I have the 410 survival loader and all I can say is that it is a simple kit that works beautifully. I can say it is of high quality and will last a lifetime if not abused. I can see people in Alaska and around the world using these to put together ammo .

Awesome kit Barry, the beauty of shotshell reloading is the ability to reload just about any projectile you can think of, without any overly complicated tools. The Shotgun has to be the most versatile firearm on the planet, if the projectile fits within the wad, it's going down range!.

Actually got both the 410 & 12 ga, kits in the mail day before yesterday. And I would have posted earlier but I am in North Texas and been dealing with rolling blackouts, no water, spotty cell and Internet sercive, plus nearly running out of propane and firewood. Not to mention my old backup generator sprung a leak at the carbs float bowl. Talk about a Peppers Wet Dream! We survived,! Only 2 frozen burst pipes to fix, and a LOT of snow to shovel. Yea 8 inches isn't a lot of snow for some of you, but we are set up to deal with 115 degree summer heat for 6 weeks. Not snow & below 0 freezing.temperatures with that stuff we put in our sweet tea everywhere. (ICE) Thanks for the fast shipping, I'm a hands on DIY Gearhead Type Guy. My fishing pole us for survival, not sport. Gonna be fun getting those shells ready for the next disaster.
Just a suggestion here: for pre-measured powder charges to take with your kit, look into those small, glass, perfume samplers. They have a soft plastic plug type cap and would most likely hold a perfect single charge of powder (pre-measured, of course).
HellyTony. We do have “powder-shot” vials on our webstore. 5mg plastic with screw on caps for security. We did look at other types but decided not to go with a glass product. Glad I found this video. Lee use to produce a kit similar to this but are kinda hard to find these days. When you do find them they're almost the price of this unit. The big selling point to me is that base.
Yes, you are correct. The "base". It is the heart of our Kit. We didn't invent manual re-loaders as they have been around in one form or another since the late 1800's. But, we believe that we dld build a better "mouse trap" so to speak. As for LEE. Their kits were great for the time, but if you look at them and ours side by side. Ours is very different in design and especially function. Other kits for shotgun didn't re-size. Our kit offers you a choice of both. Re-size or not to re-size. Hello Austin: In answer to your question. NO. Please. NO. Do Not use any mallet or hammer on a Live or Loaded shell. Once you have powder in the case. DO NOT use anything to strike or hit a live round. The crimping process is by Hand Only. Hitting live or loaded shells is a disaster waiting to happen. And happen it will. Keep your eyes, Keep your fingers. Stay alive. Please don't give the "anti-gunners" more reason's to use against us. They already make the claim that reloading is unsafe and should be banned. Lee apparently stopped making their 12ga hand loaders, so it's great that you've stepped in to fill the gap. I don't shoot 12ga much, but seeing that has me tempted to try making a reloading kit with my lathe, just for fun. Don't worry, I'm too lazy (and incompetent) to become a competitor :) For anyone on the fence, these "Lee Loader" type hand loaders are actually really easy to use, convenient (you can take 'em anywhere) and honestly kind of fun/relaxing to use after a day of shooting. A cheap Harbor Freight rubber mallet--or even a homemade wooden one--is all you need. Suggestion: maybe include an "upgrade" to the kit that consists of a decent quality plastic box, for storage? Cardboard tends to get beat up over time. Not sure if you're moving the kind of volume that would justify having a custom mold for the insert parts, but you can probably get a US company to make decent strength foam inserts for an off-the-shelf plastic box that would work well.
Hello Greg. No worries about a home made kit. I think you will discover the challenges we had to overcome to get the prototypes working. Kinda gives an appreciation of what LEE had to do. As for boxes. The one with the kit is intended to be a mailer. That said. Barring getting soaked; They are pretty sturdy. One of the previous commenters here on our channel posted that he used a surplus LEE plastic box. Said minor modification made it work. As for the Harbor Freight rubber mallet. You are right on the money. We also have a video titled “ make wads the easy way” You might take a look at that. We talk about the $3 mallet from Harbor Freight. Thank you for sharing. Very nice personal reloading tool. I wouldn't classify it as a survival loader though. Where are the primers, wads and shot coming from when SHTF? You'll still need to stock up on the supplies so nothing changes. Other than perhaps the cost savings in the now. In the later, it's the same exact problem. If you just want to reload your own to save a bit of money this is fantastic.
Primers can be made from matches, wads can be made from cardboard, wool, wax etc. Shot can be Crosman BB's, or if you had to, you could load almost any projectile or scrap lead slugs as long as they are weighed first.

