I remember the "duck and cover" exercises, too. My dad was in the USAF from 1950-1971 and toward the end of his career we lived near a major air base, one that the Soviets would have certainly launched a warhead or two at in the event of war. It was years before it occurred to me that the purpose of "D&C" was a (lame) attempt to let us children "hide" from the incoming blast waves (heat, EMP, etc) of an atomic explosion. The school was close enough to the base that it was basically "ground zero." There's no way in hell any of us would have survived a 20-50 megaton nuke going off that close by.

I can remember trying to figure out duck-and-cover exercises in the 50s and the Korean war. I was in the second grade when I figured out that the US was a warmongering state. I remember the "duck and cover" exercises, too. My dad was in the USAF from 1950-1971 and toward the end of his career we lived near a major air base, one that the Soviets would have certainly launched a warhead or two at in the event of war. It was years before it occurred to me that the purpose of "D&C" was a (lame) attempt to let us children "hide" from the incoming blast waves (heat, EMP, etc) of an atomic explosion. The school was close enough to the base that it was basically "ground zero." There's no way in hell any of us would have survived a 20-50 megaton nuke going off that close by.

Radioactivity is detectable there until now but no evacuation or extensive cleaning took place while a report warning of the dangers was suppressed by the UK government for teh sake of the 'special relationship". Later flight shows ere organzied on the (contaminated) airfield for the public. At the same time in the nearby school children developed cancer at an unprecedented rate. But who cared ?
