I tend to think of the sit atop kayak as an informal kayak. Fair weather swimsuits, and cut-offs vs, game faced enthusiasts in more challenging conditions, but increasingly seeing possibilities for those with mobility challenges, elderly, obese, handicapped etc.
I used to feel the same way, but have been really impressed with some sit on top designs lately. The ones that take some of their design cues from surf skis in particular are really impressive. Definitely some things to consider, but they're a great option for certain people!
