A VW Beetle lined up for a drag race with a Lancia Delta S4, exactly what I need in my life.
Don’t be so silly ‘ this is rallycross ‘ not drag racing
Rally's version of a time travelling delorean. And it is nice to have Murray commentating
Gotta love Murray Walker. How he knows the tiniest details of the most obscure of drivers. Great vid, thanks for sharing, not seen this in a LONG time!
Lol, including their travel and finance situations that he'll keep no secret.
One of the most amazing of the world i think. i can remember one comentarist of Argentina that is really, really good, but this one is amazing!
Galvão Bueno, from Brasil, is know from narrating all F1 races, being friend with Ayrton Senna, but the dude talks shit all the race, no detail, no info about the drivers, just plain stupid...
This racing during this period of time has to be the most entertaining type of motorsport ever. I hope you are going to upload more 80’s rallycross as I could watch It all day long 👌🏻
Yeah the group b era was absolutly bonkers. The division A cars had 700 hp, just crazy.
6 to 700hp, loud, unrefined. Magnificent. The racing then with all the Group Bs. Ahhhhhh. It's simply car pornography. What's the value today of that starting grid. Millions.
700 HP on the rear weels for some cars. Just can't imagine how it must handle. :D
@@ulukai_555 plus with turbo technology from the 80s
This is why I love RUclips. So much nostalgia watching these, the cars, the drivers and of course the man himself, Murray Walker.
Brings me back 30 years. Fantastic!
Probably the best era of rallycross brute force and brutal handling
"I'll have the one with the supercharger and the turbo please"........
Don't get me wrong, but the lack of a joker lap kinda makes overtaking a bit difficult, but still, some of the best cars
joao ninao joker laps ruined the art of overtaking
Really do love you a bit VHS Rallies.
What a treat on a bank holiday sunday morning!
Ah, thanks for the positive feedback.
Done subscribe and like :)
@@VHSRallies MR NEIL FITZGERALD IS THERE ANY MORE BBC1 RALLYCROSS FROM BBC1 GRANDSTAND ANY MORE OF BBC1 AUSTIN ROVER SPEEDSTAR FROM BBC1 GRANDSTAND THANK YOU VERY MUCH PLEASE CAN YOU KEEP UP THE VERY GOOD WORK VERY GOOD MAN THANKS AGAIN FROM MR NEIL FITZGERALD
Murray Walker +rallycross… doesn’t get much better than that
Never commented and know the effort to go from tape to digital. Thank you much appreciated. Lost gems we all remember. Cheers
Thanks for taking the time to comment, and for the positive feedback.
What the holy Christmas have they done to that beetle, to make it nearly keep up with an S4 Lancia?!
I'd love to know. Never really knew much about the 4WD Beetles and what powertrains they used. Very much homebrew specials.
That's what I thought, must just be a body on another platform.
I can only imagine it was a beetle chassis with engine and 4WD the 911's had in Rallycross.
But having said that, Alamäki must have had problems during qualifications, because if his Lancia was at full speed, he wouldn't be languishing down in the C-Final.
My thoughts exactly!.....
@@MrMcKane The commentator mentioned a blown turbo
I can't believe how close this is. All the efforts these days to have competitive racing and here I see a Beetle, RS200, Metro all fighting eachother.
Because manufacturers/race car builders weren't lazy back then and were working/thinking their ass off to have the unfair advantage. They didn't needed to rely on some wacky regulations/BOP to compete.
These videos are keeping me going through the lockdown. Excellent stuff, keep it up!
Thanks for posting - this was always the reason to watch Saturday afternoon sport; brought back some great memories! :-)
noobs : f1 is the best motorsport with the most talented drivers
me : *Laughs in Rallycross*
Thanks so much for the videos. These are the moments my old man talked out. I wasn't lucky enough to have been alive during this golden age of motorsport.
Mythic legends of machine that are essentially so powerful and sketchy they are all out of control for a whole entire lap..
Rallycross of today is like banger racing in comparison. Cars much easier to drive and they make no effort to avoid contact
200 thousand pounds for the T16 in 1987 makes today's prices seem cheap 😳. Great videos from a truly great era of Motorsport ! 👍
£200k is only half the battle. You need to be able to drive it as well. Contrast the subsequent fortunes of Terje Schie, the buyer of that 205, with those of Matti Alamaki, who swapped from his Delta into a Peugeot for 1988 and swept all before him.
