  • An aromatic annual plant native to India, Basil is a highly fragrant herb that's been greatly appreciated. It was particularly esteemed by the ancient Greeks, who called it basilikon, meaning "royal." Basil is the quintessential herb for seasoning tomatoes. It also goes very well with garlic, onions, and olives, and is used to liven up pasta, salads, eggs, vegetables, fish, seafood, chicken and pork. Certain varieties are also used in desserts and beverages. Keep fresh basil OUT of the fridge. The cool temperature will burn its delicate leaves causing them to wilt and brown. Instead, wrap it in a slightly damp paper towel and stand in a glass of cold water in a cool, dark dry place.
