One of the most surprising things I discovered was what a great fantasy writer Orson Scott Card is. His short story (Maps in a Mirror collection) Middle Woman is such an interesting take on dragon lore, meanwhile, his novel Hart's Hope is more the typical tale from a 'medieval tavern' than anything like Lord of the Rings (think the scenes in Prancing Pony in Bree) Oddly, from the same collection (Maps in a Mirror) Orson Scott Card writes Lost Boys a horror story more original and far better than anything put out recently by Stephen King.

There’s even a conversation the two have where he warns her of the reality of war, that isn’t like in the tales she read about, and also tells her that he once had dreams as a young man but gave them up for duty and family, eventually finding even better purpose and reason for living in his children than any dream could have. Though she doesn’t understand, he promises a day will come when she will. And by the end of the story, Helm is killed and Hera realized how right he was about war, her illusions shattered. You and I usually have very similar tastes when it comes to movies but, man, I feel like we both saw a totally different film! Just came back from seeing it and I absolutely loved it! I found it very engaging and had no problem with the animation style. It's not perfect but it looked beautiful. I loved the old school Anime and Sword & Sorcery vibe of the movie; kind of reminded me of Ladyhawke at times. And I didn't find it dragged at all in its running time. The Two Towers, the last hour of The Return of the King, and The Hobbit movies; now those are movies that drag on and on. I didn't find any minute of its 2 hrs 15 min runtime to be boring or needless exposure. You must've been in a foul mood when you saw it 😅 Anyhow, I'm seeing more and more positive feedback now that the movie's open wide. I feel like a lot of the negative criticism for this movie is from Tolkien worshippers who won't accept anything written in the LOTR realm by anyone other than Tolkien. I look forward to watching it again on Blu-ray ⚔
I agree. I just watched it today and enjoyed it. There are clearly flaws but it has a lot of great moments. If you didn't know anything about LOTR, it's still a fine stand alone film about revenge and overcoming hardship
It's the opposite of Lady Hawk, where the whole thing is about love between a man and a woman. This modern garbage heap is about how much she doesnt like men, and how much better she is then all the men, and how she outfights the men, and her old lesbian girl friend can outfight like 15 men. Then she puts on a dress and says she is the bride of death. OMG what a poop fest.
Hera ain't that bad. People are complaining about girl BOSS, but she really isn't. Héra didn't shout at the court at everyone "I have a tempest to not marry no man". She begged Wulf in a whisper to not propose, cause she knew the system: marriage is not up to her. She only refused Wulf in private and she offered to marry Wulf when later she found out Wulf was starting a war. She wanted to ride out and fight but she respected and obeyed her father. I mean compared to RoP's Galadriel, she's a saint. I can have a friend like her (unlike Galadriel).
@terrylandess6072 How about be fair and say what it is? Instead of whatever you are calling here. People talk about legacy yet I bet most of the tubers and comments never read one page of JRRT.
Hera is a girlboss. And she squealed that she would marry no one, and didnt need no man, like 5 times. She beat up a man, she was right about everything, and she rode off with her ugly lesbian girl friend. In the end the dude even says she should be the queen. I hate GB. Any woman that can outfight a grown man is a gb anyhow.
It wasn’t that fkin bad, come on. Not everything has the be 10/10 amazing. Just enjoy it for what it is. I heard a bunch of word salad that boiled down to “it’s lazy it’s bad it’s boring” with very few specifics as to why. Poor and rambling review that doesn’t paint a clear picture of its case.
It was literally awful. It literally had a girlboss. The chick kept telling us she didnt want to marry anyone like every twenty minutes, she could outfight men, climb up impossible mountains she was smarter then all the poor foolish males, and she rode off with her carpet munching old hag. To say this was the antithesis of Tolkien would be correct.
Would you say this War of the Rohirrim is better or worse than Ralph Bakshi's Lord of the Ring animated film from 1978. Don't forget Excalibur for one of the best 80s fantasy movie. I thought that Helm Hammerhand was the Tolkien version of One Punch Man.
