  • Colored Pencil Foundation Paste DIY Tutorial. This is a full tutorial how to create foundation paste. Use this product to increase the tooth of your paper , as a base for mica powders, and boost your color value when using paper that does not allow for multiple layers. This video is full of Artist Hacks, Tips and Tricks.
    The written directions are slightly different than the video because I have made improvements in the recipe. The supplies remain the same.
    Supply List :

    Mineral Oil amzn.to/3shHSWq

    Sofft Sponge Applicator amzn.to/3L0GQV6
    800 pointed cotton swabs amzn.to/3M0IY0E
    Recipe
    1 tsp Linseed oil
    1 TBSP Mineral Oil (Baby Oil)
    2 tsp Beeswax melted (This is a change from the 1 TBSP)
    1 Stick Oil Pastel
    Directions
    Step 1.
    Chop up the oil pastel into very small chunks (Mince)
    Step 2
    Mix in the Mineral Oil and Linseed Oil into the Oil Pastel. Let it stand for at least an hour while mixing occasionally. You can't over mix. You can leave it longer than an hour. I have let it sit for a full day. It won't go bad. If it gets dry, just add a few extra drops of mineral oil. It should look like a liquid paste. Thinner than toothpaste, thicker than water.
    Step 3
    Heat up about an inch of water to a boil. Using the bottom of a tin can (I use a soda can), place the mix into the can and then the can into the water. It will float and create a double boiler. Do not heat the mix directly on a flame. Put the heat down so the mix stays warm to slightly hot. Do not boil the mix. It should not be hot enough to burn you if spilled. This is a project for adults. Children need supervision. Make sure you use adequate ventilation. Do not cook the mix. Melt slowly and gently. Do not leave the pot alone while on the flame. It's no different than making candles. Use all the same precautions.
    Step 4
    Melt down enough beeswax to add 2 tsps to each can. You can remelt and reuse the beeswax. Don't throw out the can.
    Step 5
    Swish it around so it is completely mixed then pour into 1 oz tin pots. Don't lift or move the pot until it's hardened.
    Step 6
    Leave the pot to harden for at least a day. The pigment will get better and better with each day. It will be very waxy and translucent the first day. The final paste is translucent. It's a stain not a paint.
    Tips and Tricks
    1. (New) Melt the wax first then add the melted wax to the pigment container. Mix together while the can is still in the warm water.
    2. If you find your paste is too hard you can warm it in a bowl of hot water before you use it. Hard paste means you didn't add enough oil or you added too much wax.
    3. If you find oil on top of your paste do not remove it. Just rub it back into the container. It won't hurt the paste.
    4. If your paste does not dry 100% once on the paper or you put it on too thick dust lightly with pan pastel colorless blending powder. You can find that on Amazon. It should be less expensive than pan pastels.
    5. If you find the pigment separates away from the wax, the brand of pastel you used is at fault. I like to use Mongyo Gallery. Paul Rubio brand was OK but not as pigmented as the Mongyo Gallery.
    6. When creating black it will appear to have a waxy top. Decrease your wax slightly. Mix well. Black is very hard to make. It will also go on the paper as grey.
    7. You can use water soluble oil pastel.
    8. You can use soft pastel as long as you create a powder and use a muller. Use one stick per container. The powder will have more volume than the oil stick but when you add it to the mineral oil it will shrink down.

    Hi Lori,
    There's already a lot of comments here and I'm not taking the time to read them but I thought you could call this either 'Colored Pencil Paste' or 'Base Paste'. I like 'Base Paste' best out of the two.
    This is a neat little product. Thank you for sharing the recipe. I'm going to order the pastels today because I think I'm going to like the paste and sooo much cheaper than Pan Pastels. I liked “base paste” also. Maybe along the same lines - Pigment Paste?
      Since You’re using the pastels as the way to get pigment powder, but it’s essentially the same concept, taking a base pigment in some form and making a fluid but solid paste.

    I used to have trouble getting a consistent product making small batches of lip balms with beeswax pellets. It's hard to measure accurately because they don't always lay neatly in a measuring spoon and clumps of pellets are a pain. I switched to using a small inexpensive gram scale from Amazon to portion by weight instead of volume to give me a more accurate measurement every time. I also use disposable syringes to measure the oils for greater accuracy as well. 1 tsp = 5ml, 1 Tbsp = 15ml.

      Hi George, Thank you. I have tweeked the recipe a drop. Same ingredience but different ratio. It's my next video to come out. You have to wait a few days for the pigments to settle before fully testing it. They look great. One actually looks like smooth marker. No lines at all. Just smooth. I am pretty excited to show it. I have been like a kid on Christmas wanting to break into them to see the pigment. I also used some really cheap pastels. One box of 24 I bought on sale for 6 dollars.

