I have a big shot and I used to have trouble with the plates warping until I saw a video someone posted on how to keep that from happening. It REALLY works! She said to use a new plate on the bottom and when you put your paper with the die to be cut on, put it upside down so the cutting blades are facing up, then cut. The top plate will warp a little but when it starts humping a little I just flip it over. The bottom plate stays like new. When the top one needs to be replaced, which isn't very often because I've been using the same top plate (and bottom one) since I heard this which was over a year ago, that's when I will switch the bottom plate with a new one. and rotate. I wish I could remember the origin of the video with this idea. But it really works. Turning the die facing up instead of down against the bottom plate is the secret. And as much as I would like to try other cutting machines, I really can't afford to. So I'm glad this works for me.

Me too! After much thought, went with the Spellbinders and will wait for a great price on HSN since I just missed one, to get the Empress for when I do multiple projects.
I was disappointed with the machine that I have had for two years and considered getting another. The timing of this video was perfect for me. The evaluations Jennifer has done were insightful and well presented. I appreciated the mention of a sale price as well. I just ordered the Platinum 6 based upon her advice.

*** I do not use the thick traditional dies. However, I have heard folks use the thick dies with the platinum. I only use wafer thin. Sorry! For electric, I would recommend the Vagabond.

- There is a larger version available for the gemini and platinum machines. However, I prefer the sizes shown here. *** I misspoke - the Empress is available in a smaller size, but not larger.
- Some 3d embossing folders don't work with the Empress
- I have not used the new Stampin Up Machine. I started this product testing before it was out. However, I imagine it is a good machine. Similar to the Platinum.
- Sounds like the Empress won't ship everywhere. Sorry. As I stated, I wish there were options for them. For overseas, try the couture creations go power and emboss.

I recently needed to purchase the plates for the Empress. The person I reached in customer service at Anna Griffin said they were out of stock and wouldn't be back for several months. She took my name and phone number and promised to call when they were available. I really didn't think I would hear back from her, but two months later I got a call from her that they were in and I could place my order. Needless to day, I am impressed that she did follow through with a personal call to me. I'd say Anna Griffin's customer service is the best ever!
I would love to know how thick the cutting plates are for the Empress. It looks like they are 4mm (instead of Gemini's 3mm) but I'm hoping that they are 5mm for no warping. Thanks so very much!
I apprectiate your videos so much. Recently the Empress was on a great sale with free shipping and I decided to buy it as it becomes physically more difficult for me to use my manual machine. I'm looking forward to it's arrival and being able to continue to craft as it brings me joy. Thank you

Instead of tearing pages from the instruction book, I make a photocopy of the pages I need then laminate the copy, punch a hole in the corner, add a ring and keep the pages I want, next to each machine that it matches. This way I still have the original book which I file away in case I need to make another photocopy in the future.

I have both sizes of Gemini, and have put them away as I’m fed up with the plate warping. Have tried everything to minimise warping, but nothing works. Will never recommend them. Gemini should sell their plates much cheaper to justify investing in their machine. Have since invested in Sizzix Big Shot, and Big Shot Plus. Don’t have any problems with plate warping. Love them. The Empress does look interesting as one don’t have to ‘crank’ a handle. Thank you for sharing x
I agree! My big shot always works and after buying the Magic Mat …. I don’t know when I’ve replaced my plates. As soon as I can sell my Gemini I’m going for the larger Sizzix.

I recently purchased the Empress since due to carpal tunnel I can’t use a hand crank one. Your video has assured I made the right choice. I only wish I could use the Spellbinders Glimmer Foil with it.
I print the instruction pages then laminate - I hate cutting up the booklets. Just a suggestion.
There are only 2 sizes of the Empress. The larger plates fit the regular Empress only. The Empress Mini is just as impressive as the regular one. I have a Gemini, Gemini Hr., Empress and the Empress Mini. The 2 Empresses are my go-to die-cutters.

Thank you Jennifer I have the Empress machine and was having trouble stacking my plates with Altenew thicker embossing folders. Watching this video showed me I didn't have to use both A plates. I'm a beginner and using the instruction manual really had me concerned and confused. Thank you again so much. I'm disable and the electric machine is easier for me.