hello Greig: Factory loads are sealed,. The crimps are moved in place and in my opinion should be water tight at the crimp, If water is and issue, you could apply a wax plug or white glue on top of the "over-shot" wad before you set the crimp, This might help, but, it probably won't be like a factory sealed hull, Best regards Barry
You can always just use clear nail polish as a sealant. Some people make water tight shells and cartridges by putting a VERY light coat of nail polish around the case mouth/shell crimp and around the primer after seating it into the brass. Some like to also put it around the edge of the brass of a shotshell too, but that isn't really necessary unless you are storing your shells underwater or in a humid area for extended lengths of time. If you do put some there make it an extremely light single coat and then wipe most of it off. You only need it on the very edge of the brass. Don't shoot the sealed shells until the polish is FULLY dry unless you want nail polish in your magazine and chamber. I really need to emphasize the lightness of the coating. It can be a little thicker on the crimp, but not much. If you just gob it on there you could potentially increase pressure. It probably won't make a difference either way so long as you aren't making "A BEAR IS EATING MY DOG" loads, but better safe than sorry. A LIGHT coat of Elmer's white school glue can be used to seal the crimp instead of the polish, it is actually a little better suited to sealing the crimp than the polish is, but it's kinda messy and it can only be used on the crimp, not the primer or the edge of the brass. (Too thick and comes off too easily)

They provide the ability to re-load in emergencies when there is no electricity. They are great for the "casual" re-loader who doesn't need large production and doesn't want to pay for the expensive machines, Plus. It is designed to be highly portable and can be used anywhere. Oct. 6, 2021 Last week the U.S. Postal Service raised shipping (AGAIN). They also slowed down package delivery as a cost cutting method. Basically; they are charging more to provide less service. I used an OOP MRC/Lee Loader kit for 12 and 20 gauge shells 30 years ago, this kit is very similar but with some improvements. Lee's instructions don't mention using lube (which would have been great to know at the time). I found that "low-brass" shells don't resize as well as "high-brass" shells. I ripped the rims off on a few low brass shells, if they would chamber at all. This kit might be better for modern shells. The MRC/Lee Loader kits were designed decades ago when shells were made with different materials, probably actual brass, not brass or zinc plated steel or even aluminum or polymer with a steel disk for the rim like modern shells.
Hello Will. You are correct. The shells today are mostly plated steel bases. The using a lube recommendation is due to the Size Die. It’s double ended. One side can be used to reload by the non-size method. Or The other end is to resize the metal base. Just as with pistol or rifle cases. Using a lube when resizing helps get a better result. I used to pick up little kits made by Lee they made shotgun rifle and pistol kits , I used to pick them up for anywhere from $5.00 to $15.00 I saw one sell online for about $125.00

