On this channel we like to do a lot of dogfighting most videos are some sort of dogfight between 2 different aircraft as we explore their different capabilities. From time to time I like to dabble in Virtual Reality, I think VR is a great new technology and I love to show that stuff off for the channel from time to time.

It would end in the same way- Foxbats expending all missiles on more nimble Phantoms scoring a few hits or not a single hit at all then either run away or merge and get slaughtered.

Unfortunate for the MiG-25 pilots to be assigned as escorts. They can't hit and run when they've got Bears to protect, so they're forced to dogfight...in steel airplanes.

My first thought too. They're boom and zoom interceptors meant to shoot down bombers and leave the AO not escort friendly ones. They really had no chance here.
Pratically EVERYTHING about the MiG-25 design screames BVR fighter. Powerful radar, check. Long-range missiles, check. Ridiculous speed and altitude, check. No guns, check. Poor visibility, check. The arobatic capabilities of a brick, check.
The second I realized what the Foxbat mission parameters were hand how close GS's group was to them I knew the outcome. Makes a somewhat misleading title and big talk about how dangerous they can be, and then they show up in the exact position they're tailored to lose.

If there's a cooler looking aircraft than an F-4 in full camo, I don't know what it is. A very long time ago, in the early '70s when I was young, my family was traveling through SE Asia. We were flying from Bangkok to Hong Kong. The airplane flew out over the South China Sea, avoiding Viet Nam airspace. Mid way through the flight, the Captain comes over the PA and says for everybody to look out to the left side of the plane. About 50-100 meters off the port wing, an F-4 in full camo was escorting our airliner through the local airspace. I just remember seeing a fighter plane in full camo. I found out later it was an F-4. When I was a few years older and got into building model airplanes, that was the first one I built.

If I remember right the Mig - 25 was a knee jerk fear response by the Soviet Union to counter the XB - 70. Which never came to fruition. When I was in the Navy, every once in a while, we would get intel reports that the Mig - 25 s squadrons in Eastern Russia, especially in winter, would be out of service. The whole wing at once. The reason? The mechanics drank the 100% anhydrous ethyl alcohol hydraulic fluid and they didn't have any in stock to replace it. Why? Because the mechanics drank the 100% ALL the ethyl alcohol hydraulic fluid.
Just call in a flight of Tu-22s to replenish! 😆

Nice work. The Foxbat is a fast interceptor, but it looks like it doesn't even stand a chance two-circle, let alone one-circle. I'm surprised, though, with its long-range weapons and powerful RADAR that it didn't do better BVR. Poor choice of tactics, maybe?

The MiG-25 is excellent if used for it's intended true purpose. It's fatal flaw is it's extremely, almost comically narrow design case.
The MiG-31 however... Now, that thing is an absolute monster. Someone saw what the MiG-25 _could_ do, and decided that it should. Slight changes to wing geometry, better engines, more hardpoints and a reinforced airframe made this thing a very, very formidable beast. Very difficult to shoot down something that can maintain such ridiculous speeds, and something that can operate at such high altitudes. Most aircraft are at risk at higher altitudes in BVR engagements. Honestly, the thought of MiG-31's probably kept a good few people up at night.
The Mig-25 was a interceptor, not an escort fighter? I just can't recall it could perform a mission like this.

The MiG-25's were built to be a high-speed high-altitude interceptor, so it's very curious to see them escorting slow turboprop Tu-95's, that's a job more suited to MiG-23's.

The jump in tech between these era fighters and gen4 is probably more than the previous 2 generation combined. That said a Phantom armed with f15 radar and modern missiles and maybe an engine upgrade would be one heavy hitter!!

It seems DCS replicates the MiG's greatest weakness: poor visibility and situational awareness. Not surprising since it was not a dogfighter.

Sidewinders have a max range of ~20 miles, and those are the modern ones. The west powers never really developed a long-range IR missile; not for a lack of trying, mind you, we just didn't put as much time and effort into them as the Soviets did.
The older rear-aspect missiles could probably get a front-aspect lock on a 25 lol

One of the reasons the Shah got the Tomcats was because the Phantoms couldnt keepup/ intercept the Foxbats flyimg into Iranian aerospace.
Those missles on the Mig are huge.
The Bisnovat R-40, aka AA-6 Acrid. At the time of introduction in 1968 they were the longest ranged air-to-air missile in production. It could comfortably reach targets at 30 miles (something Sparrows at the time struggled to do) and under favorable conditions could reach out to 50 miles. It wouldn't be for another six years that the West could beat it with the AIM-54 Phoenix.

I've always loved the Phantom, it's such a unique-looking aircraft and gorgeous in spite of its chunky design, but seeing all these Phantom videos you've been producing has given me a respect for the lethality and effectiveness of the Lead Sled that I never really had before. My suggestions: 1. Trying to shoot down an SR-71 with a Mig-25? Trying to survive Mig-25 intercept with SR-71? What about missions with the F117 Nighthawk? Or going to max altitude and also max speed with X-15? If possible: replicate the anti-satellite intercept with anti-satellite missile fired from F15 (mission profile available on google, I believe. I believe it involves firing the ASAT-missle going vertical with the F15 from rather high altitude. Br //M
1. We dont have flyable SR-71 or MiG-25 for this sim
2. SR-71 doesnt have any weapons
3. We dont have a flyable F-117 in this sim
4. We dont have satellites in this sim or the correct F-15 version for that.

it was made from stainless steel, which is a little heavier than normal carbon steel
Unless I'm mistaken, they designed the Mig-25 to hunt our SR-71s.
It is an incredibly fast and high flying aircraft. Its biggest downside is its weight. It was built out of stainless steel instead of aluminum to handle the heat of mach 3 flight. All that weight makes it much less maneuverable and its engines eat themselves if they fly and top speed for too long.
They can actually achieve the same altitude of the SR-71 but they can't maintain flight that high. They have to anticipate the flight path of an SR-71 and climb at top speed to meet it. Once it gets within missile range, it could launch an attack before falling back down to an altitude it can maintain flight at.
There are reports from SR pilots of them seeing the 25 come rocketing up close to them. (Relatively) and falling back down. None of them ever fired on the 71s and there are no reports of them being ordered too either. Its hard to say if they could have shot down a 71 but its certainly possible. Thank God it never came to that.

The Foxbat had been built to intercept the XB-70 actually, but they did turn out to be the Soviet's best card to go after SR-71's.

Compulsive viewing, for me.
It seems to me that a fighter escort should be flying ahead of the aircraft that they are escorting. Considering the forward speed of the heavies being escorted, flying ahead gives an escort more time/distance to deal with an aggressor before the heavies come into range.
An aggressor could come up from the flanks or behind, but the forward speed of the heavies still makes interception from in front a more likely direction to cover.
I wonder if it’s possible to score a kill with drop tanks, or decoy a fox 3 or something like that…
I still want to see you drop your tanks and hit the enemy plane with them at the merge!
Why are they not at 35k doing mach jesus when they fire? Mig 25/31s should never get that close intentionally.
