I’m in Brittany and very careful : I use the night time cheap electricity to heat water, wash clothes and dishes. We use wood stoves and pay 220.€ a corde from the farmers. The house is really well insulated. We cook in a mini oven, instant pot and slow cooker. Our electricity is 90€ a month.
They really needed an experiment to reach these conclusions? Humans in cold climates have lived like that for millennia, and people winter camping generally do not bring central heating with them to the woods. I conducted a similar ‘experiment' some time ago, when the heat pump in my apartment ceased working for a few years. The only heat I had was from a small space heater in one of the two bathrooms, and on very cold days from turning my oven on all the way for a few hours. Occasionally the temperature got down to between 5 and 10 degrees Celsius, but winter only lasts so long, and then it is over. If this is how some of us have to live for a while in order to starve Russia of as much oil and gas revenues as possible, we should absolutely do it.
I dash around in the morning with a small dishcloth and run it along the bottom of the coldest rooms' windows. The condensation is very minor. Don't let that hold you back.
1989 was on bed rest for pregnancy during Wisconsin winter, kept thermostat at 55, was in sweat pants and under down comforter. I was fine. Right now is maybe 60 in house, have heater next to me if feel cold, ski headband, fingerless mitts, legwarmers, plenty of sweaters along with warming recipes for all sorts of things in instant pot and plans to do some things in the oven when the predicted subzero F temps hit in a couple of days. Usually have problems with dry air in homes in winter but as hang clothes that isn't a problem.
I spend 505.- euros per month at the moment on gas and electric , but that's an advance , ( i should get some back if i keep the heat down ) then I keep my central heating on 18C and heat with my wood burner, but wood costs 170.- euros per cubic meter, so maybe I need to get out my ski clothes and wear them around the house! 🤣
Simply said, let's freeze and wear thick clothings. France solution is different from Germany 🇩🇪 (which is investing in batteries to maximized the RE investment). Eastern Europe, reports flowing in is using firewood, lignite for heating. Back to pre industrial era. Goodness gracious. It takes 2 years for the markets to adjust. 😳👮♂️
