Conjuring 1 felt a little creepy as I watched it with my best friend over the phone, in my basement alone in the dark. The phone disconnected when the B was in the wall doing her demon thing. That was a bit uncool to say the least lol. As far as true unease, maybe Heredity when it hits right, depending on who you are with and how your feeling. Even Pet Cemetary remake to me had some moments.

I threw on Caveat one night because the cover of it on Shudder looked so funny, so I thought it would just be a bad horror movie that could be fun to watch and crack jokes and MST3k it. oof, by the end I was wrapped head to toe in a blanket and watching it through my fingers. I couldn’t believe a movie actually scared me. So i’ve been dying to see oddity for months. I was already excited, but now even more so based on your review, and because I had no idea it was playing in theatres! i hope this movie is so scary it makes me cry lol. I think the last few movies that have actually scared me are When Evil Lurks, Caveat, and Possom. (and of course Martyrs forever)
Glad I could help put the movie on the radar of horror fans. The theatrical release is going to be limited so it needs all the word of mouth it can get.
It's good to hear that there is a hair raising horror movie out there. The last film that made my hair raise was the Korean film, "The Wailing." I am looking forward to this one.
I just watched it last night. I swear it's premeditated to only have one time slot in theaters and it's late at night! 🤣 It was very intense, creepy, and as your title says, "petrifying." I love how it messed with my head when I lied down that night and that scene towards the end and the dude's foot 😅
Thanks brother I haven't even heard of this one and your enthusiasm has rubbed off on me! I like the anecdote about the argument in the cinema, I've been there, foul mood at some sort of arts event but then the art is so good it gets you past it!
Glad to hear I've put it on your radar. The trailer for the movie is pretty cool but doesn't come anywhere close to capturing the dread of the finished film.
I watched this at my local AMC last night and absolutely loved it! Easily my favorite horror movie of 2024, atm. Great creepy atmosphere throughout👍🏻 This film actually gave me the creeps, which is pretty rare nowadays. I will definitely be buying Oddity when it comes to home video. I'm sure there was some creepy shit I missed hidden within the dark corners of the frame😆
The tent reveal shot prompted what might have been the loudest scream of terror I've ever heard in a theatre crowd, from a poor young woman who was completely rattled. The build up of tension and dread to that moment was masterful.
You may have oversold this movie - but thanks to your video I will stay away from the trailer, and look forward to checking out on the big screen. As a fellow cinephile, I used to live for those dread inducing flicks, but I’ve given up on them to be honest. The last time I actually felt it was in a couple of scenes from Hereditary and 2007‘s French extremity flick ‘Inside’. So I’m really looking forward to this. Thanks as always!
@@geekinwithJamesHancock so even overall better than Dune Part 2? So while that’s still my top pick for best 2024 movie, several horror flicks this year have been great stuff as well. Love the early praise this is getting though as well.
Phones blinking off in the movie theatre. We've all been there James lmao. Great to hear the horror craft is still alive and well in the film medium. I can also attest that it's still very much alive and well in gaming as well having just played Still Wakes the Deep.
Dude, you were so right. This movie was so unsettling. The sound design was amazing i wanted it to end, hated being in that castle like house. Carolyn Bracken needs to win something for her performance
Thank you for your recommendation. Just finished the film. It was awesome and scary. Great movie. For awhile I was thinking this could win Best Original ScreenPlay and have Carolyn Brackert up for a Best actress Oscar. I guessed in the middle the ending, and that doesn't sit well with me after sleeping. It was a Theory like I wonder if the X character is involved? The movie continued to subvert my expectations to the very end, but I was hoping for some other conclusion personally. I didn't want it to be as simple of a conclusion as it was. Great Payoffs throughout the movie and incredible cinematography and pacing. Highly recommend.
Oddity is an instant horror classic, in my opinion. It delivers on all fronts. My definition of a good horror film is one that lingers in your mind long after the credits have rolled; continuing to haunt and unsettle you. This film does exactly that. The story itself is so strong and tightly-structured (and as tense as a coiled spring); the atmospherics palpable, and the actors all utterly inhabit their characters (I am in awe of Carolyn Bracken especially, though). The visual signatures of this film are so powerful, also, that they've already taken on the indelible quality of a time-honoured classic: That image of Danny in her ominous red sweater, with the beacon-like tent illuminating the stark bricks of the wall behind her; the bedraggled, one-eyed stranger peering in through the hatch; the albino-esque figure of Darcy, with her white hair, white clothing, and staring, milky-blue eyes; and, of course, the hideous wooden mannequin sitting at the table with its face fixed in a silent scream. Amazing. Damian McCarthy has shown how really good horror can and should be done. Can't wait to see more from him, but, in the meantime, I will keep returning to this film to appraise and appreciate it afresh!