I just picked up a brand new Gemini Jr. for $50 at our local non-profit materials exchange! Sort of a thrift store for all things craft related.
I have the regular Empress and the mini with its cozy and carrying case - love them - I have a Cuddle bug that I keep around in case I need a manual machine
I have had a Cuttlebug from the beginning and I use it all the time. My plates are already worn out, but it seems the plates are hard to find and are more expensive. Any suggestions for a substitute plate for my Cuttlebug? I really don't want to get rid of it. That's my go to die cutting machine for everything except for dies that are bigger in size. Thanks
I was not crafting for a few years and OH MY GOODNESS I AM LOST! So much has changed!!! My cuttlebug is now a dinosaur, as am I! There were only thick BIGZ dies and Spellbinders back then. I am so confused with all these dies, plates, magnetic boards, and mats...lol. 🤯 This will help me so much! Thank you Jennifer!!! You are WONDERFUL in so many ways! 💗(Also, hope you will investigate the minis sometime. I only knew about the Sidekick by Tim Holtz. @@ladyj.crafty2016 I was able to order a cutting plate on Amazon for my cuttlebug. I believe they have the B plates also just make sure the dimensions are the same. I’ve also been told you can go to a home improvement store and they will cut the plates but again you need to make sure the measurements are exact.
@@ladyj.crafty2016 : Cuddlebug was bought out by Cricut. They dropped the manual machine and are focusing exclusively on the Cricut electronic cutter. There are some generic plates that you can buy from Scrapbook.com now that will fit the Cuddlebug. I also only used Cuddlebug for almost 10 to 15 years! I bought the Spellbinders raspberry Grande Caliber to fit some of the really wide cutting dies that make books from chipboard. When Cricut stopped making cuddle bug, thankfully my mom had a duplicate Sizzix big shot and she gave me her duplicate, but I had to start from scratch and buy all new plates. I would like to know if these Spellbinder 6 has the same wide base that the Grand Caliber did so that I could still use my book making dies.

I still have my cuttlebug and love how compact it is. I also have a Gemini and love that because I have weak wrists and get pain if I use it a lot.

I have a Cuttlebug too- a hand me down years ago from friend who was upgrading. Means I never had instructions for it.

I purchased the Empress over a year ago. I am happy that you validated my choice. You do so much more crafting than I do so it is good to know the machine performs well over time. Thanks so much for your honest assessment of products not to mention I love seeing the cards you create.
Good evening, I purchased the Gemini, mini Gemini and the Gemini Pro. I also have the Empress. I can tell you since I got the regular Gemini machine when it launched several years ago, it’s more powerful than the Empress. However, the plates for the Empress are more durable. I’ve replaced my regular Gemini plates 4 or 5 times, I lost count. The Empress, I’m still using my original plates. This video is very useful. The Gemini plates have been improved. They needed to because plates get expensive. Thank you for such a helpful and professional video. I’m very satisfied with ALL my machines. My hubby has banned me from buying any more. Lol lol but that doesn’t work. Happy crafting.

You can use any thin wafer dies.

I have both the genini and the empress. I prefer the empress over the Gemini. The sandwiches just seem to easier to remember for me. I do love the idea of tapeing the gemini plates together. I'll have to try that. Thanks for another great video.
You just made my day, thank you Jennifer. I have just purchased the Empress machine. In fact, I have just unboxed it and it is sitting on my table. I have had the Empress mini for a while now, and use it almost daily. It sits out on my desk and is sooo handy to have there. I bought the mini because it has a cutting plate of 4.25, and is larger than most mini machines. This makes it much more versatile. The plates have not warped at all. Because of how quiet this little machine is, I decided to buy the Empress. I sold my Gemini to help pay for the Empress. The Gemini plates warp terribly, and the machine is very noisy. I have purchased quite a few Anna Griffin items, and have had hardly any problems. The odd couple I have had, I can tell you that their customer service is EXCELLENT! Hope this helps some of you.
Ty Angela. I also thought the Gemini is too loud. I would love to get another machine and a lit of people here seem to have the Empress. I'm not big on Anna Griffin products, but I might just invest in this one. Thanks!😃
Hmmm ... I may need to rethink my next die cutting machine purchase, then. I was planning on getting the Gemini, but I don't want it if the plates warp and it's noisy. Thank you for sharing this info.

