  • Members of the crow family can make lots of different calls, each with their own meaning. Here's a Clark's Nutcracker doing its classic raspy calls. I don't know what they mean, but they do sound cool.
As a fan of all crows and crow relatives I had wanted to see this species for a long time, and was very excited when I heard it calling. Ran to my car to fetch my camera, and when I returned it was still there, calling away.
Clark's Nutcrackers are found at high elevations in pine forests. This one was right outside the Canyon Lodge in Yellowstone National Park in July 2024. The elevation was around 7700 ft.