Thank you so much for bring this to my attention. I can't wait to watch it. Keep up the passion man. Totally side note James, just a recommendation: There is this upcoming polish indie game called Holstin, a psychological survival horror game set in an eerie, isolated 90's Polish town consumed by an ominous presence. I think it's a game to keep on the radar. xD
I've got it ready to rock on Amazon but I'm going to make myself wait 24 hours before watching it. I worry that my body's fight or flight instinct has been totally exhausted by 'Oddity'.
Saw it on Thursday and it was awesome. I think the lighting is where the dread came from. It was so low in the horrible barn house that I was always looking behind the characters thinking I was seeing something. I'm so glad Shudder is releasing their movies in the theater as opposed to just putting them directly on Shudder. Last Night With The Devil and I think In A Violent Nature are both Shudder films as well that got theatrical releases. Oddity has a short run where I live. I'm pretty sure it's only gonna be out 1 week. My AMC had 2 showings on Thursday but I think every other day is just 1. I haven't seen Caveat but I'm so glad I watched the trailer before I saw Oddity. There was a nice little Easter Egg that made an appearance. In Caveat there is this creepy looking Energizer Bunny that plays a drum. It has what appears to be human eyes which makes it quite menacing. There is a pan shot in the Oddity store of knick knacks on shelves and u can very clearly see that evil ass bunny staring straight ahead. I had my only chuckle seeing it. Every shot mattered and was critical to the plot. One such detail was the several times a patient in the mental institution was seen with a muzzle like contraption on. He played an important part in the end of one character. That was so well done. I had no problem with the ending. It was kind of fun to see the antagonist get their end because they were overconfident. Their direct action lead to their demise. They could have survived but curiosity get the better of them. I liked Longlegs a little better but they were both delightful for me. Hope Cuckoo is good and even looking forward to Trap and Smile 2. Terrifer 3 is gonna be nauseating fun and Nosferatu looks like the perfect holiday gift for the horror fan. I really hope Hollywood just pumps out more and more horror. They make money and are cheap. I just saw it without knowing anything and found your review after as you wanted. It was excellent, but I'm not sure what scene you're referring to. it definitely did remind me of a Hitchcock movie, very good directing and performances. Some good and earned jump scares and creepy atmosphere. I wish I could truly feel scared as you imply, but it was a very good horror movie. I didn't like or maybe understand the final scene, but it was fantastic other than that.
A very entertaining and stylish movie for me this was Arcadian. It’s probably in a different class than this, but has very interesting creature design that you don’t see enough of anymore.
I actually know - so if you have a hot shower - then turn the hot water off totally and stand under the freezing cold water for a minute - which is really good for you - same great thing happens when you are really scared. So basically being really scared is good for your mind and body!!! x
Along those lines, I watched the director's debut feature last night, 'Caveat'. The ending scared me so badly I had to sleep with the lights on. I must be healthier than ever before!
@@geekinwithJamesHancock Oh wow James - we just watched Caveat too - slow paced but really truly scared us to the core in some scenes. We can't wait to see Oddity! Haha yes we both turned the bedroom lights on after watching Caveat!
Hell yeah. Glad to hear I was not alone in my enthusiasm. Some folks aren't into, but it seems like there's a growing crowd of fanatics that are right on the movie's wavelength.
Well I've seen the Exorcist and the Shining more times than I can count so it is way too early for a proper compare and contrast, but for folks who enjoy murder mysteryes, 'Oddity' is going to blow their minds.
Was on current watch list and your POV as well as praise will bring the experience full circle 🙌🏾🤘🏼Think the Director along with Osgood Perkins are similar talents, on their way to great things👌🏽 BTW which theater do you frequent most as far as comfortable and trust worthy. U mentioned 2 in a previous video but 1 you preferred over thee other
I'm always feeling from one theater to the next whenever I have a bad experience. But in general I find the crowds to be the least distracting at AMC Kipps Bay 15, the Alamo Drafthouse in Lower Manhattan and in Brooklyn, The IFC Center, and the Film Forum. How about you?
I really liked it although I don't think I'd call it scary or tension. It has a kinda cool understated creep factor though and I didn't need to be scared to enjoy the film or be invested.
This movie terrified me in moments lol favorite horror movie of the year. This movie gave me the same type of chills the dark and the wicked sent down my vertebrae
@@geekinwithJamesHancock would you say it's scarier than When Evil Lurks? I never would have heard of that flick were it not for your channel & thought it was great.
I avoid that theater whenever possible but my screening at the Regal Union Square was a total disaster. Might be time for me to give 42nd Street another chance.