This is a reply I posted to someone who claimed the "ammo shortage" was nearly over. Thought it might be interesting to share:::::::::::::::::::::::: There never was a shortage. Shooters in Canada had plenty of US made stuff on the shelves and so did buyers Internationally. (go online and check out the Canadian stores) What we have ; is ammunition makers setting us up for the new Prices. When you see ammo that used to be $12 bucks or less now selling for $29 or more, you will think its' a bargain. This is nothing but "price resetting". I was at a major sporting good store just last week. They were at about 1/2 the capacity of ammo on the shelves. Actually they had a fairly good amount. . ,223/556 was $44.95 for a box of 20. This used to be under $5 bucks. When i asked the manager about the prices, he said they are paying 3 times the old "wholesale prices" to the manufacturers. SO This is about the ammo makers just resetting the price and making you glad to pay it. Willing to pay $29.95 for. box of ammo? When you cave, they will have plenty for you to buy.
Canada and other countries didn't have even a fraction of the demand that the US had due to the communist riots here and from the prisons being emptied because of Covid. Yes, I do agree that it has been an opportunity for the ammo companies to jack up prices, but the demand was so insane that it caused a shortage due to hoarding, etc. I think people focus too much on a conspiracy with the ammo situation while not paying attention to the fact that our govt has been completely taken over by Maoist/Marxist maniacs who are working with China to overthrow us. Now that 00 buckshot is difficult to get, have you ever tried replacing birdshot shells with 1/8 ounce split shot from the fishing section? You keep the same primer and powder, just replace the lead and recrimp.

I love this product. I'm a bit torn as I've never done any reloading. I'm on a budget and this looks like something I should buy. I'll have to wait till next month as I've purchased the Lee loader to get myself going. I will purchase this next month though because the quality of this thing is just oozing out of its little pores and I expect it to outlast that pos Lee loader.

Great questions. As for the LEE. They are decent bench mounted press. Not portable, but a good value. As for cutting open a shell and changing things. I suggest you check a reloading manual since you are changing components. Pressures a big thing. When you change components, safety could be an issue. Best of luck. I've also been watching another channel called "TAUFLEDERMAUS" (German for bat, go figure) who, among other things, load and shoot slugs made by machinists and metal casters. A lot of these things are custom made, so there is no factory load info on them. They have to do all the calculations themselves, and sometimes they don't get it right on the money. I'm saying this because when you have lead pellets, they have a certain inertial mass, which the powder load was calculated on. If you change the shot load, you change the muzzle velocity, range, etc. Sometimes that's not a problem. But especially if the load is going to be heavier (e.g. going from #6 shot to a slug), it could be a serious problem. But either way, it will affect range and accuracy. Ideally, yes you would need to re-calculate the powder load to match the slightly lighter weight of the steel pellets, especially larger pellets like buck. If it's birdshot, or something that fine, you might be okay with the slight variation. Always check the factory specs for the specific shot, or talk to your local gun store if you're not 110% sure. Safety is always first, no matter what. And lastly to @barrydeclined; an excellent product, and well presented. I'm a new gun owner myself, and haven't done any reloading yet. With the way you talked about this, plain and simple, you really instill confidence in people like me, who are still wondering if reloading was an option for them. Than you so much, Sir. You are a credit to your profession.

UPDATE::: The 12 gauge Survival Loader has the Hornady Crimp Starter as a standard component of the kit. We are now updating the 410 gauge to also include the Hornady Crimp Starter tool. This will make crimping even easier at no increase in price. Best regards to all.
Why not increase the diameter on one end of the knock out rod to roughly match the inside diameter of the hull. This would remove the need to line up the tip for primer removal by “feel”. This in turn would remove a factor of possible error by the user.
Good morning Jason. Good question. We did Last year we did increase the diameter and they now self center. But it made a new problem. The new larger rod could no longer act as a ramrod to seat the wad. It was too snug. So we just added a Ramrod to the 410 & 20 ga. Kits. The 12 ga. Was ok as is. @@barrydeclined2547 thanks for the quick response. Failure on my part to articulate correctly. I was suggesting only increasing the diameter on one end, not the entire rod thus leaving the opposite end available for wad/piston placement
No worries Jason. It was on me. I failed to understand correctly. That option was considered.and tried. It made other issues. Additional cost of machining and rod length problems. The larger diameter would need to be machined down so it would still slide inside the wad to seat it. On a 3” shell, the smaller diameter portion would need to be that long. The larger diameter would need to be at least 2”” longer to give the rod the ability to center over the primer. Too short and it would not have enough bearing surface to keep it straight. The pin would be off. It would increase the rod length which in turn leads to a longer less compact box. The best solution and simplest was to make the entire rod the larger. diameter and include a new part. Hence: The Ramrod. I hope I got it right this time LOL Barry

