERN8 The Diamond and the OTT will be great on a scout. Smooth! I may drop my zeb to 150mm and see how it rides.
@@slipperyseal762OTT is amazing but you need to get it dialed in just right or its not doing that much.
It depends on the riding you do for sure, 160-170mm hardtails are just so fun down steep but 140-150 give you the best bang for buck hands down with that playful pump track feel!
I've done vids on different travel lengths. 130mm is my sweet spot for travel. Any more and it starts to ride like a stapler for me.
Hey Steve, you mentioned that Nukeproof and Ragley have the same parent company, is Ragley also part of Wiggle/CRC?
Yes
Which one frame you think it's better nukeproof scout or ragley marley???
It depends on so many things. Which is better, a jeep or a WRX?
@@hardtailparty sorry?😅 I just love both frames and i don't know which one is stronger that's what I'm trying to find out
how tall are you this is M? iam 183 is large size ok ? or maybe M
Does the 290 Work with 27PLUS tyres?
I know there has been a 275 model. But versatility.
See video
@@hardtailparty Great. That's why your number one ;).
Look forward to the review.
