Camping in Windy Conditions - Wind destroys my tarp

- In today’s video, I had out into the Peak District with my RUclips friend, Stephen J. Reid. Our plan is to camp in an abandoned quarry where I test out what I think is a bizarre tent. I just don’t get it. Things don’t go quite to plan, as I have a major gear failure, but overall it’s another great little camping adventure.
Here's the tent I used 3fulgear.com/product/ultralig...

Man. I came for a Paul Messner camping RUclips video and got a frickin' MOVIE! 😄
That intro blew me away!!!
Two of my favourite RUclipsrs, Paul and Stephen, love it guys👍
Thanks Mark 🙂
What a collaboration. The one and only Stephen J Reid. Loved every minute of this. Can’t wait for his version of this trip.
As I mentioned before , you need to design a messner tent, I’m sure the top manufacturers would welcome your input 👍
Thought Paul had already done that, ie. took the best tent he's used, talk about the niggles (practical) then let the manufacturers make the changes. They could boost their sales by using Messner in their advertising ( sounds like a jet aircraft) and of course paying Paul a royalty. 😊
loved the cinematic intro!
Yeah pretty cool ❤
🙂
There is a way to tie out a tarp with torn eyelets, or if you don't trust the eyelets. You put a smooth stone about 3 inches from the edge. Push it up from the bottom and gather the tarp below it. Tie your cord to the tarp below the stone. Basically wrap the cord around beneath the stone. It is very strong. Much stronger than the eyelets in most cases.
Even better, carry a few plastic beads.
What fantastic videography in your video. I'm enjoying your channel more and more.
Thank you Paul and Jo
WHAT AN EPIC INTRO
Ay up me duck.
I don't know, only tother day on your vid when you were having a chat, you were saying you don't like overly edited vids anymore yet here you are with an intro looking like an Hollywood blockbuster, lol. Great fiming and editing by Stephen.
Talking of which twas great to see you with the legend that is Stephen J Reid.
Ay a good'un me owd 👍🙂
My original edit didn’t have that bit. Stephen just did it so I used it 😂
Great Video Paul. The tent is like my old "Saunders Space Packer" that I bought over 30 year's ago for a Karrimor Mountain Marathon race. I still have it, and used the outer shell without the inner when I walked Hadrian's walk route a few years ago now. It was a simple set up without the need for trekking poles either side.
It's interesting to see how they have took the design, and added a few mods.
Best intro ever. It's like the start of an epic movie by Spielberg. Paul Messner played by Harrison Ford. Stephen J Reid played by Chris Hemsworth. Mint.
There’s a comparison no one has ever made before 😂
Nicely put together Paul, I think i'd pass on that tent, your intro by Stephen was very nice.
My middle name is James too, Stephen... Hamish! haha. So you are Stephen Hamish Reid. Good lad mate, love your content and your honest style back home in NI.
Haha Stephen H Reid doesn’t have the same ring to it 😂
1st 5 minutes I thought I was watching a james Cameron movie ....great stuff 😮
James Cameron! I’ll take that! 😂
Great editing, really sets the mood.
I enjoyed that little adventure, very relaxing to watch, definitely gotta be the oddest tent I've ever seen lol. Thanks for taking us along and giving us your honest thoughts.
Cracking intro that 👌
Great vid, Paul. The past few weeks' worth have just been more and more enjoyable. Although I never tire of the simple ones, this is just more complete in some way.
Yay! Looking forward to this one, my favourite RUclipsrs together again I can’t believe you didn’t cook for @StephenJReid though Mez, shit host! You could have at least taken some Parkin he bought you fifteens 😂x
😂 He bought lunch beforehand
Was great to run into you at Tesco’s earlier today, sorry for pretty much shouting your name shaking your hand and running off but my two boys were in a rush to run out of the shop 😊 Great to meet you though albeit brief. Really enjoy your content, thank you 👍
What a lovely intro, your best in my opinion
Epic intro🫢❤️
The beautiful quaint town, wonderful
Quality intro keep up the great work Paul much appreciated 👍
Jo's favorite youtuber did an epic job with the intro - it's raised the bar for you Paul ;)
🙂
Brilliant stuff again Paul your a legend mate authentic real you just have it well done from Cumbria 😊
Thanks for the amazing content 😊
What an opening!!
Epic into. ❤❤❤ better watch out Spielberg.
Excellent filmography!
Beautiful area to hike and camp.
When worlds collide! Imagine my surprise when Master Reid appeared in your video. The only way this could've been a better collab for me, is if I had been there too! haha!
Great stuff guys! 🔥🧨💪🏽🤠👍🏽🧨🔥
Hello 👋 Paul just love listening to u! Hope all is well in your world 🌎🙏❤from Michigan
Very strange tent. Can’t imagine they’ll sell many of them. Venison steaks looked cracking. Another awesome video. ⛺️👍
Or as I know him, Stephen “the thumbnail guy” Reid 🤣
Great intro Stephen. And great vid Paul.
