The Middle Ages spanned roughly from the 5th to the 15th century, emerging from the ashes of the fallen Roman Empire. During this time, a unique class of warrior emerged that would come to define medieval society and capture imaginations for centuries to come - the knight.
Knights began as mounted warriors serving feudal lords, but they evolved into much more than simple soldiers. They were members of a distinct social class who lived by a complex code of chivalry that demanded courage, honor, courtesy, and protection of the weak. A knight's training began early, often around age seven, when young boys of noble birth would be sent to serve as pages in another lord's household. They would learn basic military skills, horsemanship, and proper courtly behavior.
By their early teens, these young men would become squires, directly serving a knight and learning the arts of warfare. They would help their knight don armor, care for weapons and horses, and accompany them into battle. This apprenticeship period was crucial, as the skills required to fight effectively in heavy armor while mounted required years of practice to master.
The process of becoming a knight culminated in the ceremony of knighthood, typically occurring around age 21. The ritual often involved a night of prayer and fasting, followed by the dubbing ceremony where the candidate would kneel before his lord to receive the accolade - a tap on each shoulder with a sword. This sacred ritual transformed the squire into a knight, binding him to the ideals of chivalry and service.
A knight's equipment was extraordinarily expensive, requiring significant wealth to maintain. A full suit of plate armor could cost as much as a small manor house. The knight's primary weapon, the lance, was used in conjunction with powerful warhorses bred specifically for combat. These horses, known as destriers, were themselves valuable assets that required extensive training and care.
Knights played a crucial role in medieval warfare, serving as heavy cavalry that could break enemy formations with devastating charge attacks. However, their effectiveness began to decline with the advent of new military technologies, particularly the English longbow and improved pike formations, which proved capable of defeating mounted knights on the battlefield.
Beyond warfare, knights were central figures in medieval culture and literature. The stories of King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table, the tales of Roland, and countless other romances celebrated knightly virtues and adventures. These stories helped establish the knight as a cultural ideal - the perfect combination of warrior prowess and courtly refinement.
Medieval tournaments provided knights with opportunities to demonstrate their skills in peacetime, competing in events like jousting and melee combat. These tournaments were grand social occasions that combined martial competition with pageantry and courtly romance. Knights would often fight wearing their lady's favors, linking martial prowess with courtly love.
The influence of knights extended beyond the military sphere into medieval governance and justice. Knights often served as administrators of their lords' estates, dispensed justice in local courts, and participated in royal councils. Their oath-bound status and adherence to the chivalric code made them trusted agents of medieval authority.
As the Middle Ages drew to a close, the role of knights gradually diminished. Gunpowder weapons and professional standing armies made their style of warfare obsolete, while changing social structures eroded their privileged position in society. However, their legacy endured through the ideals of chivalry and the cultural imagination, influencing everything from military traditions to modern concepts of gentlemanly behavior.
The knight remains one of the most evocative symbols of medieval society, representing a unique combination of military power, social privilege, and moral idealism. Though their time has passed, their impact on Western culture and imagination continues to resonate, making them an enduring emblem of the Middle Ages.

It was cute of you, too, assume anything less than a 20 min react video, sir. ❤
To answer your question: yes, enemies can lose morale and flee in KCD, it happens more often if you are killing many opponents in a single fight and with the right perks.
Your video 'seek' bar overlapping with mine was making me crazy. :P
Moral of the story, if your a peasant levy turned brigand deserter looking for an easy mark DON'T f*ck with the knight's horse while he is out riding unless you outnumber him 100 to 1.
"He hit the horse, that's a big target, we don't know how good a shot he is"
If he were a good shot, he probably wouldn't have hit the horse ;)
Just accidentally microwaved a fork thank you Metatron for distracting me.
Same.
I bet it was pretty though
Lol
How did it taste?
Haha, I've done that before and I am lucky no sparks started.

Fuckin nice😂😂
Just epic 😂.
hahahahahahahaha
These were highwaymen, and one of them was stupid enough to shoot the knight's horse out from under him
Yep, likely peasant militia gone brigand based on the conversations.
Stupid for killing a horse worth a fortune? Or stupid for pissing off a knight? Maybe both?
Both, he aimed at the steward and hit the horse ...

