Eow, Thanks for the video, not sure how a AV-8 is suppose to turn the tables on bandits like a F-4 or a Mig-23. Like the Red circles that highlight the bandits location on screen, good addition to the videos.
That first kill was one of the most badass moves I've seen in your videos. Props to your opponent for wringing everything out of the aircraft in a fight against a better airframe.
I have a silly idea…what if both players start a dogfight with random control surface damage on their aircraft? Obviously not enough to send you tumbling out of the sky immediately. Just the thought of two aircraft having a drunk slap-fight sounds fun to me
When I was a kid, I went to an air show in the 90s and got to sit in the cockpit of a Harrier. It was a really cool experience, but the funniest part about that day was the pilot. He was trying to show off to the crowd and started doing pull-ups on the nose cone of the Harrier until there was a very loud crack that came from it and the whole thing was hanging off the rest of the jet.
Daaaang that kill the Harrier got on you was legitimately super sick to see. Going vertical and inverted like that was so cool. Credit where credit is due :P
As an old Marine grunt, I just always thought of the AV8B as a CAS specialist almost, or light bomber, above being an air to air fighter. 🤷🏻♂️. I knew they could dogfight of course. I’ve just never heard of one used for that, or heard a Marine aviator talk about its dogfighting skills. But I’ve definitely heard and have seen them being called on for CAS. I remember thinking how cool they must be even before I’d joined the Marine Corps. Watching them in action will always be a great memory of my time in, and there weren’t many of those memories once I was out and was able to think about some of the stuff I’ve done and saw when I was in.
The AV8-B was never intended for air to air, and the Marine pilots only got very basic training on it. Basically if an AV8-B was ever in an air to air battle, someone fucked something up, and the Harrier was in self defense mode the entire fight. Now the British versions are different. They Sea Harrier FA2 even had one of the most advanced pulse doppler radars of the time. That plane was intended to fight other fighters, among other roles.
It's not a recent idea for an attack aircraft to carry Sidewinders for self-defence. The A-4 Skyhawk, A-7 Corsair II and even the A-6 Intruder attack aircraft could all carry Sidewinders if necessary, and sometimes did so in Vietnam.
I'd love to see some 2v1 gun fights, from both sides. "Never leave your wingman" type stuff maybe? The 1v1 fights are very cool in highlighting different capabilities of each aircraft, and thank you for really getting into the two-circle vs. one-circle stuff - that's been very educational. But 2v1 fights do happen in the real world - it would be interesting to see a comparison of maybe 4th gen fighters in that scenario. Also 2v2. Just restrict it to visual fights - bvr is a different thing altogether!
I was assigned to VMFA 531 Grey Ghosts for a few months in around '76-'77. Nice skin there in your second fight. BTW, the four digit number on the fuselage just above the afterburners tells the build/procurement date, and 1007 is a VERY old bird, probably actually indicates an F-4B. I don't know the plans for future F-4s in DCS, but a Navy-Marine F-4B basically equals an USAF F-4C. A USAF F-4D, has a slightly different radome from the B and C. I think Navy-Marine F-4J's may have made it to Nam, but not sure. The F-4D looks pretty close to a J, but the radar in the J is quite different. I also think the J got modified J-79's from the E, which cut down a LOT of smoke, and I think the J also got the fat main wheels of the E. After the J was the S, but I don't think they were involved in any aerial activity, but I don't know. None of the Navy-Marine F-4s had the leading edge slats -- I'm pretty sure they all used BLC (boundry layer control) when the leading edge and trailing flaps went down for landings. Whatever. Nice flying there GS.
A harrier is a plane you should never underestimate. Just the ability to do weird things makes them a threat even if they rarely have an advantage in speed or turn rate/radius.
Haha, he bet all the marbles following you up into the vertical in that first match! He probably had to get out and push to get the jet back up to speed after he let off that second missile 😂
I’ve seen both an F-4 & F-111 takeoff, f-4 first very impressive with how much noise it made……….then the f-111 took off and was Considerably Louder than the f-4.
not many people know that that big pig the F111 was supposed to be a navy interceptor, it just got too damn heavy, but I would like to see it go against an F-16 or anything else that you might think would be comparable, but I don't believe I've seen you do anything in the F11. It was a fighter bomber/intercept
im curious with the harrier stalling and firing off the two missiles, you said "I didn't see him fire the second missile" and then move on, if you *had* seen both is there anything you could have done to avoid being hit there? or was it just one tracked through the flares and other didn't?
The only thing I can come up for the harrier in the two like that is either a barrel roll or immelman to break, can't bunt or split S to low for that. Not griping or anything just making a observation that these fights always breakdown into ACM on the deck. Is that because they're trying to have a barrier to a climbing attack?
Sopwith camel vs German EuroFighter or Fokker tri-plane vs British EuroFighter. Guns only. Unless you can figure out a way to duck tape a winder to bi plane and launch it
is there a british harrier version perchance? Since I've seen you using the US marine one a lot. Im not sure as i personally dont have DCS as much as i'd like to, but I was just wondering since maybe the british ones have more power or something??
When in history did the phantoms get 9Ms. What conflicts. And also what model. I thought the best the phantoms got was the 9L or 9lic or what ever for the F4F ICE
One thing I have never quite understood about the Harrier, if it can take off vertically, then it has to have a better than 1:1 thrust ratio... Therefore it should in theory be a monster ... ??? Vertical climb etc, high max and continuous turn rates etc... But no - why not ?
Because its can only do vertical takeoff/landing when its relatively empty with little ordinance. It usually uses ski ramps or rolling takeoffs to get airborne.
You frequently encourage viewers/players to use that virtue/skill that starts with "p"... what is now, um... Oh yeah, "PATIENCE", ya had it used on you in this video, lessons learned I guess, great flying by both pilots, great video, again, thanks.
So, here's a question: Let's say you are in a rate fight with an opponent. They are out rating you. So, you begin the maneuver to offset the circle by increasing and decreasing elevation. If this continues, then obviously the circle will have offset to the point you can reverse the turn and escape or go nose on (ideally). Say your opponent sees this happening, and counters your attempts to offset the circle by matching your elevation changes. What options are available to counter this?
Was wondering if he would use Viffing to try to neutralize that two circle action, as i figured he could use viffing like a Cobra- but the turn rate never seemed to show up Day 104 / Video 52 of bugging ya for some Mig 31 Foxhounda action(with you in it!)
I'm probably out of the info loop on this but I thought the F-4 didn't have a gun. They had the clunky gun pods? The pilots hated them. Being an airforce brat. My dad was an ordinance tech in vietnam. He had to hear all the cussing about those gun pods.😂
g-force induced loss of consciousness, the spin of the aircraft after losing the tail caused massive G forces which knocked out the pilot, he did not regain consciousness in time to eject.