@@geekinwithJamesHancock You've mentioned that the Regal Union Square is a disaster before. I haven't been there in a really long time. I lived in that neighborhood for almost 20 years and went to that theater a hundred times probably. Things must have really changed. It was never that crazy when I was going there.
I liked it very much but the love triangle and murder were very obvious from the beginning. Maybe that was as intended, but I still was left with some unanswered questions that left me a little annoyed. Also the whole thing hinged on her not saying "please hand me your phone" or her going to that specific space on the landing (and why in hell should she be there in the first place?).
I enjoyed the film. Thought it had a great early goings. It was setting itself to be a sort of clever period piece within a modern world. The problem is it just never delivered on the clever part for me. In fact it wasn't even close. Things seemed rather random toward the end. There were some jump scares, and some big missed opportunities. I was a bit surprised how they just chose to leave a couple moments more to the imagination in the final act. The thing ended very abruptly. When I saw my watch and realized there were only about 10-15 minutes left I was pretty caught off guard as it felt like we were only about halfway through any supernatural events (spoiler, sorry) that should make up a proper supernatural horror. It didn't end as abruptly and unsatisfyingly as say, Quiet Place Day One did, but it sort of had the same vibe of just kind of never reaching any ceiling let alone bursting through it. Just my opinion though. I give it a 7/10, and I feel like that may be a little generous because I like the characters, and tone. I see you here James mention the details all do come in to play. I came away with quite a different take. To each their own indeed. I am glad you enjoyed it. I hope I am not dead inside, but horror films rare if ever scare me, and this one didn't even get me flinching on the jumps. I though the house was charming though, as always :)
I'm always at risk at overpraising a movie when I've had a great experience but I definitely want to help spread the word on this one. I have a feeling I won't be alone in loving it.
@@geekinwithJamesHancock thanks for the response. I had to cut the review off 2 minutes in and find a showing. After seeing it, I have good thoughts. Will you be doing a spoiler review of this?
James - you'll always be top notch for me after your coverage of Samuel Fuller and Dorothy B. Huges on your podcast. Just wanted to add that Oddity is easily one of my favorite films of 2024 - so I totally disagree and u did not oversell Oddity!
I actually didn't find Terrifer 2 'scary' as I did disturbing. That torture scene in the girls bedroom STILL haunts me. I also thought it was too long and got a bit silly near the end xx
Like to hear praise for an Irish film but while I did overall enjoy it. I thought it was a bit cheesy in bits and fairly anti-climatic. I felt Caveat was a better film on a smaller budget
Saw today 9:30 am Matinee I did like it but not as Jazzed as you here Scary but predictable. The Actors are Good ! See A SACRIFICE if you get a chance. Cheers
Looks like I'm the only one disappointed of this movie. For all its praise I was hoping it would be more than what I was predicting from the first shots. Yea, it was intense and spooky with the long shots and sound design, but the script not so much.
Why was I so underwhelmed with Oddity:/ Plot was predictable as heck for me and everything else has been done before. But some of the shots were very pretty! And I get it, for a low budget indie horror it’s pretty ok! But nothing compared to long legs!
It did indeed. I thought Dune: Part Two would sit safely on the throne for the rest of the year, but like an assassination straight out of House of the Dragon, the flick got pushed aside.
James, I’m hoping this is just recency bias on your part. I know, “Dune 2” came out months ago, and, like memory, love tends to fade over time. Please, rewatch “Dune 2” again before you make your final rankings. You’ve seen “Dune 2” multiple times for a reason-never forget that. This is a great horror film-I get that-but “Dune 2” was a cultural phenomenon, and a Best Picture of the Year favorite.
I'm definitely guilty of recency bias all the time, but before I do my best of 2024 video, I'll do a round robin of the top contenders. I'm hoping 'Nosferatu' will be another contender as well.

The scene with the tent and the camera about broke me in two.
LOVED this movie
Hell yeah. Glad to hear I was not alone in my enthusiasm. Some folks aren't into, but it seems like there's a growing crowd of fanatics that are right on the movie's wavelength.
wow....best movie of 2024, (that would put it miles above Dune part 2)......you have set me up for Exorcist, Shining level film making.
Well I've seen the Exorcist and the Shining more times than I can count so it is way too early for a proper compare and contrast, but for folks who enjoy murder mysteryes, 'Oddity' is going to blow their minds.
Such a perfect movie!!!
@@geekinwithJamesHancock Been a long while and now back home NYC. But Kips Bay for sure. Haven't gone to those so thanks for the tip 😁
High praise coming from you!
I'm worried that I've seriously overhyped it, but I absolutely loved it and eagerly look forward to rewatching.
