This is experimental, poetic, interesting and harmonic. Do not fail to see the value in this kind of music..its the exact opposite of the "music blockbuster formula" that builds the pop industry. This is art, the kind of art that moves us foward.
Dear internet, WHY THE HELL DOES IT MATTER. Break labels. Enjoy it. These guys are inspirational. They have power. They don't need to follow a defined template to be anything. They build the sound they want, and as for us? We are intended to love and enjoy it as we may. Not fucking pick it apart and worry about giving it a fucking label. Everyone, chill. Don't like it? Move on. Have a great night everyone
My friend introduced me to them a few years ago. They're amazing! I wish people could see past the fact that it's different than what they usually hear. His lyrics are crazy good.
if this doesn't make you smile because everything is absolutely perfect, you're not human. from the setting. to the guitar. to the lyrics and the passion behind them. how they both just had so much energy for that song. purely beautiful it was.
This video is hilarious to me. He starts off thanking the old woman for letting them visit, then tells her they're gonna play a nice song for her birthday, then wishes her a happy birthday with a smile. Very nice, very calm. Then he bursts these lyrics out from the depths of his lungs lmao
This guy is a change in music all in all . It's a brute sound that still lifts my soul like a kind melody shouted to bring me back to life . I've got to play a show with this dude .
Our heart burns broken at the ends, they fail us, keep building my lungs are wax inside my ribs, you're burning, well I'm breathing this back breaks walked on from carrying friends, can't stop now, still working your life's like rain drops on my tongue, I believe you, keep raining and it's alright, it's alright, we are not right now complete and I'm alright, you're gonna be alright, we might never be complete but the water keeps rising, it's rising, everybody get into the water and hold each others hands and lives, let's all push our hearts together…. we're gonna leave these shores right now, be everything we've never been but you gotta swear to promise that we'll never go back again, ever again and we're not just islands lying beside each others shorelines we're all bound with veins and hopes, we are not each others ghosts our hearts are abridged, let's build bridges to each other so this river won't take us under filled with monsters and goblins, they keep dragging the bottom our life is a bridge, let's build bridges to each other and pray we don't go under, oh these careless waters I'm trying not to confuse: being used, with giving all I am by: being used, and giving everything I have, all I am so I'll build a bridge with hollow bones filled with hollow teeth inside a hollow heart, with the insides carved and let the blood in these veins freeze let the water in these veins freeze and break and flood the dam we are all we have, this is all we need, hold on it may never end and I might have to drink my teeth again if I wash up on the coast so I'll build a bridge with all that's left, & not make any more new ghosts show me your life, wide and bright, I hope that patience fills the seams keep what's inside, dry and right, you arch the frame I'll span the beams our lives are a bridge for us to give, I want to build a better bridge from every wrong we've done to each other, if I forgive will you forgive? cause one day we're gonna close our eyes for death or rest and abandon ourself, this weak mind and breath and the columns we made, and roots we grew down deep will be pulled and gathered in to firewood, and burnt for heat but when the tension shifts, and these braces turn I'll try and build a better bridge and when all our piers burn, and the hinges miss I'm gonna build a better bridge our hearts are abridged, let's build bridges to each other so we don't take ourselves under
If you actually count it out you will find that the vocals are not off beat or out of time with the guitar. Plus look at his feet, he is clearly going along with the guitar
I love Listener and think he is very unique. That being said, he's definitely an acquired taste. His music is not for everyone. I think he is very poetic and his delivery is always a surprise even after a few listens. What makes it even more surprising is if you've ever heard him rap with Deepspace 5, you know he has more than adequate skill to go that direction. I commend him for daring to do something different.
Music is not simply rhythm, harmony, or sound. Music is anything that can invoke any given emotion in the human heart. Whether it be the chirping of birds, the ivory keys of a piano, or words that simply pour one's soul out into the world. Music is what we feel, and just as much as love, cannot be defined.
They've gone and done it, again. They've made me choke on my complete happiness, total joy, bottomless heartache, incomparable and incomprehensible feeling.
There is rhythm, there is melody, there is harmony and color. The harmony is between the soft of the guitar and the harsh of his voice, the melody is from the guitar and the trumpet, the rhythm carried by both of them together. It sounds to me as if your ideas of music are so constrained and confined to this small box that the only music to you has the same C, G, Am, F chord progression in every pop song.
Its poetic music people, if you don't listen to the meaning of what their saying than of course your not gonna like it cuz all you hear is people talking, but listen to the actual poetry of the song! im sure you'll love it then
This is incredibly unique... His sort of southern states accent makes it what it is really... The lyrics are great and the guitar is great... I find that the brass overpowers everything else in the mix a bit but I can forgive that... Just the oddball style of the music is enough to keep me listening.
+Amy Swallow I didn't like Listener the first time I heard them, but I found one song I really loved and then I suddenly loved all of the songs, they really grow on you.
originals, not off beat, you know its great when im stuck in a car for more than an hour and I change the station 20 times a minute, almost literally, shit anything new is good to me, contribute!!!!! prevail!!!!!
I don't see why people can't like pop music, risecore music, and music like this... sometimes all you want it some dance beats and catchy choruses, sometimes you want something more complex and meaningful, music that makes you think, sometimes you want feel good happy music or wild and hyper music without really caring about the lyricism or composition. And sometimes you want interesting, unique, strange, amazing, passionate music with amazing artistry, like listener provides :) don't judge, itsallgood
you should take influence from all music. that is being truly open minded. just because you dislike something doesn't mean its trash. everyone has something to say and if this is his form of saying it then why be critical of it? hes just doing something hes passionate about. i couldn't ask more of anyone.
I love how he totally mixes up with the music in his body. i mean when the first tone is played he acting like being controlled by the music and he cant even do anything agaisnt it, like a disease or addiction. But a good one. I love this
yes, people do think this is good, my negative friend. I appreciate all art forms and this man's expression has helped mold me as an artist more than I can even find words to thank him for.
Holy shit, whoever suggested these guys go on tour with mewithoutyou and the Chariot, goddamn are you on to something. I would probably sell my family to see that show.
Correction: Music never used vocals much associated with instruments till about the 1800's. Music was and is about expressing emotion and stories through melodies.
Came here because a friend made this guy out to be some sort of poetic genius, all I got was a guy that sucks at trumpet and a guy who figured out how to play a couple chords on his dad's guitar.
"I guess you can't lose em all"
That optimism is so beautiful.
Used to love this song so glad I found it again
I really like his style. Its like he's forcing it out of him like his mouth is in conflict with the rest of him...verbal turrets yo
I used to love this song. I still do, but I used to, too
It's hard to call it a song
@@bobbysalkeld2634 I think he is just having a seizure
Used to hate this song so sorry I found it again
This is experimental, poetic, interesting and harmonic. Do not fail to see the value in this kind of music..its the exact opposite of the "music blockbuster formula" that builds the pop industry. This is art, the kind of art that moves us foward.
real talk