Excellent,When men where men and cars where Monsters and Murray Walker is commentating What more do you want on lockdown,Big thanks for the upload.
Ah , those were the days... I must have been about five years old when me and my dad first went to rally cross. We still go, 40 years later, only just once a year now. We miss the 6R4’s , RS200’s and the quattro’s ! Last year, we also took my 6 year old son with us. Three generations loving rally cross and eachother 😊
Old group B warriors having their last battles ,god it must have been brilliant to watch live .
This was just what I needed.
Forgot how handy JP was behind the wheel 👍
PRICELESS
Thank you so much 🙏
Big salut from France 🇫🇷

Thank you..❤
Remember watching this back on Screensport 30+years ago. Happy days
This came up as a "recommended viewing" and it is definitely something I'd recommend viewing! Thanks for uploading and sharing.
Fantastic races, greetings from Chile!
I remember watching rallycross with my dad when I was a kid in the late 80s. Thank you for uploading this, it brings back many good memories 😁👍
Great British Rallycross, thanks!
LOVED THIS! Please more! What a great channel!
Thank you for sharing this! I love this era and Rally Cross ta boot!
Fabulous! Many thanks for uploading.
This footage is amazing!!!!!!
Absolutey fabulous the flames from those machines pure power
Fantastic!
What a selection of cars!
@13:53 200K for that 205 in 1987, that’s 480K in today’s money. Almost half a million pounds for a second hand rally car.
Just shows how valued those Group B monsters were. Awesome era in rallying.
That's actually a pretty good deal. IIRC, a wimpy, modern GT3-style car can run $500k-750k, and junior-level prototypes like LMP2/3 have a similar price. For a top-tier rally car of the day, $480k is a damn good price.
@@christianponicki9581 That's £480k, so more like $600k.
@@thatwillcarter Fair point, but it's still in the same range as modern cars, for the most part.
Guess its the only way you can have a car like that in a class that considers production models.
dont think you were paying so much for the technology in the car but the fact the cars even allowed in the race.
So good. Thank you for uploading.
Just Awsome thank you
Thank you so much for this, It's gold👍
Excellent video, better than boring F1 that's for sure !
Really enjoyed this, thanks for uploading!
thankyou great bit of easter viewing 🙃
Awesome.. Thanks for posting, back when I was 16 and cars were cool..
great vids thanks for sharing
The Delta s4 is BOSS
Great Rallycross action. Thanks for sharing! Any chance to see some Paris-Dakar videos from the 80´s?
Thanks for the positive feedback - but I've got bad news for you on the Dakar front. Rally raids don't do it for me at all, I'm afraid, and I have more than enough rally stuff to be getting on with anyway. So no plans for any Paris-Dakar, I'm afraid.
@@VHSRallies fairly certain there's a Vatanen post accident , 'Sport on Friday' interview completed just after his 87 Dakar victory on one of my tapes. That might be a good one to put up, however I do concur, raid's are a bit boring.
Biggest mistake Palmers MSVR tracks ever did was rip up the rallycross tracks at Brands, Cadwell and Oulton Park. Ironic as he's leading the B final in this video
Can you imagine watching that lancia there live unreal
Long live VHS.
Tremendous stuff!
I was lucky enough to go to the Rallycross GP’s. TV didn’t do it justice.
Well that brings big smiles to ones face :)
Sooo good!
Thanks for the positive feedback.
Marvelous.
Thanks for the feedback.
love it ... keep more coming

Odd that it took so long to mention that Jonathan Palmer was driving John Welch's Xtrac Escort, especially as Welch was in the same race in his Opel!
Excellent!!! Thanks for sharing.
Our internet youngsters can see that their Marketing Heros of today actually performed slidely differently (from a German Perspective, we have a lot of Audi fanboys who think the S2 was the over all winner)
I love Murray giving Palmer the 87 World Title "in class", when he was the only guy in the class.
It's a race about screaming engines, lot of horsepower and serious competition
Smell the nostalgia people breath it in
Lucent Index smell the Castrol oil burning
The good old days, no computer crap of these days
What channel would you watch this on back in the 80’s? I’m assuming it was on BBC’s grandstand around midday on Saturday?
