Or you could put together DIY kits or something - either way! This is absolutely genius and since you thought of it you totally deserve to profit from it in some way, shape or form! Oh this is great! I love the saturation and blending ability! Honestly I prefer the more pigmented because it can be desaturated. I could see the mica even on video which doesn’t always show up. Maybe your light was blinding eh? Just kidding. When it was thickening I am sure that it was the wax in the stick cooling and mixing it extra well that caused the thickening. Then reheating it to add the wax with a good stir would be enough. I always cupped my hand and measured the tsp in my hand and everyone ate my food. I think that I won’t do that with this. You have been a very busy bee. I am so happy for you and with you. Awesome! You don’t need the “Shark tank”. Every major company that is in the “color” business from professional to student grade may want to pay you a price to use your patent in that way you wouldn’t have to worry about production just a lawyer team that does not get paid for sales just for making the contract that could encompass Caran’de ache to Rembrandt, Faber Castell or whom ever would use your patent. The patent form is not hard really really. Those companies would use pigment powder though. So your recipe may just only need to have dry pigment weight and a bit more of each of the other 2 ingredients me thinks in my humble opinion. And you need to rest a bit too. Happy happy!

It took seconds and no effort. I could have done the whole page in around 2 minutes on the clock. The only thing you can do that with is paint and this isn't paint. It dries in around 6 seconds.
As you said HOLY MOLEY! I've been following the journey and I'm blown away. I used to use prismacolor and tombo markers waaaay back in the day and really could have used this product. It'd have made my work go so much faster. I'm wondering if I can print out one of my paint by number canvases on bristol and color them like this instead of the clumpy/transparent paint they come with. I absolutely agree with Denise and the others: I really believe you should protect your recipe/invention in any way you can. The good news is that your videos are evidence that the idea is yours, which is a great start! You have created truly intriguing, brand new product/s with huge potential. If nothing else, others who use your recipe should link your name to it. Do you remember the acrylic paint pouring frenzy when there were new technique videos almost daily? One was named after a lady who came up with a pour recipe and method that made 'blooms'.. Shelly or Shellee or something? Can't recall the full name at the mo but I do recall seeing her name & pour style all over YT coz almost every pour artist was using her technique so her name was splashed all over YT in their videos and descriptions. That's because people did the right and decent thing - they acknowledged the creator! And you most definitely deserve the same recognition. So, thank you so much for sharing! Oh my gosh, I did try something and put it aside. I don't remember where it was. It came out really pretty. I have covid for the second time so I have been walking around in a fog. I forget my own name at times. I catch myself stopping mid sentense because I lost a word. When video recording this I forgot the word "Copic" and had to do a mad search though my art room looking for them by sight.

I will admit it hasn't' sucked :) I just made a canary yellow with half the mica. It was so bright that 2 tsp of mica over powered it. I am making some greens now.

Not at all. In small places I wouldn't wipe the ink. I was just showing how smooth you could get it. Water markers don't work as well. You know... it's the water/wax combo. The Alcohol works beautifully. I would love to see something you made being such a good artist.