The ironic thing is that the audience they think they're making this for doesn't want it, not at the levels you need to justify the production of a general release (not art house) movie. Still, I would say mission accomplished with The War of the Rohirrim. They needed to get a movie out to keep the rights and this is a movie and at $30 million not too expensive. I had to edit my original comment because Google AI said the production cost was $93million, but that was the average cost of Peter Jackson's original movies.
I overpaid the $10 to watch it on Amazon. I am a huge fan of Rohan and its history and culture. I am in agreement with James, I was never engrossed in this film. The Japanese anime style took me to a world that certainly was not Middle Earth late 3rd Age.
Ultimately I think the issue is LOTR isn't really a franchise IP in the way Hollywood thinks it is. You have your big Tolkien fans (like yourself) who love all the books and the lore, but the majority of people are casual fans who like the Jackson films and that's basically it. Just slapping "LOTR" onto something isn't really a selling point, especially after both The Hobbit & Rings of Power.
The reason Jackson films were a hit is because of Tolkien fans. The same thing is happening to Star Wars. They keep pushing woke garbage stories on increasingly unwilling people.
beg to differ but "anime" just means cartoon in japanese. as "manga" just means comic in japanese. and a cartoon created by japanese animators at a japanese studio definitely qualifies as anime. there have been a lot of collaborations between west and east that i would definitely consider anime - batman, star wars, the animatrix and now lotr... all bear the work and style of the japanese animators that worked on it.
Well, if they're gonna have more LOTR anime then there better be one anout Thranduil and all the stuff he had gone through prior to "The Hobbit". He was born to be q Bishonenn (?)! Him and Legolas!
Moronic critics like " muh girl boss" distract from what is wrong with this. I don't give a crap if it the lead character has a dck if the movie is still bad.
I really tried to avoid this video with the thumbnail, as a Tolkien nut, I am devastated. I will still see it due to my respect for Peter Jackson, Philippa Boyens and Fran Walsh. But the fact you didn't like it, will most likely mean I won't either 😭
Girl bossing is passé, but much of was is, was decided and funded long ago. Now we must continue to suffer this direction even though it's a dead end - we know it - they know it - but they must try to make that money back. Invest wisely if at all is my only suggestion.
Good thing I went to watch the movie. Film is great and it is a privilege to see this kind of movies in the big screen. You don't have to trash a movie just because is animation.
It just looked boring. I'm all for badass females, fighting amazons, and warrior babes. I'm your guy when it comes to that stuff. Woke it up to the max! But this just looks like a movie that would have been interesting 20 years ago. The Lord of the Rings needs not to seem so unexciting. I think most people expect to see Balrogs, Rocs, and giant fantasy creatures. When I saw this had a lot of _horses_ I just rolled my eyes. Again, I just don't mind the focus on the female I just wish there was more _fantasy_ in this fantasy setting. The Tolkien stuff always hits kind of boring because everything is so rooted in neverending stasis. Stuff doesn't pop off until Sauran tries to kill everybody. There doesn't seem to be much to do for guys or girls in the story until you bring the fantasy creatures into it. The world is just boring. A great read but trying to bring it to life without starting off in a banger place is kind of like shooting yourself in the foot. The owners of this franchise won't let the writers do anything creative, so many strings, so many limitations. This is sorta what you get when you limit your creatives to basically the scraps of your franchise.
I thoroughly enjoyed this film. It was a great time with awesome characters I enjoyed. I’m taking time to better formulate my thoughts, by me initial impression is that Hera is not the typical win every time female many were expecting. Hammerhand is not only a sick fighter, but also an exceptional father.
You tell it as I see it, went in with some level of optimism after the shiate show that was Ring of Powers, but damn was the movie bad. I don't know who wrote the screenplay, but they should be ban ban ban from any future movies! The scene with the little bro getting captured was wtf, like you can't put the CROWN prince on a faster horse or swap with any of the soldiers or have a bunch of royal guards protect him or the Prince running to hide instead of trying to take out 3 guys on his own? And then the scene with Helm sacrificing himself in front of the gates after supermaning the door? Cmon, why not just follow the original story, so f***** frustrating these new age woke Hollywood writers. No more Tolkien screen adaption until the second coming of Peter Jackson.
budget was put towards the background scenes and score...played too loud. horrible dialogue...lifeless characters, and most of the fight scenes were over acted, archers only had one arrow...a piece. its pitch black at night and you could see every overlit actors faces...classic american trash. an insult to be in the same country as any true anime movie.....yet I stayed til the end of the movie to make sure I got the full taste of this foul meal.