Living it up on the venison. Beef dripping or butter for me too. Tried the carnivore, great. Tried vegan, great too. Both in short bursts, I think you’re right, somewhere in the middle is best.
Really enjoyed this one, it was very atmospheric!
Who hoo another Messner video AND Wiltshire Man tonight too! Love your films Mr M, thank you so much for sharing 🤗
Just watching Sandy’s video now
Hi Paul. Well done on this excellent collab. Stephen's videos are next level editing. BTW you need to invert the canister on the SOTO as it causes premature wear of the generator otherwise.
Spectacular intro, credit to Stephen J Reid. Thanks Paul for going out and sharing!
😊
Good on 3FUL for trying something different, it's a hybrid tent and it did hold up.
Another great video, and the intro was very nice as well. Looking forward to more collaborations.
Just watched the intro, love that mate. Super moody skies
That what brilliant guys. Ye work well together. Nice to have company for the early dark nights. Jasus Paul that tent is bad. What were they thinking. Really looking forward to Stephens side of the adventure as well. Keep them coming. 😁
Great footage, I've enjoyed it 👍
Could always just get a couple of ultralight carbon poles to use in place of the trekking poles.
No different from the many tents with a hoop pole and rigid end poles, they're just giving you the option to use the trekking poles you're already carrying instead, and save some weight.
Does look too flappy though.
Phoooooar love abit of drippin'
Excellent stuff!!
Drippin' spread on bread with bovril 👌
Love your quality of video you have evoled.
Rudolphunt: Evolved*
Intro was class! 🍻
Best intro to date.
Wow, the best cinematography and editing I've seen for an outdoor video. I know it's a lot of work but a pleasure to watch. Thanks.
🙂
Stunning scenery! That tent.. ummm, it seems to have an "identity crisis" and doesn't know what it wants to be when it grows up! 😁🤣 The tarp ripping out was surprising. Glad it wasn't your only source of shelter! Will be interesting to see what the company says about it! Cheers from the USA
That's one weird tent! 😲
Thanks for testing it, so we don't have to 🤣
Great video, as always mate. Loved the intro too.
Oh...and you're starting a podcast? Beat me to it! 🤷 🤣
Good luck with it...really rewarding thing to do
my fav spot nice one Paul
Oh dear! Nice Dad joke 😂
Edit to add - agree about the tent, quite bizarre, probably best suited for the camping park rather than a hill-top. Neat idea for the cut-away floor in the vestibule though.
See you went for the Vivos ESC! Excellent choice Sir🎉
Laying out the base and I'd have that up in 3 minutes too. I'd love it for here in Scotland if there haven't been any takers yet. Thank you for testing it and sharing
I'd love it. Tents that size at 1.5 kg and so little when packed, porch and 2 doors. What's not to love?
I’ve figured out the perfect name for your podcast!: “Two Twits And A Tarp”😂
Thanks for showing me around your stomping ground 🙂 We will get you over to Northern Ireland eventually 😁
My video is going to take much longer to edit! Impressed how fast you get them published 🙂
His aren’t as polished as yours 😉
Not sure I’ll use that 😂
Good collaboration, there seemed to be great rapport between the two of you.
I think Stephen's tent with the crossover poles is the better design.
The cutaway in the vestibule is probably to make it a little safer for cooking and possibly to save going out in a storm, if one needed to use the loo urgently.
I've seen military tents with a similar flap in the floor.
Hi Paul, just wanted to say, wow your intro footage was stunning well done for creating such amazing moody footage that really captured the weather. Your camera and editing skills are an inspiration to me. Cheers mate!
Heya Paul, great vid, shame about the sketchy tarp.....hello from Western Australia!
beautiful intro! I love seeing where you wild camp.
I’ve never seen this tent before. Very strange design. The shelter was a massive disappointment. Imagine relying on it. Great vid with great food. 👍
Awesome Intro 👌🏽👌🏽❤️
The Vivobarefoot boots looks nice. The Michelin outsole looks like it grips well.
That tent would be way to flappy for me. . I like the smaller sc1 I have as I like cosy wee space as opposed to the big space. Great video and stuck a night with Stephen as well 😎😂 . Only messing , he’s a top guy. I asked him to ask you when are you getting the orange beanies in again as my Emma wants one lol . Next question … when you getting over to NI and the mournes . See what we have to offer ❤
I'll give the tent a try! I'm looking for roomy lightweight....might need to work on getting a tight pitch!
Excellent intro 👍
I use a vango Caingorn 2 man.similar to a Nevis but a much better tent liner and zips etc.
I had 57 mm of rain in 14 hrs a few weeks back and she was still dry inside. Yes I don’t really get the trekking poles with your tent either. Great video as always keep it up.👍
Aqua quest make the best tarps, had my safari version battered in the wind storm all night, next morning not a scratch on it, proper reinforced and bomb proof.
Nice one, Paul.
Mate. I broke my 3F UL tent, Rode Wireless Go, and my little heater on my previous camping trip. This brings me comfort that I'm not alone lol. I was speaking to other boys and they all said the same thing: sometimes a camp just falls apart and then the rage kicks in.