These people should make a movie. First time I’ve seen a well color-graded action video without shaky cam in this century.
Apparently they want to.
Shaky cam - Ugh! To think they developed software that makes the image float around on the TV screen in random ways to elicit engagement shows how low the cinematic form has fallen.
The 15th century?
Oh my friend I have something for you! Even WITH shaky cam a historical swordfight can be SO much better than what Hollywood can produce: /watch?v=HwHNzL9-zpg&ab_channel=AdoreaOlomouc
When I found this channel awhile back, I watched every single video. I was just blown away by the visuals. So many just visually stunning scenes.
The crossbow was really jammed. It was not scripted.
Did you try turning it off and on again? 😅
To be fair, in both videos it did end up jammed.
Was it.... Raspberry?
@@trathanstargazer6421 It was by the end of it. xD
Probably said, “PC Load Letter” on the stock.
I think a lot of people seriously underestimate how scary a cavalry charge would be. I was working outside a couple weeks ago and suddenly heard some kind of rumbling noise and i immediately came up on full alert to figure out what the heck it was. And thats when a group of 8-10 elk running came into view.
That immediately gave me a much better understanding. The loud rumbling sound of just a handful of those was enough to bring me immediately to alert. Increase that number to 300... 400.. it would be insane. The earth would be shaking on top of the rumbling on top of the lances pointed at you... yeah its not easy to stand your ground.
Today - No Spartan Dies!
To put into a modern context.
A small riding horse that a present merchant would ride in the mid-evil period would be the equivalent to a $60000-$70000 car. The horses most nobles would ride daily are equal to a $100000-$150000 sports car. And a war horse is a $250000+ super car. The Knight is justifiably pissed.
Ever heard that horses reproduce and cars not? regular horse is at best $3000 to $5000.
@@Kibernautas
Plus the training, good food, caring,it all ads cost
@@georgecristiancripcia4819 peasants knew how to train working horse, plus they need little more than grass or hay. When you travel you just graze horse on any pach of grass
@Kibernautas That's the price for an average horse. The price for some purebreds can go up to 100k. While some notable horses can be worth millions, and earn millions more in stud fees.
@supremecaffeine2633 horses have a habbit to fuck and produce more horses in process. If you are not a king and not going for 0.001% of best, they do not cost that much. Average Knight not going to have a Bugati of a horse he is going to have turbocharged Ford equivalent, which is at most 3 to 5% of a price.
5:35 It's a man catcher and he seemed to be trying to tip the knight over. Also, these are brigands or theives and probably got their armor and weapons through unscrupulous means.
I think it would make sense that maybe the brigands have some military experience. Maybe now they just want to get their own through thievery or want to start a mercenary band.
The only real criticism on the fight is that the brigands should have rushed the knight. They did another video where they did this and the knight lost. Presumably here they were inexperienced or just scared.
I found this channel recently and it's amazing.
The little chat and introduction before the fight make it much more powerful. Plated knights must have been a force to reckon with for regular untrained people like modern tanks nowadays.
Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 can't come faster.
On an armoured charger the comparison is pretty accurate.
Six minutes reaction video? Sure, Metatron, sure... Hahahaha
🤣
One of the bandits are using a man catcher (the polearm with hooks at the end). I'm kind of surprised you haven't heard of it since it was used to immobilize a man at arms to disarm him and possibly to take him a prisoner for ransom. Shadiversity has a video on it.
The peasants biggest mistake was allowing the knight to remain standing IMO. They could've kept pushing with that while distracting him with feints until he tripped.
