I just installed my kit today. My biggest hold up with Starlink is the entry price. Once it dropped to $299 it was a no brainer.

After seeing what happened to people with Hurricane Helene, I decided to get a mini for backup at California. If the big one hits, we have Tesla Solar, Tesla Powerwall and now Starlink. We have friends who live in a rural area in Napa where there is no cell coverage and we could bring this with us. It's great that the service can be paused too.

Sounds like a nice setup for backup internet. The Mini is great for that with its small size and low power usage.

Our Home Depot in Guam got sold out of starlinks and are doing pre orders for the next batch. It’s getting popular in Guam

I'm also hearing that the Mini shipping times are being pushed out to 3-4 weeks, and it keeps selling out at 3rd party retailers like Home Depot. The demand is strong right now worldwide.

Well add another subscription to that number lol
My neighbor just came to me yesterday asking about getting Starlink instead of their DSL.
They got the gen3 dish with the roam plan so they can go between here in rual Idaho and rual Arizona.
We've had our gen2 since 2021 I believe. It's been really cool seeing the speeds go up and the latency go down over time. Started at 90-100ms latency, and now it's between 15-20ms latency.
Started out around 180mbps (on the standard residential plan), and now it's upwards of 280mbps down.
The most we ever got from our old local Internet provider was 8mbps and 90ms latency at least. And it was very very unstable. During peak times it would go down to under 1mbps and sometimes even 1s latency lol
Starlink is sooo much better for absolutely everything, and it was only 20$ more than our old plan.

I saw them at Costco in Canada this weekend. The hardware availability is so much better than it used to be. I could see them being an impulse buy because they're right there and can be setup as soon as they get home instead of waiting for them to ship.

After 10/6 there will likely be a price increase, whether in the hardware or service. I also think there will be a tremendous sale around the Christmas holidays, making their year-end sales metrics shine substantially.

Once again, very helpful for those of us whoo are new to Starlink and considering purchase. QUESTION: Do you have an opinion on the quality/reliability of refurbished kits? E.g. are they adequately examined & tested before resale? I haven't been able to find a reference to their build warranty, if any. Great videos!

    • @StarlinkHardware
      @StarlinkHardware  Месяц назад +1

I don’t have any personal experience with the refurbished kits, but in general I would say there is no practical difference between new and used. There is nothing in the design of the hardware to wear out or degrade over time. Failures will be unpredictable new or refurb. They come with a warranty, so I say go for a refurb unit if it’s cheaper and you have the option for your area.

Consider the price per Mbps. Before Starlink I was paying $50./month for 5Mbps down on average (with periods of time where the service did not work at all). With Starlink, I'm currently paying $120./month with consistent 200Mbps down or higher. On a per Mbps basis, Stalink is much cheaper and works 24/7.

@ Yes I got it about 2 weeks ago and just use it as a back-up comm system in a computer case. I purchased a battery pack and adapter so as to not need any cables (all connects via its own Wi-Fi. When placed in my back yard, I get good bandwidth and can watch videos all throughout the house except upstairs which is toward the front of the house.

Great Video! I’m looking to get a home system to just use when cable / cell / data service goes down. Since I don’t currently own a system I’m not able to ask them questions but can look at their FAQs. Anyway, I was wondering if you knew if I could buy a home system, use the $50 a month roam or cheapest service to just have internet when I have to use it. Then when power goes out, go to the Starlink site and upgrade to the $120 unlimited for home plan. If I did this, would I have that full plan access immediately or would it take a business day or 2 to kick in? When my home service comes back on, could I then switch back to the $50 a month plan? Hopefully you might be able to answer these questions. Thank you!

My Starlink will be a back up for areas with bad coverage that i tend to go into. I will set mine up on the rear of my sleeper facing straight up and level with the top of my sleeper. I haven’t installed it yet since i haven’t been home yet to grab it and get it set up on my truck.

It is like a mousetrap and they will make the cheese more expensive. I sent my already ordered Starlink mini back to the sender, so did other campers in Europe or they cancelled the contract due to the unfriendly policy of the E.Musk company.
