Thanks Kevin! Interesting points on the Streamer X- I've started using mine a lot more recently because it finally seemed to be getting stable, whereas it was pretty rough for a while at the beginning and I hardly ever used it. Tough to beat a Cam Link for simplicity though .

Love the new set-up! It's always fun to tune in see what you have been up to and nerd out from afar (on audio production stuff in particular). For desktop speakers that sound very good and don't take up much room on the desktop, try the Bose Companion 2 Series III Multimedia Speaker System. I've been very happy with mine for about a year. Is your bass amp back there solid state? I'm a long-term confirmed tube guy although I don't currently have an bass gear. Really used to like my Rickenbacker and Hofner through a Traynor YB-300A through an old 2x15 Fender Bassman cabinet. Plenty loud enough for the bars my now defunct mid-life crisis band (too much band crisis and drama after four years) used to play plus the occasional outdoor event. Kind Regards,
Thanks for the recommendation on the Bose speakers! I'll have to take a look at them. And yeah, the amp is solid state, but I've really been using my Line6 pedal more than anything for the past year or so. It's so nice! Probably not nearly as much fun as your rig though. 😁
Great walkthrough Tom! I'm still re-doing my room but the desk setup is finished. I'm still housing too much on the upper area while you've mounted a lots of stuff beneath the desk - that's neat, will explore my options for that.

Thanks Tom. This is super helpful. Especially for the power supplies and high-speed cables folks need to think about. Can you tell me what Pantone blue color paint is on your wall or better yet the name of the color and brand? I went to Home Depot, and nothing came close. Thanks for all your insight and help
It’s Behr “Living Stream” from Home Depot, but I originally got it in 2015 so I don’t know if it’s still around. Email me tom@himynameistom.com and I can send you a photo of the label with their color code on it. 👍
Tom, great video as always. Do you have a wiring diagram that you can share of how you connect Cameras and Mics to the three Rodeo devices - RODECaster Duo, RODECaster Video and Streamer X. Cheers.
Don't sell yourself short.... I take on cord management from kind of a "Dada point of view. That spaghetti under your desk is beautiful, and don't let anyone tell you otherwise!
Great video Tom, your setup is awesome. Can you do a audio guide on the software portion? Like what do you do to your audio once you load it on your editing software. I use similar hardware as you for audio and your audio sounds way better than mine.
That's definitely something I could put together! I don't really do too much though, to be honest. The Rodecaster presets are usually enough when I'm using those devices, otherwise a little bit of compression in Final Cut and thats about it! But it could be worth making a video on for sure 👍
It's been on my feedback list, so hopefully at some point! I don't know how that stuff works, but that seems like hopefully a simple enough feature to add.
Do you have any tests of the Camlink4k and StreamerX comparison? I use a Panasonic G7 with the Camlink4k. It is buttery smooth at 1080p/60 on ECamm but has a minor frame loss when I bump to 4k/30. Wondering if the StreamerX would do better with the 4k signal? I also use a Mac Mini M1.
I don't have a direct comparison, but in my experience they're very similar. I sometimes get a bit of choppiness at 24fps on both, but 30fps is usually great (and Streamer X has gotten a lot more reliable too with recent updates).
2:15 - IK iLOUD MICRO MONITORS looks like product for you - great, flat sound for audio-editing but they are small and also you can connect with them via bluetooth
Hi, Tom I always enjoy your videos. One question. What lens are you using to shoot this video. Been thinking to get one for my Sony A6100 I have small space. But your image looks good. Any suggestions. Thank you
Do you leave the cameras switched into the on position so when you hit the button for the wall brick they just automatically turn on? I’ve been scared to do that in my studio because I’m not sure how the cameras will handle it. I’m using an A7iv, a7c, fx30, and a6600.
I turn the actual cameras themselves off. But if you use a dummy battery setup instead of USB, then you could leave them switched on and control everything from the remote since the cameras wouldn't have to have their batteries installed and then would only be on when there's direct power. Now that I type that it seems like a smarter way to go...
