- A short video of me making a fine box finial.
I am a production turner so my methods may be slightly different to most as I tend to find the fastest way to turn not the easiest.

Oh Lordy, that was a pleasure to watch.
I, too will be trying some of that with my skew.
I'll just watch it again though...
+David Smart Thanks David, I am glad it has encouraged you to try it.
Just retired and bought a lathe.. I want to master the Skew and making fine finials, dont think Ive got 35 years left but will do my very best, thank you for the video, certainly helps me along
Thank you and enjoy the journey
Great work on this finial. You've inspired me to go practice :)
+Barry's Workshop Thank you for your comments. If it has inspired you then its worth posting for that alone. Regards
Steve
Doing spindles like this is great and a lot of fun . I'd like to set up a wood lathe , with multiple different patterns to do multiples of the exact same spindles . So I can do 4-12 of them exactly the same , for my clocks .
My two favorite tools for massive catches - the skew and the detail spindle gouge. I’m very envious.
Thank you but with a bit of concentration and repetition you to can do it.
Wow, you are an artisan craftsman. I was transfixed watching you create the finial.
Thank you
Great work with the skew! Nice work

Well done.
Thank you
Wow. Nice.

I heard this from an Australian guy, who heard it from some skew master, but he couldn't remember the name. "The bevel should rub the wood, but the wood shouldn't know it." I do okay with bowl gouges, but the skew and I don't really get along....
That’s a great way of putting it. No idea why a man of your skills doesn’t get on with the skew. It’s far and away the best tool in a spindle turners armoury unfortunately many turners these days don’t realise it’s potential and even doubt what it’s capable of in the correct hands. For hundreds of years it was the main tool then for a reason I don’t know in the last 40 years it has been largely ignored, possibly because the trade has declined while hobby turning has grown and that side seems to focus on just bowls.
your skills remind me of bob hamilton, gone for some time now but also a pleasure to watch, what's your turning speed if you don't mind
watching this relaxes me...who'da thought?
Thank you you’re not the first to say that.
BEAUTIFUL Steve! I'll see ya on Facebook Buddy!..... Gus
+TheWoodWerker Thanks Gus, much appreciated.
Excellent tool control, which is impressive, but I’m really interested in the shapes you stack together, man I need to study up on those
Thank you
I am enjoying your video.Really cool choice for the music. What is the bevel on your skew chisel?
Thank you, approx 30 degrees
I would have had at least 20 catches doing that with a Skew :) great skill shown
Thank you
very well done. I have some probably easy questions for you. Okay, say I've turned a box, and then the finial, but how do I attach the finial to the lid of the box. I see that you put a small tenon on the finial to attach to the lid. But do I predrill the hole before I make the box, or after? I'm stumped. I make the base of the box with a tenon on one end. Then I make the lid, to fit the base, with the tenon on that end, parting off the tenons on each end, so the base and the lid will fit eachother. Then, how do I hold the box, to drill a hole into the center, for the finial. Thanks for your help.
Make a jam chuck for the lid and put the drill bit in a Jacobs chuck in the tailstock to drill.
can you just share how you sharpened that skew? CBN? wetstone? several grits or just one? beautiful piece.
I Freehand grind on an 8” ruby stone on a slow speed grinder.
Mastery! When i grow up, i'd be proud to get it this good so easily. Thanks for sharing. Two questions... What speed and how do you sharpen your chisels, do you hone or straight off the grinder? Cheers!
I freehand grind on a slow grinder. I use my tools straight off the grinder no honing.
Do you turn these types of finials in only one direction, i.e. with the top of the finial oriented to the tailstock?
I'm finding it pretty tough going trying to fit a finial tenon to a hollow ornament globe this way.
Yes it’s very difficult if not impossible to turn them the other way.
СЛАВА !!!!!!Нашим мастерам!!!!!!!!!!
Thank You
What is this music? I have watched a few times for it lol
I like the piece though I don't know what I'd ever use it for.
Thank you
What species of wood wood that be? Thank you for the inspiring and yes, instructional video.
Thank you this is beech.
What size skew do you use for the most part, and is it a straight skew or regular angled skew?
I use 1" it is a skewed angle slightly less than standard
I saw a comment on an other video that you use a negative rake for much of your work, is that what you use for most of your stock removal? On your watch and pedestal video I believe. Do you feel that this is a more efficient tool that a regular skew do so you use both, and would a bedan be as good for that kind of stock removal, in your opinion?
I only use a negative rake scraper for faceplate work. I use it mainly on the smaller dia work. It is far more efficient than a skew. On bigger diameters I use a bowl gouge.
Oh and a bedan would be OK for this.
What a great video. Can I ask what speed you were turning at?
Thank you 1250rpm
Real nice... What's the name of the little song? I love that too.
+couerl Thank you, sorry I can't remember the song title it was down loaded from YT free music.
What's the best wood to turn a finial out of thanks . lovely work
Any very tight grain. Maple for example
Thanks for that
Steve just found you on you tube yourself being a production turner what speed do you turn at i suppose you do not waste time altering lathe speeds amazing skills by the way
The speed varies depending on the job, diameter, length if the piece is balanced all play a part in what speed and varies enormously.
I have a question: How is the stock held in the chuck? With a worm screw or by the flats of the chuck?
It’s the flats in the chuck
@@woodturner21 thanks.
Very clever .What speed are you turning this at Steve
Sorry for the delay George I didn't get a notification of this comment. It is 1250 rpm
Do you sharpen the skew all the way to 1000 grit?
No I use it straight off the grinder and I used an 80 grit ruby wheel
@@woodturner21 , oh, I was under the impression that the skew had to be razor sharp. Thanks
Can you make Gothic finials?
Most gothic finials are not turned I only do turning.
Ever make larger finials?
Yes I make every size imaginable
Qual a finalidade dessas peças?
Sorry I can’t translate this
