The Ah Counter, like Timer, is a Quantitative evaluation as opposed to a Qualitative one (like Speech evaluator). I liken it to Dragnet: Just the facts, Ma'm. Just read the name and the crutch words and the numbers. I just did the role and caught 43 Ums in one speaker. It is important to know that we do these things. There should not be any opinion given in this role (or Timer). They are statistical reports that are very necessary to a speaker's learning curve.
I will be the ah counter tonight for the first time! I agree that 2nd ah counter is better. The first one a little bit dull. Ah counter needs to be strong but also a touch of humor can make people feel more comfortable.
You can do it with some humor but the second Counter treated it like a speech. It is NOT. This tendency to add your own special sauce is a detriment to the club. You learn listening skills and you get a CL credit for it. If you want to speak more in a role, be the TMoD or give a speech. Ah Counter and Timer are not the places to wax rhapsodic.
I agree Peter, a bit of humor ok. but that 2nd counter's report took almost as long as a speech would have taken, just go up, provide the information and don't try to turn it into what is not.
