    The Legendary Monsterverse is one of the few franchises I can remember making a financial comeback after having decreasing box office returns with each sequel. Even making Godzilla vs. Kong was a risk after King of the Monsters and that was before the pandemic.
    I wonder if being one of the first major movies to release after the pandemic gave it a shot in the arm since there was less competition and in a weird way, was one of the few movie series that actually benefited from the pandemic.

    • @charvolth
      @charvolth 2 месяца назад +3

      There was a bit of promotion in traditional areas. I think the middling reviews and audience reaction didn't help. I thought it was enjoyable, but the script had its flaws. I am not totally surprised by the sharp second weekend drop. The faithful came out opening weekend, but the general audience draw seems weaker. Actually I went in to last weekend not expecting much from GxK. but a good performance from that and the weaker GB offering, it made sense.

They must have spent a lot of money over several months on PR, events, gifts, etc to push this movie through in the awards season. That must have made a significant dent on the profit of $139m shown in your calculations

    In the preview I saw, it wasn't his dead girlfriend's twin that he was pursuing but basically a stranger who he has convinced himself had to be similar to his dead girlfriend because his dead girlfriend was born via IVF and he discovers that another couple adopted one of the frozen inseminated IVF eggs that his dead girlfriend had been a part of and so now he is on the hunt for this person since it is the biological "twin" of his dead girlfriend.

      Dan means that it has closed in the US. Moreover, last weekend Oppenheimer made only 2,57 million in Japan; usually movies have great legs there, but I don't see it making more than 12-15 million, so maximum 974-977 worldwide and 4 to 6 millions more in profit

      According to Wikipedia, it had a budget of $35 million and a worldwide gross of $115 million, so it presumably didn't lose money (unlike some of last year's "prestige" releases like Napoleon and Killers of the Flower Moon which were primarily streaming releases).

    Probably won't give it a serious worldwide take boost from Japan but GxK doesn't open there til April 26th I think. This weekend will be a good tell if it can come close to the 200 million domestic take. Hopefully it doesn't drop more than 50%

    • @crestedargo4663

      I think it will close around 175: the Friday to Sunday drop in its opening weekend was pretty strong, which means it's a quite frontloaded movie, so I would expect at least a 60% drop next weekend. But I hope it can reach 200 million!

    I feel like the keep making Ghostbusters stuff to sell merchandise. I don't have the numbers just a theory. Ghostbuster is one of my fav movies but man do I wish they made a tv show that was like a cross between Supernatural and the animated show. These new movies are just okay. The most supernatural thing in Afterlife was a Walmart that looked clean.
    Also, I heard that one Sunday Late Night with the Devil made 666,666 in gross but I'm not sure if that is just internet rumor.

      Last April was the crowded month for me. This year March is the more crowded, though if the releases are not too limited, I am probably getting in 15-16 films in April. It is getting padded out with re-releases of older films. April till early May there are a bunch of Nolan films getting limited releases.
