Star Citizen is a highly controversial game that's commanded much debate and discussion. Having raised over $500m, people understandably high expectations, though many have never played the game themselves. Well, I decided to try it for myself and, I have to say, I've been extremely impressed thus far.

Played Star Citizen for around a year now. One of the best interactions I had was at a space station leaving my ship and taking the elevator. During my trip to the lobby, I was bored and pressed every button in the elevator. When I left the elevator, I passed another player heading to the elevators. Next line in chat was "Who pressed all the buttons in the elevator?" Some of the best laughs I've had in the game.

The fact you were so bored that you did it kinda puts me off as it suggests all they have done is add more ships and no interaction based content still . Although I can imagine that being hilarious, I’m just sick of wanting to play this game , downloading again to find out all I can really do is farm to get ships and explore a landscape with nothing in it , I remember the first trailer , the one with the giant tremors like worm .. man that got me so hyped … over 10 years later ,, not even a damn cow in sight bro lmao . Just pausing here at 10:34 to express something. I’ve been playing for a little over a year now, and I’d just like to say that when I was new, on my third day of playing I got stranded on a planet. I asked for help in the chat, and within ten minutes someone was there to pick me up and fly me to the nearest station. He ended up showing me the ropes, and not long after that I joined an organization that I still game with. In short, this game has the most welcoming community I’ve ever experienced in gaming. Almost all of my interactions have been positive.

The immersion is its greatest selling point. It was already present in Wing Commander Privateer and Chris just had a much bigger vision. To me I would have been happy with a current gen version of the world of Wing Commander which may have been faster and cheaper to complete, but oh my do I still applaud the project and I keep being amazed by how good it looks and the inclusions of explorable planets the way they did is amazing as well. It's just such a shame many space sims totally forgot about immersion and focused on arcade like action which in my opinion is the biggest reason for the decline of the genre. There were some that came close but didn't have the world building to complete the package. I'm not a person that spends money in game and I'm fine earning in game credit to buy stuff, it's part of the game. That said I do hope it will get some sort of a release date as losing your progress with updates will surely not something I want to spend a lot of time on.

I don't know what will happen with 3.18, but I haven't had my balance wiped since last year. :)
You can land appropriately sized ships on buildings with landing pads in cities.
The game uses Cry Engine with a lot of very custom plugins and stuff, and starting with 3.18, a custom rendering engine that will be fully implemented slowly. Great stuff!
Why would a solo player buy a ship meant for corporations and governments that can't even be flown solo? The big ships also require full crews to be manned properly, it just doesn't make any sense and the price reflects this. These ships aren't marketed for solo players and aren't expected to be owned or manned by individuals. I know that looking at it as a game it hurts, but SC isn't a game, it's a life simulator. As a real universe it makes sense both financially and just isn't practical.
As for buying ships with real money, they're donation packages that get you ships. It's the same as Patreon. I think CIG said just as much somewhere a few years ago but I don't remember now. That's how I see it anyway. C.I.G calls them 'pledges' and I don't think of them any other way. I decided to donate to development and got an Avenger Titan. I was happy and preferred my starting ship, but I can always buy or rent one of those if I want to in Lorville. I've never understood the attraction of constantly throwing money at the game for a ship you'll either never fly or will spend most of its time in your inventory, but it's having it in your inventory that counts, right? In my three odd years of playing SC the same amount of money as people spent for a copy of Fallout: 76 has gone on my account.
The amount of issues people have with the game that aren't actually issues and are intentional design is frankly insane.

One thing I'd like to add about the super expensive, massive ships like the Carrack and 890 Jump (the super yacht featured): these are intended to be *end-game* ships. Essentially, the aim is that these ships will require multiple crew members to run effectively, so you'll need either hired NPCs or additional players, and that they'll be used for specific jobs that you enjoy doing in-game. For example, the 890J is supposed to be for either shuttling VIP guests across space, or running a kind of cruise ship--it's not really intended to be run and used by a solo-player. That's also why these big ships have engineering areas--the goal is to have roles like engineers on your crew who work in those areas to keep the ship maintained and functional.
Lastly, the bigger the ship, the more expensive to run with fuel, insurance, crew, and maintenance. Basically, RSI is trying to make it so that players don't buy these ships as a flex, but rather as an investment into a play-style. I expect that as we get closer to the 1.0 launch, these massive ships will be owned/run by guilds that operate it together, and it won't be unrealistic to log on to be an engineer on an 890J, and that alone I think is soooo cool.