@@geekinwithJamesHancock would you say it's scarier than When Evil Lurks? I never would have heard of that flick were it not for your channel & thought it was great.
Are you going to be reviewing Caveat anytime soon? It definitely deserves a video, IMHO.
Saw it and loved it. Just hate head trauma....
$. I really hope this is great...I saw so much praise for Longlegs, watched it....highly disappointed.
This seems right up my alley! I may have to hold my nose and go to the AMC Empire on 42nd street to see it!! (shudder!!) Haha
Caveat is also very scary at times and totally off its rockers in certain scenes. 99% chance that it won't disappoint.
I had a similar response to it as you. Dang…I was hoping to get the sheee-ite scared out of me! 😂
Goddam James....thats saying something
I need to put my money where my mouth is read some books by Hughes instead of just watching the adaptations.
Do you ever do spoiler reviews? Would be a cool addition to a subscription. But of course that is double the work.
u should do a review on Caveat. I haven't seen that one yet
Is there a lot of knife slashing?
No
I actually didn't find Terrifer 2 'scary' as I did disturbing.
Caveat is great
Please review “Arcadian”
Saw today 9:30 am Matinee I did like it but not as Jazzed as you here Scary but predictable. The Actors are Good !
See A SACRIFICE if you get a chance. Cheers
I'm betting the person with their phone on was either a teenage girl or a cigar, or both
This movie doesn't appeal to me. I'm not into ghosts. I am not scared by them one little bit. But I will give the movie a go tonight.
Great name for a movie production company KEEPER PICTURES its a Keeper
Damn! Now I really wanna see it and it's not playing anywhere near me ☹️
Sadly the release is very limited. Hopefully Shudder gets it online sooner rather than later.
Looks like I'm the only one disappointed of this movie. For all its praise I was hoping it would be more than what I was predicting from the first shots. Yea, it was intense and spooky with the long shots and sound design, but the script not so much.
Psyched!
The tail end sort of lost momentum and got a little corny in my opinion, but it was all an unexpected pleasure nonetheless.
they were twins?? they looked completely different
Why was I so underwhelmed with Oddity:/
Plot was predictable as heck for me and everything else has been done before.
But some of the shots were very pretty! And I get it, for a low budget indie horror it’s pretty ok!
But nothing compared to long legs!
The mannequin reminds me of The Fear (1995).
Just looked it up. As a teen I always made the mistake of thinking it was a Dolph Lundgren movie because of the poster.
@@geekinwithJamesHancock 🤣
Trying to watch a movie in a NY movie theater sounds terrible
It's a little bit like playing hot potato where I'm always rotating between theaters looking for the least annoying audience members.
i fell asleep at least 4x thats how scary it is. Its just plain boring.
Maybe you should star in a new horror franchise...'he only wanted to watch the movie but this time everyone's going to die' Rage Kill
I tried writing that script once but my rage sadly exceeded my talent.
Your favorite of 2024 without a close second?!! Dune 2 got dethroned?!!!!!
It did indeed. I thought Dune: Part Two would sit safely on the throne for the rest of the year, but like an assassination straight out of House of the Dragon, the flick got pushed aside.
Oddity
Strange Darling
Longlegs
The First Omen
Terrifier 3
Late Night With The Devil
Smile 2
Any idea when the actual review starts? Not trying to be rude, just caring about my time is all.
Ok im assuming around the 14:00 mark but still not sure. Anyhoo, time stamps next time please?
James, about your annoyance with the rude movie goer. Call it The Critic. Shop that idea to the Terrifier director.
Scarier than Hereditary?
Hell no not even close
Absolutely not
Wow. I had absolutely the opposite experience with this movie. After the first 10 minutes I was bored and the plot was fairly predictable.
Looks like you're breaking the news on this movie for us film freaks.
There were a few other reviews out there first due to SXSW. But I'm happy to bang the drum on the movie's behalf.
Oddity is better than Dune 2?!?! This is hard to reconcile being that you read the books and seemingly loved the film. I'm not buying James lol
@@geekinwithJamesHancock Just remember the Lisan al-Gaib! I know your devotion to the Atreides is strong; may I not need to call upon Shai-Hulud himself to remind you of that. 😄
I thought she was Gwendoline Christie

I think it’s adrenaline.
My adrenal gland definitely needed a recharge after this movie.
“So scary, it almost stopped being fun…” c’mon man. Are we not MEN?
Man I was so let down by this one
I can’t understand…lol are we talking about the same movie it had maybe 2 scares far from scariest movie
I hate spoiler free reviews.
I hate doing spoiler free reviews but when it comes to internet commentary, you and I are in the minority.