  • @JC.SpdRcr5
    @JC.SpdRcr5 2 года назад +11

    Artist here. Great video. I watched the whole video. 😉 What a great way to re-purpose used up oil pastels. I think you could tweak the ingredients a little to make it archival and stable. I've made my own oil paints in the past and have researched this topic well.
    Here's a few things I thought might help you with your experimentation:
    1. Never use mineral oil. It never dries completely into a film and can separate the pigments when mixed with other oils like linseed. FYI all oils destroy unprimed paper, cotton, and linen over time. Your beautiful artwork will crumble in a matter of years. Use acrylic primer as a barrier between the substrate and the oily pastel.
    2. When using artist's grade oil pastels and mixing them with more linseed oil, mineral oil and more bees wax you turn them into a student grade oily pastel. You might be better off using a neutral pH alkaline refined linseed oil, bees wax and your own dry pigment to make your own oily pastels in a tin. You're 99% there already.
    3. If you make your own you can increase the amount of bees wax to help disperse and suspend the pigment particles better and have less separation while keeping the concentration of pigment higher thus having an artist grade oily pastel. Changing the cooling time by using a freezer to cool the mixture quicker while in the tin. I'd get into the habit of weighing out everything in grams on a gram scale vs. trying to measure it out with teaspoons and tablespoons. It's more accurate. Once you find the perfect recipe, it will be much easier to replicate over and over again by using weight (grams) over other means.
    4. Pigments characteristics vary: size of pigment particles, weight of pigment particles, and oil solubility (some pigments like oil, some no so much). If you see pigments sinking to the bottom while the wax and oil is at the top it's because the oils and waxes are separating while the heavy pigment particles are sinking to the bottom.
    5. Again I think removing the mineral oil might be an improvement. Try using a different oils such as poppy, safflower, or walnut. These oils are all artist friendly, environmentally friendlier, mix better together and have different oxidation rates that might better suit your needs.
    6. There's also this product called stand oil. It's linseed oil that's been heated in a vacuum. It dries slower and is thicker so your oily pastel will have a different texture and drying rates.
    7. Be very careful about adding any spirits, cobalt drying mediums, or black lead oil to your oily pastels. They often are harmful/dangerous especially when heated and the fumes are terrible for you.
    8. Fumed silica is also great for adding body to your oils such as linseed. When you mix linseed oil and fumed silica together it makes a gel. You can added fumed silica to your linseed/wax mixture and give your oily pastels different texture.

      This is very interesting. But there is mineral oil in oil pastels anyway, at least in some brands.
      I wanted to use the paste for fine art work, as a base for CP instead of using Pan Pastels), but I am unsure about the archival quality and the oil destroying the paper (without using gesso) was a concern as well.
      But this paste looks so fantastic that I want to try it.

    • @ColorMyWorld
      @ColorMyWorld  2 года назад +2

      @@Bonnie10au Every product we use for art contains something that will break down paper eventually. I am aware of these, but mostly this was made for coloring books and people who have trouble with the layering due to physical problems or the fact that the tooth in coloring book paper is so bad. Not to mention there is never an "Acid Free" discussion. In general I assume none of the budget brands of pencils or paper are actually archival up to 100 years. I have done some tests using UVB and I have had red turn pink in a matter of weeks (Arteza). It's only been a few months but the paste doesn't seem to change once on the page. The paste will get better as far as tone in the first few week. It get very pigmented as it cures. If you look at the sky color from the first video. It was very light. The color on the paper has not changed, but the color in the tin has become very rich. It's the same hue, but darker. It happens with all of them so far. BTW Mineral oil is PH neutral. Pastels have one of the best lightfast properties of all the art media out there. I have a feeling the tiny bit of oil is out weighed by the protective properties of the beeswax. We won't know for many years.

      @@ColorMyWorld thanks so much for your reply. I know you made the paste mainly for the colouring people. I want this to work because you created a wonderful product and it has a lot of potential. Sometimes I use Pan Pastels as a base for coloured pencils but it doesn't work that well for me. I prefer to use Pastel Pencils with the pans. That works very well. So to me this seems to be the perfect combination with the CP because they share similar ingredients.
      I am still waiting for one item to arrive and then I will try making some paste myself. In the meantime I am watching your videos again and again, lol.