It’s disliked because the brainlets in WB took a story based on a very specific character and replaced him with somebody who was only mentioned in passing in the source material.
@alexkogan9755 I think that was a good move tho it added the ability to see past the events of Helm freezing without feeling tacked on. I really feel like people are being to harsh on the film and with time people will get over it and accept its vision and then be able to see it in a new light! It really is a great film worthy of being within the Peter Jackson film verse.
@alexkogan9755 Doesn't really change my feelings on the movie I think what they did hear was nothing short of incredible! The pacing the storytelling all great in my opinion. I don't feel like anything was lost by giving Hera more to do
Couldn’t disagree with you more. I am somebody who is against wokisms affecting lore, gender bending and all those things. There are a few RUclipsrs, like yourself, who are painting a good story badly because you are blinded by your agenda, to stop agenda. Hera is not a girlboss in any way. She is beaten repeatedly by men, has to be saved by her brothers or her father. The only time she is remotely ‘girlboss’ is when she fights Wulf at the end, a boy she trained with her whole young life so knew how he fights. Although some creativity has been used to name the character, nothing in the lore is changed except how Hama dies. Your review is very disingenuous.
@ how isn’t he? He is bold, fierce, powerful and beloved right up until the point Tolkien kills him. Yes you get to see him from somebody else’s eyes but it’s the same as Jaws or Frankenstein or Dracula etc The film is about them but it is more interesting to see it from a different perspective. If you see the film you will see that although it is from her perspective, the story is about Helm and Fraoalf. If you see the film and believe that the perspective of the character with most frame time becomes the ‘star’ then I am not sure film is the right medium for you.
From the perspective of nationality, the animation studio is Japanese and director is Japanese. Plenty of Japanese anime are not made from manga. And plenty anime not made in Japan, even Japan outsources some anime to other countries like Korea and China. As a style, Anime is a definite style of 2D animation that puts less focus on fluid movement but environment detail. Even the most fluid Anime tends to have less than 24fps, usually between 6fps and 12fps. And in Japan, all animated works are anime. Your definition of anime is your own invention and yours alone. It is a word for animation. It isnt that deep, it is obviously anime to anyone with eyes
Yeah… no. In Japanese “anime” just means “animation”. In English, “anime” means animation from Japan. It can be outsourced, obviously (some Western traditionally animated movies had components outsourced to Asia), but that doesn’t suddenly make the story and designs Korean just because a Korean studio got some scenes outsourced to it.
Over 60 different companies did the animation because they were rushing to get it released by the end of the year, before New Line Cinema lost the film rights to Amazon.
@laurapalmer7120 honest question, have you seen it yet? I saw it tonight, maybe a handful of times at most the animation on movement looks clunky. But overall it looks really good
Dude, you are so wrong. All your arguments against this movie are worthless. If you actually believe that "inventing new narratives in the Tolkien world is always bad," or that books as a medium should always be compared to the visual storytelling of a two-hour film, then at the very least, I’d like to hear your suggestions. Also, how is it possible that you see all the flaws here but not in The Lord of the Rings? There are so many narrative "catastrophes" there too: elves at Helm’s Deep, elves with pointy ears, ghosts in the Pelennor Fields. If you’re so quick to point out errors, then please enlighten us with your superior understanding. Your review is probably the worst I’ve seen-everything you say is biased, and it honestly sounds like you’re about to cry. Please don’t speak for all Tolkien fans; you’re not representing anyone.
Please never speak again until you learn how to listen. The guy literally criticized The Return of the King, which most people call great. And if you’re trying to defend the new movie and call the changes in the Peter Jackson movies anything but excellent, then you are both a hypocrite and incapable of basic analysis. Jackson changes a few things for pacing or to give Aragorn a full arc since he has so much screen time, and in one case, the elves fighting at Helm’s Deep, it feels especially useful because it shows the elves actually fighting in the war (and much better than in the Hobbit movies) when you would only get to see that in the appendices. What Jackson didn’t do that this new movie did was take a character that had no name and try to make her the main character while sidelining the real main characters. Even when they added Tauriel in the Hobbit movies, her inclusion didn’t sideline anyone. It made the movies a tad more bloated, but the focus still stayed on the major characters in the book.
