Yeah, I do wish you could have seen the park when it opened. It was beautifully themed and managed. Most people just know the name “Six Flags” without understanding its meaning. There were actually 6 different flags that have flown over the state of Texas. They are of Mexico, France, Spain, Confederacy, Texas and America. Each was a highly themed “land” that had rides and attractions specific to that area. It was MUCH closer to Disneyland then it is now. The employee uniforms were likewise themed. I first went when it opened and ended up working there in ‘74 & ‘75. “The Cave” was definitely a unique attraction with oddly shaped “Speelunkers” animated throughout. Though well below the animation level of Disney it was still a wonderful ride, especially when it was hot which was most of the time! The original boats had a single bench going down the center which you would straddle to ride. SFOT was also one of the first to institute the one day park pass which included all the rides and attractions for one price. Disneyland still had individual ticket books at that time. Actually when SFOT opened, you could pay a very small fee just to get in and walk around the park or the other pass that allowed you to ride everything. For that one they would stamp your hand with invisible UV Ink and each ride had an attendant standing next to a UV light and they would check your hand to admit you to the line. SFOT was also the home to the very first Log Flume type ride that has since been copied around the globe. For MANY years it was only open on Friday evenings then all day Saturday and Sunday from around April until the end of November going to full time 7 day operation for June, July & August only. That was mainly due to most of its employees being in school at the time. Thanks for the great memories!

Thanks for sharing all these details! There was definitely evidence of true love and attention to detail from the earlier days of the park.

You should really go during the summer! Everything is usually open unless it is really windy but it looks way nicer and youll be surprised how much more decoration and more active it is! Titan in the summer is the best when its almost sunset!

It'll likely be a few years, but I'd like to do a summer visit. I'll have to keep your sunset Titan advice in mind. Thanks for the tip!

I miss going to 6 flags over Texas! I remember running around between juge rory scream and the rest of the park! I remember one year during the holidays they had "snow" sledding wich was taking the plastic sled down a hill of crushed ice....it was back in the 90s....

Idk if they did it this past year since I couldn’t find it, but definitely before Covid they still had the sleds for holiday in the park!

God I WISH the pirate's ride had more to actually do with pirates-- its a ride that opened with the park in the 60's, but got replaced with "Yosemite Sam's Gold River Adventure Ride" in 1992. This version of the ride was closed a few years back and they decided to bring back this version-- though, I can say, as someone who rode it on opening day for the revival, it REEKS of cheap, 70's craftsmanship with terrifying plaster statues and a barely understandable story.
It might be nostalgic for older park-goers, but the monsters inside the ride (Because there are now various statues of the park's own design inside) are mainly just creepy and confusing.

I remember back in the 80s and 90s there being tons of stories (urban legendish I'm sure) of tons of water moccasin encounters inside this ride. Kinda added to it's mystique, I never saw any myself.