I had an idea of what color I wanted to make. So I recommend maybe a test with a little piece of the pastel and mica together. Just a touch that you can see. I am going to do a video on making custom colors so you might want to wait.
FYI the linseed oil you recommend is A better than normal type and mineral oil vs baby oil even seems better. Pastels brands make xx difference! Lori is not trying to sell products to get $. As always she does her ultimate best to help improve color pencil artists !!!
Very happy to see that you've found a way to incorporate mica into your mixture, and that it's possible to use it with colored pencils as well. It looks as if it might be easier to use as background colors or larger areas. Very cool indeed. I'm curious about the reheating several times though. Why is that needed?
I found it suspends the mica better, but I have an even easier way. It will only cut a minute or two off , but it suspends the mica better. Mica is heavy because it's a metal and if the liquid is too thin, which it is when it's hot, the mica will settle to the bottom. I have started stirring it after I pour into the permanent pot. It didn't ruin the top seal and the mica stays suspended. I'll demo soon. I also found some mica is gritty, but not all. Actually only white and I am changing up the brand to see if it's specific to that brand. I suspect it is because it was from a small manufacturer (although a top quality one). More info coming soon.
I've been calling this magical stuff Pastel Paste in my own head. I have a question (and apologies if you might have mentioned this in the video but I didn't catch it if so) : Is there a particular function the mica powder provides or is it possible to skip this ingredient to make this more pigmented version of the original recipe? If it's needed, I'm wondering if there's a substitute one can use if one doesn't care to work with mica*. *Edit: Never mind. I realized it's for the pigment saturation. So now I'm wondering if a bit more pastel could be used against the ratio of the other ingredients vs the mica to make the color stronger.
No there is a different texture to the paste with the mica. It spreads further and takes way less effort than any other recipe I have come up with.. Right now I am working on a combination of the first and second recipe that would decrease the amount of pigment (really this is about as pigmented as it gets) needed. Mica is a very common material in the art world. It's almost universal. I have to source larger amounts before I could sell this. That involves testing colors because different pigments react differently. Green is a pain in the butt to work with. Yellow gets that white line that does not go away, but does no harm to the product at all. Black is very difficult to work with and white could be translucent if you don't mix properly. Orange is the best pigment to work with so far. None of my Orange mixes went wonky. I am really interested in developing new color hues. More experimenting LOL.
@@ColorMyWorld Thanks for this information. I'll have to order some mica to try this out, then. I was mostly avoiding it because I was fearful it would show up a ton in the paste and then on the paper and be super visible when/if metallic effects weren't intended, though I suppose the application of marker would probably tone that down. There's got to be a way to get black to behave better. I'm wondering if the pigment used in the Gallery pastels have tinier/larger particles causing them to disperse differently. When I make mine, I'm going to experiment with some carbon black paint pigment instead of the pastel to see what happens.

I have hundreds of pdf's and digital downloads but my printer ink will run or smear, what's the best way to prevent this and will these base pastes smear the printer ink or help protect it. Any help with this issue from anyone would be much appreciated. Thanks
I know this won't help with the ones already printed, but I have heard from watercolorists that there is such a thing as Pigment printer ink which is waterproof when dry. I haven't looked into this myself. Perhaps that might help for the future.

@@ColorMyWorld It actually might be a good idea to test the lightfastness of the paste. That way if any manufacturers get interested, you'll be able to show them proof of lightfastness
@@ColorMyWorld it is just the pigment powder with the egg separated to bind the color. The frescoes were tempura. They did it in a specific way and had to use the freshest eggs otherwise it would not work properly. It is quite a knack to it and the modern tempura method made it easier by grinding the pigment powder but I would rather have the omelette.
Been following this for a while, loves your content! My question is this- can you use the paste to paint a picture with brushes or other tool? I can only do so many backgrounds before I start peeking outside the box.
Why not? Paint it on and use ear swabs for small areas or swirl cotton around a tooth pick to get smooth hard edges where needed. Small synthetic acrylic brushes would work great.

I have some dry loose pigment and mica powders from my soap making days. I’m hoping I can make some with them too! However, I bought all the stuff to make this amazing product of yours (I agree with others, you should patent it but I’m grateful I can make my own!) I bought the refined linseed oil from your link and didn’t notice it had been changed to “stand oil “. Which is linseed oil but in a thickened form. I’m truly hoping that it won’t matter. Have you tried the stand oil approach? I’m also going to attempt to make the market base paste for the white to get a more opaque white. Have you found the marker base white to be more opaque than the pencil paste?
Black and white are very difficult to make. I have actually done around 10 different variations until I got it right. Just don't be disappointed if it's very translucent. I am now making them with professional pigments. It's just gone from good to better to best for me. I haven't tried stand oil. If it's thick cut by half. See how it works and go from there. It's been a lot of experimentation on my side. Too much to even film. Yes, micas work great in them.