Once they do this and alongside server meshing (basically just being able to transition servers seamlessly) they can then effectively infinitely expand the game and open more content much faster than the original system. Pausing at 10:50, I have only this to say: do people not like figuring things out themselves? I don't actively play Star Citizen because my computer can't run it, but I've done simulators before. Part of the fun for me in a technical game like this is the trial and error of figuring out how to do stuff. A lack of a tutorial or other hand-holding mechanics is cool sometimes. It's not the same genre, but I think back to Morrowind where there's no quest markers. They tell you "go to this place", and you have to talk to NPCs to get general directions and explore form there. Going into a game like Star Citizen, I'm not going to expect the game to be sreamlined for casual play. I'm gonna expect to have to learn a complicated control scheme, and the best way to do that is by doing it for yourself. That, and the keybinding menu is genuinely one of the best I've seen in any game in Star Citizen, very helpful or figuring out what buttons do what.
So am I bothered by the lack of tutorial? No. I wouldn't mind if one was in the game, but I don't think it's a huge issue. It's a genre that requires a lot of patience to get into, so if someone is completely turned off by that they probably wouldn't want to play the rest of the game anyways.

@@sharafbalboa3460 It's pretty hard to guess. Mainly because when certain milestones (for example Server Meshing) are reached, the development will speeed up. They are also constantly upgrading tech that they use for making things like planets and points of interest, so it can take less time. Developers also gain experience (look for example how much better the new ships are designed compared to the old ones). We don't know how fast they will be able to make other star systems in the future. 4.0 in 2023 will be a huge step forward, because of Pyro and Server Meshing and maybe then we will be able to start predicting how many years of development are left. And after the first part of SQ42 releases, I think they said that they will focuse more on Star CItizen.

Then some bozo blew it up killing 23 people and incapacitating 12, not to mention the 56 injured, then we all scrambles the fighters we had left (Scorpius, Hortnets, Arrows, Talons, etc.) as well as a few sub-capital ships (Carracks, Hammerheads and A2/M2's) and fought them off and their numerous forces, it lasted 2 hours 13 minutes due to people dying then re-spawning and joining back in, we eventually won the war and took control of the server, was an event even star wars couldn't compete with, if persistence tech existed at that time there would be a couple hundred ship remnants left, 10's of millions in cargo not to mention salvage. It's a common mistake to say they "needed" 500 million to do it. They have received 500 million to WORK WITH. That amount is purely a result of people's belief in the project and willingness to pay, knowing it's going to be a long time before we see anything like a 1.0. Further, having that much money to work with doesn't magically make things go faster. There's an upper limit to how far you can break up workload and thus how many people you can throw at a problem. One advantage here is the breadth of systems does lend it to more and larger teams, since there are so many thing to work on. There's still that limit to how many people you can throw at a problem before diminishing returns or even negative returns ("too many chefs in the kitchen").

Also, the fact that it refuses to load a star system if you fly to it manually in supercruise (without hyperspacing) kinda proves it doesn't stream content on demand but requires loading screens.

Star Citizen is unlike any other game out there, or will be. No one would ever make a game like this. So, they did. Other games have come, blossomed, faded and died while this continues to grow. It's less a game and more a Space Life Simulator. Down to the granular details of having to manage food. Pausing to stop for a bite to eat becomes emergent gameplay. They're building an amazing game that wont be ready for a long time. While they're doing that, they are letting us play around with what they've got so far, and they listen to the backers. I don't think you'll find any dev group as open. Especially when they change their mind. I love hearing the details of the battle the developers make against obstacles. I love hearing about the new tools they're developing. I like hearing how the sausage is made; warts and all. I want developers I can cheer for. I feel like I can with these. Enough so, I don't mind throwing money at them to help support them. I've bought into the dream. So many times we've been told how a game is amazing, groundbreaking. We've seen so many scams. It becomes almost impossible to believe someone is _actually_ doing something like this. Truely, you have to see for yourself.
The community is awesome. Folks will often throw you money when a bug eats your life savings, or when you dream and drool for a new Prospector to start your mining career. EVERYONE loves loaning out their ships, showing off their beloved babies. There's always someone willing to show you around, offer a hand at something, or, sadly, have disparaging things to say about one's mother. Still, these are folks who also believe in the dream. And, they welcome anyone willing to give their beloved world a try. Me included. I called this game a scam for so long. I actually tried it.

To you, this means that there is a high probability that your assets will not be exactly as they are at the time of purchase. One needs to realize the 600+ M$ Star Citizen has generated go towards the development of 2 games, the Persistent Universe, an open world MMO; and Squadron 42, a single player space adventure game. 600 M& over 12 years is 50M$ per year split into 2 different games. Cyberpunk 2077 took 7 years to make at 483M$, which is 69M$ per year on just 1 single player game that doesn't innovate in every tech aspect of the game. People are really exaggerating a lot. Star Citizen has a relatively small budget for its company size.

Keep in mind that because Stephens was given credits by random people in game, his experience would be better than someone who has a starter ship (he makes the same point in the video). That said, it's pretty easy to rent some ships once you know how to go about it, and you can still experience all of these ships during free fly events or just hopping onto other people's ships. Not to mention if you play PTU builds (which are before the live release), players often have access to the new ships in that patch.

