    For anyone watching this 6+ years on… clay aerated pebbles are super light and can’t ‘smash’ a root - seedlings manage perfectly well in gritty soil in nature etc. I’ve found it’s best to hold seedling in an empty net cup and then start filling it with pebbles rather than vice versa.

    Don't worry about the keyboard warriors. It takes effort to put these videos up. If you dont like it, dont watch. My only criticism, roots dont like light, and clear containers will get algae in the root system. Its nice to see the root growth, but more beneficial to be dark for the root system. Also, rockwool can give a nice footing for your roots instead of threading it through the clay balls. Use clay balls to fill around it. An air stone helps as well.
    I made my containers with a cheap plastic bucket, a plastic plant pot base flipped upside down on top of the bucket, and a hole, or holes cut into the makeshift lid for net pots, or single larger pot.

    I would think a better procedure would be to make your solution. Then add your stones to the solution to get them saturated. Fill the jar, using an empty net cup to gauge how much solution to put in the jar. Then thread the root of the plant down through the bottom of the net cup. Insert it in the jar. Then add the saturated stones one by one around the tender seedling. Thank you so much for explaining that you use 1/4 teaspoon of each fertilizer per gallon of water to start seedlings. That information is so useful.

But all the plants die off? Do I need to leave some air between bottom of basket and water or not? I don't know why all of them die. (My ones in soil normally are growing really well) Thank you

      It depends on where the roots end up. A good rule for water level is around half way up the roots. That allows the roots to get air, and keeps you from having to refill as often.

    Best sterilising method for clay pebbles is to soak them in a hydrogen peroxide solution (12%) then allow to dry out afterwards. Informative vid, not tried this "Kratky" method for tomatoes before now but definitely going to give it a go. Thanks bro

    Thanks for sharing! Im getting ready to start growing with an aquarium setup. Ive started seedlings before and did it with a small Tupperware bowl like yours but not in a pool of water. I just put a damp paper towel in it then placed 5 or 6 seeds in different spots, put the lid on and let it sit in a drawer for 7-10 days, maybe 14. But what i saw here was u just left them in an open dish of water. Do u just keep it on the counter while the seeds germinate

      Krystian Radikal Hi. I did the same as you for this video. I start on a damp paper towel in the lid of that container in the video. Let us know how it turns out for you! Thanks for watching!

    • @BraxtonVaughan
      @BraxtonVaughan  7 лет назад +6

      Sara Arroyave
      The way I usually do it is by placing soaked seeds on a damp paper towel and then placing the paper towel with seeds inside the lid of a clear plastic container like you see in the video. This I believe is superior to plastic bags because it allows the seedlings to grow upright which makes it easier to use them in hydroponic systems. Hope that helps!

  • @carlosvm1989
    @carlosvm1989 7 лет назад +9

    Mistakes: don't expose the roots to light, move the water in a way that it gets oxigen (air pump)
    Improvements: do your seedlings in a rockwool or coco with 80-90% of humidity (big tupperware)and then, once they have a good root structure place into the hydro system. also, try to keep all the nutrients in one place, so it's less work to maintain the plants by watering in a single place (big pot for 6 of them or more)

    • @BraxtonVaughan
      @BraxtonVaughan  7 лет назад +6

      With my indoor plants, I haven't noticed much algae growth. Unless you have a really high power light setup with more transparent containers, I wouldn't think you would have any trouble either. My outdoor plants grow some algae, but I haven't noticed any negative side effects from it. Maybe I will do a test this winter to see how algae affects plant growth.

    • @lishgray1099
      @lishgray1099 3 года назад

      the clay balls absorb nutrients and water and help the plant in that way but here it looks like it is only used as support... maybe something more porous than marbles so they didn’t get all rolly polly and potentially squish... (make your own polymer clay balls?)

    • @Mystress1980
      @Mystress1980 5 лет назад

      You don't. The point of hydroponics is to grow the plant solely in water (and additives to feed the plant, obviously). This is not how you start a seedling if you're planning to transplant to soil at any point.

      Hi Jade, a clear jar is fine if you plan on eventually transferring it into an opaque or simitransparent container. The clear jars usually start growing algae after a few weeks, but by that time they probably need to be transplanted anyways. If you have any more questions do not hesitate to ask!

      Hi Naheed. You may get better results with hydroponic designed nutrients. But if the liquid solution contains a good amount of both the macro and micro nutrients your plants need, then I don't see why it wouldn't work. You can always try it. Have a good day!

    You could have shown us a plant in progress. Preferably not the 10 foot tall one though.

      These came from HomeDepot but you can usually get them at any home improvement store dependingon the season. Walmart sometimes has seeds as well. Amazon has them all year. Thanks for watching!