With the popularity of 410 handguns now as well. Buying the kit is saving you a lot of money. A mec with 410 setup is pricey and they are finicky. A box of loded 410s is 14.00 plus. And good 12 gauge 00 buck is a damn buck or more per shot. I own a mec but love my 2 survival reloaders... i use them at my bench more than a bug out tool.... ive made 200 rounds with the 12 gauge tool in no time. Easy to use. Very safe And doesnt take up any space. Im telling you eventually midway usa or brownells will be selling these.
Yea I am debating getting one or building my own setup. Got several projects ahead of .410 reloading. I have a load all and load 12 ga slugs. Gonna eventually do 16 20 and .410 just the low volume of ammo I shoot for those I can't justify the cost of another press. That is why this or building my own kit is more aligned for my usage. @@willwood487 I just purchase a Lee Load All II for 12 ga and a conversion kit for 20 ga. They also make a conversion kit for 16 ga that I will purchase soon. Yes. It will. You would need to request the longer “set tool” to reach the Crimp. In my experience, the mini-shell have much thicker hulls. That means it is harder to re-form the crimp. Other than that. Yes. The 12 ga. Kit would reload them. 😃👍
Great product Barry! I am in the early stages of jumping into reloading (close to retirement and joining a sporting clays club), however finding powder and shot these days is nearly impossible. So bad that I’ve held off on purchasing my first single-stage reloader. So frustrating. I’ve adjusted fire (no pun intended) and have been simply stocking up standard Federal trap/skeet loads from Wally. Hell,a case of 100 is only $20. I also want to load 00 and slugs....same dismal amount of products out there. Anyway, how difficult would it be to take an unfired 2 3/4 standard trap/skeet load (7.5 shot, probably 1 1/8 oz), or dove/quail load and “reload” it with 00, or a slug with your cool product? Not really into trying the wax slug deal, but whatever works in these trying time. Thoughts? Much appreciated.
Hello and thanks for asking your question and commenting. The Survival Loader is designed to re-load fired shotgun hulls. That said. The Survival Loader would be able to re-crimp the shell. There are dangers to what you would like to accomplish. First ;the factory crimp would be somewhat difficult to open as it is heat set and formed. But, it would be possible to get the crimp open without causing too much damage. Second; there may be a problem with compatibility of the powder charge for the new shot load. You might try to find out what type of factory powder was used & the charge weight. Then consult a loading manual to make sure the charge is compatible with the new load weight. Too heavy a powder charge & you could have over pressure issues. Too light a charge & you could have other problems that may damage your firearm. I hope this helps Barry
I have two lead molds intended for making slingshot ammo they were made by do it mold co. I got two different size molds and each mold makes two different size balls they were advertised as being able to use the balls for split shot by tapping a sharp knife into the balls and splitting them . I have yet to mike the balls and compare them to the different buckshot sizes . But when the shtf I’ll be ready for loading buckshot using my slingshot or fishing wts. Just thought you maybe interested. Also I have several of the old lees hand loading kits in rifle pistol and shotgun configurations. I used to sit on floor and load .44 magnum loads while watching t v I love those kits . It’s relaxing just don’t expect to speed load so I’m prepared

Hello Celso: All metal cases can not be resized or crimped. Plus. The decap rod pin is to remove the larger shotgun size 209 primer. The brass/all metal cases have the small primer hole similar to the pistol or rifle size. I hope this information helps. Best regards Barry

LEE had this 'design' since the 80's for Rifle cartridges....actually nothing new.

I have the 410 survival loader and all I can say is that it is a simple kit that works beautifully. I can say it is of high quality and will last a lifetime if not abused. I can see people in Alaska and around the world using these to put together ammo .

Awesome kit Barry, the beauty of shotshell reloading is the ability to reload just about any projectile you can think of, without any overly complicated tools. The Shotgun has to be the most versatile firearm on the planet, if the projectile fits within the wad, it's going down range!.

