25:10 "You have to bring logic... to stupidity like this." May just be my quote of the year, lmao! 🤣🤣🤣
Dan, your bit about the posters for "Monkey Man"; "The First Omen"; "Scream 6" and all the others made by the same firm was so funny. Then you mentioned the Wahlberg & Sweeney posters looking at each other and I couldn't stop laughing. You are hilarious. Love your channel. Thank you!
Dan doesn't know me if he thinks no one care about a chart with the most popular movie title that shared their name with a famous wrestler. Pretty much my favorite chart so far.
My favourite WWF wrestler growing up was Joey "Oppenheimer" Marcello. But these days Domingo "Look Who's Talking Too!" Ramirez is doing interesting things at AEW.
I'll be very impressed if Dan did this without Danielle Radford or Joe Starr's help.
@@BonJoviBeatlesLedZep Charts where "They Said the Thing!" #please
It was mildly amusing.
My favourite dumb charts Dan did was the bee chart 😂😂
No Dan you nailed it in your review: Civil War was great BECAUSE it was about war and people, not politics.
Maybe I should watch this movie if that’s what it’s about 🤔. The trailers looked terrible
@@MaxxRemKing1yeah the trailers are not impressive. But the movie is an experience, especially if you don't bring the expectations of being handheld.
@@mediaikonz Im a big A24 fan so I was surprised when I saw the trailer and didn't like it. But hearing what it is really about has got me interested to check it out
there is no such thing as war, AND people, without politics
I didn't want it to be about democrats vs republicans or anything but it was a bit of a let down because it was centrist and apolitcal that it had nothing to say other than war is bad. We all already know that war is bad.
As someone who just came back from watching Civil War, this movie is frankly amazing. I saw a trailer when watching another movie and was hooked on the idea of watching journalist in a war zone and what that life is like and it didn’t disappoint.
Grosse Point Blank was awesome. Definitely worth a watch.
Toni Colette was robbed of an Oscar nomination! (Anytime heridtary is brought up)
B- Cnemascore isn't surprising considering A24 marketed it as "White House Down" when it is a much slower, almost meditative but utterly terrifying art-house horror.
i dont think the movie is very slow at all. we barely got any of the road trip moments and every 10 minutes it switched to a different scene. christmas sniper, car jumping, jesse plemons, gas station, stadium camp, building shootout. i felt the movie was actually teetering on being exhausting with all these sequences back to back to back
I had to look it up and both White House Down as well as Olympus Has Fallen have A- Cinemascores. That's fascinating. I personally thought White House Down was goofy fun while Olympus Has Fallen was excessive violence porn. Neither has really stood the test of time over the last decade.
That was my thought coming out of the theatre, best horror film of the year so far.
@@terrymcginnis01I think you also have to call Olympus Has Fallen goofy fun as well. When the secretary of state recited the pledge of allegiance while being dragged down the hallway everyone in our theater simultaneously giggled
It's slow compared to most war films, the expectations are different.
Best box office coverage out there!
To be fair, the Money Man poster is an actual shot in the film.
If Dan can get an interview, I would be very intrigued to hear from a rep at Legendary Entertainment about movies geared towards both American and Chinese audiences, how the different stakeholders are managed, and thoughts about how Chinese movies might play stateside.
I think it's safe to say that Dan cares about these charts more than anyone else. Especially the WWE/WWF chart.
Big recommendation for Gross Point Blank- funny action comedy with a terrific 80s soundtrack (My brother got the CD on import that's how much he loved it!)
I look forward to your "retro review" of Grosse Pointe Blank! It's such a solid and nowadays underrated crime comedy. Also, agreed on Liar, Liar. PEAK Jim Carrey among a filmography of quality.
Dan - I know you constantly have new movies to watch, but you owe it to yourself to circle back to watch Grosse Pointe Blank. It's a great movie that I think you'd really enjoy!
Great work as always, Dan. Thanks for providing us with the data week after week.
Civil War was so well shot. Any moving frame could've been a still photograph itself.
I really enjoyed its somewhat misleading marketing. That European-directed distance from the 'why' of the war gave it a haunting similarity to some of the great American-made war films taking place overseas. The photojournalist angle was both inspiring and terrifying.
All the cast gave great performances, too. Dunst looked like she hadn't slept in decades and in just a few scenes Nick Offerman really brought it. Jesse Plemons, of course, was great.
The tension throughout this film was awesome.
Hope more people contribute to its Box Office. Worth it.
I really hope Garland doesn't follow through on his plan to quit directing.
You have never seen Grosse Pointe Blank?!? Please correct this omission! It is an excellent film! One of my all time favorites... Not that you know me. But it it really is a fantastic film.