Precisely. I think Football Focus was first, then Grandstand kicked in for the whole afternoon until Final Score at 4.45pm.
@@VHSRallies so am I right in thinking that adults spent more time at home in the day back then? Just chilling infront of the TV watching sport drinking tea all afternoon etc, then maybe to the pub on the evening?
S4 and RS200 What a time to race
That RS200 had a slow start because of that MG in front of it. If that MG was out of it's way, the Ford would've had a close finish with the Lancia. RS200 best rally car in this race.
A Beetle and an RS200 in the same race. Wow.
The 911 in the second heat was a rocket off the line. I wonder how these cars would compare to modern machines.
How would schanches xtrac escort fare against the rs200’s? Lap time etc
Great vid. I really think that Arnesson should have been penalised for his driving. Not just this race, but many I've seen him in, he displayed the same behaviour. Martin S and himself used to have some serious falling outs over the years 😂
Martin S hated everyone I think.
@@robertlund5694 he liked and respected Gallop. Thought he was very fair. Called him a gentleman driver a few times.
He was a firey bugger thought. I can remember him after being punted off the track waiting on the guy who did so to come around again. He stood ON the track trying to stop the race. Mental!
Should have more subs
🤗🤗🤗🤗
flat out love these old clips!
Thank you!
Where was it? What was the cirquit? Some curves looks like it is Brands Hatch.
Murray Walker, what a legend R.I.P "there is no smoking allowed in an Escort"
Murray tells us that the Lancia is the only Group B in Rallycross then tells us that the Ford RS200 is also a Group B. Good old Murray.
He was certainly prone to the odd bit of confusion, but in this case I think he was trying to say that Alamaki's was the only Delta S4 in rallycross. Which I think would have been true for 1987 - although more appeared in 1988, particularly in France.
how world have changed in last 30 years unbelivable.I remember mid 90s when escorts, golf mk2s and renault 5s were around and modern.People were different too
Now the cars are double the size, and the people are too
Cant hate on Fords really, They do go really fast.. its just they only go really fast for 4 laps!
Chevy wouldn't make it through 2.
Wish I could turn back time! Those were the days! Why is everything so boring nowadays?
Well missed good old murry mint
first 10 seconds of the video and there's a beetle lined up in the first row next to a delta s4
ok
👍
Cosworth engine I think you will find Murray.
didnt know brands hatch had rallycross
Woow....
More amazing these cars had manual transmissions!
To not red flag the final race when Palmers escort was right on the final straight. You see the drivers going either side of the escort as they finish the race. :). Diffetent times.
nowt a couple of waved yellows can't sort!
You don't get racing like this anymore. You just don't...
It seems that even in the past, rallycross cars had a much higher power output than road-going rally cars. Anyone care to explain why rallycross cars pack way more punch than their road-going counterparts?
Different regulations, with different (lesser) restrictions on engines/turbos etc. Plus of course, rallycross engines were stressed for much shorter periods of time (average 5min race or thereabouts) so could be pushed to more extreme tolerances, I'd say.
@@VHSRallies
So basically,
road rally car engines: more stress, less power
rallycross car engines: less stress, more power
The year true rallying died with no group b. Still good to see them in rally cross though but not the same!
best
The metro had a puncture from early!
Jesus how dirty was that Swede in the last race!
Every bloody race he was the same.
What in the blue fuck does that Beetle have under its bootlid?!......Its monstering Porkers and 6R4's ffs!.....
Alamaki and Skanki
In partenza, Alamaki li ha bruciati con una facilità impressionante. Poi , non ce n'è più stato per nessuno.
$200k for a 205 Bwahaha, scrap man said he was doing me a favor for taking it for free
That 205 wasn't 1/200 homologation specials.
You say that, that 205 was a Turbo 16, which was mid engined, had AWD and was a homologation special, only 200 where made. Before Group B folded, the 205 and the Delta S4 where _the_ cars to beat
It had 205 headlights and that's about it
@@starletbruh114 by that logic Lotus Esprit is actually Toyota Corolla because of shared taillights..
Yaaay another Ford win.
Days of cheap ex Grp B cars lol they are worth a pretty penney these days
turbo'd super beatle ahead of group b cars? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
awesome
