Ya know I've been looking up tutorials on random bits today while working....and every time i came across a video with your face and intro....i knew i wasn't gonna have to look up another to solve my problem....appreciate these
Simple. Go to your outliner. Above your collection you have a small menu that shows : Scenes/ layers/sequence and blender file. You need to scroll down the outliner after selecting blender file(to be displayed) You will see an icon shaped as a paper with an arrow. Its your external file. Right click and reload it. It isn't as intuitive for me as maya referencing files and importing from reference. But I'm learning blender and trying to shift my entire workflow to it. Thanks you for pointing the difference with link and append. I tend to link my files then appending and sometimes it plays some tricks to me as i want to edit those. And it isnt the same as maya.
Weird, that is not working for me in 2.83. All I did was change the node material colour on the original linked file and hit save...the Reload on the new linked version does nothing.
@@Puckerization that's weird, maybe you should send a ticket to blender support with your file (if you want them to pinpoint the error). I am using blender 2.82 and 2.83. Also E-cycles 2.83 for gpu rendering. And i haven't encountered the issue. Does saves and opening the project again helps, not the best solutions. Also sometimes blender keeps some files in GPU cache so when i don't activate rendering in viewport, the materials is displayed as the previous color but it self-correct itself during render.
@@Absolutevtuber it's working now..I saved the test file and reloaded it and now it seems to work with the linked file when I make changes...must have been a glitch. I also started from scratch and tested it using 2.83 and 2.90a together...vice versa and also just using 2.90a ...all working. Thanks for the input.
A better way to edit linked files: Activate; Add-ons > Object: Edit Linked Library. Now you'll have an extra option under the Item Tab to edit and autosave Linked Files
two videos in one day you have solved issues I have had with Blender! I couldn't figure out how to get Append to work. used collection and picked the correct one and BAMN. it worked. yay!
Was searching for how to open blend files earlier today for a project. I just ended up going with a fbx or obj file. Thanks for this video!! Keep up the quality content.
A clear and concise tutorial that's answered many of my newbie questions. Thanks for uploading. (PS. Have also found many of your other videos most helpful too.)
Glad I found your channel. I subbed for sure. Your content is always straight to the point and clear. I'm struggling with Blender cause I have 25+ years of contamination with Autocad, Solidworks, Inventor, Pro-Engineer and some Catia and this way of doing 3D is sooooooooooooooooo different, it would be easier if I would've never touched solid modeling but hey this is new and I like it so far despite the constant comparison to solid modeling in my brain. Keep up the good work.
Yeah - I came from SketchUp and Fusion 360 - Blender is definitely a different style of program optimized for a different kind of model. I think it's possible to learn both, but it takes a bit of a mental shift for sure
Thank you for taking the time to make and share this video, I found it fascinating and now know the difference between append and link thanks to your easy to follow explanations. Much appreciated.
Hey! I know a thing! It's that when you APPEND the file it also adds to the file size of the blend file. If you LINK the file/object you aren't adding it to your blend file which, although you can't edit it, it should keep your current blend file size lower.
@@TheCGEssentials I'm coming from lightwave. You build in modeler and send it to Layout for animation and rendering. Blender is all one program. So your tutorial helps explain how I can build my assets and then bring them into a scene for animation.
ohh i hadn't thought that it is also possible to append whole collections before I watched the vid. fortunately you opened my mind and prevented me from importing everything one by one XDD
3:07 is he doing "selection to cursor" or "selection to cursor"? I actually forgot because of my Alzheimer's selection to cursor (English, sorry for my bad hi)
I'm still relatively new to Blender, but I'm loving it. However, one of my biggest gripes is having to look up a whole step-by-step tutorial on something that can be done with a simple click.
At first I really disliked Blender, I think its learning curve is very steep, but who cares about what I think? Lets get to it: I think your tutorials are great, they are very helpful to me. So thanks a lot!
For some reason, when I go to append and click on the model I want to have in my scene, it doesn't have "collection" like yours did. Any thoughts or is it something with the model I'm trying to append?
There is a save and reload option somewhere down in file menu. I use it to update textures when i change them in substance. Edit: i think they added it in the new lts
Maybe use the Revert option. You could save where you are then right away hit Revert as it would reference the saved geometry - still a pain on big or master scenes though
Unfortunately, there are a lot of blend files to download that don't include a Collection.. I don't quite get how to get this combination of Object, Material and Textures imported correctly. Tried first appending the textures, then materials, and finally the Object desired. This didn't work.
Though it is not direct refresh, I found an alternative for the process of closing and opening the file to update the linked data. You don't need to close the file. Just goto "file" > "open recents" and then offcourse the current file will be at the top, just click it. Blender won't open it in another window. It reopens in the same window simulating the refresh. It is better than closing and than opening agnin.
I've been using blender for about a month now, i've starting appending characters into maps just to get the hang of things, but every time i set the character into a pose if i switch to edit mode it puts them back into the middle, into there default position. Or if i save it and reopen it, it does the same thing. Anyone know why this is happening would love some help thanks.
Thanks for the great tips. I thought Blender would be similar to 3Dmax for Linking other Blender files but it was totally different after I tried it. Thanks again.
I have a question. When i wanna import my file it does not show up on the files when you go into append. My file was put inside winwar (hopefully you understand what im saying)
@@TheCGEssentials Thanks for the quick reply! Yes I did, and it opened but the textures that came with the file didn't open. Also the animation didnt play, it was static.
İ just discovered if you hit ctrl+c while the items are selected, and then open the file that you want the items to be transeferd to and then hit ctrl+v. Basically a copy paste function does it well.
Hi everyone! Let me know if you have any questions OR if you know how to update the linked items without restarting Blender in the comments below!

You can update the scene after linking by clicking 'File->Revert', which reloads the saved file.

thank you very much
I owe you a favor
but how to unlink them, did I just delete the collection ?
coz it seems it's not realtime.

it ain't updated at the other scene
Super clear! You don't know how much I needed this

There is, at least in 2.93.5: File > Append (under Link).