You are correct. The 3-1/2” is too long for the size die and decap rod.

Actually got both the 410 & 12 ga, kits in the mail day before yesterday. And I would have posted earlier but I am in North Texas and been dealing with rolling blackouts, no water, spotty cell and Internet sercive, plus nearly running out of propane and firewood. Not to mention my old backup generator sprung a leak at the carbs float bowl.

We survived,! Only 2 frozen burst pipes to fix, and a LOT of snow to shovel. Yea 8 inches isn't a lot of snow for some of you, but we are set up to deal with 115 degree summer heat for 6 weeks. Not snow & below 0 freezing.temperatures with that stuff we put in our sweet tea everywhere. (ICE)

Just a suggestion here: for pre-measured powder charges to take with your kit, look into those small, glass, perfume samplers. They have a soft plastic plug type cap and would most likely hold a perfect single charge of powder (pre-measured, of course).

We did look at other types but decided not to go with a glass product.
We felt that rough handling might cause glass to break and therefore destroy the contents.

Glad I found this video. Lee use to produce a kit similar to this but are kinda hard to find these days. When you do find them they're almost the price of this unit. The big selling point to me is that base.

The "base". It is the heart of our Kit.
We didn't invent manual re-loaders as they have been around in one form or another since the late 1800's.
But, we believe that we dld build a better "mouse trap" so to speak.
As for LEE. Their kits were great for the time, but if you look at them and ours side by side.
Ours is very different in design and especially function.
Other kits for shotgun didn't re-size.
Our kit offers you a choice of both. Re-size or not to re-size.
And I am sure eventually, someone will come along and out-best us.

Do Not use any mallet or hammer on a Live or Loaded shell.
Once you have powder in the case. DO NOT use anything to strike or hit a live round.
The crimping process is by Hand Only.
Hitting live or loaded shells is a disaster waiting to happen. And happen it will.
Keep your eyes, Keep your fingers. Stay alive.
Please don't give the "anti-gunners" more reason's to use against us. They already make the claim that reloading is unsafe and should be banned.
Reload smart, reload safe and enjoy the benefits.

Lee apparently stopped making their 12ga hand loaders, so it's great that you've stepped in to fill the gap.
I don't shoot 12ga much, but seeing that has me tempted to try making a reloading kit with my lathe, just for fun. Don't worry, I'm too lazy (and incompetent) to become a competitor :)
For anyone on the fence, these "Lee Loader" type hand loaders are actually really easy to use, convenient (you can take 'em anywhere) and honestly kind of fun/relaxing to use after a day of shooting. A cheap Harbor Freight rubber mallet--or even a homemade wooden one--is all you need.
Suggestion: maybe include an "upgrade" to the kit that consists of a decent quality plastic box, for storage? Cardboard tends to get beat up over time. Not sure if you're moving the kind of volume that would justify having a custom mold for the insert parts, but you can probably get a US company to make decent strength foam inserts for an off-the-shelf plastic box that would work well.

No worries about a home made kit. I think you will discover the challenges we had to overcome to get the prototypes working.
Kinda gives an appreciation of what LEE had to do.
As for boxes. The one with the kit is intended to be a mailer. That said. Barring getting soaked; They are pretty sturdy.
One of the previous commenters here on our channel posted that he used a surplus LEE plastic box. Said minor modification made it work.
As for the Harbor Freight rubber mallet. You are right on the money.
We also have a video titled “ make wads the easy way”
You might take a look at that. We talk about the $3 mallet from Harbor Freight.

Glad i found this video. Ive got one of them savage 30-30 12ga combo guns. Already have an old Lee load kit for the 30-30 and having then 12ga load kit would complete the outfit. The simplicity of your kit is well thought out.

