    These are exactly the points that made me buy the base M1 too. People stress too much over 8gigs of ram or the storage space, they don't stop to think that very very few people are actually going to need the extra specs and they're likely not one of those people. On top of that you can just sell this in a year or two and get the M2 or M3 model, while selling the old one for good value. Even that will end up costing you less and getting you more in the long run than paying twice the price now just for some extra ram and storage space.

    Brilliant advice! I was pretty much decided on the M1 base model as I am utilising my (limited) company allowance for technology and don’t want to have to pay a fortune out of my own pocket on top (read as can’t afford to...) but was stuck on the 7 vs 8 gpu part.... after watching countless reviews all day this one has given me the confidence to just stick with the cheapest base model and can afford the little extra I need to pay towards it! Thank you!

    Great video. Just would like to mention is that the M1 8gpu core and 512GB is €1399
    If you upgrade the M1 7gpu 256GB to 512GB it’s €1359.
    So if you need 512GB it’s better to get the 8GPU M1 for about 40€ extra you get the 1GPU.

    i think most buyers think i should get a bigger hdd or more ram just in case.. just like how some ppl get persuaded by sales person to top up to buy it to the Extended Service warranty..
    but really 80% or so never really use them.. majority of ppl who add hundreds of dollars for 512gb storage or 16gb ram.. never actually exceed 256gb of the earlier model.. and store their storage on external or cloud.
    Frankly for the price of the extra 256gb.. you can subscribe to iCloud and get more storage and keep your files there..its probably easier to share your files and also less likely to lose.

    Car analogy is a bit off. Because if you buy “packages” from the manufacturer, then you do get more money for your car. Just flipped a 300c to Carvana and hit thousands more because of upgraded engine, sport package, sun roof and stereo. Since I bought the car used, got almost the same I paid for it and used it for 4 years.

    Parallels runs okay on the 8GB MBA when running Windows. But the 16GB version would be the choice for better performance.

      On an Intel chipset sure. But not the M1

    • @markholle3450
      @markholle3450 2 года назад +1

      @@nordicpride9708 Even on the M1. I continue to have RAM issues on my M1 MBA since Windows takes up to 6GB alone. Swap memory can only do so much. If you run some demanding programs using virtualization, you will want the 16GB.

      So getting a MBA with 8gb ram wouldn’t be enough for a CS student?

    • @markholle3450
      @markholle3450 2 года назад +2

      @@spicyshizz2850 I would venture to say that 8GB would be okay for most of your CS use cases. But if you think you will be setting up a virtual workstation, the 16GB version is $200 well spent. It's not like Windows (via Parallels) runs poorly on the 8GB MBA - In fact, it runs great 90-95% of the time. It's those 5-10% moments that you will regret going with the base model.

      I am so glad I have found your comment on the MBA m1 and running into RAM issues? All of the videos talk about how the new cores are so efficient and that RAM does not matter much anymore? But are they forgetting about software such as Parallels and many others that RAM intensive? I am a graduate student and run high end statistical analysis and I always run into RAM issues and need to go to my IMac with 32gb?

    I have learned through the years passed; you get what u need. I have a win11 i7, 16gigs ram with 512g m2 NVMe laptop but prefer to use base Macbook Air. It’s all about hw+sw compability and battery consumption also better than windows intel based machines.

    Yeah, I have been thinking about it and I decided to go with the base model too. If I wanted to future proof my mac, I would definitely get 512gb storage and 16gb of ram. But where I live this means 55% price increase. Let's say 50%.
    Now there is an argument for using your macs for 7 years. It is something I have done. I had future proofed my mac by buying 256gb storage and 8gb of ram in 2013.
    But it doesn't make sense to do this IMHO for 55% price increase. Right now 8gb will be enough for me. In 2 years it probably won't be. But then I should sell mine and get a new one. I think I can sell the base model for the 45% value in 2 years. That way I will get a brand new machine. And in 2 years 16gb will probably be the base memory. I am pretty sure we are towards the end of 8gb era. Though I am not sure about 512gb becoming the base. I don't expect this to happen. And by then we will probably get 3rd genration of M chips. I can't wait to see them.

    I can agree with why 8Gb would be enough for most but not the storage, 256GB is not enough in long term usage. You can store the photos and documents on cloud/external drive. But you cannot do the same with the OS or the apps you have on your Mac, with every year of update I see the system volume on storage creeping up and I can surely tell that 256gb won't be enough

    So while having opened two tabs with 256 and 512 gig Airs for my gal, and another tab with the external Samsung T5 1TB, I checked RUclips and watched this. Funny to see your video with the exact same thinking I have. Paying 200USD for 256gig storage upgrade is just ridiculous; speaking as a PC user. Especially since the 1TB is like 100 bucks and the speeds are more than enough. Thanks for affirmation! :D Imma take the base model as a gift. Price to performance is trully the best, for someone who uses it for office applications and internet browsing.
