French dub is actually pretty good for a lot of animes: Samurai champloo, Belzebub, One punch man, Jujutsu kaisen etc... Although it's true sub is better most of the time, I dont understand all the hate surrounding dubbed animes, especially considering that the ones hating on it oftenly have never even tried to watch the dubbed version. I'm so glad the internet exists- now I have plenty of people on hand to tell me that my thoughs, feelings, and opinions on things are objectively wrong, lol But for real though- I hate people who present their opinions as objective facts. It's cool to have an opinion, and it's cool to feel passionately about that opinion, but it's not cool to present opinions as facts.
I'm watching Samurai Champloo sub, just like with Cowboy, but I did checked the dub version for them both, and is indeed pretty good, one of the best, but I still prefer watching with subtitles
Yup, there are amazing ones, you can list them, but it doesn't change the fact that all of the rest (vast majority) is just garbage. And you gotta invest in subs for that. And no, "I want to watch not to read" is not a valid argument here since most of the time there is not much going on when there is a dialogue present in animes. These are perfect "budget friendly" scenes for animators. Works just like a visual novel. You can easily follow text and the animation.
I've moved over to sub only in almost all cases over the years. The one except is Dragon Ball. And I'll fight anyone on that. I'll die on that hill. English Goku is a million times better than Japanese Goku. No one will ever change my mind on that. lol
I only watch subs... Because much like the pirates of yore, I can not be choosy with who I board. If I see a Japanese ship, I must board it. English ships are very rare to see on the High Seas of the Interwebs. Pirates live a hard life.
After years of watching anime and also japanese tv shows, i somehow managed to understand their jokes or even some of their conversation. My brain kinda just goes autopilots when watching anime or japanese tv shows trying to matches the voices with the subtitles as if i understand japanese, even though i'm still not sure if i really understand it or not. It's also happened with music and asmr audio, don't know why but it's just happens.
I enjoy watching some stuff dub so I don't have to constantly be looking at the screen. Also in animes like Naruto Shippuden the voice actors in the dub are FAR superior to the sub.
Best way to experience a form of media is in its unaltered form, this lets the viewer come to their own conclusions and perceptions without a middleman interpreting or presenting their take. This doesn't mean a sub or dub can't be good or even better, but at that point, are you really giving the original creation its fair shot, or are you largely just consuming what's been processed over and over? IE, best way to make sure you get the best steak in a cow is to butcher it yourself, provided you have the knowledge equipment and the environment to do so. You go to a high end butcher, and they break down the cut to what they think you want. The meat processing plant takes the offcuts and makes ground meat out of the stuff that doesn't sell easily or is just generally less desirable. Then the fast food joint sources the cheapest product they think their customers would accept and buys in bulk. Then you have the profit at all cost version of that mixing in whatever additive and binders/fillers to make pink sludge. At some point, that perfectly good cow is nothing more than dog food or fertilizer cause they can't process it any further. It doesn't mean you can't have a processed version that goes through the right steps and gives you a processed product that's awesome, but if all you've ever had is McDonalds burger patties, do you really know what a steak tastes like?
I mean, the area where that metaphor breaks is that you're not seeking a superior consumer product - you're consuming art, where there is no way to be correct. You're not going to tap into the collective psyche of the series composition team, nor can you read the individual will of the original author, not even if you were raised Japanese. The sub's translator is providing another take among infinite takes, as is the dub, as is the weird kid you went to high school with, as is a Pachinko adaptation.
@@Shaztrot With sub, you still have the original audio track. With dub, you don't have even that. And you don't need to understand the language to understand the emotions in the voice, something which is frequently lost in dubs, especially anime dubs.