Also, atleast in my opinion, the real fun of the game is interacting with the community. I love working on one of the big ships, as part of an org, being part of a crew. It might not technically be my ship, but it doesn't matter, "your ship" just means you can spawn it in SC. You can use all the features of the ship even if it isn't yours.
Orgs also join up money for these ships super easily, so you'd have the org equipped with a whole fleet in days even when a reset occurs.

Exactly. I own the big ships our small org uses (Hammerhead, Perseus when it comes out, Vanguard, Valkyrie, etc., as well as a Spartan APC since we do a lot of ground combat) so my orgmates don't have to. Another guy has the big medical/explorer and transport ships (C-2 and a Carrack) to carry the APC and tanks. It really is a community game. You can solo it if you really want to, but it's a helluva lot more fun to run around with a bunch of other nutters and see what they get up to :)

At this point, there are a large number of dedicated players who have made a ton of money mining. Since we know there will be a database wipe with the upcoming 3.18 patch, they are happy to toss money around for the same Rason that Luke bought the 890. It's important to understand that everything we do in Star Citizen at the moment is for testing. If you go into the game expecting to grind out success, you will very quickly get frustrated and burn out. The good side of that is that you can try things and take risks, because nothing truly matters in the long term.

This has been a feature in Starbound, No Man's Sky, & Astroneer for years now. I know it's not the same degree of hyperfidelity visually as in Star Citizen with any of these games, but still...It's a feature already present in a variety of open-ended scifi games already available & in a more complete state.
Bonus: each of those games can be played offline & so your placed objects on planets are even _more_ persistent than Star Citizen, where another player may destroy the object (at some point, presumably), server wipe may remove it, or eventual shutdown of the game as a whole may erase it completely.

CIG have been _very_ intentional in motivating group play by how they design ships. The majority of ships come with at least two, if not three positions to fill, with the pilot usually only controlling flight and half of the weapon systems available. Turrets make moderately dangerous ships absolutely lethal in combat and are vital to long treks across space for both bounty-hunters, pirates, and cargo-haulers alike.
It’s really clever how they’ve gone about incentivizing spontaneous collaboration and group gameplay.

I have been a backer for almost 10 years and am also part of the Evocati testing group. I have spent a lot of money backing their and my dream game. What people also have to remember that they are also building 2 games with the 500 million they have made so far. Squadron 42 is a single player campaign that is getting close to being finished. It has some top actors playing roles in the game and will be a top A rated title with beautiful graphics and immersion. The other is the multi player universe. There are still some core technology that is needed for them to complete the game that they have promised and one of the few last hurdles is coming in 3.18 at the end of the year that is already in testing. After that the next milestone is server meshing. This is going to allow hundreds or more players together in one location. This will allow the use of capital ships that will require 20-50 people to operate. No game does this in the fidelity that Star Citizen achieves. There is some feature creep that has kept the game in production for this long but I am okay with it. Originally we were never going to be able to fully fly to a planet and land like we do now. It has opened up fully explorable planets and moons which they are adding more content to with each patch. Looking forward to 4.0 and the first jump to a new system which should be coming next year with server meshing. Keep up the good work CIG!

One thing that really surprised me about Star Citizen is the physics and attention to detail. If you go into hyperspeed, I forget what it's called, and pay attention to the nearest star, as you approach it and pass it, the light shifts from blue to red due to going faster than the speed of light so you're literally watching the blue shift/red shift of light take place. I freaking nerded out on that when I first saw it.

The biggest issue I have with this game is the same as everyone else, they are 100% milking the community for everything they can, you cannot in good conscious say they are not, 500m+ is more than enough for this game, and the prices on shit in the store is insane. It has taken them a decade to get to where they are now and while it's impressive, the time it took is not. The game does have "loading screens" it's happening while you warp just like in ED and a bunch of other space games it's not all that unique, you can do similar stuff in ED and that game has been out for years (although it is not as good I will say, but it's out).
My bigger issue though is that if this game comes out when a lot of people kind of expect, like 2026 or longer (defiantly longer knowing them) this game engine is just not going to cut it anymore imo, you can't expect an engine to last years and years and still be up to par when you release it, by the time this comes out there will be better engines, and I could see them using that as another excuse to push the game back a few more years to make some more money.
Like I tell my friends, don't buy this, why should they be incentivized to actually release this game when they are making far more by just not, all they need to do is show progress, even small progress and people who have spent hundreds or thousands on it will go nuts for it (I spent like $120 but I don't expect to care about this game when it finally does come out tbh).
In review, I love what little they have done with this game, but I fucking hate how greedy they are and how much time they take doing everything they promise. I have no doubt it WILL release and it will be fun, what I don't know is if it will be in the 2020's or 2030's...
