I had no idea there even WERE any video recordings of the great, great Ruth Draper! How thrilling to get SOME idea of her impact!!! I was once talking to a Cuban director, who used to fly all the way from Havana to see her--he said he would tell himself, ahead of time, that he wasn't going to just enjoy the plays, but, instead, would focus on observing her TECHNIQUE--and he said he was never able to do it, because the moment she came on stage, the stage would FILL up with the imaginary people she conjured up, and he would get totally lost in the drama.
Ruth Draper historians know that this the rarest of the rare. It’s probably the only existing footage of Draper in performance. So this is simply the Draper holy grail. Several years ago the Library of Congress obtained a copy of this Omnibus segment; I actually travelled there to view it. And now some great people (thank you) have figured out a way to publish it on this forum. Incredible!
To SEE the great Ruth Draper - amazing. She wrote this back in 1922 for herself as a young mother. She died one month after this telecast at the age of 72.
Yes! Except: To my knowledge, she never had any children at all. But. She did have one heck of a world-class brilliant nephew, the great ballet tap dancer, Paul Draper.
Extraordinary performer. Died with her boots on, as it were - heart attack after a performance not long after this broadcast. Rest in Paradise, dear Ruth. Keep those angels regaled.
