Salaam! On the issue of food pantry and the masjid, why not? If the jamaat has the capacity to do it , why not? The Prophet Muhammad( SAAW) said, which translated means," feed the people and spread the salaams! the masajid in Bronx, N.Y. that have the food pantries,are powerful vehicles of dawa to Allah and Islam! After September 11 2001 in our neighborhood in the Bronx, N.Y. because we had a food pantry open to everyone, (Muslim and non- Muslim) we had no problem with the non-Muslims in our neighborhood, while most of the masajid were attacked our had negative reactions from the non-Muslims in their area, it so happend that these masajid which had problems had no proactive interaction with their neighbors ( non Muslims) Also, when the masjid began this food pantry, the local authorities rushed to help the Muslims to build the program beyond the level at which it was started! So maybe it is not a fard for the masjid to open a food pantry, but if they have the capacity to do it, why not? The benefit will definitely out weigh the harm, insha'Allah!