I am at the tail end of it and nobody knew.. this time. I had it twice. Lucky me! 4 vaccines and covid once. I have no immune system!
@@ColorMyWorld It doesn't have to perfect to file a patent. It's the concept and not the exact recipe. Isn't terribly expensive to file it on your own. It's been awhile but I believe it's $175 or so. But bless you for sharing it with us, you are amazing 💞
Lori is there a way to just use the raw ingredients of pigment and clay so that you could make the doughy pigment in one step and skip chopping the pastel? I only saw really expensive pigments but I have been looking for a line that sells a bunch of pigments and all I could find was mica which if I read right is different than raw pastel/paint pigment?
The version I will be selling is going to have professional pigments mixed with the pastel. Mica works and is reasonably priced if you get the sets. What I bought was NOT reasonably priced LOL.
Wondering if adding a little PVA white glue would give a bit of a sheen (or more of a sheen?) Not adding it during the processing or making, but after it's all combined, and using a small sample to experiment?
They come and go. I would wait a drop longer. I am using smaller tins now and they are working out a lot better. I am using the clear plastic ones. Not only can you see the color easier, but the volume allows you to pull out some and use it to create new colors.

The oil paint sticks are extremely pigmented so it might be a massive fail but hey why not try. I am Australian and ended up finding some suitable containers on our ebay. @@crisscross104 Actually I have been using pigment for the past 5 months along with my own pastel recipe. Keep experimenting. The stuff I am about to put into my etsy shop is powerful and looks fantastic. There are some very inexpensive brushes I have been using that make all the difference. I am behind with everything now because my Husband passed away, but the stuff I made 5 months ago is aged properly and amazing. Apparently when you let the wax sit with the pigments they just get better in time.
Maybe someone has already provided this tip but here it is anyway😉 us an pencil sharpener to shred your color sticks. Of course it has to be the kind that can sharpening the "fat" pencil .
Yes, you can. I use one now, but you have to cut the cans tall or the wax goes all over your kitchen. Yes, I was stupid enough to do that! Oh and don't drop diamond dust on black floors. Tinkerbell sneezed in my kitchen over the weekend.

@@spleenforsoul My grout sparkles like diamonds. It's kind of pretty considering I have black marble floors. One of my kids asked if we could get the floor grout redone using the diamond dust dropped. Actually I wish I could.
Please, Please, PLEASE be careful/mindful of where you source your mica. Many of the "cheap" brands arent ethically sourced, but their mica provided off of children laborers who mine for it. There are videos on this ( search "children mica mines" ) that can explain far better then I, but if you don't throughly investigate where your buying you may be supporting child labor and death without realizing....
Best recipe instruction ever: add two teaspoons and whatever is on your hands.

I will admit it hasn't' sucked :) I just made a canary yellow with half the mica. It was so bright that 2 tsp of mica over powered it. I am making some greens now.

Oh wow!! It just keeps getting better and better!! Question: do you have to wipe off the marker after you put it down over the base paste? I was just wondering how to use this in smaller places.
Not at all. In small places I wouldn't wipe the ink. I was just showing how smooth you could get it. Water markers don't work as well. You know... it's the water/wax combo. The Alcohol works beautifully. I would love to see something you made being such a good artist.

