Probably the saddest song I've ever heard, but also one of the most beautifully presented. No one else could have done this like Alison Krauss, but she loves doing the sad songs.

Brad Paisley once said this about her voice: “It’s an angelic, ghostly bluegrass ballad, really a tragedy, and I think when I get to heaven, if the angels don’t sound like Alison Krauss, we have been cheated.

Haunting. The song is about the lost children of the Alleghenies. Joseph and George Cox. I believe they were ages 7 and 5. Her voice is so beautiful.

I have to hold back tears every time I hear this song. The imagery this takes me to is vividly clear. Feels real. No other song has created this feeling for me. Alison Krauss is unbelievable. I was lucky to listen to hear live with Union Station a few years back. May never get the opportunity again living in Ireland.

Country and bluegrass songs almost ALWAYS have at least one key change, but usually two or more. The musicians and singers have to have a lot of skill to make and hit those changes in tune, on key and at the right time. I have much respect for the singers and musicians who perform those kinds of music.

This song is about a true story that took place in South Central PA, an hour and a half or so away from where I live. The location is around a state park where I've been camping a few times. I've seen the marker that shows where the boys were found, and also the tombstone in a nearby church where the boys were buried. Apparently Alison Krauss (rhymes with mouse) was friends with some people from right around that area, and they wrote the song for her. The lyrics are powerful, and her delivery is sublime.

Champaign, IL. 1985. Columbia Middle School. I'm in 6th grade, walking downstairs to Mrs. Hertz's music room. Another 6th grader already at the bottom of the stairs calls back to me -
Him: "Steven?" (Heavy emphasis on the 'n')
    Me: "What-n?"
8th grade girl walking past me up the stairs: **Giggle**
That girl? Alison Krauss. That's the first time I remember making a girl laugh, and I'll never forget. Just happened to be her.

I highly recommend Patty Loveless - You’ll Never Leave Harlan Alive.
Patty wrote this song about her grandfather working in the coal-mine’s in KY. Thousands of men lost their lives from working in the mines but it was the only way to make a living. Her vocals and the lyrics are a must hear. Thank you for branching out...love it.

Y'know here in Mizoram, a state in Northeast India, there have been cases of children missing in the forest. it's very strange they simply disappeared without a trace. locals used to believe that evil spirits took them away. this case we call it "khawmu chawi". some lucky kids when found claimed that they had a flying sensation where they get carried to places that are beyond reach of humans such as high cliffs, caves etc. they shouted at those who searched them but they couldn't hear them. the most recent happened in 2007. a 6 year old boy in the village of Tarpho in southeast Mizoram was reported missing in the forest and hasn't been found till today.