i love this song, but that The Chariot hoodie always makes me that much more happy.
fizzgigify He featured in Chariot's David De La Hoz
@@NathanNathanNathanNathanNathan I think some of his best stuff is in that chariot song
Holy fuck. I remember when this video was stuck on like 1,500 views. Good job guys.
It may not be music to you, and that is fine. It's music to who wants it to be.
No it's just plain not music lol
landon cube He wasn't personifying music. He was talking about the listeners of music.
This is so unique it's like being as an ocean and Johnny and the freight trains making a music baby
no. it's like listener, making music.
Cookie Monsta no it's like you calming down
Justin Thomas no. still pretty sure it's like listener, making music.
Cookie Monsta obviously ... Your comment is so factual calm down
Justin Thomas ~finally calms down and walks away~
he must have the lungs of a swimmer, I find it hard to sing along with him, let alone play a trumpet in between lines!
It's not singing tho lol
landon cube he's saying words in a rythmic fashion, what would you call it?
cainan simons smart alecks, smart alecks everywhere.
cainan simons listen to the produced version of "seat belt hands" they're a full on band, it's not jusy spoken word. He sings too.
cainan simons
have you heard the song?
this song makes me happy on so many levels! I love that there is brass, & his passion is ugh AMAZING!!
My friend introduced me to them a few years ago. They're amazing! I wish people could see past the fact that it's different than what they usually hear. His lyrics are crazy good.

