Common Raven eating a squirrel
Nature can be nasty to witness. At Mammoth Hot Springs in Yellowstone National Park, this Common Raven was snacking on a freshly killed squirrel, most likely an Uinta Ground Squirrel. I don't know if it was killed by the raven itself, or if the raven stole another bird's kill. You can see the entrails of the squirrel at some points in the video.
This video was taken in July 2024.

Clark's Nutcracker doing mew calls
Просмотров 2214 дней назад
Members of the crow family can make lots of different calls, each with their own meaning. Here's a Clark's Nutcracker doing some interesting calls that sounds a bit like a cat mewing to me. As a fan of all crows and crow relatives I had wanted to see this species for a long time, and was very excited when I heard it calling. Ran to my car to fetch my camera, and when I returned it was still the...

Members of the crow family can make lots of different calls, each with their own meaning. Here's a Clark's Nutcracker doing its classic raspy calls. I don't know what they mean, but they do sound cool. As a fan of all crows and crow relatives I had wanted to see this species for a long time, and was very excited when I heard it calling. Ran to my car to fetch my camera, and when I returned it w...

American bison scratching itself against a wooden post - part 2
Просмотров 31014 дней назад
Sometimes a telephoto lens isn't the best lens for the occasion. In a pull-out parking area along the road in Yellowstone National Park in July 2024, we saw this bison scratching a hard-to-reach itch, using a wooden post. Unfortunately, it was so close to our car that at 150mm of focal length (the minimum my lens supports), I could only capture this very zoomed-in video. Didn't turn out too bad...

Black bear eating wildflowers in Yellowstone National Park
Просмотров 6614 дней назад
The first day we drove into Yellowstone National Park in early July 2024, we were lucky enough to witness a black bear munching on wildflowers not more than 40 feet from us. It seemed quite unconcerned with all the people gawking at it from the safety of their cars. I earlier identified this incorrectly as a grizzly bear, but the face and body shape match a black bear, and not a brown bear / gr...
Pronghorn family in Yellowstone National Park
Просмотров 12514 дней назад
Not long after driving into Lamar Valley in Yellowstone National Park, we were lucky enough to be greeted by several pronghorn, including this family of 2 adults and 3 kids. Pronghorn resemble deer but are taxonomically in a separate family. With their sharp colors and horns with forward-facing prongs, they are probably the most fashionable mammals in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem :) Video ...
Dickcissel male singing
Просмотров 30428 дней назад
I saw my first Dickcissel (strange name, I know) in Indiana in June 2024! My friends who were casually interested in nature but were not birders just yet were as excited as I was to see this beautiful individual singing. The distant hills made for a nice soft green background. #birds #birdphotography #birdwatching #birding #canon #nature #wildlife #birdsofinstagram #birds_of_instagram #birdlove...
California Thrasher singing
Просмотров 1,2 тыс.Месяц назад
Video taken Feb 2024. California Thrashers are relatives of the well-known Northern Mockingbird, and like Mockingbirds they too can mimic other bird species! They usually hang out in dense shrubbery, but occasionally hop on to an exposed perch like this one and sing their hearts out. They are found in a very restricted range - chaparral habitat in California and a little bit of Baja California....
Spotted Towhee singing in spring
Просмотров 118Месяц назад
This Spotted Towhee was singing his heart out. It was springtime and he was probably either looking for a mate or simply staking claim to some territory. I'm not too happy with the auto-focus in this handheld video, but I'm quite pleased with the audio part of it :) This video was taken in March 2024 in northern California. Early on in the video, you might hear a Nuttall's Woodpecker doing its ...
Downy Woodpecker looking for bugs in a tree

Video was taken March 2024 in northern California. This pretty little Downy Woodpecker was working a tree, looking for tasty bugs. She ended up catching a spider at some point, and making a meal out of it. #birds #birdphotography #birdwatching #birding #canon #nature #wildlife #birdsofinstagram #birds_of_instagram #birdlover #birdlovers #cornelllabofornithology #audubonsociety #california #cali...

Is the natural pattern on their feathers to disguise them as snakes? Could protect them from predators by scaring them

My ravens seem to croak when they're relaxing - sometimes at each other and sometimes when they're just alone chilling on my balcony.