Oh wow...The Rings of Power hater didnt got his perfect Lotr Movie..so how about feeling now about Peter Jackson, Phillipa Boyens and Co? Didn't work mmh? Thought they "understand the writing of Tolkien Content" as you stated in your Rop Rants😂
I had a couple issues with it, but overall I found it rather enjoyable. Not enough Helm Hammerhand, questionable appearances by the watcher in the water and the white wizard... really wish they kept closer to the animation style originally teased. I think if you are going into it wanting it to be as good as the OG trilogy, you're setting yourself up for failure. Yes they tweak the lore, but not as much as the OG trilogy, and certainly not as much as rings of power... Below are MY rankings LOTR trilogy 10/10 Hobbit 7/10 Rings of power 2/10 WOTR 8/10. I'd recommend it, but I understand the animation may be a barrier to some.
I wouldnt recommend this film to my worst enemy. Not sure what film you watched. Its a made for tv level anime with awful bland characters a bad guy worse than Kylo Ren and Hera was a joke. 4/10
I can understand liking the movie, but “tweaking” the lore? Did you actually READ the original story? The character Hera was based on was so functionally inconsequential that she didn’t even have a name. While there is obviously room for expansion, the movie’s story is wildly different (barring any other detail shifts) because all the focus is on Hera, who did none of the things in the film.
@@seanmiller5460 you can like it despite its flaws but there are many, including Hera and 'no man can tame me' trope and the ending was just god damn awful and hit every cliche and trope it could have. And this is coming from a massive Tolkien fan.,
@John-fk2ky Again, I found it enjoyable. Nothing will match the OG trilogy (as far as film), but parts of that were gutted to fit the medium as well. They gave Arwen Glorfindel's role in the book, and I thought it worked rather well. After Rings of Power and the Hobbit trilogy, I found this to be a decent entry. I understand the criticism, and agree with a good chunk of it, but it remains (to me) the best of that world committed to screen since the first Hobbit movie.

One Girl Boss to Rule Them All
4:45 you are the best. Please never change!!!
😅 I can't believe they let this happen to another LOTR can we just get great LOTR storys 😢 for the love of god I'm so pissed about this.
Any excuse to cash in on people's nostalgia or a dead writers legacy. You go girl.
I just saw it, it was between it and Kraven though. Nothing good comes out in theatres.
Sonic 3 in two weeks...
Yeah utterly sick of girl boss crap like this, it's a bloody cliche. Great review though James.
Too bad because I would have really liked to experience the Lotr Fan hype that existed when I saw the original trilogy.
Read the books and experience it x 50.
Like star wars: trust in the brand name is dead. Its been dead.
I hear the name: No thanks.
What's next for this treatment? Dune ? Game of thrones?
Would you say this War of the Rohirrim is better or worse than Ralph Bakshi's Lord of the Ring animated film from 1978. Don't forget Excalibur for one of the best 80s fantasy movie.
I thought that Helm Hammerhand was the Tolkien version of One Punch Man.
It was 1 million times better than Amazons Rings of Power
The ironic thing is that the audience they think they're making this for doesn't want it, not at the levels you need to justify the production of a general release (not art house) movie. Still, I would say mission accomplished with The War of the Rohirrim. They needed to get a movie out to keep the rights and this is a movie and at $30 million not too expensive. I had to edit my original comment because Google AI said the production cost was $93million, but that was the average cost of Peter Jackson's original movies.
Need your review of Arcane Season 2 Act 3
Here's my question. Why was this movie made in the first place ?
▶️ 8:46. _" I'm Your Uncle.... _*_ARGILE (!) "_* 🏴 ⚔️ 🏴
Berserk and claymore manga are some fantastic dark fantasy series to get into
Claymore is so good. watched the anime long ago and read the manga. do you know if it's still ongoing?