Yeah, that's my one gripe with it. I tried adding a tripod extension tube, but for some reason they used a slightly modified screw on their clamp that only seems to work with the standard base. If it were just a regular 3/8 or 1/4 20 it could work with anything!
You mentioned that the Sony ZV-1F (where do they come up with these names?!) is a great overhead camera. What is it about this camera that you like so much for overhead use?
I like that it has a super low profile lens, so even though it doesn't have the same versatility as a zoom lens would, it's easier to keep out of the frame and turns on/off instantly. It's just a nifty little camera all around! But yeah, the names are insane.
Also, how do you stop the ambient light reflections coming from your framed artwork on your walls when you film from showing up in your videos? Is it all about the proper angles maybe?
This is a good question! Some of it is just light positioning, but I actually took the glass off of a lot of the frames that were the most reflective so that way they're just totally matte.
1. Very cool. 2. I'm confused; what do you use the 'front facing' workspace for then? When I read the title, I thought that you were referring to the front facing workstation/desk.
I do have a separate desk that I use for different videos, but it changes each time depending on the subject. I did a "studio tour" where I talked about this a bit more: ruclips.net/video/W-I2twhalgI/видео.html Basically what helped the most was separating a "work" desk from a "filming" desk. Trying to do both at once was just a bit too tough. And even though I use this desk for filming and streaming and stuff, knowing it doesn't have to be the main setup reduces a lot of friction.
Im actually trying to find a way to make my set up wireless to use a wireless xlr system to use on my gaming set up. I have an eletric standing desk and the lack of cable management is bothering me and I want to fix it. I Also dont like seeing my cables bunched up together in a basket or something
Oh definitely! My filming table has a manual sit/stand crank which is nice, but it'd be cool to have a work desk that can change. I just really like my old workbench table though, so I'm happy to stick with it.
I’m noticing the ATEM is not featured anymore, and I need a switcher, but the rode is overkill for me. I need ISO, but want to keep the cords minimal. Any word if Ulanzi is going to add ISO recs to their DD02? Have you used it?
I actually have one on the way! But truthfully I don’t know how much I’d trust them to add advanced features like that, so the ATEM Mini Pro ISO is probably still the way to go. Or depending on the cameras you’re using and how they’re connected, Ecamm might work too.
Dope video bruh. I have a question.... I'm using the duo and mke600 and it has a loud hiss. I thought it was the rodecaster duo so I got it replaced and the hiss is still there. Anything I can try it do to stop it?
Hmm, is this hiss on your recordings or only in your headphones? If it's not showing up on recordings, then that narrows it down to either the headphone amps or the headphones themselves. Since you had the Duo replaced, it's probably not a defect, which means the headphone settings might need to be changed to either low or high sensitivity (depending on what you're suing). If the hiss IS showing up on recordings, then it could be the gain level, an EQ setting, or a bad XLR cable. If you turn off EQ and turn the gain down, you might be able to rule those out. And if you swap cables that could help too. It's amazing how much of a difference there can be between different XLR cables.
Are you running your cameras without batteries in them? I like the idea of the cameras being controlled with smart plugs, but I don’t want them running all the time…
I'm using USB, which requires the batteries, but if you use a dummy battery setup, then you could leave the power on and the remote switch would turn them on/off
Ngl i really don't like ai voice overs. Maybe cause I have listened to a couple of audiobooks last year using ai and the ai sounds so robotic and the tone and pitch they speak in hurts my ears quite alot. There has been some improvements but I think ai voiceovers has a long way to go
I don't know that I'd want to listen to a whole book...that might be a bit much. But jeez, there are times I really wish they would've been an option in the past when working with clients or on deadlines when someone cancels at the last minute 😱

I wish that overhead Ulanzi stand went taller, it's nowhere near tall enough to get over my display
Yeah, that's my one gripe with it. I tried adding a tripod extension tube, but for some reason they used a slightly modified screw on their clamp that only seems to work with the standard base. If it were just a regular 3/8 or 1/4 20 it could work with anything!
Tom (Tim?) Buck: Come for the puns, stay for the info 😉
After watching Tom's setup update videos, my wife usually would notice the few hundred dollars short in our shared cash account.
