1/4" Wax Slug Grid Board Demonstration and Pontification on Power Piston Impingement

- With only 1 grid board left I thought I should use it to demonstrate how to make wax slugs like a boss. Follow along in real time from start to finish. I cover the loose power piston issue and show a solution. Thanks for watching. Rate, Comment, Subscribe.
The Bob Ross of wax slug reloading!
The Bob Ross of ammunition...
Very therapeutic. Super relax. Best 'cooking' show. You're the best
Good job, enjoyed your video R W, I'll be ordering my prepper and board very soon. thanks so much.
I found a couple of small slow cookers at the second hand store. For a few dollars each. They work great for melting the wax and heating the shot. I also got candles 🕯️ from the second hand store too. Cheap.
Pretty cool 😎👌👍
Definitely. In fact much easier to reload these trimmed/opened hulls. You can get a huge pile of power piston/cups and pop out the struck primers and pop in new ones even without special tools if you had to...
Good video!
If you're in the mood to experiment, drop about 3/8" of pure wax in the bottom of the shell and let it harden. Then when you add the shot+wax, I've found the slugs fly better, as they tend to be nose-heavy.
Thought I was watching a really strange cooking video for a minute?!
I will try that out today.
I figure it's got to be something different that I am doing...because I usually do not have that problem either. Maybe I am using too much shot. When I first started doing these I never had mass quantities of shot to pour in the pot...just the shot from trimming the shells I was making. I am going to try some experiments today to see what makes these pistons so loose. Could also be the ammo...I usually use Remington not Federal. Thanks!
Mountain Storm does 8 gauge wax slugs work that way?
No Choke. I lopped off the 28" Remchoke Vented Rib Barrel to 18.5" when I first got it. It's not a sporting gun...in terms of birding or shooting clays. But it shoots slugs great.

Better Method:
Just use a drill press to remove a portion of the center of the plastic star crimp without disturbing the bead around the rim of the shell.
The drilled hole in the plastic star crimp in the top of the shotshell allows you to reload the shells with wax and shot (or my personal favorite - hot glue and shot - because it won't melt on a hot day like the wax does to me in my vehicle or outdoors in the field).
Also, the drill press method perserves the bead allowing you to cycle the shells through a pump shotgun without any reloading issues. Also, the original length of the shell is preserved.
Don't worry about the shell discharging. You arent pressing on the shell with enough force to strike the 209 primer.
Of course a jig would be made to hold the shell at the bottom of the drill press and only enough of the star crimp is removed to allow you to pour out the lead shot and refill it with your new modified slug mixture. The jig would need to have a small, secondary hole drilled out in the center-base of the jig to prevent the 209 primer from receiving any potential trama/shock. The secondary hole only needs to be slightly larger than the primer and about a quarter of an inch deeper than the base of the jig.
Allow the base to slide left or right and hold a few shells at a time to increase the number of shells that you can drill out at a time.
This method won't require a roll crimper to finish the shotshell. Also, no additional pressure will be added to the powder making misfires unlikely to happen.
Sincerely,
Jacob

I see in your other videos that you were using hot glue. Why the change to wax? Which is better : Hot glue slugs or the Wax slugs? and why is it better? Thanks for all the great videos.
Whatever you want it to be. Some people fill them about 1/3 with wax and let it cool to make them nose heavy. Some people like to have a cap of wax on the nose. I like to put some wax in first then dump shot so it forces wax between the shot and I go for as much shot as it will take until wax runs out of the hull. You can always scrape up the wax and re use it later.
That's the great debate. According to my own tests and some I've seen on RUclips the hotglue slugs hit harder. I've had some of my drier wax loads spray shot instead of punching a hole...but in general wax will keep the load together until it hits the target. If you have an industrial sized glue gun and plenty of sticks there is nothing to individually filling each shell...but if you want to make lots of loads rapidly wax is the way to go. I can fill 25 waxers in about 3 minutes.
Can you give me a guestamit on how long to let the wax sit, before taking the shells out of the holder? Got my very nice quality shell board from you yesterday, but have not made any yet.
Hey thanks ! you know fun is our business !!,LOL
Hello from my curiosity, what is the main purpose of your lead-wasting with waks
ok im new to the shot gun seen i was wondering can you reuse shotgun shells like brass.
This is a pretty old video. I have developed some microcrystalline blend wax that performs really well.
Mountain Storm what is your email
I have a question and please be serious I wanna do this but I don't wanna mess up a 420 dollar shotgun if I try this will it screw up my barrel shooting these wax slugs or do any harm my gun?
yep, that's what i do !
I sent a spoon out with a kit not long ago.
i was wondering, what is the ratio between shot and wax ??
I think it may be the wax you are using possibly?? It maybe to thick to adhear to the shell itself since it is crayon wax. I believe it could be to dense and thick. Just a thought??
Do you think a mod choke would break up the "slug"?
Also, let your slugs cool before you cap them. Might fix your power piston problem.
how does the barrel look after a few up the spout ....ps love your buell posts
Shiny and new? The load travels down the bore inside the wad cup. There is no contact between load and barrel. This is the same with any shotgun loads except Foster Slugs.
how bad is it to clean ,maybe a bit moore residue ,is their any moore noticeable smoke
Say, what size are the holes for the shells ??
try golf wax walmart has it with the cannen stuff its a big 8oz or bigger peace
Nope. I think it will be fine. Probably hit even harder. I will try letting them cooling longer.
How do I purchase your wax slug tools?
You would think they might go off with the hot wax .
What choke is your 870?
I do like the idea of this, i'm not a fan of melting lead.
You should sell the loader tray and spoons too.
are crayons cheaper than gulf wax
around 0.78" or a touch more. Bigger than 3/4" and smaller than 7/8" but not 13/16". Too much fun.
...or you're gonna get buussted :) great outro
What about dollar store candles?
+Matt Lord Yep those would work too.
If you steal them from children lol. This is an early video and I am double boiling the wax to avoid producing explosive vapors but I have found a better way to heat the wax and I use a blend of waxs that work better for me.
That's what I told her...
I wouldn't
You should do some research on that first. It's not quite as easy as you might think. The tracer compound is not phosphorous...it's magnesium. And you can't just stuff some stuff in a slug and think it will be a tracer...it has to be compressed at the same PSI as the chamber pressure or it will just blow out like a sparkler.
After watching I would like to get a shell holder tray and a shell trimmer and some waz also, please send me details and how to pay with paypal
Sorry I have nothing for you at this time. I shut down my shop.
wax is softer than lead or steel....
you're messing with 5-7 tons per square inch of pressure, six inches from your eyeballs when the gun goes off.
10-15 minutes should be enough.
No it will not