Very nice personal reloading tool. I wouldn't classify it as a survival loader though. Where are the primers, wads and shot coming from when SHTF? You'll still need to stock up on the supplies so nothing changes. Other than perhaps the cost savings in the now. In the later, it's the same exact problem. If you just want to reload your own to save a bit of money this is fantastic.
Primers can be made from matches, wads can be made from cardboard, wool, wax etc. Shot can be Crosman BB's, or if you had to, you could load almost any projectile or scrap lead slugs as long as they are weighed first.
I love my survival loaders !! They are more fun loading by hand then with a machine !! I with they made a 20 gauge kit !!!

Factory loads are sealed,. The crimps are moved in place and in my opinion should be water tight at the crimp,
If water is and issue, you could apply a wax plug or white glue on top of the "over-shot" wad before you set the crimp,
This might help, but, it probably won't be like a factory sealed hull,

You can always just use clear nail polish as a sealant. Some people make water tight shells and cartridges by putting a VERY light coat of nail polish around the case mouth/shell crimp and around the primer after seating it into the brass. Some like to also put it around the edge of the brass of a shotshell too, but that isn't really necessary unless you are storing your shells underwater or in a humid area for extended lengths of time.
If you do put some there make it an extremely light single coat and then wipe most of it off. You only need it on the very edge of the brass. Don't shoot the sealed shells until the polish is FULLY dry unless you want nail polish in your magazine and chamber. I really need to emphasize the lightness of the coating. It can be a little thicker on the crimp, but not much. If you just gob it on there you could potentially increase pressure. It probably won't make a difference either way so long as you aren't making "A BEAR IS EATING MY DOG" loads, but better safe than sorry. A LIGHT coat of Elmer's white school glue can be used to seal the crimp instead of the polish, it is actually a little better suited to sealing the crimp than the polish is, but it's kinda messy and it can only be used on the crimp, not the primer or the edge of the brass. (Too thick and comes off too easily)

I used an OOP MRC/Lee Loader kit for 12 and 20 gauge shells 30 years ago, this kit is very similar but with some improvements. Lee's instructions don't mention using lube (which would have been great to know at the time). I found that "low-brass" shells don't resize as well as "high-brass" shells.
I ripped the rims off on a few low brass shells, if they would chamber at all. This kit might be better for modern shells. The MRC/Lee Loader kits were designed decades ago when shells were made with different materials, probably actual brass, not brass or zinc plated steel or even aluminum or polymer with a steel disk for the rim like modern shells.

You are correct. The shells today are mostly plated steel bases.
The using a lube recommendation is due to the Size Die. It’s double ended. One side can be used to reload by the non-size method.
Or
The other end is to resize the metal base.
Just as with pistol or rifle cases. Using a lube when resizing helps get a better result.

This is a reply I posted to someone who claimed the "ammo shortage" was nearly over. Thought it might be interesting to share::::::::::::::::::::::::
There never was a shortage. Shooters in Canada had plenty of US made stuff on the shelves and so did buyers Internationally. (go online and check out the Canadian stores)
What we have ; is ammunition makers setting us up for the new Prices.
When you see ammo that used to be $12 bucks or less now selling for $29 or more, you will think its' a bargain.
This is nothing but "price resetting".
I was at a major sporting good store just last week.
They were at about 1/2 the capacity of ammo on the shelves.
Actually they had a fairly good amount. .
,223/556 was $44.95 for a box of 20. This used to be under $5 bucks.
When i asked the manager about the prices, he said they are paying 3 times the old "wholesale prices" to the manufacturers.
SO
This is about the ammo makers just resetting the price and making you glad to pay it.
Willing to pay $29.95 for. box of ammo?
When you cave, they will have plenty for you to buy.
Canada and other countries didn't have even a fraction of the demand that the US had due to the communist riots here and from the prisons being emptied because of Covid. Yes, I do agree that it has been an opportunity for the ammo companies to jack up prices, but the demand was so insane that it caused a shortage due to hoarding, etc. I think people focus too much on a conspiracy with the ammo situation while not paying attention to the fact that our govt has been completely taken over by Maoist/Marxist maniacs who are working with China to overthrow us. PS- Your survival loader looks awesome.