Yes, the gift in some form or another has been passed down to many. I live in this area as well and have been there several times as a child and adult. Everyone in these parts knows the story and most have visited. Unfortunately a lot of ghost hunters visit as well which I don't particularly like.
I went to school with several of his relatives. Several sisters didn't discover their gifts until later in life, but theirs are slightly different, however just as powerful. They believe their late father had it as well. This is a very small rural area and the surrounding towns are built from many generations of a lot of the same families. I think Jacob may possibly be a distant relative of mine also. In any case, many of us living here have similar gifts, just varying ways, myself and my children included.
Where they were found, to this day, it is a very very different feeling than anything else around in that particular part of the woods and completely silent. It is a very strange feeling, however it's not exactly scary to those of us who understand what we're feeling. Unfortunately I don't think this song is accurate, because I and my daughters independently all three of us felt them still there to varying degrees. I asked for a sign if they were there and I instantly got one. On a separate visit without me, I told my children to be extremely respectful of this place. My youngest 13 year old daughter, then, got too scared of what she was feeling. She and another cousin started hurrying back out the path. My fifteen-year-old daughter (at the time) lagged behind and didn't want to leave. She felt a little hand trying to hold hers twice while she was about to leave and she said she was almost positive it was the younger boy. We just know certain things and can't explain how. She ran back through the woods toward the site, crying. She felt extremely compelled to do so. She told them she was very sorry, but she had to leave and was in tears, upset for days. Maybe they can come and go as they please, but all of us kind of felt like they may be trapped there. We did not go together and I did not ask leading questions, but they described the feelings and the spot that you really feel a shift in how heavy it feels. It's almost like you smack into it like a wall and everything changes. I don't know how else to describe it. Many people leave flowers or toys for the children. I really hope I'm wrong, but all 3 of us felt it and my oldest daughter has the most strength of this particular type of gift. My other daughter and I are stronger in slightly different ways, but we all cross over areas. I had no one to talk to about this growing up and did not know it ran in the family until about 10 years ago. I just taught my kids to try to feel the difference between good and bad energy and that they didn't need to be scared of the good. I wish I had someone tell me that when I was little, because I've been doing a variety of things for as long as I can remember and was scared as all get out. Then I had a good experience. Now I understand my purpose for these things. It's a lot on all of us at times, especially 3 in one house, but we have things about us that not everyone keeps from their childhood. Most people are born with something and turn it off. My daughters and I don't have that switch apparently, but we use our gifts to try to help people, living or on the other side. Another cousin could never figure out how to turn it off completely either. It's just one of those things that's always there, sometimes stronger than other times. Also one of the definite Dibert relatives, her gift is very strong. She uses hers to help heal people's broken spirits with messages she is given. I didn't even think about her being related until it smacked me in the head and immediately got goosebumps. I asked her if she was a relative, especially considering this is a small area and indeed she was. I'm a message giver as well, but it comes to me in several different ways. My youngest daughter and I are both healers as well. She is stronger than I am. I just try to teach them what I've figured out and how to try to not take in the negative. Both my kids can actually see things, especially my oldest. I've only a few times. Random extra, we went to another nearby supposedly haunted place. We didn't ask for any signs, but they came through my oldest daughter anyway. Also I lived in a house that a light switch kept randomly coming on, with no explanation. Finally after the 3rd time I asked my landlord who owned the house before. He said it was an older gentleman electrician and he rewired the house. I was never scared and as soon as he told me, I knew the gentleman just wanted to say hello and let someone know he was there. My oldest daughter was just an infant. He did it several more times and I'd just smile and say, Hello, I know you're here. He was harmless. I could go on and on with stories. It runs in my children's father's side as well, which is why I think they are probably stronger or I just taught them early not to be afraid. If they were going to experience things, I didn't want it handled as poorly and alone as I was. I was right. They started having experiences young and they continue to get stronger. Some days I wish for an off or at least dimmer switch. It's tiring and takes a lot of energy out of us also. It's like we're radio towers and these energies (whatever you want to call them)...it's like they know they can use us to communicate or just let us know they are there. The Cox children are nonthreatening. It's not that feel. Just more sad, lonely, scared, probably what they felt. Maybe it's just residual energy of the event or it made an imprint on the land, but I think it's more than that. I've given many messages that I don't even know what they mean sometimes and the people I'm telling have to explain it to me, because they understand whatever the message is. Unfortunately I can pick up on deaths also. I don't like that part, but I guess it comes with whatever purpose I'm here for. I usually know of a death and a message is sent with it. And people like us, we seem to know when others are like us. It's almost we're sensing each other on some different level. The one relative of Jacob's I know for sure is for real. I knew her when we were little, then lost touch. But she gave me some messages I needed to hear and I know her heart is true. Also from other accounts, Jacob found someone else missing and his son did as well. There is a ton of history on this. I hope her hauntingly beautiful voice is singing the truth of where they really are. It's just really hard to believe after everything that just my own family experienced let alone others here. Believe me, I want to be wrong most of the time when things are of a sad nature. Unfortunately about these kind of specific things I'm usually not, however good messages I pass along have always been received well and with thanks.

the song is based on a true story. i just found your reaction video today, but i think you need to take a listen to her live in studio version of the song, just her and the musicians in the studio. you will get a truer sound of her vocals. this version has added reverb and echoes and such, the live in studio version does not. look for the same title, but the picture will show a musician sitting in a chair with a guitar and head phones and she is standing at a microphone in the background.

You really should give a listen to Alison Krauss song "New Favorite" ... it is very good, the melody (and message) is haunting yet beautiful. Keep up the excellent work here (you're great!).