So much useful information! Have been considering a Platinum 6 for some time and you have just convinced me to place my order.
I live in the uk, and have seen the empress on qvc, the only issue is I carnt buy more plates as they don’t have them anymore, do you have any idea where I can buy more from, there isn’t much information on the empress anywhere on the internet for the uk, And I have to say your my favourite card maker on RUclips I watch you almost every day to get inspiration, so thank you for showing us all your ideas, im very grateful
Thank you for the reviews. For those of us outside the US we might not be able to access some of them, or if they are newer we have to wait until they manufacture them with the appropriate voltage/plugs so they can be used. Can’t wait for the video on the plates. I have some plates for my Bigshot that I think are too far gone and will be disposed of because I’m scared of them breaking on me and shattering as I’m using them. I have been using self healing mats with my Gemini Junior which breaks the rules but it’s no longer under warranty and it’s hard to get replacements quickly as they have to be ordered from the US, but it’s helped extend the life of my plates. Thanks again for the work you do and the information you provide. Much appreciated
Where are you located? I’m in Canada and they have 4 available on TSC (the shopping channel) with 9 easy pays but also Anna griffins website will ship to Canada (unfortunately I don’t know anywhere outside of Canada)
I have the Gemini but have been frustrated with plates and also wishing they would have longer plates to accommodate slimline...now i might be getting the empress (ugh impulse control is not my strong suit!). FYI to those in Canada TSC has 4 more in stock as of right now with 9 easy pays.
I hear that the self healing mats are a Godsend...

i was gifted it. i know some people love it, but some people don't have luck with it. it didn't hold up for me. but i cut ALOT.

I have the Gemini Junior and taped together my plates as recommended in your first video. The plate that is not sandwiched does warp. I haven’t embossed yet but now I realize that I’ll have to purchase another plate because my plates are taped together. Just something to keep in mind for someone who wants to buy this unit.

i mentioned i have extra plates for that... and they will evenutally be used for replacements.

Who pays for embossing folders?? I make my own embossing plates with my 3D printer!
Well, I guess those who don't have a 3D printer? LOL
I started making cards about 6 years ago after I retired. I bought a Sizzix Big Shot. It was wonderful at first but within a few months, I had to use shims to get even a basic cut. And I had to run it through several times. I bought another Big Shot, and the same thing happened. Then I bought a Spellbinder’s platinum in the larger size. I didn’t have to replace plates as often, and I didn’t have to add any shims over time to get basic cuts. I’m a Stampin Up hobby demonstrator, and I did buy their Stampin’ Up Cut and Emboss machine. It is so much like the Spellbinders that I’m assuming it’s made by the same company. I love it! I really enjoy your videos!
Thanks for this video. Very informative. I have the original Gemini (full size) and also found it has too many mats/ plates to deal with, so I use a clear bottom plate, a self healing mat, paper, die face down, clear cutting plate & it works really well.
I have all three of those machines in the large and medium sizes. I also have the mini in the Gemini and empress machines. I use all of them! I did buy the empress and Geminis through HSN. I do like the plates of the empress machine the best. I’ve used the spellbinders machine for years. I have machines upstairs and downstairs so it kind of depends where I am crafting as to what machine I use. Excellent video Jennifer as always.

Excellent tutorial & review. I own the Large Gemini and the Empress Mini and love both. I also own a Sizzix Big Shot electric for cutting steel rule thick dies and it works great too. Can’t use manual machines much anymore because of arthritis in my hands. Thanks for your valuable information.

I made my own self healing cutting mats after watching the SBC demos. I had picked up a 12x8 clear gridded mat about a year ago and just now cut it in half with a box cutter. It really works great and the clear mat is great because you can see through them just like cutting plates! I use a SB-P6
Hi Jennifer. I trust your expertise so I bought The Anna Griffin Die cutting machine, the large one. I haven't used it yet. My question is, where can I buy extra plates, just because I like to use both size of plates and have extras on hand. . I didn't even see the largest plates, so where did YOU BUY the extra plates, please? I'm hoping Anna Griffin's site but I didn't see any.