We are just getting ready to release the new 20 ga. It should be on our web-store in about 2 weeks or less. We have received all the parts from the CNC facility. Now we are working on the packaging and Instructions.
Eventually we will have a 10 ga. along with a 16 and a 28.
Being a small company, It takes time.
Tool-room prototypes to be made, testing to make sure everything works. Get quotes and then get put on the waiting list for machine time, etc.
And somewhere in there, run a busy online business. We are trying.
The new 20 ga. kit will have all previous parts and advantages but with a couple of upgrades.
This upgrade is a result of people like you commenting and offering suggestions.
We do read and consider all suggestions.

Now that 00 buckshot is difficult to get, have you ever tried replacing birdshot shells with 1/8 ounce split shot from the fishing section? You keep the same primer and powder, just replace the lead and recrimp.

@@barrydeclined2547 it sounds like a good way to save some money. I also found you can buy 1000 5/16 inch slingshot steel ball bearings for around $20. Each one of those is .31 caliber, and they sell larger. FYI.

I love this product. I'm a bit torn as I've never done any reloading. I'm on a budget and this looks like something I should buy. I'll have to wait till next month as I've purchased the Lee loader to get myself going. I will purchase this next month though because the quality of this thing is just oozing out of its little pores and I expect it to outlast that pos Lee loader.
Buy a LEE 12ga. loader. It's cheaper, faster and easier.
You will never wear the Lee Loader out . I have several caliburs. Been around for years. Perfection speeks for its self.

As for the LEE. They are decent bench mounted press. Not portable, but a good value.
As for cutting open a shell and changing things.
I suggest you check a reloading manual since you are changing components.
Pressures a big thing. When you change components, safety could be an issue.

I've also been watching another channel called "TAUFLEDERMAUS" (German for bat, go figure) who, among other things, load and shoot slugs made by machinists and metal casters. A lot of these things are custom made, so there is no factory load info on them. They have to do all the calculations themselves, and sometimes they don't get it right on the money.
I'm saying this because when you have lead pellets, they have a certain inertial mass, which the powder load was calculated on. If you change the shot load, you change the muzzle velocity, range, etc. Sometimes that's not a problem. But especially if the load is going to be heavier (e.g. going from #6 shot to a slug), it could be a serious problem. But either way, it will affect range and accuracy.
Ideally, yes you would need to re-calculate the powder load to match the slightly lighter weight of the steel pellets, especially larger pellets like buck. If it's birdshot, or something that fine, you might be okay with the slight variation. Always check the factory specs for the specific shot, or talk to your local gun store if you're not 110% sure. Safety is always first, no matter what.
And lastly to @barrydeclined; an excellent product, and well presented. I'm a new gun owner myself, and haven't done any reloading yet. With the way you talked about this, plain and simple, you really instill confidence in people like me, who are still wondering if reloading was an option for them. Than you so much, Sir. You are a credit to your profession.

The 12 gauge Survival Loader has the Hornady Crimp Starter as a standard component of the kit.
We are now updating the 410 gauge to also include the Hornady Crimp Starter tool.
This will make crimping even easier at no increase in price.

Why not increase the diameter on one end of the knock out rod to roughly match the inside diameter of the hull. This would remove the need to line up the tip for primer removal by “feel”. This in turn would remove a factor of possible error by the user.

Last year we did increase the diameter and they now self center.
But it made a new problem.
The new larger rod could no longer act as a ramrod to seat the wad. It was too snug.
So we just added a Ramrod to the 410 & 20 ga. Kits.
The 12 ga. Was ok as is.
Our new and up-coming update video will address that improvement.

@@barrydeclined2547 thanks for the quick response. Failure on my part to articulate correctly. I was suggesting only increasing the diameter on one end, not the entire rod thus leaving the opposite end available for wad/piston placement

It was on me. I failed to understand correctly.
That option was considered.and tried. It made other issues.
Additional cost of machining and rod length problems.
The larger diameter would need to be machined down so it would still slide inside the wad to seat it.
On a 3” shell, the smaller diameter portion would need to be that long.
The larger diameter would need to be at least 2”” longer to give the rod the ability to center over the primer.
Too short and it would not have enough bearing surface to keep it straight. The pin would be off.
It would increase the rod length which in turn leads to a longer less compact box.
The best solution and simplest was to make the entire rod the larger. diameter and include a new part. Hence: The Ramrod.

