We also learned about Grover Cleveland as well and how he was impeached bc he didn't think it was right to take away land from Hawaiians. Thank you for this video. I have lived in Hawaii my whole life and I implore everyone that plans to visit here or move here please do so with respect and the knowledge of how these island have been colonized not even 100 years ago. If you approach the locals and the land with respect you'll be treated the same, however most locals are fed up and are being driven out by overdevelopment and jaded tourists who really don't care to show any sort of respect, rather milking the local communities of their land and resources for their own entertainment. There are ways to ethically visit and enjoy your stay. Support smaller local businesses, do not get a time share here or property viewing it as an investment... these are our homes and neighborhoods we've grown up in and year by year empty vacation rentals gobble up the opportunity for any local or native Hawaiian to live here. There is an anti-tourist sentiment here because we have been exploited for too long, so simply be aware of this and have some respect before you visit. Mahalos

What about all of your new Chinese owned skyscrapers being built?

I'm Puerto Rican, Spain took our land and made our island theirs, it's just the way it is--same now with the U.S.A. No point in getting mad about it, it's just human nature, the Tainos were killing each other and taking each other's possessions and land before the Spaniards. In the same way, the native Hawaiians were also doing the same before the U.S.A. It's natural to get more angry when the people taking our land and possessions don't look like us, but we only feel that way because we are up-jumped apes, genetically inclined to believe that someones hair or skin being slightly lighter or darker than ours means they must be killed or go away. As Thucydides put it "the strong do what they can, and the weak suffer what they must."

They’re not bad but it just look like a Jake Tran video, not a Dollar Maze video. You should try to check out different styles to stand out from the crow (black and white photography/ paintings that illustrate the subject if link to historical events/ an official picture of the main asshole with a crack revealing the victims of his crimes etc...) in short try to stand out even if it take you a few try.
That was a piece of advice, and another one try to limitate the number of shorts compared to the more traditional video since a lot of people that are interested in this subject tend to dislike the Tik Tok video model.

      Just a few examples:
      1. Hawaiians didn’t live with no government until James Cook arrived. The Hawaiians had a sophisticated system of government.
      2. Missionaries didn’t come and force people to sell their land or to adopt Christianity. King Kamehameha I was very interested in Christianity and after his death his favorite queen Kaahumanu would make hula illegal and essentially make Hawaii a Christian nation.
      3. King Kamahemahe III wasn’t a “puppet” ruler 😂 This one is genuinely hilarious. It’s just such a ridiculous lie. You might notice his name, “the third” he was the rightful heir to the throne. Furthermore, the video says that at this point the Hawaii kingdom was established which is also wildly false. You might notice the name, “the third”! 😂 The Hawaii kingdom was established with King Kamehameha I.
      4. During the coup no us soldiers were standing, around guns drawn and certainly not standing beside any members of the Honolulu Rifles like the video says. They were garrisoned the entire time. They arrived with orders to protect American citizens should a fight break out. A fight didn’t break out and so they did nothing. The video shows tanks while talking about this (something that hadn’t been invented yet) to make you feel like there was an invasion. There wasn’t. Queen Liliuokalani had a larger number of personal guards than the number of marines that landed.
      5. The members of the Safety Committee were not Americans like the video says. They were Hawaiian citizens and most of them were third or fourth generation Hawaiian citizen. Which means they’re families had immigrated to Hawaii at the same time or possibly even before King Kamehameha brutally United the islands under his rule. Not only this, but they were all members of parliament appointed by King David Kalakaua.
      6. There is ZERO evidence that King Kalakaua signed the so called “bayonet constitution “ at the point of a bayonet. The only person who claims this to be true is Queen Liliuokalani who wasn’t there when it happened and who has a pretty vested interest in possibly lying. Not exactly an unbiased objective source. King Kalakaua had a large personal guard, it’s pretty unlikely that some members of parliament would pull out rifles in the palace, aim them at the king and have no retaliation from his 150+ armed friends.
The list could go on and on and on and on.
You might wonder, why would someone lie about all this?
Well, “how the us stole Hawaii” and “the dark side of paradise” sort of headlines make for a much better story than, “the complex history of Hawaiian politics and culture”.
That’s why media outlets lie about this sort of thing, also because they used 2nd and 3rd sources instead of reading the original source material on Hawaiian history.
Why “local” people spread these lies is a much more complicated question. In my experience, most my friends born and raised in Hawaii have been taught lies in school and from their parents who were taught them from their parents in their schools.
At the end of the day, these pernicious lies are harmful to Hawaiian people, they’re harmful to everyone because they spread unnecessary animosity.
If you’d like to read for yourself and find out what’s true I’d recommend starting with Ruling Chiefs of Hawaii by Samuel Kamakau

It’s good that Jake is covering this topic, but this narrative is a bit simplistic. Like did his guy really say Hawaii had no government before James Cook and Kamehameha III was just installed as a “Puppet King” by western missionaries? That is not true at all. Kamehameha III was the son of Kamehameha I aka Kamehameha The Great who had united the islands over a long drawn-out war of conquest, fighting other rulers, because yes they had rulers. They weren’t just a bunch of hippies loving it up in the sun until big bad James Cook came along. Kamehameha III was under pressure from many directions, including foreign business interests, but the fact that he modeled his government after the British crown, doesn’t mean he was a puppet. His population had been decimated over the past few decades and he was trying to adapt to the times and copy the most successful government of that era. That doesn’t mean he was a puppet. The “Bayonet Constitution” of 1887 changed that, but they wouldn’t have had to force him to sign it at gunpoint if they already controlled him. Also, it wasn’t just Americans that were behind all this. There were Germans, British and wealthy Hawaiian elites who supported some of the land reforms.

Thank you for posting this. I had a passing knowledge of Hawaiian history and thought that that seemed really strange as I didn't recall anything about these companies or westerners installing a puppet king as it had always been my impression that the Hawaiian Islands had unified themselves after making contact with Europeans. There's already auntie of bad things in history without having to blame the colonizers for everything. The idea that somehow this was a puppet king installed by missionaries is a bit of a stretch at least.

    • @frankjennings4489
      @frankjennings4489 Год назад

@@nicaea385 Definitely. Saying he was a "puppet" is a stretch and saying that the missionaries installed him is flat-out false. You are right that the islands were unified after contact with Europeans. The reason Kamehameha I was able to conquer the other islands was because he used western weapons and advisors to a greater extent than the other rulers. Also, those advisors were sailors that he captured from British ships. They weren't missionaries that convinced him to conquer the islands. He didn't need to be convinced that becoming the greatest ruler in Hawaiian history was a good idea.
