Thank you for sharing this. I always get confused. Is the chalky side always out and the markings will appear or should appear on the right side of fabric 🤔🤔
The chalky side of transfer paper goes against the side of the fabric you want to mark. I’ve read that the marks are supposed to go on the inside. But when I’m actually sewing I’ve found that it depends on the pattern-sometimes you need the mark on the right side to see where to attach things.
Having just worn that dress yesterday, I’m not sure how comfortable it would be to wear without the pleat. The ease in the pattern needs the pleat to fit in the back over your shoulders and to allow room for sitting down.
Hi Toni. I have a question related to notches. In the section at 7:42 you mentioned counts for the side seams, front and back and for a center-back. Do the counts refer to the number of notches for a dress or is this a general count for patterns? Do you happen to have a video that explains or shows that a little more? I would really appreciate any other pointers in that regard. Thanks!
I can make a video about that. Thank you for the suggestion! Until then, the notches are standard for big 4 patterns regardless of what you are making. I would assume it would be the same for indie patterns but I haven’t seen with enough of them to be 100% on that. On the arm hole and sleeves there is always one notch on the front and two on the back. The notches correspond to putting the pattern together. If there is a center back seam, it’s always three notches. And if there is a center front seam, there will be two notches. Side seams are one notch.
Hi Martha! I have a video tutorial for a tied headband, which is easy to sew. If you are ready to use a pattern I have a whole playlist to sew a wrap skirt using Simplicity 8133 which is a “learn to sew”pattern for beginners. Let me know if you have any more questions!
That’s how I cut fabric. I prefer marking the wrong sides by sliding the tracing paper in between to marks darts etc. that way the marks don’t smudge. And when I lie out my pattern pieces on my fabric I can make sure the fabric pattern looks good with the pattern placement and make adjustments accordingly.
@@dianecrews6130 some people like to cut it out right sides together and then you can go straight from cutting to sewing, but I find it harder to make the pattern that way. It comes down to personal preference.
Thought when cutting the pattern pieces should be on wrong side of fabric, therefore the markings should be on wrong side but I think I’m seeing you have your fabric folded that the pattern pieces are on the right side…bit confused
I usually slide the transfer paper between the pieces so both sides get marked at the same time. I mark on which ever side will be easier to see while I sew. It depends on the pattern.
@@Sally-ih6ls I was told to always mark on the wrong side but it really just depends. For example if you are attaching patch pockets on the front of a dress, you have to mark the right side to line everything up. But darts are always marked on the wrong side, since that’s how you match them up to sew. If you have any more questions, just let me know 😉
Thanks Toni, this is a great tutorial.
You’re very welcome Monique! Thanks for watching ☺️
This is a great way of marking fabric for sewing pattern icons! Never would have thought of this. ❤
Glad to know you found it helpful!

@@SewSewLounge oh ok....that makes sense..... I'll just keep that in mind. Thank you so much
Well, that makes sense
I like this dress but want toremove the back pleat from the pattern for a flat back, can it be done?

I haven't sewn any clothes. What would you recommend for a first pattern besides an apron, which I have made.

It must have missed something but I am curious as to why your fabric is wrong sides together to be cut out