I don't know how it is in other countries, but Civil War opens one week later here in Sweden. So maybe Civil War wasn't out in many countries as the same opening weekend as America. So it's international numbers might get stronger if it opens this week in more countries
New chart idea: compare post pandemic total box office in a bar graph every three months. It’s interesting to see how the box office is doing compared to the weekend average, but it’s not always easy to see how healthy the box office is year by year.
Love the wrestling list. Thats good stuff!!!
Dude! I promise you'll enjoy Grosse Pointe Blank.
Double commenting to ask how have you never seen Grosse Pointe Blank!?!?!?!?! Please remedy this tragedy soon. Such a great movie with a killer (pun intended) soundtrack.
Must be being a certain age. Gen X was all over that.
@josephfisher426 yeah, I agree about the age thing. I'm Dan's age and I have seen that movie, but I caught it randomly on a movie channel years ago
I’m very happy for Kristen Dunst career she’s been doing great for the past ten years
Just wanna throw it out there, I’d love to see a box office profit/loss breakdown for Civil War in the coming weeks!
I still can't believe the 2016 Ghostbusters is the second best critically reviewed film of the franchise behind the original.
That really is crazy. I haven‘t read all the reviews for 2016 Ghostbusters but I assume there was a lot of good will on the side of the critics. Ghostbusters 2 (which I personally like a lot) is not too far behind with a 56 score on metacritic. However, as with most movies from this time far fewer reviews are factored in which might skew the rating. The user score for both movies tells a different stroy: Ghostbusters 2 sits at a 7.0 rating compared to a measly 2.7 for the 2016 installment.
I really enjoyed Civil War.
Grosse Point Blank really is wonderful. It’s well worth a watch, Dan; I think you might like it a lot.
Hey look! Dan flashed back to my birthday weekend! Thanks for the birthday gift, Dan!
Very happy for Kirsten Dunst. She went from a peppy teen star in Bring it On to becoming a very good actress into her 40’s. Most young actors especially young women don’t get that opportunity.
I think you misremember her youth career. Even at young age she starred in some ambitious stuff. From serious dramas like Virgin Suicides to indie off kilter comedies like my beloved Drop Dead Gorgeous, she has had a good taste (plus acting ability) and her career reflects that throughout the entire run.
Shes always killed it
A few movies didn’t perform well, like Drop Dead Gorgeous (which is indeed fantastic) and Marie Antoinette. But I’ve always rooted for her after Interview With The Vampire (and Power of the dog was a winner)
She's always been excellent from Interview with the Vampire onwards.
I was going to say Jumangi
Might we see a return of the indie theater spotlights? I'd advocate for The Little in Rochester, NY!
This weekend I saw La Chimera. Walked in completely blind-- this is the joy of my 52-weeks of movies project-- when I'm not interested in any of the big releases this week (I know I won't be able to stomach Civil War) I look a little deeper and take a shot with something I have no expectations of. And this week, it turned out to be one of my favorites so far this year.
Caught it also. Thought it was good, but the ending left me pondering a lot. I was trying to find reviews, but haven't seen anything yet.
@@charvolth It was fairly ambiguous. I interpreted it as Arthur dying in the cave-in and reuniting with Beniamina by following the red string into the light, but I suppose it could also be representing her spirit guiding him to the way out, an inversion of his dreams, where she is pulling him out into the sunlight and he is pulling her down into the underworld.
@@Qegixar Yeah, the red string leading him out would make for a nice way to come full circle. This reminder of her also saves him, though I was thinking, the guys he was dowsing for did have a steam shovel. Though they could have also bailed on him.
23:28 Very good. I predicted “Movies Titled After Things The Main Character Doesn’t Do.”
As an avid Conan fan that doesnt live in Japan, seeing it on Dan's chart warms my soul
Well played on the Wrestling List :) Interesting that Screen Engine/Comscore's PostTrak polled Civil War's attendees' political leanings & despite the movie being so deliberately non-partisan, it still didn't have Conservatives flocking to go see it! It had a very well utilised $50m production budget & $20m+ marketing budget, but all its audience score metrics like most of Alex Garland's movies aren't overly impressive with Ex Machina being the only one of the 4 movies he's both written & directed that both critics & audiences have loved! Its B- CinemaScore, 76% RT (3.9/5), 76% PostTrak, 6.3/10 Metacritic & 7.6/10 IMDB audience ratings are solid but not great overall in terms of its box office legs beyond its very good $25.7m Opening Wkend.
23:17 OMG, I screamed
I was expecting movies that either involve creatures that sting or the actor/singer Sting. Hearing pro wrestling trivia made my day 😂
You absolutely made my day with the WWE/WWF chart, especially since when you said Sting, I did straight away think of the wrestler (especially since he recently retired), Please do keep making these charts Dan, we see them, we acknowledge them and we do appreciate them!