Yeah, that surprised me a bit as well. They clearly caught him at one point but weren't able to bring him down.
Might also be that those replicas aren't accurate enough because that would be too dangerous?
@kaltaron1284 I was the same. Once they had him hooked up I thought they would get him down. But hey I am sitting behind a keyboard and not fighting for my life lol
@kaltaron1284 It's not like he didn't try, you can clearly see the flex in the shaft.
But it's a man using only the arm strenght (can't really put your weight into it without loosing the mobility keeping you alive from the knight) on a flexible point of leverage (head and torso can mitigate a lot) on a big knight with armour on (not sure on his, but mine adds about 20kg).
maybe had it lasted more than 30seconds he could have done it.
@@lo95cdex Yeah. Another point is that the spikes of the man catcher couldn't do their work because of the full helmet.
A real man catcher should have been more difficult to get rid off though. Well, at least some models where the circle is narrower and the hooks more pronounced..
The way this was shot from the perspective of the peasants really emphasized the reality of the fear and imbalance in this situation. I never really considered how terrifying it would be to be slowly ambushed by trained killer in full plate-until now.
Now I want to see a Michael Myers type shot, a perspective from inside the visor as a knight just reaps through enemies.
they do call themselves brigands
so likely deserters who took up highway robbery and maybe the unarmored one was a thief or exile of some sort who joined them
Damn....theres no word to describe that other than just brutal. Straight up brutal. The geniune fear the company showed, the way the Knight looks like an unstoppable juggernaught, and the tension as he just goes to town with the mace is stellar, and has more emotional weight than any medieval movie hollywood has come up with.
and all this is fake as hell
It does nothing to increase run time saving some writer from spewing more nonsense. :P I'll take it.
his acting skills are very good the way he hits the guy at the end almost feels like he is taking revenge for the horse
The battle of the golden spurs is one of those rare battles where craftsmen were able to defeat a knights army.
There were never any knights, its a King's fever dream.
@@NickPointNClick He means an armored cavalry force against peasants.
Battle of Vitkov hill comes to mind as another example, I mean, basically the whole of Hussite wars.
They won with bats that had spikes on the end😂😂
What's crazy is that the French infantry almost won the battle, but the French nobility called them back in order to have a cool cavalry charge themselves.
They ended up in the mud, getting clubbed and stabbed, the lines held.
The battle annihilated a sizeable part of the French nobility, but was short lived.
I got the impression they were outlaws. 1 of them was comparing being a peasant to being a brigand.
As the video is called "Brigands", I call that a fair guess.
@kaltaron1284 It's not, it's called Peasants Vs Knight.
@@marvhollingworth663 My mistake. That's only the thumbnail.
They made a second video with these same guys as a RUclips Short called "How to Kill a Knight". It has a different outcome since there are 4 skilled brigands against a single knight.
they stated the first run was the 2nd video, due to the knight holding back compared to this video where the knight wins.
This
@@josephdedrick9337 After watching it, seems to me more that the brigands are holding back in THIS video. If they are aggressive enough and have at least some skill, 4 guys will absolutely bring down 1 in melee, no matter how much armor he has. In this one they mostly hold back and it's at most 2v1 at any point. In the other one, they all rush him.
@@goodoldgrim too bad you were not there to teach skilled harnischfechters to fight. Dequitem himself is one of the peasants. He knows how to fight, but obviously you know more, perhaps go and teach him?