I'm not a fan of HSN
Annagriffin.com has plates. Search that site on empress plates. If you don't see what you want there the only other place that I know has Empress products is HSN
I'm glad to see your results. I have an Empress, and I love it.
As I keep the instructions but generally lose them I make basic graphic diagrams for each sandwich, print them on a clear sticky label and attach the label directly to the macchine that way the settings are easily visible where and when I need them. I have an 8 year old electric die cutter which I don't use often so having the settings on the machine is a great help.
This Empress in your video IS the largest one. It comes with the small plates and you have to buy the larger plates separately. Empress has a mini, but it's too narrow in my opinion. Gemini, on the other hand, just came out with Gemini Pro which can handle 12 inch width.
I have all three machines in your video and I love Empress the most. It's quieter and you can use the plate either way. The plates are better quality. You do have to press the "Run" button, if you have to find a con about this machine. It also has a handle that's handy. The gemini senses the plates and start running, however, the plates have to be full width, which I find very inconvenient.

Hi Lucia. I have the same problem with my Big Shot Plus. I bought a big one for my bigger dies, but you're right, my plates are beyond warped and it doesn't matter if I flip it or not. I might just invest in an Empress. The only thing I don't like is that I have to plug it in and also the run button like you said. Thanks for the info. 😃

Thanks for how you educate us about our crafting. My Gemini Jr. has the plates and paper stuck! I heard I could hold down the 3rd button f0r 10 seconds, and that worked. Once. Stuck again, and it doesn't work. What should I do? I don't know who to ask except my card-making idol! Thank you.

Thanks for this excellent review! I have an Empress and love her. Instead of getting the mini, I grabbed the mini plates and use in my regular size machine. Wow. So fast! The black magnetic mat is a newer version, and is more durable in my opinion! I do think the HSN option to purchase is so nice for some as they often offer extended payments.
Jennifer thank you so much for the time and effort you put into these videos. My hand machine broke after 12 years of use but had not ordered a replacement. Why.....so much info to review, which takes hours and hours. Since I totally trust your reviews I now have a new Spellbinders 6 on the way to me AND at the sale price!!! Thank you again. I have the same machine but when I run my sandwiches through it makes loud cracking sounds and I’m afraid I may not be doing it right. Is this normal? Is there something I’m doing wrong?
This cracking sounds are normal. Especially with large dies. One suggestion is to turn the die slightly so it doesn't go in straight.

I have the larger & mini Empress machines, located in different places in my craft room. They are far superior to previous electronic machines, I've owned. Anna Griffin actually recommends placing the dies face down on the magnetic plate, which is what I do, but it's all in preference. Great video!
What is the difference with the spellbinders platinum 6 and the spellbinders platinum PL-100
How do those machines work on fabric and felt, and can you use anyone's dies, metal or plastic?
They can cut fabric and felt. It doesn't matter what brand of steel/metal die you use. They will work.
Why is it that people like to have a manual AND an electric machine? I have an electric one and can't imagine why I would use a manual one as well. Opinions please?

We cannot take for granted that there is electricity at all times :) ... I enjoy the manual machine and have bought a Spellbinders Platinum 6 after watching Jennifer using hers in her video's. I think cranking the manual machine is fun as it is like I am crafting out something special from using the machine, also not to mention on energy saving 😉. I might purchase the Empress in the future as I do not own any electric machine yet but for now I am very happy to have the Sizzix Sidekicks and the Spellbinders Platinum 6!
I was at a retreat and we lost power for 16 hrs! No die cutting for me then! Who woulda thought?!
Thank you. This was helpful but I have a question that was not addressed. I’ve been using a Sizzix Bigkick for many years and I have lots of steel dies that are much thicker. Can those dies be used on any of these other machines?
I didn't mention - you are right. I knew i would forget something! I don't use the thicker dies. For that, you can use the vagabond. and you may be able to use the spellbinders platinum but I am not sure.