I had an idea of what color I wanted to make. So I recommend maybe a test with a little piece of the pastel and mica together. Just a touch that you can see. I am going to do a video on making custom colors so you might want to wait.
FYI the linseed oil you recommend is A better than normal type and mineral oil vs baby oil even seems better. Pastels brands make xx difference! Lori is not trying to sell products to get $. As always she does her ultimate best to help improve color pencil artists !!!
Yes, there is room for up and down in quality and price for this base. I am trying to use the best while keeping it affordable for average people.
Very happy to see that you've found a way to incorporate mica into your mixture, and that it's possible to use it with colored pencils as well. It looks as if it might be easier to use as background colors or larger areas. Very cool indeed. I'm curious about the reheating several times though. Why is that needed?
I found it suspends the mica better, but I have an even easier way. It will only cut a minute or two off , but it suspends the mica better. Mica is heavy because it's a metal and if the liquid is too thin, which it is when it's hot, the mica will settle to the bottom. I have started stirring it after I pour into the permanent pot. It didn't ruin the top seal and the mica stays suspended. I'll demo soon. I also found some mica is gritty, but not all. Actually only white and I am changing up the brand to see if it's specific to that brand. I suspect it is because it was from a small manufacturer (although a top quality one). More info coming soon.
I've been calling this magical stuff Pastel Paste in my own head. I have a question (and apologies if you might have mentioned this in the video but I didn't catch it if so) : Is there a particular function the mica powder provides or is it possible to skip this ingredient to make this more pigmented version of the original recipe? If it's needed, I'm wondering if there's a substitute one can use if one doesn't care to work with mica*.
*Edit: Never mind. I realized it's for the pigment saturation. So now I'm wondering if a bit more pastel could be used against the ratio of the other ingredients vs the mica to make the color stronger.
Yeah I really wonder if you can use just a higher concentration of pastel for a similar effect.
No there is a different texture to the paste with the mica. It spreads further and takes way less effort than any other recipe I have come up with.. Right now I am working on a combination of the first and second recipe that would decrease the amount of pigment (really this is about as pigmented as it gets) needed. Mica is a very common material in the art world. It's almost universal. I have to source larger amounts before I could sell this. That involves testing colors because different pigments react differently. Green is a pain in the butt to work with. Yellow gets that white line that does not go away, but does no harm to the product at all. Black is very difficult to work with and white could be translucent if you don't mix properly. Orange is the best pigment to work with so far. None of my Orange mixes went wonky. I am really interested in developing new color hues. More experimenting LOL.

I was mostly avoiding it because I was fearful it would show up a ton in the paste and then on the paper and be super visible when/if metallic effects weren't intended, though I suppose the application of marker would probably tone that down. There's got to be a way to get black to behave better. I'm wondering if the pigment used in the Gallery pastels have tinier/larger particles causing them to disperse differently. When I make mine, I'm going to experiment with some carbon black paint pigment instead of the pastel to see what happens.

I have hundreds of pdf's and digital downloads but my printer ink will run or smear, what's the best way to prevent this and will these base pastes smear the printer ink or help protect it. Any help with this issue from anyone would be much appreciated. Thanks
Great question. It smears pencil line. I know that for sure, but I don't know about ink. I'll try it out and let you know.

I know this won't help with the ones already printed, but I have heard from watercolorists that there is such a thing as Pigment printer ink which is waterproof when dry. I haven't looked into this myself. Perhaps that might help for the future.
@@jennw6809 Thank you I will have to look into that, I have made the pencil base and it didn't smudge the printer ink and I'm testing now how other mediums work on top of this base. I will definitely look into the pigment printer ink thanks again, appreciate you replying.

Tempera pigments from what I know aren't lightfast. I could be wrong. They are made with eggs right?
@@ColorMyWorld It actually might be a good idea to test the lightfastness of the paste. That way if any manufacturers get interested, you'll be able to show them proof of lightfastness
@@ColorMyWorld it is just the pigment powder with the egg separated to bind the color. The frescoes were tempura. They did it in a specific way and had to use the freshest eggs otherwise it would not work properly. It is quite a knack to it and the modern tempura method made it easier by grinding the pigment powder but I would rather have the omelette.

They are made and curing now. I will probably put them up for sale on July 4-5. The pigments are so rich you don't have to color over them.

Been following this for a while, loves your content! My question is this- can you use the paste to paint a picture with brushes or other tool? I can only do so many backgrounds before I start peeking outside the box.
Why not? Paint it on and use ear swabs for small areas or swirl cotton around a tooth pick to get smooth hard edges where needed. Small synthetic acrylic brushes would work great.