Reminds me of getting jumped in full plate in kingdom come deliverance 😂
imho best moment in the game was getting jumped by 7 angry peasants while I was wearing one of the best full plates in the game: I felt like a living tank xD
The peasants may also represent brigands since it opens with the crossbowman shooting the "sherif's" horse. Everything they have could "found" or stolen gear.
My thoughts on seeing the common coloring of their clothes (red and blue) was that they were likely deserters turned brigands, or maybe levies or men-at-arms whose lord was killed and they were left to fend for themselves through banditry.
They call themselves Brigands at 1:43
All the peasant fans "I would just..."
Those who know- "you wouldn't"
I would just... run. Knight's horse is dead, he wouldn't able to keep running for long.
Sorry sire the hoof it like never before
What if the peasants walked into the water waiting for the knight so they could tag team him into drowning or be safe.
#6:48 taking the version about them camping on the enemy territory it may have been the reason the guy has a breastplate actually- it could be a war loot from some action before this one, and so the term "peasants" takes a whole new level here because they could be actually working as some militia recruits just to hold off the enemies and make some kind of disorganisation within the region. Thats just a suggestion of course because what really happened there- we quite not know.

Finally you respond to this awesome video.
Thanks Metatron, appreciate your work.
It is the calmness and simplicity of this movie that makes it so special.
A lack of music contributes as much to the video as the quiet knight. In hollywood the knight would have had some badass lines, but here: the time for talking is over. He is pissed and wants vengeance. No need to treat these peasants like humanbeings anymore.
I really like the knights lack of overly flashy moves since he needs none. He is in armor, he doesn't need to dodge or block that much if it brings him into a superior position to kill the opponent.
Big applause for the mancatcher, you never see those in movies🖤⚔️
Really, a good video
To be fair about the helmet, they're supposed to be a company of peasant brigands. They aren't deserters
Thank you for discovering this incredible channel for me! Love the fight scenes
Let's fucking go!! I was hoping you'd watch this!!
I try to imagine it in a modern context, if I was standing with three buddies in my home with some defense equipment (baseball bats, maybe a shotgun or handgun), but knew that a special forces operator was going to home invade me at night, with nightvision, explosives, all of his training and expertise, explosives, entry tactics etc...
I would be scared as hell.
I can't imagine how it must have felt for men with a walking armored tank approaching you... I think their only chance was for two to 'attempt' to tackle and down him and go for daggers in the nooks and crevices.
This would be more like you and your buddies trying to carjack a Special Forces guy in full battle rattle.
Ye special forces would go full "violence of action" knocking that they are dealing with average joes.
Worse than the described scenario since with firearms vs ballistic protection, there is far less coverage area as compared to plate armor for the knight. In addition, your home would afford you some tactical advantage as you are familiar with the layout. Try being placed in the middle of the woods instead.
@@r2020E Only in movies, a special forces operator attacks the building itself, where there is a group of opponents, no one plans such an action. There were cases of a small unit of commandos vs. random surprised opponents, but it was always the result of some error in planning the action, bad intelligence information, etc. No one will take that risk by choice. My friend is in the territorial army and they were doing exercises in the building against such elite operators. Result? The professionals won, but with losses that were unacceptable in a normal situation. There was a funny situation recently in my country. There was a suspicion that the politician accused of corruption was hiding in the monastery. A group of heavily armed police was sent there, with drones to observe the area, etc. People were surprised: all this against one politician and a group of monks? But that's how you plan such actions.
It would be more equivalent to some futuristic vision of a soldier in a fully covering exoskeleton. The armor of today offers very little protection from the weapons of today when you compare with the late middle ages.
What I absolutely love about this video - people, surprise surprise, aren't some sort of superheroes. Being hit with a weapon hurts, and being hit with a mace hurts like hell. Usually actors taking 2 seconds pause to show badly wounded they are, and jump to run or fight like nothing happened, and they have regenerated already.
love the way the knight choose his target
take down the lowest armored one first, then the guy on the edge to make sure they cant encircle him.
I hope you reacting to Dequitem is becoming a new normal on your channel!
Basically when you're playing Kenshi decked out in full good quality heavy armor, and a few good powerful weapons and you run into a small band of enemies. xD
10 kids? That knight did his future wife a favor.
Relatively normal numbers for the time. You have to remember that more than likely less then half survive their first few years.
My grandmother was from 9 kids. It was common in middle Europe villages in pre 1950 era. Nowadays it's "weird" to have 3. Usual number in city is 1-2. Except gypsies, the have usually 6+. 8 would be gaussian middle.
this may surprise you but normally women actually enjoy having children
More real and visceral than anything Hollywood could ever produce.
No fake blood and stupid gore even needed!
Glad you found their channel man, was putting it in the comments for months haha.
5:20 The peasant is using a Mancatcher or Catch Pole (I'm assuming Metatron and most of the viewer-base knows this) but using it against a heavily-armored target is exactly the reason WHY you would have it on hand. When the user snared the knight, he was able to leverage his own force over the neck of the knight and keep him restrained for a bit. It only works for a short bit in the video because real mancatchers would have 4-6 inch spikes in the snare that would pierce an aventail, skin or just get stuck in mail. If you had more help from able-bodied soldiers, a mancatcher can keep a heavily-armored target in one place while everyone else gangs up on them.

