A few years ago I saw that the Memorial Day concert was being streamed on RUclips and went to watch thinking it would be a Symphonic Band concert. The music was not the type I appreciate the most but the chance to talk to people on the live chat was priceless. At a point I asked if anyone there felt the lottery should come back and I got quite a few people agreeing and no answer to the contrary. Most of the people there were family or friends of either veterans, servicepeople or of people who lost their lives because of their military career.
While I was doing high school in the US for a semester, I had two classmates who were very good students and planned to join the military because that was the only way they could get good higher education. For those who don't know, the lottery was the system that, randomly, chose the draftees. I believe it ended after vietnam. Economist John Kenneth Galbraith (neo-Keynesian) on his book "How To Control The Military" argues the end of the lottery created a distortion on the cost/social position of US military actions. What exists in the US today is a very powerful Military-Industrial Complex, that together with powerful - usually neo-conservative - civilians from the foreign policy community, who make their living (profits for shareholders and comfortable financial conditions for civilians) from military actions. There's, therefore, an economic and social incentive to decide (even unconsciously in the case of some civilians) to go to war.
How can the US go to war all the time and have no public demonstrations on the streets like it happened late in the Vietnam conflict? Find a way to get on voluntaries and get them from families who don't have the means nor time to complain. The question now is: does this structure or system lives of off the expanding poverty in the US?

I remember well the anxiety I felt when George W was elected president and how that anxiety escalated when he picked Chaney as VP. All my fears were immediately turned into reality on 9/11. I experienced total helplessness when the Congress forgot it's oath to the Constitution. What followed was 8 yrs! Of misery and depression.Yes,it ruined my life and I can never forgive any of these people and the Republican party. I can do now is spit on the floor and curse !

I think the deepest flaw in US foreign policy is how they conduct "diplomacy" by military force.
Who even does that?... No other country does that!
Diplomacy is about mutual respect, but the US doesn't respect anyone, not even its "allies".

Lol. 2008 Wilkerson is a lot more subdued than 2021 Wilkerson. Those 13 years really opened his eyes to how evil the system is. Now he'll openly call his ex-colleagues liars and warmongers.

Excellent stuff.... glad to see a rational, level headed man. I admire Colonel Wilkerson.... he got treated a bit roughly over here in the UK by a BBC political "ponse" on the Hard Talk program.... but he stuck to his guns and made his point well.

SMH I do not understand why we subject ourselves to the talking-point-interviews of LIARS and TRUTH-BENDERS in Congress, Faux News, and the Presidency, when there are smart people like Col. Wilkerson here and ready to help serve justice to good politics and informed decision making.
I can't thank you enough for your service Sir, and I mean that.

Well my take on Rumsfeld was that he was a neocon. I remember him waxing lyrical about "Milton Friedman' and how he felt smarter just talking to him. To my mind Friedman was the high priest of the neoconservative movement. However I don't live in the USA so I have watched this from a great distance.