Call it “Rust-Bucket Duels” or something lol
Like a tomcat that has the wings stuck swept back🙈
How is that a silly idea? That's brilliant.
@@oliverlarsen6768 vs F-16 with stuck airbrakes?
I can’t see a real reason for the fight to happen. If you had one fault you most likely would try to make it home and so would your opponent.🤷🏽♀️

I'll bet that resulted in him doing a lot of push-ups.
Turns out his call sign was nose job!😂
Daaaang that kill the Harrier got on you was legitimately super sick to see. Going vertical and inverted like that was so cool. Credit where credit is due :P
He turned that Harrier into a SAM site.
That first kill was awesome
One of the best

Well the British originally designed it as an interdictor so yeah from the get go it was a CAS plane.
That hammerhead stall kill was awesome. Almost WWII like.
Can we just take a moment to admire the details in the clouds and the matching shadows cast on the ground! Amazing!
If I ever hear my pilot say 'That's not gonna hit us...' I'm bailing out, right then and there.
Harrier Pilot did good! He musta´felt rather happy!

It still works? That's good news, I was afraid it went the way of the strike eagle.

OMG! I LMAO with the first kill! That was fantastic! The little Harrier that could!
That first round the harrier decided "i'd rather be lucky than good"
That actually was some pretty slick flying on that first kill.

My favorite part of all your videos is that you talk us through the tactics, it’s like fighter pilot school :)
Watching you track the Harrier ... then you move your head and I realize I was tracking a speck of dust on my monitor ...
F4 instructor pilots never liked flying against AV8 A/Cs, A4s also produced dread.
Thanks for putting the Harrier in. It was my childhood favourite plane, I was 8 when the Falklands conflict happened.
F4J from my brother’s old squadron in the Vietnam era VF-92!
The Harrier works best at very low altitudes. This was told to me by a USMC Harrier pilot.
Please can we get some more Harrier videos? Such an amzing piece of aviation and engineering
That F-4 Phantom cockpit looks sweeeeet.
The F4 is such a wicked looking Aircraft ! It's angles are one of a kind.

That harrier must have been playing Ace Combat with that stall

Big Ups to the Harrier pilot for being a fantastically uncooperative Bandit 👏 Great fight.
GS, you should try to re-enact the Desert Storm F-16 pilot that evaded all those SAMs over Bagdad, that Operations Room video was crazy!
The red circle is very helpful

Great stuff, love the F-4E
Wow... taking your aircraft to a stall to get the missile off- I can't think of a harrier situation!

Remember, nobody can fly SLOWER than a Harrier.
Funny how Jester survived, while you died when explosion was at the tail...
round 1 lol what a baller move from the harrier. All or nothing gamble for sure but it paid off.
Can you explain in one of your videos what it means and how to offset the circle if you’re losing a rate fight.
Question. Was it covered in a video before what means "moving in relation to your bandit"? Is there a video about dogfight tactics? Thx, cheers
What do you call prop hanging when you're in a jet? 🤔
