- On the last day of Magnus' visit to my home town Brno (the Czech Republic), I was the boss 🙂 So I took him to my house, and we set a climbing circuit together. I think it was great teamwork, and stay tuned to find out how we marked the individual holds and footholds! There was no way to avoid talking about the Olympics and make the last day unique and memorable. I took him to some of the most heinous training sessions - climbing and training in the sauna! Blood, sweat, torture and a really lot of fun. To be honest, I suffered a lot as well!
Thanks to @magmidt (and his team) for giving his best in every challenge I prepared for him and for all the great effort, fun, and friendly conversations. Respect!

Alex Honnold has shared a similar sentiment - I attended one of his talks, and one main takeaway was "Expand your comfort zone."

Magnus was AT a lot of the same competitions as Adam, and yet every time they hang out it's like Magnus is in awe. It's like a kid meeting his favorite celebrity and it's so wholesome.
Magnus is a really advanced climber but Adam is the best climbet in the world. It's like superboy hanging out with superman.

Adam is so freaking likeable in these training sessions with Magnus. And again, I almost like the video quality and documentation of these videos more than the climbing, which is VERY impressive from the AO video team. Amazing collab guys!
100%, all feels very real and it's nice to see the people behind the beast ascents.
Not only in this training sessions. I met him several years ago when he was still a teenager at the Czech outdoor boulder cup. He was followed by people with a video camera. At first I thought 'oh his parents film him'. But then I saw him climbing. All the time he behaved totally normal. No star attitude at all.
The classic music when Ondra is climbing is so appropriate, when he climbs it does look like a form of art.
I feel like Magnus is a human being with extremily high climbing skills, Adam is something else, he is the essence of sport climbing, like Dave Macleod is the essence of trad climbing or Ueli Steck the essence of mountaineering. There are just a couple of persons per discipline that can reach that level, to see him climb is a joy for the eyes and an honour. I really hope he will get the gold medal he deserves in 2024

Good comment I agree with you except for mountaineering, I think Nirmal "Nims" Purja is the essence of mountaineering. Nepalese are the best in the world.

@@tyrionas They are of course just opinions but I strongly disagree with you on this. Nims is an unbelievably strong human being but what he did and how he did it has very litlle of mounteneering: oxygen, helicopter, using normal routes (especially this one). What Messner, Bonatti, Humar, Kukuczka, Leclerc ecc. did was extremely more difficult, technical and wild. I mentioned Ueli just because is contemporary, he for instance climbed the south face of Annapurna which Nims couldn't have done in his wildest dreams, Humar the south face of Dhaulagiri which is infinitely more dangerous and extreme than Nims's feat, Bonatti climbed for a week in winter a new route on the north face of matterhorn, and Messner climbed everest alone in alpin style along a new route from the north. If you know even little about mountaneering you have to recognize how more incredible this adventures were.
What Nims did was absolutely astonishing I don't argue that but his case I fear is similar to Honnold Free solo. Their acomplishments are incredible but also very well documented in nice Netflix movies, and this led a lot of people that undesrtand very little about climbing to mention Honnold every time becuase it is the only thing they know about climbing and I fear is gonna be the same now with Nims and mountaneering. I noticed in fact that the truly mountaneering adventure that Nims did is seldom mentioned because it wasn't mentioned in his documentary that is the invernal at K2.
I am sorry for the lengthy response and if I seem condiscending, but I am a mountaneer and I do love mountains dearly and this topics are really close to me so I wanted to answer properly. Cheers

It made me think that although Magnus always says he doesn't miss competing, in that moment he kind of missed it

It's fascinating that Magnus was almost star struck by one of his contemporaries. I think that's telling of Adam's abilities.
When Magnus was giving it all I was so impressed and then he said "I feel like an idiot too" I bursted out laughing. He has such a genuine and funny way of looking at things which cracks me up.
To be fair it was kind of a silly looking exercise, I think that's what he was thinking about
I love how Adam gives instruction and Magnus just does it like it's no big deal. I've seen Magnus direct people and they struggle. two people who areso good at what they do and understand the instruction is amazing.
He's n amazing climber, what sets them so far apart isn't physical strength it's the level of complexity the can handle mentally in a route and creativ processing all at once. I'm a Physio myself and the amount of motor control and adaptability Adam has is of the charts he's like awaking skywalker. His mind is made for climbing
Personally seeing Adams hard work not pay off is really humbling. Sometimes we don’t get what we deserve and Adam has shown us how to use failure as fuel! Great video thanks for being an inspiration
Anyone can lose on any given day. Adam is still the best. He just didn’t win one competition that included a discipline in which he does not compete.
Adam isn't too disappointed in it, he doesn't like the format of olympics, therefore he doesn't actually "care" all that much. Don't get me wron, he Does, of course, mainly just cuz he wants the gold, but i believe his main focus are routes, his projects.

In my opinion, the horse and rider collaboration, at the Olympic level, is the gold standard for collabs towards which each of Adam and Magnus might aspire, remembering that it is performed without chalk, with shirts on. It is something in that category "Beyond Focus".

@@m2rsvp yeah no without years of emotional manipulation the horse wouldnt be "tame" and definitely wouldnt carry a human on its back. im assuming that winning an olympic gold medal in any sport is difficult, but horse riding is a shitty sport nevertheless.
Well, let's face it - horse riding is barely that demanding to personal skills of a sportsmen like 98% of other sports. More shitty for physical form are only car races.

When ondra eventually retires from competition climbing can't wait for even more of a focus on outdoor and also more time for collabs like this.

I wonder if we will get anyone as professional and committed as Adam in 20 years after his retirement. He truly is one of the most devoted athletes from all sports combined!

Well there are currently three professional climbers/partners of climbers who are pregnant, so in 20 years we might see those elite genetics competing against one another! Shauna Coksey, Adam Ondra and Alex Honnel. And Tomoa Nagasaki just got married to another pro climber so maybe they will bring another superbaby into the mix 😂

I love the way Adam is completely 100% focussed, and then completely switched off and chilled two seconds after letting go. It’s absolutely clear that he genuinely loves what he does, and his enthusiasm is incredibly infectious. It’s so easy to be a fan.

Hats off to the video team! They made something already enjoyable to watch, that being two phenomenal climbers collabing, and took it to the next level with the videography. Particularly, the angle when they were discussing their fingers was ingenious. Something so simple as changing where you're filming from adds character to an otherwise monotonous scene.

I'm going to sound like an apologist, but I think the point he was making was about the physical effort at different points of the climb rather than the skill required.
{please read in the playful tone of voice rather than the hyper-critical tone of youtube} It would be fun to watch them ride, I think! Riding isn't well-known and it's one of my favorite things... no apologist tone needed as no offense taken, just humor.