With the popularity of 410 handguns now as well. Buying the kit is saving you a lot of money. A mec with 410 setup is pricey and they are finicky. A box of loded 410s is 14.00 plus. And good 12 gauge 00 buck is a damn buck or more per shot. I own a mec but love my 2 survival reloaders... i use them at my bench more than a bug out tool.... ive made 200 rounds with the 12 gauge tool in no time. Easy to use. Very safe
And doesnt take up any space. Im telling you eventually midway usa or brownells will be selling these.
Yea I am debating getting one or building my own setup. Got several projects ahead of .410 reloading. I have a load all and load 12 ga slugs. Gonna eventually do 16 20 and .410 just the low volume of ammo I shoot for those I can't justify the cost of another press. That is why this or building my own kit is more aligned for my usage. Cool product none the less
@@willwood487 I just purchase a Lee Load All II for 12 ga and a conversion kit for 20 ga. They also make a conversion kit for 16 ga that I will purchase soon. Lee has no plans on making a conversion kit for 410, and that's to bad because the price of 410 is thru the roof. Check out (Short Lane) Gunadapters.com You will love the conversion kits they sell :)
It would be cool if they offered an optional leather leather carry case to put the whole box into. One with belt loops, one without.

Yes. It will. You would need to request the longer “set tool” to reach the Crimp.
In my experience, the mini-shell have much thicker hulls. That means it is harder to re-form the crimp.

We need a 16 gauge kit!
Great product Barry! I am in the early stages of jumping into reloading (close to retirement and joining a sporting clays club), however finding powder and shot these days is nearly impossible. So bad that I’ve held off on purchasing my first single-stage reloader. So frustrating. I’ve adjusted fire (no pun intended) and have been simply stocking up standard Federal trap/skeet loads from Wally. Hell,a case of 100 is only $20. I also want to load 00 and slugs....same dismal amount of products out there. Anyway, how difficult would it be to take an unfired 2 3/4 standard trap/skeet load (7.5 shot, probably 1 1/8 oz), or dove/quail load and “reload” it with 00, or a slug with your cool product? Not really into trying the wax slug deal, but whatever works in these trying time. Thoughts? Much appreciated.

The Survival Loader is designed to re-load fired shotgun hulls.
That said.
The Survival Loader would be able to re-crimp the shell.
There are dangers to what you would like to accomplish.
First ;the factory crimp would be somewhat difficult to open as it is heat set and formed.
But, it would be possible to get the crimp open without causing too much damage.
Second; there may be a problem with compatibility of the powder charge for the new shot load.
You might try to find out what type of factory powder was used & the charge weight.
Then consult a loading manual to make sure the charge is compatible with the new load weight.
Too heavy a powder charge & you could have over pressure issues.
Too light a charge & you could have other problems that may damage your firearm.

I have two lead molds intended for making slingshot ammo they were made by do it mold co. I got two different size molds and each mold makes two different size balls they were advertised as being able to use the balls for split shot by tapping a sharp knife into the balls and splitting them
. I have yet to mike the balls and compare them to the different buckshot sizes . But when the shtf I’ll be ready for loading buckshot using my slingshot or fishing wts. Just thought you maybe interested. Also I have several of the old lees hand loading kits in rifle pistol and shotgun configurations. I used to sit on floor and load .44 magnum loads while watching t v I love those kits . It’s relaxing just don’t expect to speed load so I’m prepared

Don’t know about accuracy.
But, lead loads in a pinch.

All metal cases can not be resized or crimped.
Plus.
The decap rod pin is to remove the larger shotgun size 209 primer.
The brass/all metal cases have the small primer hole similar to the pistol or rifle size.