I love my Empress! I bought it on HSN over a year ago
I have both the Empress and the Spellbinders Platinum and I love them both! I've had my Empress for about 2 yrs now and the Platinum for about 6 yrs. I gotta tell you, even though I love my Empress, it's pretty awesome to hear you give it a thumbs up. Little FYI. There are only 2 sizes to the Empress. The mini and the size you show in the video. The larger plates are used for Anna's larger dies like her easel dies. I have both the large and the regular size cutting plates but I always seem to reach for the large plates. Great video. Very informative.
Thank you for all your information. One request, when you show the results of the embossing folders and the dry embossing, could you please show the result more slowly? I have to push my brightness most of the way up and slow it to 25% or 50% to see the embossing at all. The machines look very good, it is helpful that you share all your tips and experience.

Great video. The only issue i have with the Gemini and empress is you cant use your steel rule dies and that is an issue for me because I love my steel rule dies. And because of that, I choose the vagabon (sp?). It does it all and I love it for that. I have the Gemini too and it's a great machine but it excludes the ability to use my steel ruled dies sadly.

@@jennifermcguireink It would be awesome if a company would come out with an updated electric die cutter that is capable of utilizing steel rule dies. Maybe you should approach a company and pitch that? Youre big enough of a presence in the paper-crafting world to get some ears to listen.... and it would be awesome to see your name on a machine like that.
haha - i have no desire to have my name on a product. i am too sensitive to the negative. :) but look into the try the couture creations go power and emboss - it MAY take the big dies. the vagabond does

I still go for my little cuddlebug but have been very grateful to have the Gemini since I recently injured my shoulder and can’t really crank the cuddlebug right now. 🙄The Empress looks wonderful!

Taping the Gemini plates together works WONDERFULLY! I’ve been doing that for over a year with amazing results and my plates are still like new. Thanks for that tip and for this new video too.

they do have machines with different cords, i believe. but i would check the site.
I love my two platinums but I have a little complain about the cutting plates, the lettering “Spellbinders” that is printed in black on the cutting plates will transfer the black ink on your paper if you are using light colored paper.

I have had the empress since it was released and love it. I use a lot of Anna's dies which are very intricate and never had a problem.

I have both the P6 and the Platinum 8.5" larger one because I have steel rule dies. Since you posted this Spellbinder came out with a Universal plate and platform set. I bought for both machines. But I keep going back to the original. Spellbinder also was wonderful they sent me a used platform for the larger machine when mine warpped. It came warped ever so slightly and it just got worse. So I tried to order a new one but was told they don't sell replacements which is how I got into the Universals. The failed platform was an upper laminated side the one with the images for what sandwich to use. So far the new platform is holding up just fine. I'd like to see you address how to use the Universal sets. I really think however the original is my go back to all the time. I had a gemini I did not get along with. So I have a brand new Empress. I just took it out of the box today. So here I'm on looking at what people think of the Empress and how they use it. I'm looking forward to using it as so many have top reviews for it. Hi. Thanks for doing this. I have the vagabond 2. It’s not cutting as sharp as it has. So I’m looking for a new electronic machine. I want one that can cut larger dies. It looks like empress is my answer. It looks like it can cut 5x7 dies correct?
The plates are just a bit bigger than 5X7 so they should fit easily. Jana for Jennifer
When I’m pressured for time I ignore my Geminis that I have and go for my trusty, aged Sizzix. - no fuss about what plates to use and always predictable results
Have been totally unhappy with Gemini Jr. I ordered all new plates then hesitated to use them. I will try your sandwiches with fingers crossed. My poor Cuttlebug is almost worn out but do not plan to order another electric machine.
my gemini jr plates warp so badly that I am frustrated. I can barely push the plates through - and I've tried taping them together as you suggested, flipping, etc. I even tried the scrapbook.com magic mat - but that isn't helping!! I don't want to invest in another machine, but I'm thinking!! thanks so much for doing this.

I have all three machines except my Platinum is the large one. I have had it for a couple of years and can't say enough good things about it. It is heavy because of the steel insides. A real work horse. As a bonus it also works with the Heartfelt Creations molds (the reason I got it) and the Sizzix Bigz dies. I have never had a problem with the plates. The only thing I have had a problem with are the AG cut/emboss folders and that is why I got the Empress. Her dies are thicker so I use it for everything AG. I have not had it long but so far I am very pleased with it. The Gemini Jr. was my first machine and I have not used it since I got the Platinum. The plates were quick to warp and I just loved the Platinum. If you have no problem cranking it would be my recommendation. They also have extended length plates that come in handy.
