  • A few days ago, I was cleaning and organizing my garage and found this vintage Makita cordless drill model 6012hd. I think the previous owner left it behind because it was not in working condition. The problem was a bad connection between the motor and the battery. After a little scotch brite, problem solved. This model was produced in the late 70' and early 80's. Made in Japan. I decided to keep the original label because of the history and I think will be interesting mixing the newly restored and the old. New chuck, fresh grease and voila.

These are good drills. I just inherited my dad’s drill given to him by my grandfather back in 1991 to tin his hip roof barn.

I have the 6095 D, it failed to operate some time ago, I have kept it hoping to restore it to working order at least. I only hope it is as simple a fix as this. You have inspired me to make the attempt, thank you !

Nice restoration. Your drill looks to have been produced in June 1988... that's the date code below the serial number. Last 2 numbers of the year followed by the month.

I still have my 6012HD that I bought new, and it still works fine. Mine is older because it has a keyed chuck. Even though I've owned newer cordless drills it's always there as a backup.

Hello ! This is a great video ! I wanted to ask: how is the motor secured inside the drill so it doesn't move ? Is it with the holes on the side of the motor's casing and the plastic protrusions inside of the drill's plastic shell that it's held tight ? Were there other parts involved in keeping it in place ?

It's a cool video. I have the same drill and I just did a different sort of restoration and paint job on mine (Van Halen). It would be nice to see (or even list in the description) specific things you used during the restoration. Like what brand of degreaser did you use? What was the brand of red grease that you put back into it? What was the brand and color of that spray paint, etc.? I get not wanting to promote specific companies, but it could be helpful to those doing a similar project. Ultimately I'm just happy that you're bringing these things back to life.

May I ask what color and brand of spray paint you used? I just won a 6095D model in auction, and am eager to restore it as well! ..oh and what kind of grease do you use? ...thanks :) Great video! I've watched it 3 times already lol

I would’ve thought that battery would’ve chemically aged and be no good any more......