@@tzzeek it ended in 2014
@@JamesCooper-z2b That's fantastic news. guess i'll get me some beers and snacks this weekend to read the whole thing. Thank you
Berserk isnt whole unfortunately @@tzzeek
LOL the push back on this video is as epic as Gandalf galloping down the hill at the battle of Helm’s deep!
Wow a lot of Rangs of Powa stans in here. Face it nothing has been good since the original trilogy.
Are you gonna review the Bob Dylan biopic?
The funs of Tolken make better movie than Hollywood. Stop woke in Tolken world.
beg to differ but "anime" just means cartoon in japanese. as "manga" just means comic in japanese. and a cartoon created by japanese animators at a japanese studio definitely qualifies as anime. there have been a lot of collaborations between west and east that i would definitely consider anime - batman, star wars, the animatrix and now lotr... all bear the work and style of the japanese animators that worked on it.
i really loved this film! I went and saw it 4 times. It was beautiful!
Man i wanted to like the movie :(
I knew it. It was only made to keep the rights to LOTR.
Well, if they're gonna have more LOTR anime then there better be one anout Thranduil and all the stuff he had gone through prior to "The Hobbit". He was born to be q Bishonenn (?)! Him and Legolas!
yeah sadly it wasn't great and Hera was just a bad and bland character suffering from the "no man can tame her!" trope.
Honestly to me the Lord of the Rings franchise is three phenomenal movies and Middle Earth Shadow of Mordor, that’s it.
They always do though don't they? When they have a franchise they will not give up on it even when it's exhausted
People are fed up of Boss girl movies. Enough Hollywood, just stop.
Moronic critics like " muh girl boss" distract from what is wrong with this. I don't give a crap if it the lead character has a dck if the movie is still bad.
and this film is sadly one of the worst girl boss tropes I've seen.
So sick of girl boss bull shit
@@purefoldnz3070it’s not the worse, it just fails to break the mold.
Amazon’s Rings of power and wheel of time are far worse
Wicked is sure raking it in with 2 Girl bosses in the movie.
I really tried to avoid this video with the thumbnail, as a Tolkien nut, I am devastated. I will still see it due to my respect for Peter Jackson, Philippa Boyens and Fran Walsh. But the fact you didn't like it, will most likely mean I won't either 😭
Why respect them PJ was only added for clout and the daughter got the writing job due to nrpotism. Its trash.
@hammerofscience534 why respect those three I mentioned? Do I need to tell you?
Girl bossing is passé, but much of was is, was decided and funded long ago. Now we must continue to suffer this direction even though it's a dead end - we know it - they know it - but they must try to make that money back. Invest wisely if at all is my only suggestion.
It wasn't that long ago. Two years. They are still pushing this nonsense, so until they run out of money, I guess we keep seeing this.
Good thing I went to watch the movie. Film is great and it is a privilege to see this kind of movies in the big screen. You don't have to trash a movie just because is animation.
The movie trashes itself.
Agreed!
It was complete garbage. Made for the non existent modern audience. Why do you think its not making a dime?
So this was a placeholder like Corman's Fantastic Four movie.
Well ill probably still check this out though this is some sad news.
You and nerdrotic are spot on waste of money and time just watch lord of the rings instead
Ugh! I was afraid it would blow😢...
Guess I'll just listen to my audio book of Joe Biden reading the Silmarilion😬
go watch it
I thoroughly enjoyed this film. It was a great time with awesome characters I enjoyed. I’m taking time to better formulate my thoughts, by me initial impression is that Hera is not the typical win every time female many were expecting. Hammerhand is not only a sick fighter, but also an exceptional father.
Seeing it tomorrow. Better than Kraven I bet.
Is that supposed to be an achievement?
I thought the movie was ok. I’d give it a decent 7/10 but I am honestly tired of Hollywood focusing so much on women rolls when it’s not needed
Ridley Scott's Legend has awesome atmosphere
War of the Wokehirrim..👎👎
budget was put towards the background scenes and score...played too loud. horrible dialogue...lifeless characters, and most of the fight scenes were over acted, archers only had one arrow...a piece. its pitch black at night and you could see every overlit actors faces...classic american trash. an insult to be in the same country as any true anime movie.....yet I stayed til the end of the movie to make sure I got the full taste of this foul meal.