Awesome video by the way! Maybe you mentioned it and I missed it in the video, but about how big is the room?
Also, how do you stop the ambient light reflections coming from your framed artwork on your walls when you film from showing up in your videos? Is it all about the proper angles maybe?
It's about 12' x 12' (4 meters x 4 meters)
This is a good question! Some of it is just light positioning, but I actually took the glass off of a lot of the frames that were the most reflective so that way they're just totally matte.
5:40 Your sponsorship ad was literally interrupted by a RUclips ad. 😆 I wonder if you or RUclips decided to ADD it there. 😆
Haha, that can’t be coincidence right?
I will forever enjoy the puns
1. Very cool.
2. I'm confused; what do you use the 'front facing' workspace for then? When I read the title, I thought that you were referring to the front facing workstation/desk.
I do have a separate desk that I use for different videos, but it changes each time depending on the subject. I did a "studio tour" where I talked about this a bit more: ruclips.net/video/W-I2twhalgI/видео.html
Basically what helped the most was separating a "work" desk from a "filming" desk. Trying to do both at once was just a bit too tough. And even though I use this desk for filming and streaming and stuff, knowing it doesn't have to be the main setup reduces a lot of friction.
You had me until the cable management. I almost had an anxiety attack when you went under the desk...somethings just don't need to be shared.
No movie magic here 😅
there is a usb mic you might be interested in which is the PreSonus Revelator Dynamic USB Microphone, looks cool and it might be an interesting video!
Im actually trying to find a way to make my set up wireless to use a wireless xlr system to use on my gaming set up. I have an eletric standing desk and the lack of cable management is bothering me and I want to fix it. I Also dont like seeing my cables bunched up together in a basket or something
Ooh wireless sounds like it'd be fun! I always get worried about keeping track of batteries and stuff, but I'm sure there's a way to manage it all.
would love to see you thoughts on logi mevo core
@1:01 “I can imagine what will be, unburdened by what has been.” - Kamala Harris; in every speech or interview ever. 😅
Would you ever consider a sit/stand desk arrangement?
Or depending on the cameras you’re using and how they’re connected, Ecamm might work too.
m4 mac mini is calling your name
I don't NEED it but I want it 😁
Bud these colors look like a Mcdonals playpen. With greyhairs we need the neutral cololors
Nope.
How do you use the elgato pedal, Tom?
@@tombuck could be the headphones cause its a lot of static. i'm using the rode xlr cables that came with the NT1 5th gen.
Ha, I thought that was the wife giving you some playful banter at first. Brilliant.
Haha, if I do another one she'll have to be included to "talk" with my friends 😅
How is the RODECaster connected to the arm
W tom buck
Is this the desk tour to end all desk tours? Probably
-everybody
That would be tour-ific!
can the rodecaster video export 4k to a capture device?
No, it's limited to 1080 for everything
0:22 That cable problem. 😑
At least I have some Velcros to get them organized, Haha.
I always start that way, but then it ends up like this. Hopefully I’ve broken the cycle now! 😅
@@tombuckAs you wish, 😁
Maybe I can get things tidy up again after my re work of my studio desk recording room.
The ad was engaging and the sponsor relevant. 👍
Thanks Josh! I try to be selective when it comes to that stuff, so I appreciate it
Still holding the SM7B. Dude...
It's just for you my friend! 😬
😮
Are you running your cameras without batteries in them? I like the idea of the cameras being controlled with smart plugs, but I don’t want them running all the time…
I'm using USB, which requires the batteries, but if you use a dummy battery setup, then you could leave the power on and the remote switch would turn them on/off
@@tombuck thanks. I heard those aren’t safe..
I’ve had good luck with them, but they can be pricey sometimes and USB can also be used with other things, so I’ve just preferred to go that route.
Oh dear. Comment removed (no doubt by the powers that be). I did say "Excellent video again.
Well thank you for saying it twice. 😬
@@tombuck Just you tube driving it's customers away.
Do you still Play hockey?
Oh yeah! Our new winter season just started this week 🥅
@@tombuck I can see situations where it would be useful but it has a long way to go