Love the realistic sized mace.
Make an 8-minute reaction video IMPOSSIBLE😂.
Calculation from my experience watching this channel since May 2024 is that 1 minute of video equals a 4-minute pedantic reaction following the equation below:
y=x+P⋅x+t=4
y, y total reaction video length (minutes)
𝑥, x: original video length (minutes)
𝑃, P: pedantic factor (e.g., how much additional time is spent per minute of the original video due to detailed explanations)
𝑡, t: fixed overhead time (e.g., intro/outro, setup time)
This equation reflects both the base reaction time and additional time due to pedantic commentary.
I have not done math since the mid-90s, so I might be wrong. Feel free to correct me, but please do it in a very pedantic way. 🙂
Ridiculous. The MUCH faster peasants wait for the heavy armor to bludgeon them, instead of just running 100 feet and forcing the knight to tire, enter rough terrain, or give up.
They moved like janitors emptying paper bins, basically begging to be stricken down. - In a addition to the speed and numbers advantage, they'd have SOME tactical awareness. They could easily take out the knight with rope...
this is why knights had so much respect

It feels like the peasants may not be the original owners of their gear? Perhaps they took it from travelers they may have ambushed with that crossbow? Would explain the inconsistency of their gear? Great video!
Honestly, I feel like if the four just rushed him and held him down, it would be fine. But hey, Im not there.
That's why the knight also rushes them one after another. It also seemed like some of their camp stuff was in the way at times. So good positioning by the knight against an uncoordinated and inexperienced group negated their numbers.
In the comment under the video they state that the brigands actually won the first bout because the knight was holding back and they managed to rush him.
@kaltaron1284 and also this is one of bullshit movie tropes, 4 guys wait politely to attack one by one, not all at once, which would be game over for a knight.

THey had carefully painted on wood grain and wear on the wood, and the axe blade too also had paint and wear painted on.

I think the thing you mean here is a mancatcher, which, as the Name implies, was used to catch people.
It's kind of a wide, two pronged fork, with an additional curved part, that can somewhat rotate, at the tip of each prong. It's not a weapon per se, but was, as far as I understand, more for control: you try to catch a person around the waist/torso, or preferably the neck. The parts at the tip of each prong would catch on the body and rotate inwards, like closing doors, locking the person in. From what I've seen, some had the inside lined with spikes. So now you have the Person locked in that "collar", which they can't easily slip out of, possibly lined with sharp spikes, that press into you, if you get to close to them, and the "collar" is connected to a long pole, which can be used as a lever, but also keeps the caught person away from you.
I think in some places, they're still used today by the police.
I hope my explanation is somewhat understandable.
This was one of several epic takes this group did🎉
Awesome ❤❤❤, so good I subscribed.
This is just a normal day in early 15th century Bohemia, where a local village man terrorizes the countryside while drunk on spirits and murmuring, "I am feeling quite hungry."
Since they were several against one, wouldn't the best tactic be to someone with the spear poke him from a distance and as soon as he turns to fight the spearman, someone else grab the knight from behind, immobilizing the arms so others can come from the front and stab with a dagger or sword below the helmet?
I would imagine some tactic capable of immobilizing the knight would be the best, including maybe some big net (retiarius gladiator style? Bigger?), or ropes, whatever. He is a tank in terms of protection, but still doesn't have the strength of a tank, so can be immobilized by other men or ropes, or slowed by nets.
Reminds me of the ropes in the ATAT legs in the Empire Strikes Back.
Any literature on this subject, @metatron?
The problem was the pole arm at the start. The knight had just as much reach as the assailants and two were down before the knight lost the pole arm. So only two people were left to take a fully resisting, trained knight down to the ground. If the knight wouldn't have had a pole arm, the brigands could have used their superior reach to bring him down to the ground to use a dagger on him.
I subbed to dequitem a few months after randomly stumbling on his shorts. This was easily my favirite fight rhat hes done, and cool taht he released a video later showing a version where the brigands win.

To be fair, there has been farming uprising against knights and professional armies. Where the farmers won. Denmark for example had 3.
As a Napoleonic Re-enactor, I've stood in front of a 20 horse charge where I knew they would turn away. It was still scarey, I mean really. I could feel the weight of the horse, the ground was trembling underfoot and they came so quickly. They were just so-big, so-wide too. I' couldn't dodge to the side because there were people in the way and the line of horses was wider than I could run anyway. I know why people wouldn't stand a charge.
Realistically, they should have run... You can never catch up with them in full plate.