Ive never heard anyone pronounce anime like that, have i been saying it worng all thos time
they girl bossed too close to the sun.
I dont want to see a girlboss of any kind as long as I live. I just have had enough of them.
Really upsetting how films like this are allowed to be made… where is all the talent? Depressing time for entertainment.
It was a solid 9/10 for me. My friend and I loved it and are surprised to see it being disliked it was so well paced!
@@Magicman1625 Except Jackson tried to do that with Arwen and reversed course when he realized that was a bad idea. WB did not get the memo.
@alexkogan9755 Doesn't really change my feelings on the movie I think what they did hear was nothing short of incredible! The pacing the storytelling all great in my opinion. I don't feel like anything was lost by giving Hera more to do
Same here! I absolutely loved it! Found it compelling to watch from beginning to end.
I mean I enjoyed it for what it was
This just looked like the worst possible scenario from the trailer.
Gaia - Rhea - Hera
Cheers.
WB will cease to exist after Superman releases.
A movie so bad it’s red pilling Grace Randolph.
How about Helm not even being the main character?
@ how isn’t he? He is bold, fierce, powerful and beloved right up until the point Tolkien kills him. Yes you get to see him from somebody else’s eyes but it’s the same as Jaws or Frankenstein or Dracula etc The film is about them but it is more interesting to see it from a different perspective. If you see the film you will see that although it is from her perspective, the story is about Helm and Fraoalf. If you see the film and believe that the perspective of the character with most frame time becomes the ‘star’ then I am not sure film is the right medium for you.
to bad i realy was looking forward to it
Then change the title to War of Hera jeez😂
based
Dammit! So much mixed opinions on the movie... Now I have to watch it
its not good, just wait for streaming.
I knew it was trash the moment they were going to focus on Helms daughter instead of Helm and his sons. Utter feminist dogwater
The original trilogy was so painfully boring. Good god I thought it would never end
I love those films. Most people do. But what does that have to do with this pile of garbage?
This should have been another animated classic like Hobbit. Unfortunately it’s a masculine female slop, like Rings of Power
Describing RotK as a deeply flawed movie is insane.
I agree it was by far the worst of the three. Having the dead arrive at Pelanor was shocking. I gave it a 6/10.
So Castlevania and blood of zues aren't anime... I'm sorry but that's a dumb opinion 😂
What a boring take, also the animation is beautiful, bad animation is a wild take.
But overall it looks really good
This movie was pretty good. If you are a LOTR fan and book fan, you'll have fun. Don't listen to this guy
Consume product, get ready for next product!
Calm down
Here's a suggestion.... Follow the fucking source material! There are only thousands of pages to pull from, you are not a better writer than Tolkien.
He literally said the trotk was wildly uneven. And stop being so defensive, it's called an opinion. You're not defending your sports team.
This was written by the daughter the old crew was just named dropped for clout.
Who gives a f? You don't have to take sides like a sports team. Man this new wave of geek weebs is so defensive and angry.
Below are MY rankings
LOTR trilogy 10/10
Hobbit 7/10
Rings of power 2/10
WOTR 8/10.
I'd recommend it, but I understand the animation may be a barrier to some.
I wouldnt recommend this film to my worst enemy. Not sure what film you watched. Its a made for tv level anime with awful bland characters a bad guy worse than Kylo Ren and Hera was a joke. 4/10
@purefoldnz3070 I have my opinion you have yours. It's not going to be for everybody, but I liked it.
I understand the criticism, and agree with a good chunk of it, but it remains (to me) the best of that world committed to screen since the first Hobbit movie.
ruclips.net/p/PLqWW6clWCdYPMy3Fvcm3AK48Cx8ohxCKp&si=gIStmCGgNkOwrZR7 everybody this guy has been saying this since 2018 he will explain why all these rings of power and why this new movie is bad and why it’s bad from writing to directing to story plot
Nerdorotic is just another grifter wanting to take us back to 1978 and taking advantage of youtube for hate hits. I agree with what he says about trop but his bias is obvious as he hates everything.