The song is about the Lost Children of the Alleghenies. Someone said it was his wife, but it was Jacob who had the dream and why it's called Jacob's Dream. I live 12 miles from where these boys were found and the story is well-known. There's a monument where they were found and it also has most of the story written at the place. It is very remote and a very different feeling back in those woods. You could also Google or RUclips a lot about this. It happened in the mid eighteen hundreds so traveling even short distances was obviously hard, especially in terrain that is even hard to get to this day. Jacob's wife was originally from closer to where the boys were actually found, but Jacob did not know the area. That's why when he told his wife she said to look east of Bob's Creek. The search party did not think that the boys would be able to cross Bob's Creek, because the snow had melted and it was just thought that they wouldn't be able to get across it. The search grew from like two hundred men too close to a thousand coming from 60 miles around, which was huge back in the day for that many people to come that far. His wife and he traveled to his brother-in-law's house, who was the guide mentioned and took him to the spot he was describing. Jacob's last name was Dibert. The boys' last name was Cox. There are still many relatives of both living in the area. The brother-in-law's last name was Whysong. A local person wrote the song, but Alison Krauss recorded it. At first people suspected the family and tore up their cabin and found nothing. I guess a dowser and also a witch from a different county was brought in to supposedly help them, however neither found anything. There is actually a short book written about this many many years ago that has much more detail. I've read it, along with many other things about this. After they found the boys, the two men came under some suspicion for a while as well I guess, but no one would have found them at all if it wouldn't have been for Jacob's dream, his wife, and brother-in-law knowing where the place he had described. They were looking in the wrong area, because of the creek. There's also a little bit more to the story. In his dream he saw a dead deer, a child's shoe, and he saw the boys huddled under the fallen birch tree, which is exactly what the scene apparently looked like. However this part is something I've never heard anybody else mention in comments... Jacob and his son, who also apparently had the same gift, they both found two more people alive later on who were lost. I can't remember who found who, but one found a man and one found a woman through their dreams and both people were alive. I know some of the relatives and a lot of people in this area have some of the same gifts and more. It's very small, rural, and a lot of the same families stayed so I think things just got carried down. I don't like that people go up to "ghost hunt," however almost everyone has been there who lives anywhere close. Most people go with respect and a lot leave flowers and toys for the children. The feeling when you hit a certain spot in those woods, it just feels like you walked into a brick wall. There's hardly any noise whatsoever there which is really unusual as far back in as it is and there's no birds or anything. Some people have reported seeing them or seeing children's footprints in the snow only around the monument. I don't know about all that. I only know what I know and that is that my 2 teenage daughters and I all have several gifts that overlap. We've been there independently of each other and eerily described the same things, without me leading them. I only told them if they ever went up there, that they must treat the area with respect. The boys are buried about 10 miles away from where they were found. However, my daughters and I all know those boys are still in the woods, but I do not think they're unhappy. Maybe they get to come and go as they please, I hope anyway. I visited myself one day and asked politely for a sign if they were still there and if they would like to let me know. Their choice, not commands or calling. Big difference. This is why I hate it that ghost hunters go there. If nothing else, 2 little boys died there and it's completely disrespectful. I got an answer and a sign within seconds. I could already feel them prior, but it was their choice to let me know on their terms. When my kids went, my youngest daughter got too scared and ran back to her cousin's car, because she could feel the energy was very different. My oldest daughter stayed behind for a while. She knew they were there. At 15 years old and small herself, when she tried to leave she felt a little hand grab her hand, twice. She felt very strongly it was the youngest boy trying to get her to stay. She turned around and went running back toward the monument and where they were found. She was very compelled to do so and was crying. She felt bad leaving them and told them she was very sorry, but she had to go. She was genuinely upset for days, not because she was scared, but because she felt helpless, she knew they didn't want her to go, and felt bad that she had left them. Believe me or not, but everything I've said about my own family and the ancestors is true.

Hi sushi just looked at some of your other reactions and noticed how you like some of the technical aspects of the music. I really think you will like Home Free, any of thier covers. Thier harmonies are unreal and the base singer has a 5 octave range.