Definitely worth waiting to watch it on the big screen Paul 👍🏻. Missed the full name of that tent, but presumably it’s called the 3FUL WTF tent? Seems like one of those things that’s been designed to be different just for the sake of being different.
My last camp on RUclips was in that spot, great location and the skull was from a recent dead sheep I covered over with foliage at the time as much as possible to not distress people walking past.
Love that area
Hi Paul. Have you ever met Patrick D? You both live in the same city. That would be a great episode with you two.
Nope. I keep looking out for him.
Really like the looks of that tent, might get one when the 4 season inner os avaible. Always use poles anyway so don’t really mind the configuration. A bit like the Tarptent rainshadow that also uses a combo.
Thanks for the offer of the tent Paul. It’s a NO for me thanks! A bizarre beast!
Looks like a bit of a Frankentent! Perfect for Halloween and not much else!
Have to agree with you on the 3ful tent. Bit fiddly. All 3ful I have only go up well if the footprint is laid 1st but still sometimes have to repeg. I just got back from a mini break in Ironbridge near Telford and they have a Victorian village that sells fish and chips made using beef dripping and they were lovely! Definitely helps being solid too so easier to store
I switched to barefoot shoes about 4 years ago after a horrific struggle with plantar fascitis. All my shoes are now barefoot and I'll never go back. Took a long time to filly adjust. My plantar foot still doesnt have as much movement as the other one.
I prefer Be Lenka now as my feet are too wide for vivo!
It has some good features, size, price, shaped well with the ground sheet making it good for cooking, two doors and very light but there’s a lot of room to improve it such as more guy lines, double way zip for helping ventilation and the idea of trekking poles is good but would be worth having extendable poles as part of the tent that would help with tension. To the right person it would be a good tent
classic you can always spot someone who knows their way around videography they are like a startled gazelle constantly on the move and looked for another angle :) :). Great Vid :)
It’s good to see you back making videos again by the way. Love the new mic you bought. I’ve got a similar thing with timecode. Great bit of kit. Loved the canvas tarp too. That what I needed on this camp 😂
@@PaulMessner thanks your film crew could have carried it for you 😂
@stephen good job of the intro, Paul will be hiring you as his full time editor lol
Thanks David 🙂
Hi Paul, watch all, well almost all of your videos and thoroughly enjoy them. On this occasion I felt that you sounded a little down. Maybe it was the 'not so good tent' or the ripped tarp. Keep smiling your work is excellent.
Stunning intro, next level stuff!
Magnificent intro,
There's your way of making tea and then there's the right way!
A couple more guy ropes on each side of the hoop may reduce the wind flapping.
That intro was great. Keep it up! Your production is great and inspiring. Thank you!
Marvellous vid as usual Paul - love the way you tell the truth about that tent! ha ha whats the frying pan you used? cheers
That SOTO Stormbreaker is a great stove, love mine. I have only used it with Aspen4 petrol (no oil or ethanol additives). I use the small 400ml fuel bottle with the pump as it's much quicker to hit pressure being smaller volume, and it lasts for a few days on weekend trip. The 700ml fuel bottle that came with it is now just a fuel reserve which came in handy for week-long road trip around Wales. I haven't used the gas bottle adaptor like you did in this video, it seems to have feet to hold the gas bottle upside down... not sure why you'd use it inverted or normal way up...?
I can totally see how the tent design came around... Starting with the Lanshan, a lot of people used sticks to prop up the guy lines giving extra room inside. I think the designers thought that if we incorporate the trekking poles like that and have a single hoop keeping the middle up, people would have a lanshan but a lot more room. Having ground cover in a part of the vestibule /porch is becoming quite popular these days so I can see why they would add those. The tent isn't for me, but I can see the benefits
I suggested that they just got the poles the wrong way round. Keeping the trekkkng poles at the side like the lanshan makes it much more robust and then adding a smaller aluminium pole at either end. Less weight overall and a less flappy tent.
The warning I give to anyone thinking of buying a tent designed and manufactured in China (i.e. 3F-UL and Lanshan etc.) is that they are lazily designed with almost perfectly flat camping grounds in mind. As soon as you introduce a slope or lumpiness to the campground, almost nothing sits right with the tent walls or tie-off points...
Enjoyed the video Paul, I also subscribe to Stephen, he makes some good video. Looking forward to ur pod cast 👍
Wow did you hire Spielberg for that intro 😂 great job Paul
Actually Paul I like my tea strong with plenty of milk in it as well. Haha. Drink it how you want it mate. 👍
Epic intro.
Paul DH Messner 😂 tickled me that
I have a queedo spruce 2 and love it and only paid £60 don't think I'd be happy with it blowing like that
I looked at this tent but it looked like a pain in the backside to pitch plus the trekking poles at the ends seemed weird like you said so I decided against buying it 🤣 would make a good video though 😉
It’s not the best tent I’ve used 😂
It was Halloween i hope you both stayed on the path !! How about double guy lines all round so you can peg them in a V shape 🤔?
I like your rock table. You didn't hike that in did you?