      Yes it can be. I am a multimedia artist and a watercolor ground would work also Art Spectrum multimedia and pastel primer, or liquid gesso. Note these can be watered down and sanded to reduce grit. I would imagine that Advanced Colored Pencil Fixative would then protect it afterwards. I know a few hacks for those who desire professional quality for selling etc. Pastelmat from Clairfontaine is a smooth surface that takes excellently to colored pencils and layers. It would also work well with this pastel paper that is as smooth as silk but holds on to that pigment. Then spray it with the Advanced colored pencil fixative, not hair spray.

    Very interesting experiment! I believe Hajra Meeks has spoken about the longevity of your product. But I would remind everyone that proper surface preparation is so important to preserve your hard work and your artworks!
    You speak of water damage to paper but all oils will eventually “eat” surfaces from fine linen, to canvas to all kinds of papers, prepare your surfaces and this could be a wonderful medium! I wish you only the very best of success!

    Very cool Lori, our dear mad art scientist. I look forward to trying it. Looks like a gelato in a pan that dries and doesn't smear later...I am very excited to try this...backgrounds are my nemesis so I am hoping this will help fix the issues I am having with smooth gradient and water damage. One question, have you tried mixing an emulsifier in it like liquid lecithin? I wonder if that would give you a more even mix?

    • @ColorMyWorld
      @ColorMyWorld  2 года назад +7

      No I haven't tried liquid lecithin. I didn't even think of it. I wonder what would happen? I am going to try it. Can hurt. The linseed oil is a known color enhancer. There is no water in it. It's oil, wax and pigment. I did one with a watercolor additive and it didn't work. No this doesn't smear later at all. It feels like pencil and if there is a soft spot you can add pan pastel colorless blender and it dries it right up as soon as it touches it. Takes a fantastic seal too unlike pastel. No color change.

      I can’t stop thinking about this creation. It’s like a pigment, an ink pad, a watercolor pan and a colored mix medium all in one. I can see how this can enhance or replace so many mediums used in crafting scrapbooking and painting/coloring. It’s seems to be the answer to the problems I have with blending and large spaces with color pencils/ markers /watercolor markers.
      or wanting to take all these while traveling , it’s too much and then with watercolor it’s messy- I could see making up a range of these, making my own custom pallet of colors to take on the go and travel.
      I have to try this out. I have old pigments for years with not knowing what to do with them

    The picture you did reminded me of gelatos, and gel sticks. That's what they look like when applied with a regular brush (wet) or makeup brush, (aka what everyone now uses to blend there distress inks) stencil brush, or cheap applicators. (Dry) Many brands make the gel sticks. Too much work for me but at least you can make your own colors. The gelatos are on the expensive side so this is nice. Idk why you keep saying watercolor can't be used in books? It totally can be used if primed with watercolor ground first. I've done it with even Amazon paper. That was the first thing I experimented on. The ground is also great for adding a little tooth to smooth paper. You might want to get your self some of those make up brushes for application of your homemade creams or pigment gels. Alot of nice colors you made for yourself! I'm totally jealous!

      That's the funny part of this stuff. It looks like a combo of everything. It looks like water color, it looks like copic but isn't, it looks like pastel but it dries. I have literally had to tone down the color on the page. Wait until part 2 when I demo what you can do with this. The great part is this is cheap as heck and you can make it smell really good.

    • @blankmission5369
      @blankmission5369 2 года назад +3

      @@Colorista_1 I looked at the king art and they seem very nice. I just love all the colors you get! I must admit I have a bit of a gel crayon addiction! (Also anything water soluble). I have a few neo 2s open stock and they are different and very nice. They dissolve so nice with direct application. I like to combine colored pencil with the neo 2s. Not just for backgrounds. The neos work especially good on objects as well. I like to lay some down activate them with a bit of water and then blend in some colored pencils (prismas) next to it. It creates a very interesting color palette. Also the neos combine nicely with inktense as well. I haven't or wouldn't mix them together but slightly blended at the transition point they work very nicely together as a color palette. You get the nice intensity of the inktense with the soft semi translucent semi opaqueness of the neo colors. The gelatos can be more difficult to work with then gel crayons. They can be dry and crumbly. I love all the different things you can do with the gel crayons and also the neocolors. I love them both equally but for different reasons. My next purchase will either be the gelatos iridescent 1 set or the king arts. I can't make up my mind. Break out those beautiful neo colors and have a play with them when you get a chance. Your in for a treat!

    • @ColorMyWorld

      Yes, that's what it's for. It's not really a medium to use alone like pastels. It's a paper stain. Think of how people use different colored papers to change the tone of the medium you us. This isn't marker, it's not watercolor, it's not paint. It's not pastel because it dries. It just stains the paper so you can add pencil on top. The application saves you hours and using it on cheap coloring books helps you by saving tooth.