Loved the specialty chart - any word on where 1974's Earthquake would've ranked (either regular or inflation adjusted)?
loved the wrestling names chart ^^ Now I only need a wrestlemania 40 review : )
The posters run is ridiculous lol
That Liar Liar poster makes it look like the movie is called Trust Me.
Does someone know why Dan suggests that a movie like Dune 2 (with a budget of 190 million) might have a 150 million budget for marketing, while for a movie like Guardians of the Galaxy 3 (with a budget of 250 million) he suggests marketing costs might be 100 million?
I know marketing is always a big question mark for movies, but I don't understand these two different assumptions.
Grosse Pointe Blank is amazing. But I think it's a film of it's time.
Dan, thanks for another great video.
Im curious for your next Charts to see if Spiderman (2002) will crack the Top Ten this week. Showings are selling out at a lower ticket price point.
My theater had to add showings, and the hallway was like a mini Comic Con. Im so curious. See you next week.
I would have never guessed I would hear Al Snow and Del Wilkes name drops here of all places! Somewhere, Joe Starr is smiling.
You brought up that 30 Days of Night poster but let’s not hide it that’s one of the best posters I think ever made.🙏🏻
Grosse Pointe Blank is a fun watch for sure.
Grosse Pointe Blank is a fantastic movie. In fact, it is Citizen Kane of professional assassin goes to his high school reunion films.
I'm glad the re-release of Civil War is doing so well. I thought Tom Holland and Robert Downey Jr. were great in that movie.
You mean 'Civil War', the 9-part documentary series by Ken Burns? Yes, the success of the re-release is shocking to me, too
😂
I was at the gym today and Civil War from marvel came on and I was laughing
That part where Mary Jane got the infinity gauntlet was wild
When Captain America kicked in the door of the Oval Office and declared "It's civil discoursin' time!", everyone in the theatre stood up and clapped and cheered. 🤪
Dan, long time viewer, inconsistent commenter. I paused and wanted to say- I send screenshots of your charts all the time. One to my movie bestie and I was able to send one to my music bestie who is a huge Wrestling fan. They are now waxing Poetic on how "Avatar" was a deep cut and how they haven't thought of them in awhile. I want to say how much I appreciate you, your personality and care you bring into what you do more often; but I had to comment in defiance and tell you, somebody who really cares about the niche saw the chart and loved it. As always, thank you Dan!!!
Grosse ppint blank is a classic mid to late 90s cult movie. It has a notable comedic death scene involving a televsion set
At least with the Monkey Man poster, it makes sense when you watch the movie. There is literally a shot of doors parting on Dev Patel in a red-lit elevator when he reaches the top of the nightclub. It's very striking.
I would have found a chart of movies that featured at least one giant spider to be much more interesting than a chart of movies that share a name with a WWE/WWF wrestler, but that's just me. I think The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King is #1 on that chart. Arachnophobia would be in there somewhere, I guess.
Dan you need to check out Grosse Pointe Blank, it's not just hilarious, it's unique. Not one any film buff should skip.
i find it hard to believe there wasn't a horror movie called The Undertaker at some point.
Hey Dan, you forgot to hit Return between the first and 2:28 timestamp, so the chapters are a little messed up
Fixed!
@@DanMurrellMovies Thanks! Love the consistent content lately
I love rules and logic for charts! Epic show Dan, thanks! 😂
You should see Grosse Point Blank... It really is wonderful. Quirky in a way that helps it hold up and fantastic performances.
Conan with the 2nd best opening of all time in Japan. Crazy how big that franchise still is.
3rd place is btw the last Conan Film.
Loved the surprise chart involving wrestling names. Al Snow is definitely under appreciated
There are what 5 horror films currently playing in the domestic market. They are cannibalizing each other which is why i think Sting didnt do too well with almost 1000 theatres. Also the wrestling chart is the kinda thing i love seeing in these vids. This show is a must watch each week for me thank you Dan.
For movie posters, red and black are the new orange and blue
Yeah, go see Grosse Pointe Blank. It’s fantastic!
Glad A24 didn’t get burned by their strategy of “let’s give $50 million to the guy famous for making great movies that don’t make money.”
Dan, you gotta watch Grosse Pointe Blank!
I am so glad you mention the potential box office discrepancy with legendary pictures in China
That wrasslin’ chart is now Exhibit A for why Dan is the best in the biz of box office breakdowns!
