I bought a new motorcycle in spring this year. I had to decide buying the model of last year they had in stock or wait for the new model to appear. Already back then the dealership was increasing the prices because of increased transportation costs. I decided to go for the old model in stock with a small discount. Going back for maintenance I talked to the dealership and they told me the new models were expected in may but the first shipment to be delivered to them wont' be before august and even that was in doubt. People will notice the effects on many levels. There is not only the stress on the supply chains but there are also shortages with chip manufacturers. I think I made the right decision and hope I won't need to make another big purchase anytime soon because inflation and backlogs are going through the roof.
Thank you for your interesting and educations videos. I have learned a lot that formerly caused me to ask WHY far too frequently. Fascinating content. Your calm voice makes learning inevitable.
I am getting into repairing more and more stuff for people. Repair is coming back. Alternators and starters for cars are so expensive now repair is viable again. Childrens toys, electric fires, and electric fencer units are all coming through my shop. Lawn tractor parts. They have priced themselves out of the market. This is very good for the environment stopping the profligate waste of materials making products over and over again due to the lack of repair. Make products with repairability in mind.
.... couldn't agree more, so busy, unfortunately, half the ppl expect to pay me like a cheap meth whore . . . i just tell 'em i'm an expensive meth whore!
My customers are focusing on product $/CT. We are immediately adding value {more expensive} product to our product line. You can't ship 25K of wholesale product in a 23K container. I think this will mean inflation on a geometric scale.
At some point there is a cross over between shipping costs across ocean versus local production of some products. Low value goods like underwear (made with American grown cotton) will shift production to countries like Mexico, Central America or Haiti. Alternately, Americans can just stop buying as much stuff. Consumers are doing this to themselves; a bit of self control will go a long way. Every other month it seems PRC throws a US or European company under the bus (akaTesla, Boeing, Cisco, etc.) so American public, pay attention to where your products are made. Buy less junk! PS: If you’re willing to boycott vaccines, boycott China furniture, tube socks, even this years iPhone if you can! Even a 1-2% decrease in goods will be as effective as spending billions on expanding ports, dredging ports deeper, double tracking or reworking tunnels, etc.
Am I the only one a) fascinated by this channel, even though I do not even work in anything even close to shipping and b) fascinated by the amount of people that subscribe to this channel
Hey Sal -- Great channel. I never thought international shipping would be something that interested me, but I haven't missed an episode since Ever Given got stuck in the Suez. One question. Given how much you report on the Jones Act, I was wondering if you had any thoughts about the OMSA Jones Act Enforcer vessel -- what it is, how it will do its job, and why OMSA is sending out a physical ship instead of just detecting Jones Act violations automatically with vessel tracking data and fining the violators.
Thank you for covering this. I am a one man business that imports about 20-30 containers per month of used truck TYRES for retreading. I CANT BELIEVE THIS HASNT BEEN THE FRONT PAGE OF EVERY PROGRAM EVERY DAY! My freight has increased from $3045 to over $25000 to Chicago AND I ARILL CAN ONLY GET ONE OR TWOMLOADS PER MONTH!! America has no idea how huge the consequences of this are going to be and soon (it’s already started but the consequences are about to be massive).
Further reading on China trade: “WASHINGTON, Aug 2 (Reuters) - China's government quietly issued new procurement guidelines in May that require up to 100% local content on hundreds of items including X-ray machines and magnetic resonance imaging equipment, erecting fresh barriers for foreign suppliers, three U.S.-based sources told Reuters. Document 551 was issued on May 14 by the Chinese Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), with the title, "Auditing guidelines for government procurement of imported products," said one former U.S. government official, who obtained a copy of the previously unreported 70-page catalog and read portions to Reuters, but requested anonymity.”
The US box story retailers are not going to receive their Chinese made toys for Christmas. Companies like Games Workshop in the UK are in a similar supply problem.
Thank you for the great explanation of whats going on. Most people have no clue about how products get to their local store, and one day soon they are going to get sticker shock when they see the huge increases in product costs and and lack of product availability. BTW, are you going to be offering container service to Asia??!!
I can see where there will be a shortage of cat toys based upon their value and costs of shipping. Makes sense. Bad news for local mice. On another front, though not directly a subject of your channel, is there a spike in air freight costs? I know high value usually transports that way but curious if you know of any action in that area related to ocean shipping. Thank you Sal.
The infrastructure bill was about increasing AMERICAN manufacturing. Increased shipping prices are effectively an import duty on Chinese manufactured goods.
Or, you could have the VP give a speech about how each container is a different color which is so beautiful, then agree to pay double the 32K rate on all containers, then, have a senile old dwarf woman print ten quadrillion dollars in treasury bonds out of thin air, then tell us this will make inflation go down, then somehow convince over half the population that all this not only makes perfect sense, but is a model for all government policy henceforth and that display of hatred toward others is bad, except toward those who have a different opinion, and it's okay to have a potty mouth except for the mean, citrus fruit-colored man.

If i hadn't discovered your RUclips channel and the various other sites you have introduced me to, I would never had known of this situation.
Shipping parts from Vietnam to Georgia via Long Beach to Chicago to Savannah Ga went from $2,100 last year to $20,000+ this year!

Love your boat with the container on it!

Yes, air freight is also experiencing a spike.
Maybe overconsumption can take a break and stop! I see these prices for containers as GOOD NEWS for the planet. 😎😎
Enjoy your $200 "good for the planet" loaf of bread. Unbelievable
Ship it to Prince Rupert B. C. We got lots of space😊
would all of containers have a list of content, for safety ~ hazard concerns , or do private owned containers get treated differently