This is awful. I love it.
Best comment ever typedddown
What they said.
I thought exactly the same, with the same words.
Scroll down searching this comment and is the first one.
I laughed so hard at this. Thank you.
This video is hilarious to me. He starts off thanking the old woman for letting them visit, then tells her they're gonna play a nice song for her birthday, then wishes her a happy birthday with a smile. Very nice, very calm.
Then he bursts these lyrics out from the depths of his lungs lmao
This passion gives me goosebumps. Wonderful song
The guitar and trumpet really turns it into music.
Cloud25XD Instruments are very useful when making music.
his moustache has a huge personality
This song saved my life I know that the band won't see this post but thank you.
iv'e found that Listener is more of a spoken word artist he just happens to also have wonderful music to go with his amazing linguistic talents.

Some guy did this at an open mic at my university. He used a harmonica for the trumpet bit. Good shit.

I always come back here
They've gone and done it, again. They've made me choke on my complete happiness, total joy, bottomless heartache, incomparable and incomprehensible feeling.
i relate so god damn well to dan smith, thank you for your creative genius.
It's more art than music in my opinion. The more I listen to it, the more I can appreciate the originality.

Everything Listener does touches so deeply it both hurts and heals.

this gives me chills and goosebumps. very poetic and original i like it
I am a music major..and I love everything about this... especially his voice..
Ha, I love the end
"J'ai rien compris" Awwwwww! What a precious grandma!!!

on a serious note, this band is amazing. ive loved them for around 8 months now, but i wish id found them even sooner.
Art is what something that evokes an emotion in me, and this evokes an emotion.
I like it. That ending though was so cute omg
i seriously have no idea what to think of this, whether to love or hate it. i guess he really did his job as an artist
Yeah I'm lost
+Amy Swallow I didn't like Listener the first time I heard them, but I found one song I really loved and then I suddenly loved all of the songs, they really grow on you.
Cletus Hughlett Good job, Cletus.
Spoken word. Art
Okay, you know what, you guys win. This is music. There.

Took the words out of my mouth. Maybe La Dispute Balance and composure and mewithoutyou tour with listner!
Beautiful chaos. Bonifide Tea music.
they played with the chariot and tons of other amazing bands at Vanna's DVD shoot. Fantastic evening.

Does anyone know what notes he's using for the trumpet??
No way. mewithoutYou is (and has for a long time been) my favorite band. They're just very similar.
God bless you, Dan.
I really can't decide whether I like these or not. But his head movements when singing are hilarious.
this is amazing.
Dan makes me want to be a better person every time I listen to him.
He flails his head awkwardly but you can tell he's passionate.

Dr disrespect's early music is awesome glad i found this!
Jokes really love these guys!
that is one of the best responses to that post
Correction: Music never used vocals much associated with instruments till about the 1800's. Music was and is about expressing emotion and stories through melodies.
Well I'm definitely interested in them now.
Lets build bridges to each other so we don't take ourselves under ❤
Every musician should have tourettes so they can portray at least 10% of the passion Dan does.
this band is like a mix between johnny hobo and mewithoutyou. they are very sincere, its great music
*generic diatribe about music elitism, how your music sucks, mine is awesome etc etc* I love this. The end
TRES BIEN. מקורי. מעולה. ביזארי
You are very small minded, and rather than insult you I'd wish you could listen to this and see the beauty in it.
I cant get enough people hear music like this but do they listen to the meaning and fucking awsome trumpet
Came here because a friend made this guy out to be some sort of poetic genius, all I got was a guy that sucks at trumpet and a guy who figured out how to play a couple chords on his dad's guitar.
