First look at a Wilderness Systems Targa 100
Beautifully done! 🤩
What size paddle do you use
We'd recommend something long like a 250cm.
I can't get comfortable in a sit inside. Any thoughts for SOTs?
There are some great options out there. The Wilderness Systems Tarpon is a good one to consider. It is quite similar to the Pungo in terms of outfitting and material. Another option would be the Eddyline Caribbean. It's got the same lightweight thermoformed construction as the Sky 10 featured in this video.
Great video!
Thanks for the feedback! Glad to hear you enjoyed it!
Good extra kayak for guests. Does anybody have the owner's manual in pdf? Thanks.
Good extra kayak, when we have guests. Does anybody have the owner's manual in pdf? Thanks.
Excellent non sensational summary

Looks like great secondary stability there. Beautiful boat
It's got astounding secondary stability! We were all very impressed with it.
Thank you
It has a Nice bag/pack to store and carry it in…but what about the seat?
The seat wraps around the filled pack for transport
Love the pungo in green
Cool for a evening or after work trip to the fishing hole but i wouldn't do a big trip with it
Exactly. Plenty of other more suitable options for big trips.
1 psi floor? So this is comparable to one those super cheapy intex or a pool toy .. What a let down
1 psi floor? So this is comparable to one those super cheapy intex or a pool toy .. What a let down
The materials are a bit tougher, but it's absolutely not a high performance craft. But for $450 CAD I think it's reasonable.
Our fave right now!!
It's a very impressive inflatable!
Is there value in adding an air/ buoyancy bag to a recreational kayak? So you could potentially/hopefully get back in on the water?
Certainly! It's worth bearing in mind that even with float bags a recreation kayak will take a lot of bailing to dry out, but then at least a self rescue might be possible.
This or one of the sea eagles?
I think for the price this is a hard o e to beat!
Thanks for the great video! I’ve been going back and forth with the Pungo 125 and the Loon 126. Do you happen to know how much faster the Pungo is vs the Loon? I think I’m leaning towards the loon but I keep reading the pungo is faster.
The Pungo is 10% faster, maybe. I wouldn't describe either as fast. I'd sit in both of you have a chance and base the decision on how they feel.
Thank you for the response, I’ve sat in a pungo and liked it but near me I can’t find a loon 126 to save my life lol.
Which model of Norse Kayaks is this please?
That's the Norse Eir! A fantastic and beginner friendly kayak!
Which model of Norse kayak is this please?
This session was with my Norse Embla
Does this come with a pressure gauge on the pump?
No gauge, so it does require a bit of guesswork.
Always choose the 12' over the 10' versions. A 10' kayak might seem big in the store, but feels very small in the water. And 12s paddle much better. And don't be shy about sit on top kayaks.
I'd always recommend the longest kayak that you can store and transport, up to about 18'. There are diminishing returns though. A 12' is much nicer than a 10', whereas a 14' is nicer than a 12, but not by as much.
Hey! do you have any opinions on the current designs Solara 100? Just getting into kayaking and I’m looking for a kayak to use mostly on sheltered lakes.
I don't have specific experience with that model, but have had quite a few headaches from Current Designs polyethylene boats. They suffered from questionable outfitting and poor quality control, at least towards the end of their run. That was mostly in their longer Sea Kayaks, so perhaps the outfitting on the Solara 100 may be better.
Very helpful. Thanks for breaking down some of the basic features/considerations for a noob like me. Cheers!
Happy to help!
Ever see a composite in iv or v whitewater?
There's a few folks running whitewater in composite boats, but for most folks the durability of plastic makes a lot more sense.
Yes
When I posted the question it was not quite complete, it should have went like this. Other than the "elitists, or those in maximum effort, subsidized competition" is anyone within the normal 99.99999% of the people running class iv, v, or vi, running composites, and I'm sure that answer would be......no.
It took me 40 years to drop the coin for a new yak. I couldn’t find the perfect yak for me. They all perform and handle so differently. I bought and sold many used yaks over the decades in all the different construction materials. I bought my first new yak 14 months ago and couldn’t be happier. At $6000.00 it was the perfect yak for me ! The P&H Volan 160 in Carbon & Kevlar at 42 lbs. love it !
Oh I'd love to get some seat time in a Volan! That's a sweet kayak!
I recommend the stellar and eddyline boats, I have a eddyline rio that i would keep but selling due to i want to stick to sprint kayaking until i am old and get into something relaxed as sea kayak for cruising.
They're great boats. The Stellar kayaks are especially nice, keeping some of the features of fast kayaks in relatively stable sea kayaks. I've got an S18 Expedition and it's a dream.
@@PascalWCK yea i have a 18r i paddle for relaxing, I paddle a nelo sprint kayak .