Supporting what you said about the British longbowmen finding defensive terrain to face French knights, there is the much less famous - although arguably more decisive - battle of Patay later on in the 100 years war, where the British army and their longbowmen got caught in the open by the French cavalry. It was a massacre and depleted the Birtish reserve of skilled archers.
Strangely enough when it comes to outrunning people in armour, It's usually the heavy (steel plate/mail etc) armour users in the LARPS I have attended that can keep going for longer and tend to run faster. Being used to the weight etc makes all the difference and really boosts fitness level.
being able to conpensate for added weight does not make you faster than someone with no added weight.
@@Kibernautas more the general fitness level required. If you are used to it then you will be fitter, and likely able to outrun a lot of people. Much like a knight who trains and is in peak shape vs enlisted and equipped peasants.
@jeagerblackpaw2922 and peasants would have had many years of hard farm work, so would be physically fit also.

Just a little note: the weapon of one of the brigands wasn't a sword. It was a long knife (at least that's what it's called in german) which only has one edge and was used more frequently by lower class fighters since swords were a symbol of nobility.

I have noticed some misconceptions in this comment section. Many people here really think that medieval peasants were mal-equipted pushovers. They have these Hollywood movies in mind where people in tunics and hoods beat armored knights with valor and numbers.
You have to realise some things about medieval europe:
People werent free. Most of them were part of a land and therefor protected by their lord. but they had certain responsibilities. One of those were to pick men for a levy. Meaning the people who got chosen for a levy werent just random villagers. those were men who already trained beforehand AND who got equiptment by their community. A helmet was a must. Padded cloth and poorly fitted armor was also totally aquirable for them, or they got those from their lord.
A medievall city was on a totally different level. they could affort to kit out many more fighters who also trained relatively reguarly (meaning once a week at least). It was a citizens duty to fight for the city. Many german cities invented competitions for their citizens. Like Crossbow shooting, or sparing with kit and formational combat. They were NOT untrained noobs.
But Lets be real here: such a levy peasant still had NO chance against a knight. Knights were highly tuned sports experts and absolute *machines.* But even a machine in full plate has issues when fighting several men trained to fight. The biggest advantage of the Knight was his horse. Knights are primarily heavy shock cavalry.
So if you imagine a "peasant militia" fighting a knightly army, dont imagine them like Hollywood does it, imagine them moderately trained, with a lot of Helmets, moderately well made armor in the higher ranks and even really good armor with the richest and plenty of different weapons too.
In the 15th century there is a document of the city of frankfurth ordering !700! Handcannons for their militia! They could totally affort to kit them out.
And those who WERENT able to affort that usually had not that much to fear. because as unfree peasants they werent expected to be killed in a raid. Raids were primarily there to demage economy and logistics. Killing the peasantry will lead to serious feuds and why would you want to kill the peasant you want as a future worker?
Ofc there are plenty exceptions from that rule, but 99% of all medieval warfare was not the big wars fought with armies, but small feuds with only a couple hundret combatants.
I have to say metatron, if you like medieval combat and weapon styles. I have to highly recommend a game called half sword it's in playtest right now there's also a demo out. The play test has you go through a whole list of different types of armaments and armor playing against the computer in many different ways. The demo is you wake up in a dark place with absolutely nothing and you run around in spoilance of things. attempt to find the weaponry you need to go through the level until you are either beating or you win. It's the level of gruesomeness and the level of weapon usage. how it's used and how you can use it so freely is why I think you would enjoy this.
I did a short called Come Back Home (It's on RUclips) where I was wearing plate and dealt with several unarmored assailants. My primary attacker would not attack me honestly. I was trying to convince him that he could not hurt me with his blunt sword. I tried so hard to help him be the aggressor, alas he would not take an honest swing
Disregarding wanting padding underneath your metal helmet, the setting is a snowy cold. Surely you at least would want to wear a warm hat? Maybe some gants or gloves too.
Dude, it made me realize knights weren’t just some dude with a sword. They were tanks that chopped at you.
This was really cool. I love things like this.
Disney should be ashamed when they see this, but they don't care about quality anymore. Here's hoping guys like these can start their own companies and start making movies.