23:15 It did not open high enough to make the top 5, but the Brad Pitt and Morgan Freement movie Seven ($13m opening) was also the name of the notorious wresting gimick "Seven" for Dustin Rhodes. He is better known as Goldust and the older brother of new champion Cody Rhodes. Dustin infamously broke character seconds after debuting as Seven in the ring ,to trash the gimick and mention how stupid he looked in the costume !
“U hafta bring logic to stupidity” - Dan Murrel 2024 😆
We r here for it, Dan 😏
you really should check out Grosse Pointe Blank John Cusaack and Dan Aykroyd do some really fun work in it
Had quite the interesting weekend. Caught Civil War on Sunday, then Spider-Man on Monday. So it was a sort of Kirsten Dunst weekend. Also caught Sting on Monday. So I guess an Arachno-Monday with a side of Dunst. Really liked Civil War, and glad it did well this weekend, Here's hoping its profitable enough for A24 to go for some bigger swings.
Also caught Arcadian, would not have been bad but one of the casualties of that apocalypse was camera tripods. Every shot was looked like it was done with a hand-held camera. It was just obnoxious.
Grosse Pointe Blank is definitely worth watching if you have the time.
My bois Goji and Kong keep raining green love it and man the Boy and the Heron, who had that on the bing cards, Hayao Miyazaki is a master and now a king making money with literally almost no advertising.
Shawn Michaels Wrestled as The Heartbreak Kid. The Heartbreak Kid starring Ben Stiller came out in 2007. Domestic $36,787,257. International $90,981,533. Worldwide $127,768,790.
I dont know if other youtubers do these breakdown but I love them. Youre awesome Dan! Aside from the AI convo we had the other day i agree with you about 98% of the time and I always love your content. Thank you brother! Cheers!
Dan you savage, respect on the sick burn about the posters lol
The wrestler name chart is officially my favorite
May be there are more nerdy people than you think, Dan. Bring more such 'asoteric' speciality charts. This one was great.
I love that a spider horror film shares the program with the cult classic: Anaconda
Arachnophobia is also one of those classic spider horror movies that make me smile.
I hope Sting makes the Top 10, would love to see a spider horror movies chart 🕸️🕷️🕸️🕷️ (and no, even the terrible Spider-man movies cannot count as true horror) 😉
I can confirm Grosse Pointe Blank is great. A cheeky look at an assassination in reflection as he receives an invitation to his 10 year high school reunion.
If your old enough to remember the eighties, Grosse Pointe Blank is an easy recommendation. Even if your not, it's still a funny film.
Grosse Pointe Blank has been on top of my Letterboxd favourites list forever! Which is to say, I think you should watch it.
A line from the movie Civil War that I think epitomizes how it knew how people would react was the mention of “The Antifa massacre”. It gives no mention if antifa was the attacker, the victim, or a falsely labeled attacker or victim. But the people next to me definitely had immediate reactions to hearing the word “antifa”. It was an amazing anti war movie that shows a lot of the audience’s inability to discuss war without trying to find a moral high ground on either side. That said, the marketing wasn’t super honest to the tone of the movie. If I’m not mistaken, the Title Card changed the color of the font to the politically neutral Green in later trailers when I think it mighta been red before. But I could be mistaken.
There's no movie for Gorilla Monsoon, but that wrestlers name always gives me a chuckle.
Did the box office numbers for the "Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's Dead" remake even get reported?
7:53 Variety reported a roughly $100 million marketing budget for Dune: Part Two. Which would already put the movie in the green.
I wonder what A24's breakeven requirements are. It's their best box office by far, but it's also a pretty huge budget for them (first-week gross was about half the production cost). I would guess that they make most of their money from the post-theater market.
Grosse Ploint Blank is an amazing movie. Definitely check it out.
I enjoyed your WWE/WWF Chart Dan.
Dan: "Godzilla Kong"
The letter x: "Am I a joke to you?"
From my research, the 'x' is silent. Or it has been in other titles, at least.
@@DanMurrellMovies interesting. I genuinely assumed it was meant to be "cross" as in "Godzilla cross Kong".
Thanks for the reply!
LOVE the Easter Egg chart!!!
I had to give you a thumbs up and comment for the wrestlers names alone. I can't imagine how difficult that must have been 👍🏽
Wrestling names!! I love it!!!👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿😁
Hi Dan! Thanks for all your work.
Are you planning to see Sasquatch Sunset? I really enjoyed it and found it rose above the general things I heard. Hope to hear your thoughts about it.
Great video!!!!!
I appreciate your wrestling chart, Dan.
What Dan forgot To Tell you Is 2002 Spiderman Is Back In Cinema Now With Spiderman 2 Out Next Week
As a massive wrestling fan that specialty chart sure was special
I appreciate the silly chart! They are fun!
