    "If it's a 540i, get back in your car and drive away" 😂 Not once have I regret buying my 540i even though i've done the almighty timing guides, valley pan etc. But definately not a car for someone that can not turn a wrench.

      Kowboy Kel 540i is easy to take care of and much stronger than 530i. You only have to take care of timing chain guides and basic things and it workd great. It’s more expensive to take care of but in my experience more reliable. 530i transmission is under specced and prone to tans failure obviously. 540i has a tank of a transmission.

    Love my 1997 540, 320km and going strong. I do nearly all open road driving (60k in past year) and it just 'feels right'. Had some maintenance issues, LCM, rear bushes and the headlights as per your comments (faded, adjusters). Got a patchy cruise control actuator, works perfectly one day and then decides to have the day off the next. Great videos btw. Thanks

    I drove a E39 528i never a 530i but I did drive a E60 530ix with 255hp the engines never did it for me. The 540i has the instant torque and sounds amazing it pulls hard. The steering feels solid at speed no bump steer which happens with rack and pinion cars. Although I would still prefer the rack n pinion for better road feel and easier service all E39's should of had this. Also I got a 03 540i M Sport over a 530i Sport and the M Sport was a impressive all around car, I thought I would test drive the 530i sport on the lot just to see if I could like it, when I asked the salesman to drive it he said that car has nothing on this you know this is the one you want.

    YES, The 2nd or 3rd owners virtually NEVER Take care of these cars. I shopped for one earlier this year and it took me a month to find one and I found it in CA from a small boutique dealer that respects these cars and bought it at auction and virtually everything you covered he replaced. Car drives like new. I learned a lot and I go to the junkyards to get some cosmetic things today and you can tell how badly people treat them. I found one car that was owned by a doctor (He left papers in the car) in the junkyard that was maintained. The rest that I saw that were 2nd and third owner cars (private sale) I wouldn't pay $300 for them as you couldn't even part them out because everything in the car was trashed.

    Love the direction (+ seeing the growth you & the channel as a whole have made!) That you're going in Nathan! I share many of your opinions, You are also solely responsible for any & all the knowledge I personally have learned Bmw wise. Which I am both grateful & thankful for! It's been a shitty few years for me & this has been a big escape for me! It was an unplanned, unintentional escape that's becoming a lifestyle! I could go on, I'll save e.one my b.s. Just mainly wanted to Thank You! I'm liking the variety & while 90%, of at least what I needed to know, was under the hood or covered in discussions, to see a behind the wheel, moving pov of all that work coming to fruition, as well as touching on the interior! The E-39 interior is another planet to me that I'm almost getting use to! Quite a bit from the drivers seat to learn for first time European car owners! I LOVE how you mentioned the title! It has been (still is but making big progress!) A 3.5 yr. + hold up & an immaculate, well kept, well maintained, former wealthy owner/enthusiast, mainly (except for the dink who bought & sold it to me) who fortunately, didin't put more than a few hundred miles on it with his dealer plates, 1 owner car. 167K. He had & spent the money on preventative & scheduled! + did it right & didin't skimp! Like most everything you cover. Wouldn't mind hearing & seeing you expand on what you feel, If someone was hell bent! On making any of the i-6 M54's (Specifically the 2.5) 300 h.p. or more. I know swaps are limited (30 being plug & play & I'm told? The 38? H.p. difference is semi noticeable. I'm so sick of the forums (NO disrespect to forums or anyone; This is my issue) to buy a 540 or enjoy the E-39 how it is as Bmw essentially maximized power output. Maybe some of your knowledge & experience, coupled with ever changing advances & capabilities in tunning/coding, Could do some videos similar to the one where you discussed headers when you had the block out. I know you had said maybe some dyno stuff. I have to check & see if you had a chance. Something along those lines or ANYTHING? You are aware of,(I know where you stand L.S. swap wise, lol) I have heard? Not aware or seen Ford 5.o swaps? Something semi-financially worth while, If someone wanted rack & pinion, preferably a pre fabbed kit, no welding or cutting, "reasonable" perhaps? Any supercharger kits under $2500 that could be a d.i.y. "tune"? I fully realize that any car needs to be on a dyno with a competent tunner & that's a HUGE part of making power! Add In the Ms-43? I think that's enough of my rant. Ty, I appreciate & respect what you do Nathan! Thank you again! KEEP the content coming!

    There’s a 1997 528i with 90,000 Km that was abandoned for 10 years due to the owner’s death. It has an issue where the speedometer stopped working and the transmission doesn’t shift automatically. It’s on sale at $5,000. The plates are now up to date. That means that the car can be endorsed to my property. How expensive would it be to have it sorted out? What can I expect in corrective repairs down the road? I live in Costa Rica where cars pay 70% import duty so I tend to keep my cars until they fall apart! Thanks for your earnest opinion!

    Thank you for these videos! I´m in the market for a 528i or 525i, yet I live in São Paulo, Brasil (expat). I have seen a few, and none passed basic inspection. None made it to the test drive. The next one I´m about to see is a 1996 528i Manual with 69,500 miles on it. The suspension was completely redone and cooling system completely upgraded. The only thing is he´s asking 7,800 USD for it (using today´s exchange rate which is 5.74 per US dolar). A bit high wouldn´t you say? Yet I know how amazing the manual will be. Any advice?

    • @rbruce63
      @rbruce63 2 года назад

      It’s the same here in Costa Rica where I live! I would try to negotiate down $1,500 as the repairs to have it sorted out could rapidly amount to that budget. How hard it is to import parts from the US for this car? Else you would have to resort to dealer parts that do not depreciate as the car has had depreciated in its service life!

    I'd add poor headlights to this list. In my experience, out of all the e39's I've driven with facelift xenon headlights, have had really low light output. Even the factory new E55 hella projectors have a rough surface to the projector bowl, add that with the slightly "smoked" finish on the lens and you end up with really crap light output

But the oil pressure temp gauge is there and takes a while to get to 1/4 and if u get on it it’ll go to a 1/3 (in talking racing and revving it to 7k rpms). Sound normal? All else is well. What model? What transmission. If you buy the car for 5k how much is left over? How much free time do you have?, Do you have back up transportation? Insurance costs? Running costs? I.e. MPGXmiles driven every monthX fuel costs. Adds up fast when it takes 50 bucks to fill up on Monday and you need more gas on Friday

      The M Sport package is 03 only, you have a sport package with M this and that. If you sit on it, keep it in good repair, and don't add too many miles, it should go up. Right now I'd say it's worth 2.5-5k for a private party sale.

    pre cat O2 sensors deleted?! How did You do that?

    • @joshriver75
      @joshriver75 4 года назад +1

      First stating the obvious that the cats are probably removed.
      Deleting the pre-cat sensors can be done a few different ways. One way is by using spark plug fowlers in between the sensor and exhaust. It fools the computer by maintaining a balanced pressure reading with post cat sensor.
      Doesn't always work but often does.
      Another way is by using proper resistors to short the circuit to fool the computer that o2 sensors are present.
      Can also be done with reprogramming if the skill set and equipment are available to you.
      Regardless..this is potentially a risky endeavor if you're subject to emission inspection. But most likely easy to beat if a visual inspection isn't performed.
      I jumped in to respond as I'm guessing law abiding content creator dont wont to give instructions on how to break the law. I'm not recommending for anyone to do this. I'm merely explaining how other people have done it.