100% yes especially this version. You need to be fast. It sets quickly. It's faster than acrylic.

I have some dry loose pigment and mica powders from my soap making days. I’m hoping I can make some with them too! However, I bought all the stuff to make this amazing product of yours (I agree with others, you should patent it but I’m grateful I can make my own!) I bought the refined linseed oil from your link and didn’t notice it had been changed to “stand oil “. Which is linseed oil but in a thickened form. I’m truly hoping that it won’t matter. Have you tried the stand oil approach? I’m also going to attempt to make the market base paste for the white to get a more opaque white. Have you found the marker base white to be more opaque than the pencil paste?
Black and white are very difficult to make. I have actually done around 10 different variations until I got it right. Just don't be disappointed if it's very translucent. I am now making them with professional pigments. It's just gone from good to better to best for me. I haven't tried stand oil. If it's thick cut by half. See how it works and go from there. It's been a lot of experimentation on my side. Too much to even film. Yes, micas work great in them.

I am at the tail end of it and nobody knew.. this time. I had it twice. Lucky me! 4 vaccines and covid once. I have no immune system!

Lori is there a way to just use the raw ingredients of pigment and clay so that you could make the doughy pigment in one step and skip chopping the pastel? I only saw really expensive pigments but I have been looking for a line that sells a bunch of pigments and all I could find was mica which if I read right is different than raw pastel/paint pigment?
The version I will be selling is going to have professional pigments mixed with the pastel. Mica works and is reasonably priced if you get the sets. What I bought was NOT reasonably priced LOL.
Wondering if adding a little PVA white glue would give a bit of a sheen (or more of a sheen?) Not adding it during the processing or making, but after it's all combined, and using a small sample to experiment?
I have used mod podge on it, but a simple spray will shine it nicely. I use Krylon triple thick.

I can't get the link to the tins on amazon to work. What is the actual name of the product. I can find them without the solid lids but not the clear
They come and go. I would wait a drop longer. I am using smaller tins now and they are working out a lot better. I am using the clear plastic ones. Not only can you see the color easier, but the volume allows you to pull out some and use it to create new colors.
@@ColorMyWorld thank you. I have a ton of mica and oil paint sticks from my encaustic play so I thought I would see if that works as nicely as your pastels. The oil paint sticks are extremely pigmented so it might be a massive fail but hey why not try. I am Australian and ended up finding some suitable containers on our ebay. I should say I think what you are doing and sharing is wonderful.
@@crisscross104 Actually I have been using pigment for the past 5 months along with my own pastel recipe. Keep experimenting. The stuff I am about to put into my etsy shop is powerful and looks fantastic. There are some very inexpensive brushes I have been using that make all the difference. I am behind with everything now because my Husband passed away, but the stuff I made 5 months ago is aged properly and amazing. Apparently when you let the wax sit with the pigments they just get better in time.

Maybe someone has already provided this tip but here it is anyway😉 us an pencil sharpener to shred your color sticks. Of course it has to be the kind that can sharpening the "fat" pencil .
No but a nice sharp razor will do it quickly.

Yes, you can. I use one now, but you have to cut the cans tall or the wax goes all over your kitchen. Yes, I was stupid enough to do that! Oh and don't drop diamond dust on black floors. Tinkerbell sneezed in my kitchen over the weekend.

@@spleenforsoul My grout sparkles like diamonds. It's kind of pretty considering I have black marble floors. One of my kids asked if we could get the floor grout redone using the diamond dust dropped. Actually I wish I could.

Please, Please, PLEASE be careful/mindful of where you source your mica. Many of the "cheap" brands arent ethically sourced, but their mica provided off of children laborers who mine for it. There are videos on this ( search "children mica mines" ) that can explain far better then I, but if you don't throughly investigate where your buying you may be supporting child labor and death without realizing....
