I am currently applying to grad school, and I completely understand the emotions you experienced and discussed. It is so overwhelming and stressful, and worrying about not getting in to a “good” grad program because everyone is questioning why you want a degree in English anyway doesn’t help. I usually say feed 2 birds with one piece of bread. I’ve always thought that saying was very violent since I was a child. Those poor birds in the original saying :(

ok so I thought the exact same thing literally two days ago re: the "kill two birds with one stone" phrase. What I came up with to say instead is "attract two cats with one can of tuna"--I feel like that is much nicer