That Stellar looks stellar ....
It's always a Stellar day when you're paddling one.
Why are they so wide
Width is a relative thing. It definitely changes the characteristics of a kayak. Wider is generally going to be more stable, but somewhat slower.
You are a 😂😂😂
I agree 100%
Good choices for beginners. I would add that if you live near big water (Great Lakes and Niagara River for me), beginners soon find that a 10 foot boat without floatation is not what you want. Many of our new paddlers soon upgrade to a 12 foot or longer with sealed flotation front and back to enjoy group outings on bigger water. I recommend the latter as a beginner boat.
Absolutely! There are limitations of any recreational kayak. If someone has aspirations of exploring far from shore, or doing multi-day trips, I'd be inclined to recommend a stable day touring kayak.
Thanks, good choices. I would also add to your list, Eddyline Skylark and Rio, Delta 12AR and 12S, Feelfree Aventura (11.0 and 12.5), Stellar S12, Dagger Stratos 12.5, and Jackson Tupelo (12 and 12.5). Many of your choices (and these others) have slight to moderate increases in cockpit size to make it easy to enter/exit, and also touring kayak features (bulkheads, sealed hatches, deck lines and bungees) and performance (more streamlined shape, ability to edge, etc). Look forward to more of your videos!
All great selections with a variety of pros and cons to consider!
Nice, enjoyed this. Very informative.
Hi Joe! Glad you liked it!
This is really uinteresting and coo......... what is going on with your weird arms?
🦖🦖🦖
Are you going to have these boats in stock in 2024 so people can sit in them? Because every time I check your out of stock.
You bet! I think we've got a container of Norse inbound at the moment!
I tend to think of the sit atop kayak as an informal kayak. Fair weather swimsuits, and cut-offs vs, game faced enthusiasts in more challenging conditions, but increasingly seeing possibilities for those with mobility challenges, elderly, obese, handicapped etc.
I used to feel the same way, but have been really impressed with some sit on top designs lately. The ones that take some of their design cues from surf skis in particular are really impressive. Definitely some things to consider, but they're a great option for certain people!
Nocqua battery easy peaze.
Great info! And an amazing selection at the store!
Excited for this next season !
Thanks for this! If you were headed out on a long, multi week expedition, what repair or maintenance items would you bring with you for your drysuit?
Great question! I'd probably bring some goretex patches, a small tube of aquaseal, and a stick of zipper lubricant. Gorilla tape can also be used for temporary repairs, for example improvising a short term gasket patch.
Thanks, nice summary and information. You used Delta to show the flex in a thermoformed product, but I can tell you first hand that the Carbonlite 2000 material that Eddyline uses is considerably more stiff than the Deltas are (I own both brands). I do hope the composites get more affordable, but right now they may not be within budget for most (and neither are the thermoformed kayaks for that matter). And, there is also availability, many of us have to travel several states away to even test paddle one of these because there aren’t a large number of composite manufacturers in North America. Nice summary though, hope others can chime in here. I watched your video because I have very little experience with the composite boats.
I would agree, Eddyline does seem a bit stiffer. I think that's a combination of material stiffness and geometry of the deck. Eddylines have some nice lines on the deck that add extra rigidity. While in the past I would agree with the assessment that thermoformed is a bit of a premium material, nowadays a Delta 14 is actually LESS expensive than a rotomolded boat of a similar category, for example the Wilderness Systems Tsunami 140, at least in Canada. While I agree that composite kayaks are quite pricy, there are some attractive options that are relatively affordable. The Norse kayaks for instance are a great option for those who can afford a bit more of an upfront cost for a kayak that's going to last a lifetime of use. While more expensive than a Delta, many are actually less expensive than a similar Eddyline. All things to consider!
Thanks for the great tips for winter paddling. Looking forward to get out pretty soon.
Glad you found it useful! Have fun and safe paddling!

I like the music you put onto this ad
I would argue that many folks who own Rec kayaks have never tried a touring kayak, and after their first test paddle of one, they will likely never go back - for serious paddlers, Rec. boats are supposed to be a starting point, not an end, especially if they have some basic instruction and are properly fitted. That’s been my experience - the extra glide and better tracking gets people addicted. Once folks feel the difference in a touring boat, it will persuade many paddlers to find the room and the extra money for a longer, faster and safer boat. I am glad to see that there are some more kayak models available now, that are sort of hybrids, with characteristics of both, in hopes that some will upgrade to touring boats eventually.
As an avid touring kayak paddler, I agree 100%! A recreational kayak simply cannot compete with the glide, efficiency, and overall performance of a touring kayak. However, recreational kayaks do have a feeling of stability and comfort that makes them very appropriate some a beginner paddler just testing the waters.
It looks nice but no any reference in dimensions...
